The men were brighter until they surprised the entire world by reuniting for a tour in 2000, three decades after they broke up. David Crosby Stephen Stills Graham Nash and Neil Young are

At this moment you know what you have to do to act. Young left the group just before the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Stephen asked David Crosby of The Birds to replace him. Neil had split up and Stephen, you know, they knew me and I liked them. to each other and uh he said well do you want to eat like me we have to do this concert it's going to be great it's going to be great you have to do this I said yes Crosby was also performing at the festival with the birds who were at the height of their success , Crosby was having problems with his bandmates Chris Hillman and Roger McGinn, problems that were magnified when he performed with Buffalo Springfield.

I remember it was a very bitter experience, he was sad on stage, there was camaraderie between us. What I had had as a band was no longer there was David Crosby's desire to be in what became Crosby Stills and Nash that really brought the situation to an end there was some friction there and also I just never been there anymore you know the easiest person in the world I'm very stubborn very independent guys they said you know we'd rather do it without you I said well you're making a terrible mistake you know they said well we think we'll do better without you, when Buffalo Springfield broke up forever, Crosby and Stills decided to team up, we found ourselves spending a lot of time together and driving around and, you know, singing songs and basically Claws and I were hanging out and we went and saw Graham sing. with the hollys and then cass comes over and whispers to me do you think they need to harmonize?

Mamas and Pop singer Cass Elliot has introduced David and Steven to English pop star Graham Nash Graham had been a member of the Hollys since the early '60s, but by 1968 he was beginning to feel the limitations that the group I was putting it on when I made the decision to leave Holly. Three things had happened: one, I was getting frustrated because I was writing songs that I thought were great and they didn't want to record, second, they wanted to make a whole album of Bob Dylan songs in some kind of section swing band. Las Vegas trumpets and the third thing is that I had actually made friends with a teddy bear named David.

cass elliott said get in the car i want you to meet someone she rated my room and told me to drug it on her chest there was a lid from a shoe box and on the lid was a bunch of dough she had this sweater pot what does it mean if you smoked a little and went somewhere, you stopped and tried to remember where you were going, it was either sting or weed, so we laughed all afternoon and I really liked it in the summer of 1968.
Crosby Stills and Nash sang. together for the first time in a house in Laurel Canyon belonging to Cass Elliott or Joni Mitchell, no one is absolutely sure now, this is possibly because we might have smoked one, but none of us are absolutely sure if it was Jones or Cats like I. Say it was Jones. St. Davis was wrong. It was at Cass's house where we sang together in the morning. When he arrives, we had. You know, I had a pretty good harmony too and we sang it to Graham. Anyway, do that again. Could you do it in the morning? the third time he put on the top and steve and i looked at each other anyway before

could make their group official graham had to return to england to leave the hollies david and steven joined him in london we arrived to Britain to rehearse, you know, and there were fans who would see us in a car and shout things at us because we were blowing up more of their groups, all those horrible Americans, they didn't know it was such a big deal, oh, just a the band , the trio rehearsed their songs and began seeking interest from the label.
We tried at one point to get into Apple Records. It was an up-and-coming new record label, obviously controlled by the Beatles and Peter Asher at the time we actually auditioned for George and Peter. and we sang it really well and they approved of it, which I think, in retrospect, they probably weren't happy with Amit Erdogan from Atlantic Records. He had loved Buffalo Springfield and offered the new group a contract. Crosby Stills and Nash settled in Los Angeles to record their first album. We knew we were doing something really unusual, we knew the songs were really good and we were totally excited and it was the year of the guitarist.
You have to understand that this was a year where Clapton, Hendrix, Jimmy Page and people like that, is that you? You know, and uh, for us to come out of left field with this, you know, three-part harmony and a lot of acoustic stuff, you know, it's quite unexpected, it was great, I almost cut my hair, the music was wonderful, but the dynamic between all three was strong. The personalities were explosive and you were gone two days in a row, yes, hypocrite, I have my own weirdness and craziness, but it's not as volatile as David and Steven, so we adapted to that role, you know, David and Stephen, to Over the years, I have loved them. each other to death we don't agree on a lot of things, but we're brothers, I love him, he loves me, you know, and brothers fight In May 1969, the band released their debut, Sweet Judy Blue Eyes and Marrakesh Express, were radio hits on the radio. full album crosby stills and

's music became the sound of the counterculture within a few months david stephen and graham would become more famous than ever with their previous bands they had never played live when an offer came in to appear at a music festival summer in upstate New York Crosby Stills and Nash said yes, their performance at Woodstock would change everything in the summer of 1969 Crosby Stills and Nash released their first album to immense critical and commercial acclaim, then came the time for the group to tour. had overdubbed the lead guitar keyboards and bass on the album they would need other musicians to perform the songs on stage.
