Amy Poehler Doesn’t Like People

-Our first guest is an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress. She directed and stars in the movie "Moxie," which is now on Netflix. Let's welcome back to the show one of the greatest of all time, Amy Poehler. Hi Amy! -Hi, friend! -You know, I'm going to tell you this, and it's true, because I think this is the third time we've talked in the last year: you keep looking better and better on Zoom. -Oh Lord. Well, happy COVID verse. -Thank you so much. -Every March 11, me, you, Phoebe Bridgers, let's meet, let's talk about our year. -I would like that, I think. -I was just thinking the other day that yours was the first show I did when I started doing press for "Moxie." And now you are the last press article I am doing.

Full circle. -And usually, this would be a trip in which you would have to be on tour talking about your film. You've been talking about it the same amount, but you've been at home. Have you enjoyed the local press tour? -A lot. You know, I know it's not that fun and I can't wait to get back to your studio, see everyone, and see you in person. But, you know, one of the misconceptions is that I don't really like

. -Mm-hmm. -And it's great, because I don't have to be close to anyone. -Yeah. -And that's great. -Well, I think that's why

people

value being your friend so much, it's because from the outside people assume that you are everyone's friend. but we've actually overcome a challenge to be in a place where you're willing to spend time with us. -You can literally count on one hand.

I can count on one hand. How many people I like. But you make that list, Seth. You make that list. -You know who else is in that hand are Maya, Kenan and Tina, and you and Tina hosted the Globes again. Fourth time. And Maya and Kenan showed up, and what a delight they were. -What a treat. -And it caught my attention, I was confused, because, of course, Kenan did "SNL" on Saturday, but then he was in the middle of the Globes in Los Angeles. -For people who haven't seen the show, they played the winners of the least original song, and they showed up, and Tina had written this part for them, and in beautiful form, Maya arrived already dressed and ready to party, and Kenan had flown.

I came straight from New York the night before and we hadn't read the outline yet, and we were about to hit the ground running. Those two are geniuses, they are like specialists. You know, like when you see a stuntman about to do a trick and they're joking around and they're very relaxed? And they just say, "Oh, are you going to jump off this building?" "No, not if he pushes me first." They are so good at their job that they were... it was amazing to have them around. They are the best. -It should be noted that it was not simply about reading lines on a teleprompter.

There was also prop work. A fantastic joke is that Maya reached under her dress and took off three high heels. She-she had three shoes. -And she did it without problems. I mean, again, you know me, terrible. You put a prop in a sketch and then you basically see me staring at it for the entire scene, because I'm so nervous about what I'm going to have to do. While she, so gentle and perfect. -Yes, they are incredible. And that night was so strange, and you know, you're looking at an audience that's separated and masked, and you can't really tell when someone's laughing, because no one's laughing like...

No one's laughing like you think they're going to. to laugh. Know? Everyone laughs and maybe that's how their body moves. So you can't tell if maybe they're falling or if they're laughing, you can't tell. So to be on stage with that strange sci-fi quality and with those two was just a dream. -I have been backstage at the Globes that you have organized. It's a really fun energy backstage and then there's the added energy of the after party. I guess none of that happened. -No food or drink was allowed. -Without food or drink? -Zero. -So what was backstage? -I had to strain carrot sticks and my own water.

And at one point, I talked to Tina on Zoom and she was eating something. I was like, "What are you eating?" She said, "I'm eating sushi." I was like, "Where did you get the sushi?" So that was it. New York had sushi. -Well, I think that's the real thing... You were leaning towards the stereotype of Los Angeles, that all you had was water and carrot sticks. -Yeah, I mean, we had tons of pills and we all went for a walk. -Oh, then the pills were allowed. -Of course the pills were.
