Building my Flooded Bentley Continental GT Supersports into a Budget Race Car!

Apr 25, 2024
Hello what's going on? Welcome to another episode of B is for Building. In today's episode, we're starting our build series for our 24 Hours of Lemons car. We are going to build a new car this season to compete against Chris Fix and the car. What we are starting with is none other than my

flooded

Bentley Continental GT supercar, that's right, we are starting with a hundred and fourteen thousand dollar car to participate in a 500

race

and we will do it without breaking any rules. I'll explain how and I'll also build a

race

car in today's episode, stay tuned, so if you missed the episode where we got this bad boy, he was

flooded

to the roof during the last round of Florida hurricanes. and we bought it to use the drivetrain, we tried to start it and found that there were a lot of electrical problems and we decided that we would most likely need a new electrical system for the vehicle, but the engine and transmission are in good condition. so we bought this to use the powertrain, so how are we going to race it in a 500 racing series?

You might be wondering, so I said we're not going to cheat and we're not going to cheat and I said I'm going to race that Bentley and Lemons, so 24 Hours of Lemons is a racing organization that does drag racing in a really fun way. . The name of the game is not to take anything too seriously and go out and have fun, but they do want to. you bring 500 cars or sometimes they develop what they call loopholes. I think the best way to explain the loopholes very quickly is that the lemon guys got bored of seeing the same five different cars race all the time, so they started giving

budget

breaks for really unique things and after partnering with eBay Motors They started finding a lot of unique things on Ebay Motors and started giving out a lot more, what they call loopholes, they're not giving them out, they create the loopholes, they post them online and I hope someone takes advantage of them and this year we'll take advantage of one last year Chris he arranged that his car was a lot faster than ours this year well, we're bringing a car that's a lot faster than his and we're using a Lemon loophole, it's this one right here, this find of the week comes with full

budget

immunity , which means that the quote of 500 will not be applied to our invoice.

Consider bringing any Chrysler product with a Bentley body kit. This is a loophole we would love. have blown up over and over again, so I know that guys who drive lemons really love Bentleys for some reason, I do too and now I thought, you know? I don't want to cut the entire body off my Bentley Super Sport because I have a build in mind for this once we use the powertrain. I have a build idea and I really want to do it, but then I realized we can borrow the body panels from this Bentley, build a Bentley endurance racing car and then we can. bring what's left over this car has some very specific damage that won't be a big deal borrow some body parts let me show you let's look at the body parts that can be unbolted from this car Mudguards which are in good condition headlights toast front bumper toast Hood perfectly good shape let's not damage that on the racing bumper I already said toast for this fender toast that's what can be unscrewed from the front coming to the rear rear bumper toast toast tail lights full of salt water we'll fix them and Hopefully, they won't hurt themselves in the racing trunk lid, yes we use the gorilla style and cut it twice so it's toast so most of the parts that come off this car are already damaged and needed to be replaced so let's risk some good pieces in the hopes of not damaging them in the race.

