ANTLERS (2021) Ending Explained

Apr 29, 2024
Hello, what's up everyone? Welcome to the movies found in this entry. We explain that we're watching Antlers, where a small-town teacher and her brother, the local sheriff, discover that a young student is hiding a dangerous secret that could have terrifying and deadly consequences, so this is one. which I was looking forward to for a long time, but was an unfortunate victim of the delays that came more than a year after what was initially supposed, based on the trailer, it looked like it was going to be a really bloody and terrifying experience, but it's true that It wasn't as strictly horror as I thought, in some ways this was a bit disappointing, but I'm also sure it's based on having to wait so long to finally see it that it would have been hard to live up to that buildup of horror. hype, don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's actually very good, it's a little different than what I anticipated.
antlers 2021 ending explained
It's much more about personal trauma and how we carry it with us throughout our lives. It focuses much more on the horror side. things end up feeling a little underwhelming, it has some great gore moments and the Windigo looks amazing in the part we see him in, but this again is more about our characters' struggles and makes things feel a little more depressing in general. It's a bit sad more than anything, regardless of the fact that it's exceptionally well-crafted and able to subtly cover a lot of different topics with the story being told, so we'll cover all of that and look at Windigo himself and how he works.

and answering some lingering questions we are left with, we begin with a gruff voice informing us of a possible reason behind the resurgence of the windigos, mother earth has been plundered and that rape has awakened the malevolent spirit that seeks the fragile ones. and the depraved in the small Oregon town where our story takes place, we see an example of Mother Nature being purged. An old mind that seems to have been off for some time. A young Aiden wanders around banging on some pipes and stops when he hears a strange, distant screech.
antlers 2021 ending explained
He runs back to a truck just as his father gets out of it. Frank is a pretty greasy guy and orders his son to stay in the truck. This place is not good for children. He re-enters the tunnels putting on a gas mask and hears a low growl inside, he descends further into the bowels of the mine and reaches what looks like a drug manufacturing facility with his friend Terry, there are more screams. , which they find strange since the place isn't supposed to be open for a few weeks, bellows again and it's definitely an otherworldly sound, but Frank assumes it must be an animal, has his friend come with him to Check it out and enter another tunnel with many bags hanging from the ceiling, probably a barrier of some kind designed for protection, seeing small particles that look like embers in the air, the shadow of a creature emerges and proceeds to rip Terry to shreds while Frank shoots him.
antlers 2021 ending explained
Blindly moments later, Aidan approaches the door when he sees that those embers are now also out here, he shouts into the void calling for his dad and enters, disappearing into the darkness three weeks after the attack on the mine we meet the downtrodden Professor Julia , who has just returned to the city after many years. She leads the class in a discussion about storytelling, it is a way of explaining people's worlds and cultures so they can pass on these customs and beliefs. along with the next generation, you know what I mean, if there's a school scene like this in a movie, it's always very important the themes and this is no different for Oregon specifically, we have the Native American Indians who started this in the area and of course, a windigo is one of its own myths.
She asked the class to give an example of a story and only one girl in the class seems interested in participating. This must be a regular occurrence as Julia scans the room for anyone else to respond, only to receive a silent nod of no in response, which also includes another child, Lucas, who seems a little malnourished. and dirty, busy scribbling something in a sketchbook. Another redhead boy in the class has caught Lucas's sock monkey and pretends to fuck him looking quite amused with himself afterwards. class lucas gets his backpack back and as the monkey returns the boy reminds him that he raped the toy, stomps on the desolate town and bet the town was once prosperous but everything changed when the mine closed and is now mostly in As a result , he staggers and encounters a skunk near the mine and grabs a rock with the intention of killing it.
He arrives home carrying the animal and approaches a door with two randomly installed locks, places an ear to listen and sighs deeply before opening it. Although it's still unclear, Frank is their father and Aiden is their brother, so after what happened in the mine, they somehow ended up locked in the house and the delicious skunk meat must be for them, ah, what we do For the family, right? He's not the Only one in town suffers trauma when we meet Julia at a corner store and she can't help but be drawn to these sweet drinks on display.
