house tour inside a quintessential maine home...

I moved here full time in 2018 and we bought the property in 2016 and you'll see the view here and when I saw the view, standing in our field, I fell in love. in love, even though the property had two very run down cabins, but it was a dream come true for me, this is our entrance, it is directly to the right when you enter the

house

and it may be small, but for me it is something exciting because it's the first time I've had an entryway in a

house

, and especially here in Maine with the seasons we have, it's great to have a place to hang your jacket, take off your muddy boots, and walk into the house. so I have these fun hooks here that are Tails whales, this is my happy place.

I bought this is a cottage, a Victorian cottage piece of furniture. I have a soft spot for these whimsically painted pieces that are found quite often here in New England, um, they date. to the late 1800's and early 1900's. I have some painted tin pieces and some old painted tin picnic baskets. I like anything that has a faux wicker or painted wood finish, a blue bench I bought at a local auction where you can sit and take off your boots and then this antique wicker sewing box that belonged to my mom, my mom, and my dad.

They lived in London for years and my mom was a big antiques collector and you'll see I have a lot of her things in my home, the stained glass window here on the front door is very special to our family. We had it at our house in Maryland, where we lived before, and it welcomed us into our home for many years, so we moved it here and put it in our house. here um and it immediately made this place feel like home on this wall here this half wall I have a collection of baskets a lot of them are some Nantucket baskets that I collected when I was there and then baskets that were my mom and my grandmother's.
Um, so this is a special collection that I have here. Now let's go to the mud room. Welcome to the mud room. This is another small space, but again, I've never had a mud room in any home I've ever owned. So I love this. The space is nice, it has its own entrance so you can come in with mud, muddy feet and muddy, muddy paws. I have this antique piece of pine that I bought at a local auction. It's great, it contains all kinds of things, including my recycling. Upstairs I have all my vases and baskets and things I use for flower arrangements.
These are some vintage blue and white transfer clothes that my mom gave me. My daughter made this at one of those painting parties. It was a painting. by number and that's my dog Maddie, who you'll meet later. Well, I have the washer and dryer here. Cabinets and then this is one of my favorite things in the house. It's a dog shower, which is very important here in Maine because. I have mud season and I have two dogs and this is great, they come in the door and jump up. I rinse them. It's also great for watering plants and rinsing brushes.
It's like my snc utility and I'm a relatively new grandma so it will also be great for rinsing Sandy's feet when they come home from the beach. I have some towel racks that I made out of old shoe shapes. These photos above are one of the oldest things I've had in the house they are pictures of an old book that were hanging in my oldest daughter's nursery when she was little so they bring back good memories and then I have shelves there that just They contain jars and treasures that I found by the water just for fun.
It's a small but hard-working room and it's really one of my favorite rooms in the house, which sounds a little crazy, but it's great to have this space where I can throw things away. It's great, I have the clothes right here before we had our laundry room in the basement and the house before that was actually in a shed in the backyard, so having it here, close to everything, is really nice. Just off the foyer is our main hallway and I'll take you there now and here we are. The entrance, one of my favorite things about this house is that when you walk through the front door you can look directly at the ocean.
It's the best welcome home ever. Some of the things I have here, one of my favorite things, is this. uh, old school foldout map of Maine that I found at a local antique store. I don't think it's ever been used because it's in perfect condition and I love having it, it just gives a sense of place right away when you walk in and it's fun for guests to be able to look in and see what's in here. Is incredible. It's probably from the early 1900s, but Maine hasn't changed much. The cities remain more or less the same.
Underneath I have a trunk, a small trunk painted with a candle. a boat I bought at an antique store and then a blue painted trunk I got at an auction, my favorite color is blue you'll see so it's perfect and then here's an amazing piece my parents brought back from London . They had it in their kitchen and when they downsized I was the lucky recipient and it was pretty far along, man, in the process of building the house and it's a big piece of furniture so I was lucky to have a place for it. and it's hidden here in the hallway and it's great, not only does it look great, but it has tons of storage space and on top of it is a part of my mom's amazing blue and white transfer vintage clothing collection, like I said they lived in. in London and my mum used to go to all the antique markets and exhibitions and antique shops and she has a huge collection.
