See all the discussion we're having about our circumstances and what they mean for the right to repair, fair repair would open up a whole reuse market for customers and their electronic devices, the pressures, frustrations and limited access of queuing to talk with someone at the genius bar where they don't even serve

apple

tinis uh it will be removed from consumers okay so a refresher for those of you who missed it or forgot we knew we weren't going to get warranty service on our imac pro and We're not even talking about warranty service, we understood that we would have to pay, we wanted to pay, but at least we hoped that Apple could offer us a reasonable repair solution and I'm going to talk about expectations, I'm not talking like you know when.

Angry, do you even know who I am? They don't text me like I'm not talking about that kind of stuff. Apple actually avoided a similar PR crisis with Quinn Nelson at Snazzy Labs by simply assuming the cost of an Imac Pro and sending him a new one, but as he pointed out, I left the store with a new imac, but I wondered if they had done this by someone and our goal here was to have the normal customer experience so there have been some arguments in favor of Apple's position here of not fixing this and let's address the main ones before we continue, starting with Apple refusing to quote you a cost of repair because it will be higher than the cost of a new machine, you idiot and My answer to this is pretty simple: a Mac isn't special, it's not magic, it's just a computer, so a broken screen, maybe a motherboard fried and also maybe a faulty power supply does not turn a 5000 workstation into junk, we know this from our price breakdown.

Of the imac pro that Apple charges above market rates actually for their parts when purchasing bundled into a complete system, so even if I choose top of the line components, in the worst case the parts cost should be about 2100 US dollars and if they were willing to provide those parts we would expect to pay a couple hours of labor for a few hundred dollars or so, definitely not enough to write off the value of the chassis and CPU cooler , the RAM and the SSD, which are probably still working, are not that difficult to repair the reality is that we just make mistakes these things happen next is the liability argument what about Apple's liability for long-term functionality term of that machine?

Well, what's up with that? I mean, if you bring your computer, I don't. Be, let's say, a repair geek team, they will do the work, complete a broader check of the machine to see if there are any other problems and then, even then, guarantee their repairs in case they miss something. I mean the argument is really that Apple of all people can't do a thorough check on their own hardware and have so little faith in the training of their technicians that they can't guarantee a repair if that were true I don't think we should buy from them computers at all. this kind of stuff, industry standard stuff, not that complicated, getting back to the training part, although that was a tough nut to crack, so they actually accused us of making false claims about the availability of repair certification from Apple for the imac pro and other publications went that far.
As for contacting Apple Authorized Service Providers in the states, who confirmed they already had it, so here's what actually happened: It was available for at least some AASP at the time we made our video, however , it wasn't available for our local AASP, so I thought, oh, there's my chair, maybe this is like a Canada/US thing, but then I personally spoke to an American AASP tech who said, and this It was after our local store got certified, keep in mind I wasn't going to be able to get it. A couple more months, so something about the way Apple is implementing these programs on their Asps isn't quite right here, but for now we need to get back to addressing the issues we identified in our first video and fix this stupid workstation. professional work. which has been out of service for months, well that's pretty much the problem so getting back to the certifications, training and parts availability have improved dramatically since our first video and we were finally able to take our imac to an asp who assured us . who were able to get the job done in the end so thanks for watching guys if this video sucks you know what no I'm just kidding nothing is that easy you see while we managed to replace our screen for a reasonable price thanks to the rating . for what they call return pricing, where you send the original part to Apple for disposal, we actually void the warranty if we remove the stickers around our CPU socket, this one is here, so what that means is that because Because of that sticker we don't qualify for the return price on our logic board, which turns out to be a really bad thing because Apple wants 5,500 Canadian rupees plus tax for a new logic board that for some reason includes both the CPU and RAM, even though it is contrary to what many of our detractors thought they were plugged in and not soldered into this particular system, so it's about double Apple's price for this hardware when they originally sell you the system and that's what they charge AASPS , so if an authorized service provider does not return a defective one. part during the exchange, for whatever reason, they are charged the price of the spare part in what is a clear effort to prevent the spare parts from going out into the wild, which makes it quite difficult to get these things and, Interestingly, this is far from the only punitive measure that Apple seems willing to impose on its partners for talking to them.
We were surprised by the culture of fear that Apple cultivates among its authorized service providers; They are explicitly prevented from ordering replacement parts for that reason. to have them on hand, what that means is that they require a work order to be placed before the part is shipped, which creates massive delays of potentially weeks for something as simple as a damn ram change, which makes the asp looks bad in comparison. to Apple's own service centers, but that's Apple's policy to make matters worse, if an AASP tries to order a part that is not yet certified, Apple will send you a fine instead of the parts you ordered and all this It's because of the privilege. to have access to Apple's supply chain, and the best part is that anyone caught talking about this with anyone outside of Apple, for them, this is cause for severe retaliation, revocation of AASP status or certifications, fines or even possible legal action, just a handful of brave people.
Souls were willing to tell us their names or the names of the stores they ran or worked for and of course we will keep all that information private to protect them in comparison. Samsung has a web portal where you can log in. and order any phone replacement part you could want, so with that kind of marking on a label, the aasp option was obviously available, it really would have been better to order a new imac pro, but another one of you guardian angels who will also do it. Not being named for legal reasons took a step forward now that we're getting to the point where the solutions we're working on wouldn't be available to Joe Average, but even though it was a lot of work, we really wanted to know how deep it goes. down this rabbit hole, so it ended up being a case where I know a guy who knows a guy who knows another guy, so given the amount of money that was being exchanged, they sketched me out to the max, but after a series of underground deals like almost literally, street deals, our contact managed to get us this new imac pro logic board complete with CPU and ram for 2000 US dollars and here's the trick if our contact gets deghostified because at this point it has become dark if our contact returns. again and you can get us exchange prices that could actually be as low as zero dollars so great I have a calculator so let's do some quick math for you guys our lowest cost screen and power supply replacement It was about 1400.
US dollars including labor and shipping, thanks to the return price, worst case scenario we can add another two thousand dollars on top of that for the logic board and oh look at that 3400 dollars Americans, how much does an imac pro cost again? Sorry haters it seems. Like you're wrong, I guess if it weren't for Apple's anti-consumer anti-partner and possibly looking at what's going on with the right to repair in the states right now, the

illegal

policies, it would be possible to get the replacement parts for less than the retail price of a new unit now there is only one thing left, we still don't know if our Frankenstein machine works or not and I could ask Anthony to test it, but I think we all know what happened last time .
I can't believe it. that some people thought this was intended to mislead the audience because of how it was clearly a CSI style dramatic reenactment, I mean look at the sparks, we're not even good at special effects anyway, this video is already long enough and I think I have a better idea and some of you probably already know where I'm going with this. Hi Louis, I think I have a fun little project for us. Have you ever worked on an imac pro before we haven't stopped seeing it yet? I have a sneak peek and an offer for you.
The preview is that we will soon have a video with Wendell from Level One Tax Gaming on Linux. It's better than you think, unless you think it's perfect, in which case it's not better than you think, but don't worry. About that too twitter, look at Private Internet Access for VPN which does more or less what a VPN does: it encrypts your traffic and makes it harder to track you on the Internet. It's cool, check it out at the link in the video description, so thanks for watching, if you don't like this video you can hit that button, but if you liked it, hit like, subscribe and maybe consider checking out where to buy the stuff which we present in the link in the video description, particularly the ifixit stuff.
I'm not sure if we are recommending the imac pro at this time. There's also our merch store that has cool t-shirts like this one and our community forum that you should join.
