Off Road And Overlanding Gear You NEED

Mar 22, 2024
What's happening? Everyone, welcome back to the channel. My name is Josh. This is

overlanding

now and today what I want to talk about are the five essential things every Overlander

need

s right now whether you're new to

overlanding

or have already done it. I've been doing this for a while. This list is what I came up with, which are the most important items you will

need

before starting your first journey or while doing your land build if you are new. to get into the channel hit the subscribe button and if you've been here for a while I'd love to hear your feedback on the top five things you have in your

gear

when you go on a trip so in this video we're going to discuss those items .
off road and overlanding gear you need
I'm going to go over the ones I like and the ones I never leave home without and then I'll put links to everything I have in the video in the description, so if you like them, feel free to do so. buy them if not don't buy them here we go okay the first thing I want to talk about in the top five landing essentials is your platform now there is a lot of speculation about your platform and what you need. what you should have and everyone has their own opinions and everyone's opinions are great but the reality is everyone's situation is different so the most important thing you need is a capable off

road

vehicle it doesn't have to what to be the most expensive.

More Interesting Facts About,

off road and overlanding gear you need...

It doesn't have to be the newest, it doesn't have to be the baddest beast on the block, but what you need is a capable platform that can get you from point a to point b with as little mechanical disruption as possible now that platform in my opinion, It should have a decent amount of space, you don't need the world's largest lifted truck to get over the landing. Everyone knows it and we covered it in the last video that I will link in one of these corners and your team just needs to be capable, there are so many teams on the market today that are absolutely capable in their original form behind me is our team Completely original in terms of suspension, many other modifications have now been made that I consider to be much more important than a lift or any type of suspension component.

I have talked in the past about what lift to get and whether they are important and let's get a lift. We're going to make those modifications, but what was important to us was just a capable off-

road

vehicle, something with good clearance, good four-wheel drive, a front and rear locker probably not a bad idea, but a rear locker is not absolutely necessary. I would say it is more necessary than having both and not all vehicles come with front and rear lockers now our jeep is the rubicon it is a 2020 so it comes with a front and rear locker and a stabilizer bar disconnect it is an automatic disconnect just you press a button and it disconnects it's not an old school version where you had to go out and disconnect the sway bar yourself, but even if you have to disconnect it yourself, it's not a big deal, but those are the elements that are important Now, not everyone will have all of those components, like I said, that's totally fine, but is your vehicle capable of tackling the tr terrain you want to tackle, those are the questions you need to ask yourself;

However, you are sure that it is completely up to you, but you only have something that is capable of taking you from one point to another. point b with minimal mechanical interruptions now we've covered number one and obviously that's your team. The second thing I want to talk about is the recovery team. Now recovery