I have this one, I have some more. I have two sisters, they both have collections and my dad still has some. How incredible and vast her collection was, but they are so special to me that she loved them so much and for me to have this piece of hers in the house is something wonderful, something I like to do when I fix things. I like to go, I like a symmetrical arrangement to a certain extent, but I also like to add similar pieces that are a little bit asymmetrical, so you can see it, this kind of movements to the right here, um, and then I also like to add. in one thing that is not like the other, so I have a bird that is made of a brown plate up there.
I have no design experience. I have always loved it, even since I was a child. I remember I painted my The walls in my room were bright yellow and I had yellow and orange furniture and I decorated my college dorms. It's always been something I loved and when I retired and moved here, something I wanted to focus on a little more. And you know, when we built the house I knew I had this amazing canvas to work with, so it's been a lot of fun, so the floor here in the entry hall in the hallway here is the court site and it's definitely something we did.
I chose because of the climate here in Maine so you can come in with your muddy shoes or wet feet or whatever and it won't get damaged and then the rest of the house has or the main spaces have pine floors. I also love the way this quartz place picks up the stone we used for the fireplace again, as this is a space to work hard at. I also chose to cover the walls with tongue and groove panels because it can withstand bumps and dents. all better than drywall. I also like how she definitely finds this space as her own.
The downstairs is quite open and pleasant. There are different ways I have defined each space, whether through the floor, walls or ceiling. treatments, I'll show you more of this bench here is another piece that I got from my parents um I think they got it in England um and I think it was an old bench on a sleigh or a carriage or something like that um but they kept it next to the door in your family room, so the door leading outside serves the same purpose here. One little detail that I think is fun is above the new post on the stairs.
I took and found some. The beach rocks I attached again are a little nod to the beautiful place I live. Here we are in the living room, so the living room and dining room are practically open to each other, except for the stone fireplace that is located. in the middle and this is literally and figuratively the heart of the house. The stone was actually quarried locally. This is an area where we used to have a lot of granite quarries and apparently these were the waste and were used as fill. the property when the original cabin was placed here, so when they dug to excavate the basement and foundation, they found all this rock and my builder was kind enough to save it for me because it's the only thing I didn't pay for when this house was built , but it's just a beautiful fireplace, the bricklayer did an amazing job, and then this mantel was actually salvaged from the original cabin that was here, it's the only thing I kept, this is one of my favorite areas when I first moved in .
I was looking for some kind of meaningful art to put up here and couldn't decide on anything and finally decided I would change it up depending on the season, so this is my early summer decor. I change it for Christmas and fall. I actually have a lot of fun with it, it's a two-sided fireplace so you can see through it, so you can also see it from the dining room, and sitting in front of the fireplace are Maddie and Cisco, his favorites. swivel chairs um I'm a big fan of the slip cover because Maddie and Cisco are big fans of the furniture so I also change it seasonally in the winter.
I have a cozy thin thing like a sheep that I put on them um and they have their flowers on for the summer for the mantle display for the summer I just have a net that I put in there some driftwood something like something collected some shells um one little buoy um and this was a piece that I found actually at an estate sale in Maryland is a piece of driftwood that has shells and rocks and sealed glass that I added over time and I just nailed it right into the chimney. This is an old Bavarian marriage cabinet that is. my most recent acquisition here I wasn't looking for a piece.
I walked into an antique store that was closing they were having an amazing sale and the next day I brought this home I just fell in love with it it's just the perfect colors I love the painted design and the best thing was it actually has my name on it maiden name and the initials of my last name so I felt like it was meant to be for me, plus these are vintage pet carriers. one that I bought at an estate sale in Maryland and it even came with the little food basket that they put the pet food in with the label saying like the name of the pet and where it came from, it's great.
Here it is. the main seating area in the living room is a long narrow space so Divi ended up dividing it into sort of three sections so there's the seating area by the fireplace where Maddie and Cisco like to lounge and then This is the main area. seating area um we have a family of eight adults um so I wanted somewhere to sit for everyone so that's how I ended up with a loveseat and then three chairs um again slip covers all around because I just like the fact that I can throw them in the washing machine and also change them depending on the season in the winter.