Let's unscrew these pieces. We will borrow them from the Bentley with the plan of bringing them back to the Bentley. There is no permanent damage to the Bentley, so we can rebuild the Bentley later for a really fun project. Anyway, the first step of our build process will be to collect our Bentley parts and then go put them on our Chrysler, let's take the hood off. hood proudly displaying our salt water disaster I really want to get this running again and the running water didn't reach the engines I really want to try uh next we'll go after the bumper which may include taking some fender action, but mainly I'm just trying to remove this broken bumper in as few pieces as possible.
building my flooded bentley continental gt supersports into a budget race car
I'd like to call it a piece technically, it's still connected there. We took the bumper off, it broke a few more times. very very fragile, I don't know if that's because it's been in the Florida sunshine its entire life or if it's just the way it's made, it's made by a company called arrk. I think they made it for Bentley, although I don't think it's an aftermarket product. because it looks like the supercar bumper, so I guess we have two headlight bezels over there, but it looks like the other ones are broken over here, so I don't know if we'll use them long term, but let's go to the fenders, let's go ahead and remove the fenders, thanks oh boy the spinner was kind of a nightmare we had to uh I had to remove the wheel once we got the wheel off we had to remove the wheel liner once we got there.
In the wheel liner there was a water washer fluid tank that had filled up with salt water and mud and smelled like death, yes it still smells bad around here but we got all that off the fenders let's work on the next one side. where we have a nut stuck, this guy here spins freely, but we're going to try to keep this thing going if we take the fenders off, that means we're done with the front and then we can get up to the back before it gets dark. Fender number two. it's off and in the stack we're getting a big stack here Mudguards Bumpers and fender headlights I didn't want to show that because there's like a bolt point here Bolt point here Bolt point here and then there's a bolt point back here and the whole Access is blocked by this guy so I got mad and just ripped off the headlight and broke all the tabs, they are rubbish headlights anyway but this one seems to be better so I won't do that I hope.
The second headlight went out, I think I just broke one more tab than what was broken in the accident, yeah, so we're going good, so we're moving along the car, we're not going to borrow the doors, that's impossible, we can do a mold with these quarters. panels and reproduce them if necessary, but now we're back to the old chunky trunk, Triple Stars, Triple Stars, we might not be able to get the trunk out right now, well, it's getting dark and we don't have the right tools. We're doomed, we'll be back tomorrow, okay, we're back, we've got the right tools, let's go ahead and take off the trunk lid, it's so hot, the camera's overheated front impact bar, we get it from the bumper bar, we get some fender clips.
I have that rear bumper we have this baby um by the way fdrx7 is not for sale Porsche parts car parts just the thieves broke the window cut some coolant lines next to the engine and then now the ignition doesn't work uh is it for sale for parts yeah Anyone want to email me, Chris abuses the build, it's cheap and of course we take off the trunk lid, pick up the goods and go back to the store. It's a strange camera angle, but you'll understand why in a second, so we go back to In the store we have all the Bentley parts here and it's time to present our Chrysler.
We are going to put our body kit on it. It's our race car for this season. The guys now could have gone out and bought a Chrysler, but that would cost money. I just went to my backyard and grabbed it and abandoned the BMW, you got it here, come on, it's got the Moss and everything, now you guys remember this BMW, uh, during the apocalypse, we built this for Kyle and the turbo started smoking a little bit . I didn't feel like driving it, it ended up in my backyard for the last few years. Abandoned BMW. Now probably in this episode we'll get to our Loop keeping the loophole on how we're going to make this all 100 legit, but for now.
I want to get to work, let's go ahead and clean this up, leave it unattended, let's start removing the interior, make it more like a race car, now we have to remove the interior for safety, um and uh. and all that, we're on a tight deadline, we've got 10 days to turn this into a fully built Bentley race car, so yeah, a little less narration, a little more talking, wait, that's the same thing on that we are working on. The first hour of disassembly was better. than most people, what am I saying? We have the seats out, we have the door cards now, the regulations say if we want to roll down the window instead of removing it or breaking it like Kyle did last year, we would have to cover this area or put the door card back in. , so that's something to think about.
The seats are outside. Racing seats are making a comeback. Firefighting goes here with this car. We're not going to go too crazy with weight reduction. We have a very, very good power-to-weight ratio in this car, similar to the Bentley Continental GT super sport, so we'll just remove the mats and things that will get in the way and maybe catch fire while we're welding, other than that. We're going to try to leave some amenities like the subs so we can have a half-decent sound system to maybe play if we want, we're surfing the track, it was something I felt we were missing last time. race car of the year, but before we continue I want to do something interesting with our sponsor.
Today's episode is sponsored by Carly, it's a vehicle diagnostic tool and in my opinion it's the best one out there so we're going to use it on the 2008 BMW 335i Project Car, we're going to go ahead and plug it into our OBD2 port and we'll turn on the app on this car that's right next to your left foot, but it's normally bolted on, so turn the car back on and then turn it on. the app we will go ahead and press connect, it will connect to the vehicle with the OBD2 scanner that we just plugged in and we are connected, it has been a long time since we used this car so the first thing I want to do is run a Diagnostic and see how it looks compares to the last time we ran it.
This is a really complete diagnosis. History will be reviewed. Current failures will be reviewed. All kind of things. This car has been slightly modified. We give it a lot of extra boost, so we do have misfires from time to time and that's good to know. Wow, we could set a record for problems found. 62 telephone codes were found. Let's see what our results are when we jump into the engine. There is a misfire that I was talking about is kind of expected so what I like to do here is clear up the issues and then see and then do another scan and see what it looks like when they come back fine so there are a lot less errors. and we can go see which ones are still there, airbags that we know because we removed them, tail lights that we know, but we still have one with the DSC and that is brake pad wear, so it's okay because we changed the pads brake pads we've been racing on this car and it doesn't have the brake pad wear sign, but that's really good because it means our traction control is going to work and this app isn't just Diagnostics, there's a lot more. what you can do, let's review encryption and unlocking.
Hidden functions, so there are a lot of things here that we can customize, from wipers, lights and mirrors to dashboard functionality and even iDrive stuff. Oh, so, it's great to turn off the legal disclaimer. I don't want to see this anymore. Let's turn it off like this, that's it. I've been using Carly personally for years since they sponsored the first episode. I keep it in my camera bag I take it everywhere, it's that good, so guys check out the link. It's at the top of the description. Many thanks to Carly for sponsoring this episode. Go check out that link.
Pick one today. Let's get back to work. Okay, let's get naked again. Thank you. Foreign emergency completely gutted. It's time to start making spreader plates. that extended impact for our roll cage spacer plates, everything has a hint on this one, so now I'm going to move on to a part where I think many of you BMW lovers will absolutely hate taking the front end off of this vehicle. For example, we just borrowed parts from Bentley. We will simply temporarily remove the entire front end of this car and install Bentley parts. We're not going to damage anything.
We can put it back if we want. For later, I've never told you this, but I have another one of these, so there's a chance to put it in there too. I have to remove the entire front of this thing so we canget the front of the