She's never actually hinted at more than that, but the implication is that she drank. she problem and she is currently struggling to stay sober, however, she keeps her nerve and just grabs a piece of gum avoiding the alcoholic allure. A radio report gives us more background on the reopening of minds thanks to the government rolling back environmental regulations to revive the coal industry. They are reopening several small town mines, the hope is that this will prevent what is being described as an energy crisis, of course that is not good for the planet for a multitude of reasons, probably why everyone is angry. a piano triggering a memory from her past as she sees a shadowy figure looming above there is a flash of her as a girl hides and a boy starts walking down the stairs towards her it must be that her father was abusive and that is why he left her home in the first place, coming back all those years ago has started to make those repressed memories start to come back, whether she wants them or not, her brother cuts Sheriff Paul comes home from work asking how school was, she cringes shoulders and says it was more or less the same.
He suggests giving her some time to warm up to her, but she doesn't think that's what it's about and the whole setup of indifferent and uninterested children is a little disappointing for her as she sees some family photos on the wall, including her father. she. she can't even stand to see them taking more and putting them face down in a pile, establishing some sort of trauma bond with her and the boy. He is looking at his own family photo and just like Julia's father, Frank must not have been the best father either seeing as he has been removed from the scene, if that wasn't bad enough, it sounds like his dear old Dad was turning into some kind of monster, a grammatical voice calls out to the boy and he starts banging violently on the door to get it.
Thank goodness you have those locks, damn, we see that the relationship between the brothers seems perhaps a little tense. Paul complains about Julia moving his things and she replies that she just wanted more space and promises that she will move out as soon as she can, he clarifies that he didn't say anything about that and reveals why he is a little nervous, which again illustrates how Things are bad in the city. Another family is being evicted, where they have a whopping 15 minutes to pack up all their belongings and leave, hopefully at least they will have a car, which he says a lot of them don't do well, it's a job quite painful and thankless, she laments that she hardly recognizes this place anymore, he tells her that many things can change in 20 years, sarcastically referring to it as our little piece of paradise in class, Julia again asks Lucas to read a story knowing that they have been working on something and that helps us piece together a little more about a situation.
It is the story of three bears, the big one, the little one and the little bear, the little bear. He used to take care of the bears but he got sick and lost his job one day the bear came home and the others were different the bear's illness had gotten worse he had become angrier and meaner because they had no food but at least they still had Among us based on that we can interpret that his family is the three bears, of course Frank must have lost his job and without food on the table he was forced to resort to making drugs, that is the problem in this small town with the attack they were simply already at the house when he arrived that day and even so he realized that they had changed after school the bully and his friends grab their bags where they give them a surprise prank that Lucas has filled the head of the monkey that The Red-Haired Boy is not a fan of, he retaliates by banging his head on a window trying to get poop in his mouth after the nurse checks him.
Julia looks at the boy's student profile and decides to call her house. He leaves in a dark space hearing more footsteps and knocks on the door accompanied by primal growls through a crack in the door we take a look at Frank's current state his eyes darken and he is definitely transforming into something else on the way home Lucas looks sullen as always and when Julia sees him she decides to follow him after illustrating the state of the city again, we see that there is a long line outside a rehabilitation center that is located right next to an ice cream parlor, well, it's a bit Strange, Lucas looks wistfully inside as Julia enters.
She then asks him to join her, she does some clever lines of questioning to get more information from the boy, starting by asking him about his brother, Lucas informs her that he is at home with your mom, she questions him, but he corrects that his Mom is dead, she tells him that they have something in common, she lost her mom when she was 12 years old. the same age as the boy is now she asks more about Aiden if he goes to our school and Lucas tells her that he is not always with my dad anymore she tries to ask more questions but he stops her before answering urging her not to follow him this time , this time he does his usual tracking with his mind and finds a butchered raccoon, yes, meanwhile, Julia drives home and seems strangely calm and lifeless, she knocks softly, but is greeted.