I add cozier, darker fabrics. I like to mix and match my cushions. I also change them depending on the season. I have a lot of fun with different fabrics and patterns. of my inspiration in this house, especially in this downstairs living room from the outside from the view from my windows, um, for example, I thought this fabric was really fun, it has lobster fishing boats, um, I have something I like seagulls. I have this collection of carved seagulls that I have purchased at auctions and antique shows and I love themthis group with their friends outside the windows and then I have some old seagull prints that I have on the walls. and then I have the Big Kahuna here.
I call him Godzilla, the seagull that ate my living room. It's a reprint of an old painting, but I felt the room needed something big here, so I have a giant seagull hanging. my wall, this dresser is the first piece of furniture I want at auction. I have this, as I mentioned, for antique Victorian painted cottage furniture and these pieces date back to the late 19th century. And I fell in love. I love this piece, it has these amazing bucolic scenes painted on it, faux wood grain and I was ready to fight for this and the auction started and if you have ever been to an auction, the bidder, the auctioneer starts with a certain thing and then the price will drop until someone activates and he kept falling and falling and no one else was acting and it dropped to $35.
I was the only bidder and I walked out of there a very happy woman and I still love this piece, it's a one of my favorites at the top. a bowl of dough and some wire containers with just a big pile of seashells. old prints, seashell prints and then this was painted by an artist who found me through Instagram and she painted this gallery wall with Maddie lying on the couch and I think it's so fun to have a photo of this wall hanging on this wall. in this corner there is some kind of work table, puzzle table, this is where I work on my blog and more of my seagull prints here, this pine table that I bought at an estate sale in Maryland before the house was built home, so I'm glad I found a good place for it.
I love visiting local antique stores, auctions and antique shows and buying things for the house. I would probably say that apart from the sofas and soft furniture in the house, you know almost everything. it's antique or vintage I love the character it brings to a home the soul um things that have a story before you even bring them through the door a lot of my pieces came from my parents um so it's a wonderful reminder of my mom who picked um and last but not least, I like that they're already set in so I don't have to worry about them getting knocked or knocked or you know, if they're worn out.
I feel like that gives it more character and you don't need to worry about ruining it from the living room, we have access to the terrace so let's go outside. One of the best things about this house is that we have this big wrap around terrace with views of the ocean from here, we have a seat here. area um I moved the Wicker CTI from Maryland it was on our porch there for many years and I wasn't going to bring it with me and my daughter said she just put it in the to go box so I did it and I'm so glad I did.
The other furniture was made locally from cedar. This is not a fancy porch with big, comfortable furniture. This is Maine. We keep things pretty basic. The weather here hits us. I love how all of this has worn down to this gray. I made this table from a board I found washed up on the shore with a small support. I have pieces of Driftwood and then this is the classic lobster trap master coffee table, which is kind of You have to have one of these if you live on the coast of Maine, but I love how it's all worn and distressed and just perfect, and I found these really cool shutters with the ship cutouts at a local antique store and I think they look perfect coming this way, we have more seeds for people to enjoy the ocean view and then a dining area here with a teak table again.
I love how it suits the ocean silver. I prepared this just for an informal meeting. Eat on the deck with some fun Cascada fish or nautical themed dishes and a little red, white and blue for the upcoming vacation. Last year I painted these buoys, these buoys that I found at an antique place and I painted them with blue and white stripes facing up, that's our wildflower meadow. I let it go wild in the summer and it is full of different flowers all summer long. I love it and it's great for pollinators. Let's now enter the dining room.
This is the other side. The stone fireplace I differentiated from the other one by having a stone mantel instead of wood and then it has a floor level hearth instead of the raised hearth on the other side just to mix it up, unlike the other side. I leave this blue and white here all year round and just change things up by adding different things to the mugs on the mantel shelf. This is a pattern called barley and hops, it is probably the old pub used which is surprising that it is still in this kind of condition, this was again my mom's, it was one of my favorite groups that she had and I am very grateful to have it here.
Unfortunately I broke a piece last year, it made me very sad, on top of some traditional willow plates as well as a very fun one with a bunny pattern and then again to tie in place. I have these muscles and clam shells. A wreath made of muscles and clam shells hanging here in the summer. On this side I hang this flag. It is not the Danish flag, which many people ask me, it is a nautical flag, it represents the letter attracts all together and again a couple of chairs by the fireplace that you can sit in and it's nice that someone can sit and be comfortable here and talk to the cook in the kitchen who is right there in this corner.