gear

is probably the first, if not the second, most important thing you need in your kit. In the event that something happens now, if you are traveling with a group of people, you can obviously spread out that recovery kit where one person has your lift jack, another has your max tracks or your traction boards and everyone is carrying a different component, but if you travel alone like we do most of the time, we have to have all of these things on board at all times, so outside of recovery equipment there are several pieces of this recovery equipment right, it's not just one thing.
Maybe hundreds of components that you can add to your recovery toolkit in case something happens, but what I want to talk to you about today is the essentials, what you need and what every computer should have, so the first thing you should have. What I want to talk about is a toe strap, this toe strap I've had for about 10 years and it's just a huge, strong, tried and true old tow strap, now your toe strap The toe can obviously be used for a variety of different things, mainly for winching. yourself pulling the winch around a tree pulling the winch other people pulling it out pulling things out but the toe strap is like the basic component that I would say you need now to get to or get into the toe strap , you will need a winch Now we use the smittybilt mark it.
In the basics, what do I need because I can return it, a recovery tool kit, I mean, a huge box because there are so many different devices and there are so many things you can have, but the basic thing is a toe strap. It is absolutely essential The second thing that is absolutely essential in my opinion is the tire patch kit. Again, this tire patch kit has never been opened. I opened it up to look at it but I never had to use it and the good thing is that you probably don't do it that often, but at that time when you do, let's say you're on the road and you put on the spare tire because you got a hole in it. , you cut a rock and made a hole in the tire.
Now you have four left and you only have tires, you have another hole, you will have to try to repair it because there are no spare parts, so a tire patch kit is absolutely essential and I wouldn't leave home without it, ever. Do we always have one? I haven't had to use it yet, but I'm not saying don't. Another super simple item but with many different uses. Toe or ties. Ratchet straps. You have ratchet straps on your vehicles. I have a ratchet. straps on each of my vehicles every day, not because I think I'll need them, but because I can always use a ratchet strap, whether we're buying a Christmas tree and tying it to the roof of my Jeep or we're hauling lumber from the store and we're in the jeep or a hundred different reasons why you could use a ratchet strap for a ratchet strap to carry them in your vehicle at all times, one of the other really important items that I feel is extremely imperative to have on your platform at all times traction boards traction boards once again.
I never had to use them once and I made my own little spare tire holder and I'll put that link in the video and it has my shovel if you can see it, it has a holder that goes to my spare tire and I just put velcro on it and tied the shovel to traction boards. I screwed the traction boards into the bracket and this is on my spare tire. I've never had to use them even once, which is fine, but we travel alone and we have to be prepared, so in terms of recovery equipment, I consider one of the most essential items now the last thing I would say is the bungee.
Ropes We have bungee cords once again in our vehicles at all times, regardless of whether we are going to the store to pick up groceries or if I am going on a 5,000 mile trip across the country, I always have bungee cords in my vehicle because they are multi-purpose and you can use them for almost anything, from a recovery standpoint, if you have a winch, a tow strap, a tire patch kit, ratchet straps, bungee cords, a traction board and a shovel, that's it. It can literally complete your entire recovery kit for now. Once you start expanding and encounter more situations, there may be something you want to change, but that's the basics for the recovery team.
Okay, third on the list, which honestly should be number one on your list, but now they're not so glamorous first aid kits. I have two of them, these first eight kits are from Survival Wear and I think they cost about a hundred dollars. They come with everything you need for a basic first aid kit. You could definitely expand on this if that's something you want. I'm going to link this in the description below because I work with survival clothing where I bought them and they didn't give them to me for free, but I love their products so I'll put their link in the description if you want. to go check them out if you need a new first aid kit, but the first eight kits are an absolute must and extremely important on your trip.
We have two. I keep one in the boat and one in the jeep. These are on the boat or in the jeep. I never leave home without it and that's because you never know what you and my team are going to get into. I want that thing to be practically equipped all the time, but I don't want to drive around with a tent. I don't want to drive with 15 gallons of water and extra fuel because that's unnecessary for me, but that first aid kit is with us all the time and should be with you all the time and when you're on the road.
If something were to happen and you couldn't get medical attention for 75,80,100 miles and maybe 50 of those miles were dirt, you would need to at least be able to evaluate a wound or injury and treat it as best as possible. until you can get professional help so make a first aid kit part of your first five building blocks instead of putting building blocks number four on the list for us and these are in no particular order so Don't think of this as the end of the list. of importance, um, but number four on the list is a place to sleep.
Now many people will say that the place to sleep is a tent on the roof. Some people have a teardrop shaped trailer. Some people camp on the ground. Some people sleep in hammocks. Some people sleep completely outside. exposed to the elements, whatever you do, you just need to make sure you have a place to sleep. We use a Smittybilt Overlander roof top tent and there are a couple of reasons why we bought that tent. The first reason why the price is 980 is still expensive. for a tent, I don't care what they say about its construction or durability, the temporary market on rooftops is bordering on extortion, but that is literally a topic for another day, sitting around a campfire talking about conspiracies, but today the smittybilt Overlander tent is the reason I got it was because of its price and Smittybilt has a great reputation for producing good products and we love that tent.