There is no answer, luckily she finds the door open before entering, she hears Frank growl and bang on the door and wisely decides to leave here in a hurry. She later pieces together a torn drawing she found of Lucas staging a scene of a big fanged monster with a scared child in its mouth, Paul surprises her and wonders what that is. She changes the subject to her own family drama and offers that he has every right to resent her and that he doesn't blame him if he does. She goes on to say that he. She couldn't have understood it then, but she couldn't stay in the house anymore, but it wasn't easy for her to leave her younger brother.
She spent her entire life trying to deal with the fact that she left him, as well as sorting out her own. To problems he responds warmly and has been praying all her life for her to return. He's just happy to have her home. Lucas prepares the feast of her festering flesh for her family by bringing them portions on a tray, slides it into the darkness and there is a sudden wildness. Growling followed by Frank emerging from the shadows and devouring the meat, he retreats and Aiden comes out still looking relatively normal compared to his father and even Lucas seems to be giving him scraps of real food, you know, instead of pieces of raw meat, a important distinction there it is. like he knows his father is already too far away to save him, but maybe he can still save his little brother.
More grunts send him running downstairs where he, after locking it this time, places a similar mine guard on the door, but how do you know? about that with julia more disturbing memories begin to bubble as she clinks the ivories a dark figure gets closer and closer behind her and he feels a sensation putting a hand under her shirt a girl's voice begs no dad, you're hurting me oh well now we get the full depth of what she was experiencing as a child at the hands of her father, all kinds of abuse, it seems strange, then we see him naked in bed holding a teddy bear and shaking and I'm not sure what's that about once again, Paul scares.
Coming back to reality, he pretends that everything is fine, but admits that it is not and speaks frankly to her. He sounds like a slacker upon learning that Paul has cited and revived him more times than he can count due to drug overdoses. tells him that this is the drawing of her son that she found, he thinks that, all things considered, it makes sense, he sees that there is a sort of metaphorical layer to this, particularly with the monster that his father is becoming, which It also represents the abuse the family has suffered due to his actions. monster of life, so to speak, this is also the reason why julia feels a growing bondwith the boy because he can relate because of his own trauma, trauma, friends, naturally, in light of all this, she doesn't understand why he isn't in jail, but Paul presents the impossibility of the situation if he takes Frank to There won't be anyone left in prison to take care of the kids, and apparently a court found that guy fit enough to be their guardian.
She raises her concerns after visiting the house, particularly the very strange sounds she heard and he reprimands her for doing that, you can't just do that. Lucas is writing in the dark while Aiden approaches the door complaining of being hungry, so wanting to do everything he can for his family, he improvises a trap to catch more animals, is drawn to the sound of a branch breaking and runs into with another man who is hunting and who has made a gruesome discovery: the skinned and mangled part of a body that Terry Lucas, Frank's drug dealer, can't help but shudder at.
Terrible considering what he could have done that, especially with what's been happening at home. Julia investigates Lucas's desk and discovers how she knew so much about the creature and how to set traps with books on each topic. Yes, take advantage of the local library. Children can learn all kinds of things, how to catch animals and also about supernatural things. she goes all out, showing the sketchbook full of disturbing, blood-filled drawings to the director and trying to plead her case that all of this means the boy must be being abused. The director cools down a little, but agrees that it is so. disturbing and we learn another worrying side of the small town the beginning shrugs well at least it's still here many students are homeschooled the real reason is their parents are cooking drugs they actually use some of the kids to move products or it could be because they are worried that someone will smell the drugs on their clothes, so leave them at home, making them even more disadvantaged by not receiving a real education.
Wow, it's a mess around here in a small town in Oregon, beautiful, although outside he runs into Warren telling him. Paul over the body and he tells her, apparently they found a body part in the woods. The writing problems are: what do you mean? Some of it, you know, the other half was found in his meth lab. That guy received the Torah, but as Paul suggests, he's probably just a bear or a cougar or something, I mean, what else could he be? It is certainly not a supernatural mythological creature. That would be crazy. Lucas visits his brother where Frank has been telling him some disturbing things like that God is dead as he hears him writhe and moan. the shadows behind the loving older brother, reminds him what mom told him, they were born under a lucky star, he brought him a gift and starts devouring them, but then Aiden starts coughing and making painful noises, followed by a black liquid that seeps from his eyes and mouth, wow, you can see that no matter how hard he tries, there is no way to stop him from transforming, of course, Lucas is not willing to give up hope, but an autopsy is performed on the body and the Technician is worried because it can't be seen. like any type of animal attack you've ever seen, but what's even more worrying is that the teeth marks appear to be human paws, you can only laugh in disbelief, but the guy knows what he saw, as hard as it is to Believe it or not, you should always have that. skeptical character, you know, and I guess it would be ridiculous if as soon as he saw the body he said when to close the case after the conversation with Julia, the director decides, after all, to pay a visit to the Warren Homestead like before it was opened the door. and as soon as he enters, she is bombarded with a powerful belt, reaching the extra closed door screaming for Frank not to answer, so she pushes forward and opens the door, entering the darkness where the smell is even more overwhelming.