It was Atlantic Records president Ahmed Erdogan who suggested that Steven's former bandmate Neil Young would be the perfect addition. I've been looking for a keyboard player. I wanted to play with another musician, but one day I talked to Ahmed about it and Arnold says, Why don't you call Neal? Didn't we just go through this? Stephen decided that Ahmed was right. David and Graham weren't so sure. We had an interview with Neil in Greenwich Village on Bleecker Street and I went to breakfast with Neil because I was the one who was mainly against it because I didn't see what we needed from Neil, you know, the combination that we had with our voices was pretty good. and our musicianship was pretty good and when I finished having breakfast with Neil I would have given him the world.
He was incredibly brilliant and of course I loved his songs, how could you not invite him? You know, listen to the songs, good sir, I would ask him to join the group if he had 25 people. Neil had begun to establish himself as a solo artist, but the opportunity to team up with his former Buffalo Springfield bandmate was too tempting. To resist I thought it would be great to play with Steven again and the other guys were great singers and had their own songs and everything, but I really felt like I had some unfinished things with Stephen and we played together and you know what we needed.
To do more of that, the band officially changed their name to Crosby Stills Nash and Young and went on to play their first concert in Chicago a week later. They had their second show at Woodstock, Looking at the world through the sunset in your eyes. Traveling. on the train A bolt from the blue, ducks, pigs and chickens, this concert had come up and it was a shaky affair, no one was sure what was going to happen, we just knew that some of our favorite bands were going to play there, the great nervousness what everyone felt. You know, he makes the point that, you know, when Steven doesn't know, he just says hi, the point was that all the people we really cared about were standing right behind us and they'd all heard the record, but we'd never played it live. . before and then they said, well, let's see, can I do it?
I'm sorry, but when the camera was set to film the band's historic performance, Neil Young refused to be filmed. The cameras all over the place offended me because it was a distraction to what we were doing was playing the music, so I told him not to do that with me, not to film me, don't bother, you know, don't come near me and you know , Stay Away After Woodstock, the band's reputation grew. with every show they didn't respect they performed in the sanctuary the dressing room watch them a month after their first concert crosby stills nash and young were superstars their performance in the new york movie maurice created such chaos that the crowd refused to leave the venue promoting the concert bill graham He started putting money under the dressing room doors until the band returned to the stage.
Yes, in September the group went to San Francisco to record an album, but the mood had changed. Twenty-four years ago, the song of a woman and a man came into this life. who lived in conflict i was tired david suffered a big loss when his girlfriend christine hindon died in a car accident when i did deja vu i was very sad my girlfriend had just died and most of the time i would go into the studio and just sit on the floor and cry , we weren't very together, I'm surprised we did such a good job, the band managed to finish their album, but it was a difficult time to start the longest tour any of them have ever been on. ever been on was released in march 1970 at the same time the beatles broke up csny were rock's new superstars their singles woodstock our house and the teachers children were everywhere on the radio it was a symbol of peace and love except among them well, you know there was Once in Denver we had some problems with rehearsals or something and they had booked the tour again, which never worked out for us because the first day we were rehearsing when the new bass player we met the guy and we started playing. with him it was great, so there was a big fight and then we used to fight a lot, like on a hockey team, you know, the puck is playing in the neil, it says this great metaphor, but playing hockey, the team really clicks and everything, and then all of a sudden the gloves go up and everyone's fighting and then they pick them up again and they go back to playing hockey.
It's kind of like in May 1970 the band recorded what would become their most profound political statement. Reaction to the shooting of four Kent State college students at an anti-war demonstration. I was in this house in a canyon on the coast of California. Crosby came up and he had the magazine about the Kent State murders and I heard it was on the news, but Crosby always has a way of approaching things, that's what woke me up and I knew something was going on there and I had some ideas about he started writing a song and when I finished it I called Nash, I think, and he said, get the studio, get any studio, get it now we're on our way and we cut it and out came ohio ratified csny's position as the voice of the counterculture leaves vu was selling millions his concerts were rallies rock shows political events but neil was preparing to restart his solo career with his new album after the gold rush in july the csny tour was over and so was the band, they were living

They had been together for a year in the late 1970s, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young had become the biggest band in America, then at the peak of their fame they left, we got together at one point and had a great effect on many people, including us, and then, but we always planned from the beginning to go out in thedifferent directions and do different things and it was just a loose organization when the live album four-way street was released crosby stills nash and young were all making solo records when we started we used our own names because we intended to continue with solo careers all of us and every time we did it they were like oh they broke up we were never together I thought it was cool to give each other some air and that's why we used all of our last names if there was any plan it was the only one after csny the four of them had done solo hours all while stills and young fronted their own bands crosby and nash started making music together as a duo david and i knew we had a musical bond and we always have and always will, there's probably no one currently who thinks of harmony in the same way that Nash and I do or can.
