The Truth about Apple's Nano Etched Glass - (M4 iPad Pro)

Jun 04, 2024
In this year's M4 iPads, the thinnest ever made by Apple, Apple has two different types of

glass

. The 13-inch iPad we saw earlier has the usual shiny

glass

that we see on all previous iPhones and iPads. But if you're willing to spend a little more, Apple has a very special

nano

-textured screen in the 1TB and 2TB versions. As I bought in this 11 inch. I love glass and enjoy exploring all of its complex properties. This video is sponsored by Chime, but we'll talk about it later. At first glance, this is crazy. Not only is it a completely different visual experience, but the texture is much smoother than regular glossy glass.

My fingers glide smoothly over the smooth surface like a ship adrift on calm seas before latching onto the shiny frame. The texture is excellent, but visually, with the matte finish, all the colors seem to stand out a little less. It's a shame because it feels phenomenal to the touch. Inside the box we find an Apple polishing cloth. We'll take it down soon. There's also the same 20W charging cable and charger that we saw with the larger one. Also, keep in mind that this smaller 11-inch iPad Pro is actually 0.2mm thicker than the 13-inch one. It's still ridiculously thin, but we'll get to that later.

More Interesting Facts About,

the truth about apple s nano etched glass m4 ipad pro...

We know

nano

-textured glass looks and feels different, but does it scratch and damage differently? Establishing the Mohs hardness scale, we see something new at level three. Instead of nothing happening like regular glass, this time we see nano-textured glass grind my tool like ribeye cheese, a sander grinds nails, sandpaper grinds wood, or like work destroys the will to live . And when we get to level four, it looks like it's damaging the screen. This is scientifically impossible because we know that glass is level five or six and this Mohs tool is level four. Using an Apple cloth removes level three copper shavings, but does not remove permanent level four marks.

They do not disappear even with alcohol. I believe that, just as sandpaper wears away when working with wood, these microscopic mountains have been knocked down by my tool, or the tool has become permanently embedded in the nanotexture through material transfer. Either way, the damage has already been done and that damage is permanent. To see what other elements have the same effect on this technology, the keys leave very visible dust, but the Apple cloth cleans them 99%. The coin is also sanded with Apple sandpaper, but can also be wiped clean. The steel screw leaves a permanent mark on the glass that cannot be erased.

An open blade is fine, and a JerryRig knife with a stainless steel blade also leaves permanent marks on glass. Please note that these items would not damage or leave marks on the normal glossy glass that Apple usually uses. Damage occurs only in nano-textured glass. This is worth remembering: keep metal objects away from the nanotexture if you want to retain its original appearance. Apple said we only use an Apple cloth to clean these screens. She was doing a good job up to that point. It appears to be made of normal soft microfiber fabric. The only difference between this and a regular microfiber cloth is that this one is double-layered and costs $19.
If I use a regular microfiber cloth that costs a few cents, nothing happens to the screen. And again, if I use a slightly better quality dbrand cloth, there is no damage. There are no marks or marks from the blue store towel or even, and I'm sure someone passed out at the Genius Bar, from the paper towel. Aside from leaving behind a little more dust than generic microfiber, almost any cloth will work for the iPad, as long as it's not steel wool. Which, now that I mention it, sounds fun. At this point I usually scratch the frame to see what material it is made of, but since we have already checked the 13-inch ones, I am sure they are exactly the same.
But old habits die hard. The left side, with a plastic pen slot and volume buttons, has a microphone opening near the bottom. I would suggest that Apple remove all center microphones, but that's just me. This upper hole for the microphone, at the most sensitive point of the structure, became one of the failure points of the 13-inch iPad. We'll see if they pursue the 11-inch in a moment. The long, empty right side of the iPad M4 Pro is also made of metal and doesn't seem to be compromised by the microphone holes. The bottom has two more speakers and a USB-C port.
The back of the iPad M4 has a 12-megapixel camera, a 3D LiDAR scanner, and a four-LED dual-tone flash. Rest in peace wide angle camera. And for discounting five of my wheelchairs for $1,000. One thing that is the same between the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro is the Tandem OLED.
They have the same 264 pixels per inch and 120 Hz refresh rate, this one is a little smaller and in this model it has nano-

etched

glass. Both are surprisingly fire resistant. Even after 30 seconds there is no damage. As we know, glass is glass, but while I don't think nano-

etched

glass improves the overall structure, I don't think it weakens it either. The 11-inch iPad Pro is 0.2mm thicker, and during the bending test, every fraction of a millimeter helps. When I bend over from behind, it bends a little and the glass takes the skin off my fingers. That's fair enough, some technologies are fighting back.
And when I bend in front, I also bend a lot, but there is no harm. Apple has fixed and fixed the folding of the M4 ultra-thin iPad Pro. Thumbs up for that. Even the vertical curve appears to be stronger than the 13-inch, and both the first and second curves leave the tablet slightly deformed but still intact. Only in the third corner does the microphone come back to haunt us. My hands were on the top half of the tablet, so that could be a factor, but the matte nano-textured glass was broken throughout the device. And a quick little curve at the bottom gets the job done.
As we begin an autopsy of the remains to determine the cause of death... It's a mystery. We can see the exact location of the Apple center support on top of the motherboard. We have two cracks on each side of that support. Which, and we'll have to check again, I think mirrors exactly how the larger 13-inch iPad Pro also broke. When we whip out the Tandem OLED like a can of sardines, we get a first look at the large dual batteries giving us a total of 8,160mAh and 31.29Wh. I will remove the 12 Phillips screws to access the center support.
It's amazing that this thin, tiny piece of metal can prevent an iPad from breaking in half. A small piece of hardware that does its job surprisingly well. By removing the copper shield from the motherboard, we get a second look at the Apple M4 chip. Both iPad Pros look very similar inside. They have different speaker designs and a smaller battery, but when we look back, if we look behind my photorealistic rendering of the Savannah, we can see that both iPads are cracked in the same places. The crack runs from the charging slot to the right side of the keyboard port, around the right side of the Apple logo, and to the microphone hole at the top.
If Apple removed that microphone hole and added a vertical stand, I'd be out of a job. So I ask you to forget everything I said. And thank you very much for watching. See you.