He finds Aiden sitting there watching. everything innocent except the creepy dark black veins that now run all over his body. Frank appears and throws her away as he sees her chest glowing as if she were on fire. He remembers the ember stuff at the beginning. Yes, they must come from the source of the creature's power. glowing heart, he brutally attacks her by biting her finger before going straight for her face and now that Frank has had his first taste of human flesh, he begins his complete metamorphosis, his limbs snapping back and stretching and elongating, a black mass. begins to come out of his mouth throwing frank's human body like a shell meanwhile paul and the boys investigate the mine where fortunately they have warren along with them who knows what is happening they come to the bags and he explains to them that they are protections but For what he doesn't know they find a piece of antler, Paul assumes it's a dollar, but Warren doesn't believe it, so it's like nothing he's ever seen before.
These signs are enough to warn them not to proceed further. Paul's radio plays, but he only has bad reception. Hearing something about a missing person, Lucas walks home alone along the commercial roads until he hears Frank's distinctive screech coming from the woods and begins to follow him, but runs into the red-haired bully boy who is here to get revenge, not this time. There is no one around to help you. but that's not entirely true as a figure appears in the trees as Frank jumps down and rips the boy apart. Luke still hears his cries of pain as he runs away, but it's also important that he didn't try to hurt Lucas.
There are still some. part of his father there, even if he was a jerk before, maybe the change was good for him, at least he won't hurt his family now that he has become a monster, follow Aiden's whereabouts after they escaped, he is currently unknown in At home, Lucas is horrified to see the door wide open in the room, a streak of blood follows on the floor coming out of the window, but yeah, again, I still don't know what happened to help that The impact of what is happening is finally beginning to come to the surface.
With Ellen's husband having filed a missing person's report on her, Julia is surprised to have seen her yesterday. They return to the house where Lucas is busy cleaning up all the evidence. Paul along with his assistant go through the house and finally agree with his sister that something is up. She's not here, but they decide to wait and get a court order before moving forward any further. The next day, the bully boy's mother has also declared him missing and Julia thinks everything must be related. Paul disappoints her because there isn't much more to them than them. she can do right now while they are still waiting for the court order, she won't let that stop her and she decides to return to the house alone, she doesn't even have to go inside when she discovers Ellen's car under a tarp out front. that's enough for the police to find Ellen's mutilated body in the house.
She also finds Frank's shell of her former human body and notes that it is burned and skinned as if something had come out of it. They assume that he must be frank and, based on his appearance, he is you know, he is most likely dead with no one else, it is up to the brothers to take care of Lucas and they take him to the hospital, the doctor informs him that he is dehydrated and malnourished but warns that things They go much further than that says he's a very damaged boy, there are signs of a legitimate psychiatric crisis here as well as clear abuse, but don't worry, he's got some good drugs to help him deal with some of that stuff, so there's the She asks what they're going to do with Him, and Paul already knows what Julia is thinking, but he puts his foot down by cruelly linking his own past to his troubled upbringing.