It was easy to make music with David because we think alike. It was a pleasure. We had great songs starting with the first Gram album. Nash David Crosby. Young music as a soloist propelled him to the top of the world. Charts Over time his association with Crosby Stills and Nash began to feel like a brief side trip in what was always essentially a solo career Everyone I play with Everyone knows I'm moving on and that I might not stay forever and I might come back and you know, as long as everyone knows from the beginning that it's great to see everyone and that change is good for the music, so real musicians understand that they don't care if you play with them this year or not.
The only one of us who has gone out on our own and been very successful is Neil and he did it brilliantly in 1973. Neal was on tour when he called David and Graham to join him. After the tour, the trio contacted Steven and they all broke up. In Hawaii they started recording new songs, even going so far as to take a cover photo of the album, but the meeting didn't happen when people planned things for us to do thinking that, oh, what a great opportunity, sometimes it didn't work out, you know? It's not that we weren't looking at life that way at the time.
The relationship between Crosby Stills, Nash and Neil is much like a frozen pond. Ice receives certain things and if you wait long enough it will support your weight. but if you put too much importance on it, you will go through the four musicians they scrapped the album but agreed to do the tour the demand for tickets was enormous for the first time in history a rock group would once again do a complete tour of football stadiums the tour was a great success when it ended the group met in los angeles to make an album shortly after recording began neal disappeared we started it we cut two songs neil said he would show up the next day i never saw him again everyone has to feel it at the same time, to to really be what it is, I mean, I think it's great that people have wanted csny to be together over the years and I think that's a testament to what it was worth when we got together, but you have to want do it after those sessions fell apart the band members went their separate ways they move fast plus you want to have a place to go prejudices are clever when it's a pun a year later Stephen was on tour with his own band when Neal showed up next of years as part of buffalo springfield and csny stephen and neal started recording as stills and young, we make a lot of space for each other and we listen to each other and there are little spheres of influences, you know, and neil and I have a way of saying things in three sentences that could take him and David all day to get to Steven and Neil have a special chemistry in the same way as nationality, Steven always wanted to work with Neil, I think he always will and I think that goes for both of them. senses later. recording some songs and young invited crosby and nash to miami to join the sessions once again there was talk of a csny album and the tour began, but david and graham had signed a contract with abc records and had to finish an album for They first left Miami to finish Crosby Nash's album Wind on the Water and in their absence Neil and Steven deleted their voices from the recorded tracks David and Graham were hurt and angry Neil and Steven were released Long May You Run from the band Stills young and they went out to the On the road we've been through some things together, it was a great album and then the tour progressed quite well and we were moving very fast, although there was no time to rehearse anything new, so the set never changed after a few weeks. the tour that left Stephen a telegram saying funny how some things that start spontaneously end up that way eat a peach get on your knees true sense of humor certainly wasn't, I certainly knew him too well to let him hurt my pieces like that with a little of verbal jousting, I left the tour in the middle of the tour and, uh, there was something inherently, something was wrong, something was wrong with the whole thing and, uh, and it wasn't working, the balance was off somehow, so You know, I abandoned it.
Neil got frustrated and then he got sick and said well, that's it, I'm leaving, you know, and he's got more courage than me, I can't, I can't just go out like that, Stephen was shaking, no. Only Neal left him holding the bag with the rest of Still's young dates, but he had done what seemed like irreparable damage to his relationship with David and Graham. steven appeared at a crosby nash concert and managed to patch things up with david and graham crosby stills and nash decided to pick up where they left off after their first album in 1969 as a tour in 1976 they made csn she's seen the changes it was a big hit neil young was a soloist again crosby stills and nash We were a group again, it was a pretty good time.
