Custom Pegboard Wrench Organizer

Mar 09, 2024
Hi, welcome back to Rob's Garage Woodworking, today I'm making another one of these

custom

pegboard

key holders, so they are actually very simple to make. Use L brackets, just screw them in, screw them in and glue them in then use them. screws and then you can put the

wrench

es on the screws. You can use other things too but this is my preferred method and I'm making a larger one because I have a different set of keys so I need more space and I'm going to need to make a larger key holder so that's what I'm doing. doing now, so I just have a knotty pine shelf here and what I did was I measured from the top to the center line where the screws are going to go, uh. an inch and three quarters because this is a large set, so when this sits here and hangs from the screw, there should be enough room from the top that you can hang it easily without tipping it over or causing any problems.

The edge up here from the edge of the first key is one inch and then what I'm doing is I'm seeing that I'm placing the key. I have another board underneath so that everything is straight so that no. Don't fall out, I line it up, I mark it, line up the next one, mark it, line up the next one, mark it, so you want to leave a little bit of space between each one and I'm just going to look at these and It'll work well enough just looking at it to line them all up. , take the next key, bring it closer, give it a little bit of space now, as the keys get bigger, the spaces between them get a little bit bigger and then you mark it. bring the next one this way, this is easier than using foam, not only is it easier to make, but it is also easier to get the tools closer together, so it is more dense and takes up less space, so now we are going to use a punch or punch and we're just going to mark where the intersecting lines are and we're going to try to do this so that you have a nice clean start so that the keys don't come off up and down, so to start this on the line, center it and give it a little tap and then started drilling it, so next we're just going to drill it, just use a small drill bit. and then since you're putting this all in one line, you can split the wood and just split it, break the whole piece, so pre-drill it so there's not too much pressure, so now we're going to cut some corners and I.

More Interesting Facts About,

custom pegboard wrench organizer...

I've placed my stop block here just so I can repeat all the cuts and get the same result, so we've got our backs. Now we will make a top for them. The top will be two and a half inches wide. and it's going to be another two inches longer than this because it's quite large, so I'm just trying to make the dimensions look decent, and that's going to be right above this, so about two and a half inches, okay? So I set my fence on the table saw at two and a half inches. Now I'm going to break these boards, so now I'm going to cut the corners off of these and once again put in my stop block. and I cut the corners, I just turn the board over and that way it saves you some time, so I set up my router, I have a chamfer bit, it's a 45 degree angle and then I have support on the top of this , so I don't need a fence behind it and I'm going to do this from the top and the bottom with the sides to the bottom and then the top of the back and the top of the back so you can flip it into place. so we're going to do all that with these here, so now I'm going to sand them.

I'm going to sand the fronts, the bottoms like the edges, but not the back, and sand all the writing, so I've pre-drilled them for every set of keys I have, sized them and pre-drilled them, I've marked and pre-drilled and I have written on the back what this metric gear

wrench

is for, the metric gear wrench is fine for So I know what they are spaced for so I'm going to sand them real quick so before I put the shelf I put it on a

pegboard

here, on a pegboard that I have, I'm going to Mark where I'm going to put the square bend screw hooks, so I'm going to center this and then one in the center because it's a big shelf, like this We are going to place three hooks and we are going to mark where we are going to place the square curvature screw hooks and they have to fit into the holes.