You can't blame him for our past. She loses it to Paul and mentions only a few examples of what her father did. She's so caught up with her own trauma that she doesn't consider that he might have gone through something similar. Paul mumbles you have no idea what he did to me, yeah he probably wasn't a good guy, it was a pizza and then we were informed exactly what happened. after the mine attack, dad is in his room not looking well, his son is banging on the door wanting to know what's going on, he is the one who installs the extra locks and tells the kids that he is sick ordering them that no matter what happens , don't open that. inevitably, Aiden becomes ill as well, which Lucas tells his father that he saw how much he has already changed, he grabs his son and drags him into the room with him, the beating begins soon after, causing Lucas to scream in anguish, yeah, that's a pretty nasty deal for a kid to get. see your family turn into monsters and there is nothing to do about it based on what we have seen, we have to assume that what turns you is being hurt by the windigo, it has to enter your bloodstream somehow and this leads to your unfortunate destiny of transformation, but it is actually in tasting human flesh that it is completed.
They detail more of this when the duo seek answers from Warren, show him Lucas's art, and are shocked to learn that he is not native and recover a folklore book. showing a page dedicated to the windigo, the name translates as a diabolical evil that devours humanity according to legend, during a harsh winter, a lost hunter was forced to cannibalism to survive after feasting on the meat, he turned crazy and transformed into an amorphous spirit that can take many forms, then he wandered through the forest in search of victims, but his hunger was never satisfied, that is a big problem regarding when to go to science when indulging in forbidden meat , the consequence is not only to become a monster but also to be consumed by hunger. that will never be satisfied paul stops him dismissing all this as just a myth warren mocking maybe to you but to us it's a warning the point seems to be here is to tie it back into that whole storytelling concept that julia was describing in the stories previous class.
This is how we preserve our cultures and traditions over time, but many, like those of the indigenous people, have been lost over the years, which also explains why they had never heard of a windigo before, such Maybe they don't watch as many horror movies as they could. It's also true. More details: It can only be killed once they've finished feasting, as this temporarily weakens it, but you still have to shut down its beating heart to eliminate it for good, at which point the spirit will look for a new host. gravely states that the ancestral spirits will never die, they were here long before us and will be here long after us, the problem is that now they are angry upon hearing that opening note, it is because humanity destroyed the earth that has produced this evil .
Spirit Paul receives a call about another body identified as that of the bully kids at the scene. He begs the guy to tell him it was a train or something that would make sense, but the guy says no, that kid got eaten in half. I don't. I don't know what to tell you, but he keeps trying to believe that there has to be a logical explanation for all of this, while Julie is in for the whole pig at this point, come on, what's up with the shell and where is Aiden? She asks to be taken to the hospital where they sign Lucas to walk hand in hand as a strange new de facto family unit again, he has nothing else right now, but hey, at least they care, don't let them escape the cracks of a broken society in your home, now is the time.
For Julia to answer some questions about another connection she shares with Lucas. Her father also died when she was asked how she just says he did it to himself. It wasn't long ago and she wasn't here when he passed away. She is confused hearing this question. Didn't you love your father? She doesn't respond, but her feelings are clear. She moved back to be with her brother. She grew up here and missed it. That's why she came back. She had nothing to do with her father. She tries to convince him. I understand that her father is dead, but Lucas knows better that he is not dead, that he was my sick and bad old father.
He now he is my new father. She knows that he is with Aiden, but she is worried that he does not understand what is happening and needs help from her older brother. help, he just has to feed him and he will have to love him hearing this from Julia, eh, what, and he knows that his father will come for him and take him to the mines to be with his brother just at the moment when the scream is hurt in somewhere nearby. giving him a shake and lucas knows dad is here dan calls paul thinking he sees something in the shed and paul flips the cherries speeding on his way there julia quickly grabs lucas but forgets his phone missing a call from his brother he peeks out window tells lucas to stay quiet dan sees some movement under a pile of clothes in a box and tells paul that he has found a boy about to say more the windigo's huge

antlers

gore him from behind paul appears shortly after and sees Paul heading towards the death shed Lucas takes the opportunity to run away just as Paul sees Aiden, his father returns with his

antlers

hitting him against the wall and the two boys run away.