I remember recording the CSN album at Criterios Studios in Miami. We had, we rented this villa, we had great songs, we were having a great time. Just One Song Before I Left was CSN's biggest hit. Once the band was back on top and excited to be there, but David's drug use was increasing to dangerous levels. He was just switching from a bad habit of snorting cocaine to doing cocaine without alcohol, which is even worse, and he was in a really good place with my music. crossfit sales nash was making the csn album but in the late '70s graham had had enough crosby nash recording session the band started a gem david was a free base to smoke and his pipe was in an amp and the jam session was so vibrant and so hot that the amp shook and slowly shook the tube towards the edge of the amp, then the tube fell and shattered on the floor and David stopped the music.
Drugs had become more important to me than music, something I swore would never happen. in my life and at that moment I knew that David was in big trouble and that if David was in big trouble we were all in big trouble when he stopped that traffic jam, a door closed in my mind, that was the moment when I told David. that he couldn't make music with him anymore graham nash was david crosby's most loyal friend and supporter if david was so far away that even graham gave up on him it seemed like everyone seemed like crosby stills and nash were gone forever in 1981 crosby stills and nash split up again this time due to david crosby's drug addiction, steven stills and graham nash decided to record a duet album, basically, david was completely out of it, stephen and i had a lot of music to make, so we decided we were going to make music.
Without David Graham and I we were totally going to make a Stills Nash record, it's the only combination we haven't done, I can't blame him man, that was near the end of my drug-taking days and I was just as dysfunctional. how could a human being be and not be dead, we turned it over to Atlantic Records and they said no we want a CSN record, he said there is no Crosby, he left, he said well we don't want the record, so now there are six hundred of us. a thousand dollars on a record with our own money and I talked to Stephen, told him what we should do and then we had to make room for Dave, you know, and he changed some things that I really wish he hadn't done and then there were some other things that there were great additions.
He came out much better than he should have. Crosby was in bad shape but with the help of his friend he managed to get through the sessions. The finished album included a song by Graham that documented how he felt about the entire process. saga of crosby stills nash and young wasted on the road um, i wrote as a reaction to the amount of time me, david, steven, me, david, steven and neal have wasted over the years, we've made a lot of good music. I don't deny it, but we have wasted a lot of time, we have lost a lot of love and we have wasted a lot of life.
The fact that he turned it into a hit record is almost silly considering what it's really about. Between 1982 and 1985, David was arrested five times on various drug and weapons charges, but his habit persisted. The trio toured intermittently whenever David was well enough. I always tried to be there 100% and I didn't always succeed, but I think the compensation factor of Stephen and I wanting to be stronger and better because our partner was suffering was equal to everything for me in 1985. Crosby Stills and Nash They had a bittersweet reunion with Neil Young at Live Aid In The Ground.
There are many times that I would rather not remember that that was not the worst moment, there were other moments that were much worse, but you know, there were many moments where I did not do anywhere near what I am capable of doing. The young man tried to help Crosby as others said he was of no use, he came to my house in Mill Valley and said, listen, man, I know you're a little afraid to go to the hospital. I should go to my house you can kick all this stuff in there and he took the time out to try to help save my life you know we all care a lot about each other Neal offered to make another Csny album if David could clean up.
Instead, David ran from the police and ended up on his boat in Florida when he was on the boat thinking about escaping and therefore never returning to American society and being a fugitive at large a federal fugitive who was running out of food. and with no money the decision he made to get off his boat to the nearest FBI office was the point at which David recognized that he desperately needed help in December 1985. David turned himself in and was extradited to a Texas prison. I prayed for him as much as I did. He got over it and then, as he faced the inevitable, he got over it.
I don't want to be the poster boy for recovery that I'm on. I'm one of the lucky few who was given the opportunity to escape this and they did, and it took me a year in prison and a lot of it. of meetings and a lot of help from my friends in 1986 david left prison clean and sober neo kept his word in the quartet regrouping to record american dream as a gesture of friendship was wonderful but musically it was not the triumphant reunion that fans had waited 16 years for hearing that it was part of a deal that we would meet if David got his act together.
I don't remember any of that and I really prefer not to discuss it. We don't really hang out. We were just in the same thing. area didn't work out for more reasons than I can find a valiant effort didn't work out csny didn't tour in support of american dream young went back to his solo career and crosby stills and nash went back on the road and then in 1994 david was I dealt another terrible blow I was very sick and I didn't know I was dying and I didn't know that my liver was probably half dead we had no idea why I kept wanting to lie down and rest Crosby finally went to the hospital and was told that his liver was failing and that he was probably going to die that he would need all the luck in the world just to survive for crosby stills nash and young to make music again it would take a miracle in 1994 crosby stills and nash's future was donated because david crosby's health was in serious condition deterioration and I went to UCLA, they sat me down and said, David, what's the problem is that you have hepatitis C and your liver is almost destroyed and you're going to die unless you get a transplant.