Okay, now what I'm going to do is transfer all the marks, so I line up all of these together and let's go. to use your square, keep it nice and straight, we're going to transfer all the markings so they're even, so now what we're going to do is glue it down and nail it, let's run. a drop of glue here and then line this up make sure the chamfer is on top and put this in and use our spacer and it's just a touch bigger than three quarters on each side okay line everything up and then we're not going to put any nails where those marks are because that's where you're going to put the screws in properly, so I'm going to use one to a quarter inch nails, so I'm going to do the rest of these.
If you have glue, squeeze it out, get rid of it now, it's okay because it has quite a bit of weight even though it's nailed and screwed. I'm going to add three screws and use a countersink bit. use some number eight robertson screws okay here is one of my other finishing racks this is also a key rack and this is the screw hook that I have so what I did was I ran the chamfer. I did less of a chamfer on this one than I did on the other ones and I just put them right in the center between the chamfer and the bottom and they set well, so I'm going to use the same type of spacing, so now where my marks are, let's put these.
Call them square bend screw hooks and I bought these at home hardware. I had other ones from Home Depot but they weren't the right size so I found these at home hardware and that's perfect even if they were a little shorter. It would be nice for me but anyway I'm going to use these, they say they're size 108 so whatever I'm going to drill a 7 16 hole oh sorry 7 60 quarter and a drill and center . that fits later, so now let's dye this. I am using minwax wood finishing stain. This is the first American color. I use some rubber gloves for this, that way it keeps the stain off your fingers, and sometimes I use a foam brush too. just to make things quicker, so anyway we're going to give it a good coat of stain here, then I'm going to wipe it off with a shop cloth and then I'm going to wipe off the excess with a blue shop cloth and just to even out. the stain goes to excess, it also helps stabilize the color anyway, this is how I finish it and clean the surface, so now I have the shelves and some pieces of wood spacers underneath and a folding table.
I do all my varnish and stuff so I'm going to use uh this one is called we're going to get the English side wood shield quick dry clear coat it's a polyurethane and this is an interior gloss and it says it's bowling alley resistant. , so I'm going to just use a bristle brush for this and you have to do a virus clean after this, so I'm going to cover the back and the front and I'm going to cover the back because I don't want the wood to work because it's a larger piece of wood and you know it can warp so I'm going to give it a full coat on the back.
I also recommend using these disposable rubber or plastic gloves to prevent your hands from getting covered. the finish or the varsal when you're cleaning it's fine so for these I stained them first and then varnished them and after varnishing it I let it dry for 24 hours and used a 220 grit sandpaper and then polished it. and you just clean it and polish it and then I put another coat of varnish on it. You usually have to apply two or four before you get it the way you like it, but like it will be in the store. I'm only going to do two coats so now I'm going to sand it again and then polish it and I'll be ready to put the keys on so I'm just going to give it a light sanding, nothing major just to hit. get the rough spots out, just clean it, get all the chamfers and everything's fine, so I'm just going to use some shop towels, nothing major, just clean it, clean it first and then try to polish it and the more you polish it. it looks brighter, it brings back that shine, so once again, since it's the store, I'm not going to go too crazy, I'm not being too picky, but I want it to look reasonably good, yeah, okay, now I have different size screws, they are all number eight, starting in the middle and then going down to a quarter and an inch and what I'm doing is making sure that that's enough so it doesn't go all the way down the back. of the wood, but just enough so that the head of this sticks out above that so it can hang like that, so I put it in my drill and put my screw in so that when I hang that.
It's just going to hang really well, so I'm going to do each one and make sure they're all spaced out nicely. As the wrenches get smaller, I'll have to move up to the next screw size, so here are all of our wrenches. They are there, they are all spaced like they are supposed to have all the screws in and the last pair I had to use number six because they are too small now now we have to put in the square curve screw hooks which are these ones here and they look a little funky like this and then they go on the back, so I pre-drilled holes back here, so I'll put these guys.
I'm going to use a pair of pliers and keep turning them. until they go into all the holes roughly, so these should line up, so you push them in like this and then you just lower them down, okay, and that's too much, so I'm going to give them a little twist back one turn, there you go, to get it nice and flush, it's not very tight, but it's close. In fact, I can put a shim in if I need to. You can put a little wedge behind it just to keep it super tight if not. It didn't work perfectly, no big deal, so now we're going to hang up the keys, so here's the finished product.
Like I said, I made four of these so this one because these wrenches are so big they don't actually fit properly in my tool cabinets and I actually like hanging them because they're easy to reach and if you have your kids with you or whatever you can say, go find me, you know, the one-eighth inch one. uh combination wrench, so these because they're offset, so the angled heads here, if you hang them like this, they can stick out a little bit, so if you turn them the other way, they stick in and they're more flush against the wall so they don't get caught, so if you put something under them, they won't get caught.
The smaller ones are not as bad as the larger ones, but they can stand out. a wall like that has to be, you know, about an inch and a half away from the wall at the base, which isn't a big deal, and you could put different hooks on it, like you could use those curved square hooks on this as well. You can get smaller ones and you can place them at an angle that matches the angle your head is offset or like I said you can turn it around anyway, that's it, just another option for storing your keys.
You know you can do a There are a variety of different things with them, but this is one of my favorite ways to do it right anyway, thanks for watching.