I have a corner pine hut that came from a local antique store and I filled it with a collection of antique sponges. I saw this on another Instagram account and fell in love immediately. I was lucky. I bought most of it at two different auctions. I was lucky to win it. so I filled it completely and then on top of it I have a jumble of ropes and buoys and this is a rope boat bumper. I like its disorder. I am a firm believer. That when collecting you should display all your items together in a group for the greatest impact and I also believe that when they are organized and displayed together it doesn't look as cluttered as it could if you have a lot of different things together or spread out. everywhere because I think your eyes read this as a whole instead of all the different pieces here in this window is where I have my plants.
I never had much green thumb, but somehow they seem to like it here. maybe you like the view, I don't know, it's very important to me during the winter, which is very long and dark here in Maine, to have this green, so I keep bringing plants home, the dining room table that I had made new . bring back Pine um our family loves to cook, sitting down to eat together is something very special to us so I wanted to have a big table that our family could gather around for many years and it would extend to both ends so I'll be able to see lots of grandkids to come I set the table um when I set a table I usually like to keep it pretty simple um I know I have a lot of things all over the house but I don't like a table that is I have a lot of things so, just simple placemats wicker, some blue striped plates.
I love a block print for napkins. I just received these cool little lamps that I think are great. With pretty Raffia screens for the centerpiece. It's not very big, flowers don't suit me well, they don't last long and they end up dropping petals everywhere, but I like to have something natural in the center of the table, so for this I made starfish. pumpkins in the fall um, I've made oranges in the winter and again I keep my centerpiece very simple. I often have a stack of bowls. I have some wooden bowls that I stack. I just like it, it's neat, it's clean and I always like it.
I have it on a hallway, the chairs I chose are from Serena and Lily, they are the classic French Beastro chair, of course, in blue and white. I've always wanted a set of these chairs and I like the modern touch they give them. with everything you know, all the antiques that I have here look fresh and clean and they're really comfortable and then I have the matching bar stools here, this is a lot of people's favorite corner in my house, again, it's another part. of fun painted victorian cottage furniture I love the design of this um.
I turned it into a sink but I turned it into a little drinks table um and with this rope lamp that was a gift to me and then this wall of plates that I made when I first bought these are the plates that I bought there Plates L um that I found at a local antique store um and I had them all lined up symmetrically and I just looked at it one day and I was like it's not working for me so I've created this kind of thing that flows organically. I added a couple of dishes.
I recently added these two lobster dishes. um there's a couple oysters in there, but I love how it starts on a wall. and travels upwards and then, for me one thing is not like the other, I added a carved wooden fish that I bought from a friend here. I like to use some interesting containers for my plants. This is an old bucket painted with wood grain and then this piece is. a large old flower container I found at an antique show that contains MADD and Cisco's dog food. This Pine Hutch I moved from Maryland is one of the only pieces I moved and the architect designed a space for it.
I love how it is. in the dining room, but it's also in the kitchen, so it has an informal feel. In the summer I have it filled with my collection of Cornish clothing, another thing I saw online and fell in love with immediately and in fact, I bought most of my collection in one fell swoop from a woman who was getting rid of it and I did this kind of shady driving and met in the parking lot of the liquor store in New Hampshire to buy it from him, so that was pretty fun, but again, I feel like when you put it all together into one thing, everything together makes that appears controlled and cohesive as a whole.
I bought this, the breadboard, and the paint at the Brim Field flea market, which I've been to twice. It is such. It was a blast, and when I did the arrangement here for the summer, I replicated the three pieces there, so I have a striped bowl and an alligator and then a presentation, so that was fun, just some little details that what I would like to do right next to the dining room is the kitchen let's get in there this kitchen is very much a working kitchen um um it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that I see in so many kitchens um these days, but it's just perfect for I um I chose the cabinets two tone um I like the idea of a white kitchen but I didn't want it all white I love how the wood in the background warms things up um these are actually red birch and it's the exact same cabinets that I had in our house in Maryland, which I love very much.