Paul sinks into the wall listening carefully for any sound, there is hoarse breathing and the antlers pierce the walls impaling himself. He puts him through the shoulder, drags him forward andbackwards trying to release it and paul defends himself with a shovel until he frees himself. The creature, angry, punches the remaining wall, breaking it into pieces. Julia comes out and finds things strangely quiet for the moment. her brother is still alive but definitely injured she knows where they are going to the mines he tells her weekly not to go she is adamant that he will go muttering well you won't leave without me she comes to mind shuddering as she hears the horns man growling Julia reaches the barriers knowing that she is approaching the lair of the creature that along with the powerful stench of death that lingers in the air painting the light around the darkness there are several pieces of blood and flesh scattered on the ground Lucas and Aiden Pop comes out hiding behind some equipment and the boy warns him to come back and catches a glimpse of Frank's long claws, who is in the middle of feeding and stops appearing to look at her eerily, with Frank's face still hanging on its own like a mask of disgusting skin to which he rises. his impressive stature and Julia opens fire, which only angers him even more, checking for a pulse, she stabs him unsuccessfully a couple of times and then really tries, jamming that thing right there, at least he's weakened at this point with both panting. out of exasperation, surprisingly it is Lucas who takes down his father with a stab in the back, but remembers that he still has to take his heart.
She struggles to turn the creature over and tears a hole through its chest. She reaches in and retrieves its glowing heart covered in a dark growth it's apparently hot to the touch, which makes sense with the whole fire thing and she drops the organ now just a dead dark mass on the ground though, like Warren mentioned, the spirit will immediately set off in search of a new host and leave. Straight at Aiden, he starts doing it madly. He squeals all over his chest covered in darkness and his eyes roll back in his head. Julian knows what needs to be done but Lucas intervenes still hoping that he's okay, he's just sick.
She gets honest with him. Telling him that it is too late and he wants Lucas to understand this, he finally accepts it, nodding slightly, Julia tells him to look away, the antlers begin to come out of his mouth and Julie hugs Aiden, asks for forgiveness and starts stabbing him. Lucas covers her ears to drown out the horrible screams, well, there you have it. she took care of that whole Windigo thing right now, as we see in our final scene, some time later, the brothers are still looking after lucas paul asking her what she's going to do with him and she feels like they have no choice but to keep him.
Paul expresses her concern. Like having a tiger cub, you know what he will become and it raises an even bigger question, can you kill something you love? She doesn't respond, but it's pretty obvious what she's thinking calling Lucas and wiping some of her mouth hmm, is some of that telltale black substance, I'm not sure, honestly the way they imply things work is that a windigo actually has to attack you or actually enter your bloodstream in some way for the transformation to occur. We never saw this happen with Lucas and also with Frank. attacked his children, but Paul seems somehow convinced that the child will turn into something dangerous, perhaps he means it in regards to all the trauma he has been through, which will be difficult for him to overcome and which could end up having lifelong effects.
As we have seen with Julia, it has been going on for decades, although we are not quite sure about the matter regarding Lucas Paul's fate, it is much clearer: he was clearly impaled by the antlers and suddenly has a violent coughing fit and spits out a black slimy substance also oozing from his eyes, we know for certain in his case that the change is inevitable and that the spirit of the windigo will certainly transfer to him as its next host. This could also be what he is implying with killing something you love and that one day she has to kill him or risk him becoming the beast.
It seems to me that the greatest idea they are going for here is that no matter what you never give up on someone you love, we saw that consistently with Lucas he never gave up on his brother. On the contrary, Julia left Paul, which weighed heavily on him for many years. I feel like at this point she's learned a lesson to never turn her back on him again, no matter what, and that's the whole intention of her character's journey. I won't leave even if things get tough. You know, there's one more character whose fate I'm not sure about.
In the end, the original. When to go. When I first saw this, I assumed they must have killed him at first, but then there's all you. I have to take his heart out, something Frank would have had no idea about. They never find another wind to go to the body in the mines, whether it is only a part of the antlers. He also seems to have come out of the mines as they find the other part. Terry in the woods I guess those wards didn't work so well after all, so what happened? They simply attacked them and fled somewhere.
Is it still out there eating other people or how long was that thing down there before Frank found it? Don't know. I know it's an admittedly small aspect of the story that I'm a little confused about how things play out here, he just attacks it, disappears, and then never mentions it again. It's weird, maybe I'll save it for antlers too, which brings us to the conclusion of this antlers