bentley

. What about the thank you, well, say sayonara to that front part, okay, it just temporarily removes there, comes off in one piece, kind of a genius idea we had, we could take a mold of that. I'm going to keep that idea. in my back pocket I can take a huge mold of that and then just pop out new fronts like my drift car if I wanted to, the only problem is it makes the car really wide for a drift car and I don't know how big a kit it is. angular that makes a car so wide maybe it's fabulous but I'm not 100 sure anyway, you might also be wondering what the hell is going on here and this is fire safety, we have Oscar there, he is welding the spacer plates for the roll.
Cage and last year we set the car on fire, our Lemons race car and almost burned down the entire shop, so we have Oscar welding upstairs, Zane watching from below and then me on evacuation duty as a Tesla driver. so if everything goes wrong, I open the door if there is time or, if there is not, I go through it and pull the BMW with me out of the workshop so we don't burn it, the foreigner Oscar here doing a lot of welding all these separator plates, super cool, let's start to look at our boxes and where we wanted to place our A-pillars for these boxes to drive.
Climb up, run up the A-pillar, and come back as you join the Halo bar up here. We thought we were going to get away with these boxes here, but in relation to where your legs are and everything and where you're sitting, I don't think it's a good idea to put those boxes there, so we have to move the boxes further towards forward to have our vertical bar, but that means the dashboard will get in the way, so we're really sorry for BMW lovers. out there, but we need to cut this Dash, we're going to trim it as little as necessary, we'll make a nice clean cut, we'll even save the end cap, so hopefully we can disguise it. and put the end cap back in there, but yeah, we're going to have to uh, we're going to have to cut.
Move the box forward and then we'll achieve our vertical goal for today. Do you think we can get the Halo bar and those? The vertical bars nailed today will be a boost. I think that's okay, my goal will be to get the front hood and front fenders of the front bumper to at least look simulated with some brackets. Let's get to it, thanks. Okay, a lot of work has been done, but. uh, no big surprise, we missed our made up deadline of one day. I missed it by a mile. Oscar has a lot of work on the cage, all folded up and ready to be welded, so once we get to this position right here where we don't have the A-pillars yet, but we do have the rear hoop and the Halo bar.
It's like a dance of welding these things on top and then tilting it all forward so you can weld the top of them and then before we weld on our boxes for our A-pillars, we slide them back and then tilt them back. so we can weld the A-pillars in. It's a little dance you'll see, but that's so you can get full circumference welds on all the parts. around your cage and then you weld it to the base at the end, so Oscar is getting ready to start breaking it down. I have the hood mounted, it goes up and down, it's hinged but it doesn't have the uh, the front hood supports are done and then I'm going to mount the first of the fenders, it also looks a little silly at the moment because it's not in place right, but it's getting there, foreigner, thank you, thank you, thank you, all good, guys.
It's a few days later and we must say that we are behind schedule. Well, we had to do it. Fortunately, we changed the schedule. The carrier was supposed to pick up on Friday. They are now picking up on Monday, so once again it is possible. finish on time, but it's still going to be extremely difficult, but this is where we are, so we've got the front end on, the fenders have brackets, they're mounted firmly there, the hood hinges, it now has the locking latches, so which latches and it has a hood that opens so everything is good we are working on installing the front crash bar in case of that and Oscar has wrapped the roll cage the main part of the roll cage just one thing we have What to do now is add our harness bar that goes right there, but this is a very, very well built cage and Oscar, as always, did a great job, it looks super impressive and we met the requirements.
Jared changed the name of his YouTube channel. Now it's questionable. The garage was wrench every day. he's competing with us, so, yeah, he's a big kid, so we need a wide seat, he's like six feet and seven long legs, so we have the biggest Corbo seat and we had to make the most space possible for the seats. So you can see those door bars that go all the way to the door, um, and we have a big cage here, which makes me really happy, oh yeah, he is too because he's super tall, so we built these ceiling dividers. so we can get as much as possible.
There is also room on the roof as possible, so we thought tomorrow would be our last day, but we have two more days and then he goes on a truck to New Jersey, we will meet him there at Chris Fix's house and then we will go with Chris Fix to the race track. while we obliterate him and his team at the 24 Hours of Lemons New Jersey Motorsports Park on June 10 or 11 it's that weekend if you want to come I want to come see how we're doing now I told you how we're going to do this BMW, a Chrysler or At least we'll fit into the rules.
I'll show you in the next episode, once we get a little further, we've been trying to get in there as you can probably see and get as much of the stuff done as best we can so we don't have to finish it in New Jersey. . It would be good. We'll try to test this time on Friday before the race instead of just showing off a completely untested car. the race track, so make sure to tune in for the next episode, it's going to be a big transformation and it's going to look a lot more Bentley style.
See you and then peace abroad.