Kitchen back in operation. I like to keep my pots outside. This pot rack was actually made from plumbing parts. My builder was a hard worker so I love the big farmhouse sink. Of course the backsplash tile had to be blue last year. I made a fun little project. I lined the back of the glass cabinets with peel and stick wallpaper, which is a nice touch and very easy to do. The countertops are white quartz. with a little bit of marbling last year I also did a project where I painted the floor with a blue and white checkered pattern and I love how it brightens the space.
I love how it contrasts with the wood cabinets and also It's nice in an open concept space to have something that separates the spaces so the floor, the painted floor, starts in the kitchen. I also did that on the ceiling, there is a painted board ceiling which also differentiates it from the pine beams we have. in the dining room and living room, this is my beautiful Blue Blue Star stove. I fell in love with this one the moment I saw it. It's a Workhorse. It feels like the kind of stove that will be here for years and years.
There are generations that are going to use this stove. I really love it and placed it here on the island so the cook can enjoy the view and also chat with the people in the dining room. This is my pantry cabinet. Don't have. a fancy walk in cabinet but I love this and I wanted it to look like a piece of furniture instead of a cabinet so it's different it has the bead board front and I color matched the stove. This wall is another one of my collection wall displays. These are different types of fish molds.
I had a lot of fun picking them up and arranging them so this side has the kitchen island, the other side has my kitchen, this side has a seating area, something I've never had. In any of the houses I've had, I love it because this is where I have breakfast every morning and I have a sneaky TV here in the kitchen, so it's nice to sit here in the morning and watch the morning news that I mentioned. I'm not very big, I don't do big flower arrangements, but I like to go out to our wildflower field and pick wildflowers, so it's loop season here in Maine, so I went out and picked some of them this morning, as well as some others, um, that I like to have shown.
That's my kind of arrangementfloral. Casual, now let's go up to the master bedroom. Welcome to the master bedroom. The cabin that was on the property before um was only one story so I was really excited to see it. what the view would look like from the second second floor, this is probably the best view of the house you get when you walk through the door and the architect designed large windows to take in everything. This is a small seating area. which we have right when you walk in. I bought this old mantel at an estate sale in Maryland.
I didn't know where I was going to put it when we moved here and it finally found its resting place here. I painted it a dark color. green and then for fun I filled it with books and then I took it to the shelf of the book theme in front of me so this is my little book nook or my reading nook. um, this is a painting of my kids when they were little, so it's a very, very special one for me, a nice comfortable chair to sit on and read, the wicker furniture, the table and chairs were pieces that my mom found in a property sale and they have the best old, chipped, worn and worn paint, and I love the feeling that they are casual and relaxed and not too perfect.
The bed is some kind of masterpiece. in the room it started with this headboard that was part of a Victorian cottage piece set I found at a local antique store that came with a headboard, sink, dresser, and table, and the old beds are only full size , so I wanted to make it into a queen size bed, so I asked a craftsman to make it into a canopy bed. He did an amazing job and for fun added for the finals at the top they are all shells which speaks to the arrangement I have hanging. the bed um, which are sailor valentines, is a collection that our family had I used to vacation in Nantucket.
I bought most of them there and they are one of my most treasured collections. Victorian cottage furniture was known for its extravagant paintings, but this one had a board. just an exquisite piece with this incredible view of the water, the boats, the trees and everything. I think it's just absolutely spectacular AB and seems so perfect for my location as if it were made for me all those years ago. It ties back to the location again, it's fabulous that it has shells and wildflowers um my theme here is kind of a meadow and sea um because we have the wildflower meadow on one side and the ocean on the other for this piece here The same craftsman who he made the bed he took the top of the table and then he made a dresser, a little nightstand with drawers, which I love.
Here are more wicker pieces. I love using wicker indoors. I love the informal. The main feeling of New England is that it has to do with my family, the Galler gallery of all my children, this work of art is special. It was painted by a woman named Colleen Spiker who sadly passed away last year, but I have a couple of mermaids in the house. I love more wicker pieces from The Collection. My mom bought this dresser here. It's like the bed. It's a mix of things. The base is from an auction and then I added the mirror that goes with the bed on top. to mix it up and on top of that I have these fun Old Shell trinkets that are bathing beauties sitting on top of shells and rocks and stuff.