Pretty soon and he put me on the list and we started waiting. David's friend accompanied him during his ordeal with Graham Nash watching over his bed. The head of medicine at UCLA called me one day and told me that we had found a liver for David. I want let's get it ready do you want to come I wish him the best and I go to the door and I turn around and I say now look don't leave me with frames and he started laughing and I burst out he laughed, Crosby's will to live prevailed again , managed to overcome the operation, got a new liver and regained his health.
The disconcerting part is not my downward ascent. The disconcerting part is the incredible good luck that has happened and continues to happen in my life. I'm an incredibly lucky man when David was well enough. Crosby Stills and Nash returned to the road in 1997. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then were dropped by Atlantic Records when we signed with Atlantic Records in 1969. We signed for six albums and I think we just made six albums and 30 years after the last two albums that Outlandic released ours, I didn't think they wouldIt didn't matter at all so we wanted a clean break and we wanted a fresh start I don't think it's fair to just blame one record company everyone went through the same metamorphosis these guys are lawyers and accountants they had no idea about music crosby stills and nash decided that They wanted to make some new music with or without a new record deal.
In 1998 they put up their own money and started recording, then Stills got a call from Neil Young who was working on a Buffalo Springfield box set. The two old friends met at Neil's ranch to listen to the tapes. from his first band we were basically reliving our childhood and I played this new song I was working on and I asked him if he could come and help David and Graham and I, you know, cut that, I thought it was a cool idea, so Unas Weeks later, I went there and actually didn't even call them. I just waited until I was on my way there and then called them from a bar.
Young started recording with Crosby Stills and Nash and soon they had more than an album's worth of material, I don't know, you're not guessing this anymore on the csn record, what are we doing? He said, well, it looks like we're headed to a csny disk, isn't it? I can see the third studio album. by crosby stills Nation Young was released in the fall of 1999. The group had made one album in the '70s, one in the '80s, and another in the late '90s. They called it "Waiting Forward," it speaks to everything I feel what do I want.
Looking forward I have done enough explaining what we did wrong in our middle years and I look forward to seeing how much fun we are going to have rediscovering the joy of being together. csny agreed to tour for the first time in 25 years, but the dates were called off when Graham Nash broke both legs in a freak boating accident. I have to tell you, as a musician, this was one of the strangest sounds I heard when I broke my legs and I thought I had really hurt myself here. I didn't think about it. the tour i didn't think anything of it graham had been boating with his family when a storm came up the waves threw him into the air when he landed back on the boat he broke his legs it was a two hour return trip later the accident on the boat a port and the way I fixed it was that I chose to ignore everything below my waist.
I went in my mind to a great sunset and my landing went with its waterfalls and its beauty and the two hours passed. Very quickly Nash's recovery was difficult but his spirit was strong and carried him through the year 2000 brought another medical surprise from David Crosby but this time he was happy the man who returned from a near death situation due to drugs in the years 80s and a liver disease in the 90s it was revealed that he was the secret biological father of the children of singer melissa etheridge and her partner julie seifert crosby told an amazed world that fatherhood is the wildest ride he has ever been on and that says something that crosby still follows nash and young had beaten the odds so many times that it would be hard to count them out again despite all their battles, all their talent and all the temptations that came with success, in the long run, music that they did and the love between them was always strong enough to bring them. together again we are more compassionate with each other we are more understanding of our own weaknesses and strengths we are more sensitive Nashes, do you know a gentleman?
He would always have put him in the center of the group. I think he's the central guy. graham is really great in the studio and works really hard to keep everything organized stephen explosive brilliant you know passionate guitarist musician singer writer how can you compete with steven stills? He's a great musician, you can't compete, you can't compete with Neil Neil is a brilliant and profound guy but a huge creative force and he changes the chemistry. I'm a bit of a lunatic. I can't categorize myself very well. David is more of the soul of the catalyst and the spiritual level of things.
You know somehow and then Steven uh he's just my brother I mean and I love playing guitar with them between the three of them, they'll never let me down you know we're just different you know we do a lot of things. There is space for each other and we listen to each other very assiduously as we did when we started as children. I must tell you that the feeling between the four of us has never been better. Are you thinking that you are living a reality? making you cry drives me crazy between you and me I won't like you good or bad but I have time to drive my baby, you don't have to cry