Now the only problem I see with our tent and I'm just giving advice on this specific tent because it's the only one I really have experience with is about nine and a half to ten inches tall from the top of the jeep and it's a wind sail. and that's the benefit of going with a rigid tent, but rigid tents are three, four, five and six. times the price of a soft shell tent now, if you don't like rooftop tents that's totally cool, you can sleep on the ground in a tent, there are hundreds and hundreds of tents really reliable now if you are going to sleep in a submarine. -Zero or sub-zero temperatures.
I wouldn't buy a cheap tent. I would spend the money on an expensive tent that can adequately insulate you because coming from an experience of 17 degree weather and camping in a tent is cold, I don't care how many blankets. It's very cold so no matter what kind of tents you have or what you use to sleep in, some people even sleep in their jeep which is also awesome because you don't have to buy any additional equipment so keep that in mind , you just need a place to sleep, which is one of the essential elements for landing, a place to sleep, how you choose to do it is completely up to you.
Number five of the five beginner landing essentials is food and water storage. Now you will notice that I am not going to say anything about cooking because cooking is not really something essential I like to cook I prefer to cook I enjoy it I do it at home I do it on the road so cooking for us is a big part of but that experience is not absolutely necessary, you can get any type of food you want, that's just sustenance while you're on the road, some people are extremely uncompromising and don't eat regular meals, but some people like me like to cook so that cooking is not an essential food It's not essential, but cooking it and how you cook it is not, it's how you transport that food and how you transport that water across the country or wherever you go that's important to us.
This box is a little heavy for us. All we use to store food is where are those sticky sterilization bags? They fit very well in our jeep, so we havethat hook pallet rack on the back and I can stack two of these in there perfectly. my goal is zero in the middle and then a water container in the middle that keeps everything comfortable and works perfectly, but just a simple box to store your food, something that is easy to access, something that is not extremely expensive, there are many boxes you can spend. a lot of money or you can go cheap and it works perfectly.
We have five. I'll put the link in the description. We have like five times 23. And I literally use the five every time they have it. It's not broken, so I would say for the food component and how to travel with it, that's what we use now. Water is a little different because it's heavy and it takes up a lot of space, so when you're packing your gear it's already weighing more and more, well the size of your family or the size of your group is what dictates how much You need water and I drink a lot of water, I try to drink at least a gallon of water every day, I don't always succeed, but I try.
I know if we're going to be off the road for seven days, I need at least seven gallons for myself, that's just drinking, okay, that's not cooking, that's not. cleaning that's not showering that's not coffee so for us we have to carry a lot of water and I choose to carry as much water as I can without getting in the way of everything or ruining our situation with the way we pack so first thing I would say seven gallon Aquatainer . Now I only carry one of these. I have seven gallons and five gallons. I'll put this link in the description.
It is a simple design, it is square and you can store it super. Simple, it's seven gallons, okay, so if we're doing the math, it's seven gallons, that's all I need for a week. Now I also carry my trail racks. The mounting system is two of these and these are approximately two gallons a piece. It's two gallons, so you have two gallons here and I carry two of these, so it's four gallons, four plus seven, it's 11 gallons. I'll put the link to the rotopax. I'm sure you all know where to get rotopax and then the latest thing I take it and this is kind of a new addition.
I'll put a link here to the video I made about it because the water port is really incredible. This is a pressurized water system and it has a little place here if I can see that you basically hook it up to your compressor and it pumps it up and fills it up. The most you're supposed to fill is 50 psi, but that takes 3.8 gallons, so we have seven and four, which is 11 plus 3.8. We'll call it four, it's 15 gallons of water that we carry at all times. As you travel, your water load becomes lighter and lighter, so you know your weight is changing, but that's just part of the learning. your team and you understand well, I'm starting the day with 15 gallons of water and in three days I'll probably have seven or six, so you know, trying to manage that load is something that every person has to do and kind.
They have to figure it out on their own, but from water, drinking water, cooking water, cleaning water, that's what we carry and I think it's absolutely essential for your land platform, so that's what meets the top five essentials for your land platform. now let's go over them again your rig itself doesn't have to be the biggest best beast on the market you need your sleeping place you need your water storage you need your recovery gear and last but not least you need your first aid kit I'm going to link all the descriptions. Sorry, it doesn't make sense.
I'm going to link all of these things in the description below so you can check them out and if it's something that you want to buy something cool when you buy it on Amazon, we get a small, I mean, a small commission for that and it helps the channel, we help me continue doing this, like I said, I will never ask you for money, but if you want to buy something from one of our links it's a way to help us because things are expensive, but whatever, it's not your problem, that's mine, so If you liked today's video, please do me a favor, like the video if you haven't subscribed. channel hit the subscribe button so you can join us on the adventures, get more information like this and if there's anything I missed or something you think I overlooked or didn't mention enough, leave it in the comments because it helps me understand what they want to watch, but most importantly it tells YouTube that people are watching the video, so they'll watch them later.