I think they are charming. One of the rooms we have upstairs is called the captain's room. um it's named after this guy, it was originally called a headbanger bedroom because you can see it has very sloping ceilings. um, as soon as he heard the name, my son, who likes hard rock music, definitely claimed it was his room because it was the headbanger's room, although he's the tallest in the family so I don't know if he ever He hit his head here. This room is very small, but I love it. It's old and hidden under the eaves.
It feels like it's a room in an old house and not a new one. I love painting the walls in a small room a dark color, so these are a deep navy blue. The bed is another one I had. It's another antique bed I made. um, made full size again. a beautiful scene painted on it. I love it on top of the bed. I've done another gallery wall. I love making a collection like this because it's like it's been collected over time. These are all sailing ships with the captain in the middle. the bedding has a nautical theme um it's schwitzer linen with this beautiful embroidered rope this dresser was another piece that my parents bought in London it's the prettiest piece um I love the painted detail it was in a bedroom um guest bedroom in in his house some watercolors collected around the edges and here in the window I have another piece from my parents this is an old dough container my grandfather I come to collect honestly my grandfather was a collector my mom was a collector um and my one of the things that my Grandpa collected it was trees, it was old pieces of wood um and he was a judge so he also had a lot of gavels so this is his thing.
I put it in a bowl. This is everyone's favorite lamp. I found this at Here's an Antique Show. I don't know why the sailor doesn't have a head, but he's pretty funny. So he's the party sailor or the headless sailor, but he has a lampshade on his head. This is a small desk during Co, when my children came to visit. I realized that everyone needed some places to work, so here is a small desk that my daughter-in-law usually works at when she comes to visit. I bought this at a local auction. I love this knot board, also from the same auction.
I'm just going with the nautical theme and old Courier knives, um, on the floor here. I have a very fun, casual, blue and white checkered rug. I love its casual feel. Now I want to show you our upstairs hallway bathroom. This is our upstairs. hall bathroom this house was a new construction, there is a tradition in Maine that houses are passed down from generation to generation, being houses that the family goes to for years and with precious summer memories, collections and everything, and I wanted that our house here had that kind of feeling. I hope that one day my children will want this house so that we can pass it down from generation to generation.
So even though it's a new build, I wanted it to feel old and I wanted it to feel collected. over time and for this bathroom I feel like it embodies that feeling again, it's hidden under the eaves. I chose tongue and groove paneling and instead of a tile floor I chose a very simple painted wood floor, it feels so old. For me, I purchased this apothecary vanity from Pottery Barn. I love the very basic feel, a simple mirror that's attached to the wall like it's nothing fancy, but updated and modern, with good plumbing and good fixtures, and everything we split into the two bathrooms here.
They are divided into two separate rooms, this is particularly nice when all the kids are here because people can brush their teeth and wash their face, whatever it is, someone can use the shower, so there is a sliding door that closes to let it work like this. two different spaces, something that is super notable and really has a big impact is this incredibly cool wallpaper that I made, it's from nautical chart wallpapers and this is actually our Cove from the windows where they take the actual nautical charts and they exploit them and Can you? These are custom colors I made to match the floor.
I think it adds an amazing sense of place to this room. Here it is on the other part, we have a larger area of nautical charts. Here I have them. the wall over there, simple wicker, this one I think is really fun, I bought it at an antique store. Things here are pretty basic, but I love the fancy weave of all this wicker with all that, since he's supposed to be a good ol' boy. The master bathroom is just a plain old tub that my plumber actually picked out, not a fancy tub on the wall, the tiles and surround of the tub are a beautiful blue, which was the color that inspired the floor, um, and everything here for storage. just an old chest of drawers, nothing special, some blue and white striped cubes here and then I have two prints which are by local senior artist Sarah Fitz.
I chose them before the house was even built, as if I had a vision. I knew where they were going. to hang and I think they are wonderfully summery and nautical. Home for me, above all, is a refuge, it's a place to feel safe, get away from the world, a crazy crazy world, it's a place for my friends and family to come, relax and rewind. more than anything, this house is alive when you are here with me, thanks for coming to Homeworthy, it was great seeing you, thanks for looking, be sure to visit Homeworthy decom for exclusive content buying guides and much more.
