And I particularly want to capture the shadow of the wave here. you see the way the wave goes down and catches the light towards the end of the wave. I want to focus particularly on that, so let's have some fun with this, see what we can do with this now, I'll tell you. what colors do I have here, okay, let me fix my yellow colored nipples because it moves a little bit on my canvas, it happens when the paint is a little bit oily, um on my palette, more like it's a paper palette, okay, the Colors I have are titanium. white a little bit burnt number uh cerulean blue phthalo blue Naples yellow magenta and black I think in a nice simple palette uh maybe we could if we wanted to add a little touch of crimson to this also just a touch of crimson I think and that's it , let's take a big brush, a nice big brush, this is pretty worn out, this is starting to get difficult now that we're starting to get used to it and there's not much life left in this, I don't think so, let's start with the sky that I've masked and glued with tape here, actually, I need to do a quick little sketch of my wave, let's start with the sand, where the sand intersects here and goes down and intersects like this, um, the whole shape.

The splashes appear like this and then the wave itself and it goes up slightly, let's make it a little bit interesting and that's it, okay, let's get some titanium white, a nice dark sky, yeah, let's get some phthalo blue and I'm going to take a a touch of thinner and this with the corner of my brush just to dilute a little bit, okay, a little bit, there we go phthalo blue, a little bit of titanium white and I'm going to keep a little bit of greenish tone in this, so a little bit of cerulean blue. also give it a good mix let's take a look at this now okay I'm going to stick with it so my canvas is almost dry I left it for about an hour or so it's pretty dry okay I'll prime this a time.
how to paint a seascape in oils paintingtutorial seascapepainting
Put that in there like this and the paint that really moved beautifully on this canvas because it's primed makes a big difference a little coat of primer just look at how easily it moves there now very well and hopefully it stays nice and dry okay ? I'm going to add a little more white to lighten it up a little bit. I'm going to use my spatula too. Okay, just to get some real texture on this sky. Let's go with a little bit of phthalo blue and a little bit of dark magenta. As it comes down, now I want to add a touch of black as well because it's a very rich dark color, like a blueish gray type, okay, maybe it's a little bit better, a little bit of magenta in there just to keep it nice and warm, let's go down to the horizon line with that just on the other side, smoothing all these colors together very nicely, now look, smoothing them together from left to right, from left to right, let's take a little bit more cerulean blue, a little bit of white pop that is there and you can really have some fun with the colors in this now too, okay you can add your own colors, add a little pink if you want and that would be lovely, also a little pink would be nice.
I'm going to keep it. It's nice and simple, okay, for the purpose of this video, just nice and simple, soften that now I want to go nice and dark in this corner here yeah, I'm going to take a little bit of phthalo blue, a little bit of black and a little magenta, nice and dark and That will make a beautiful contrast with the ocean, I think it will soften that outwards, it will look like this. I hope you can see this volcano on camera. Let me sit down and take a quick look. Okay, yeah, that's not bad.
That's not bad. I want to darken again I think it has to be very very dark in that corner down there, okay, a lot of black and a lot of phthalo blue, soften it up and smooth it up, there we go now I'm thinking about a spatula, what do you think I have? this need to take my spatula for some strange reason, let's just pick it up and see what happens, just grab a little bit of white and a little bit of cerulean blue and I'm just going to suggest a little bit of movement in the sky, okay, because it's just It looks pretty bland, doesn't it?
We suggest a little movement in the sky up there. Okay, creating a nice little cloud once you put the paint on and have the outside shape. Okay, then it's a matter of just scraping the knife. and soften the colors in a similar thought, so look, have a little fun with this, okay, there's one, so I'm going to move on to more cerulean blue and a little bit of white again, making it a little more blue this time. come up here and just drag some clouds in the distance, okay, you can see kind of chunks of clouds appearing up there in the distance, right?
And it's really just about having fun with your spatula, okay, just dab dab dab look. Suppose that little piece of clothing appears here and there, now come on, you could even take a little bit of white if you want and just add a touch of white here and there further up in the sky, look, let's catch a little bit. of light here and there now let me sit down and take a look at this oh, that's not bad, I think next I should smooth it out with my soft brush, smooth it out gently upwards, remove some of those rough edges on the canvas, look there. we're just going to add a little bit of atmosphere to the sky, that's really all I want to do, grab some of those clouds and move them around, okay, no, I think that's okay, nice simple sky, let's peel off our masking tape and have a nice clean line.
I love doing that, it's very satisfying, isn't it ocean? Nice dark dark ocean. Well, I'm going to keep my brush the same and start with a nice dark color. A nice deep dark color. Let's get some phthalo blue. A little black. I want this. very very dark now it's very dark up there very little blue with black and a little bit of magenta just to keep it on the warm side so you understand what I mean let's go up and put a nice dark line right where they meet it's well, there we are. Come on, it doesn't have to be perfect, okay, don't try to make it perfect.
It's very difficult to get a perfect straight line like this, so if it moves a little or wobbles, don't worry about it at all, it's fine. Come down, you can see lightning starting, right? Let's get a little bit of white and a little bit of cerulean blue. I also want to give it a little touch of Naples yellow and it just adds that little touch of greenery to the color that you see, which brings it down. until we get to this line here and I want to soften it up, take a little bit more Naples yellow so we get a little bit lighter and soften it again.
I'm kind of jumping on the canvas, softening it, okay. All good, now I'm going to start moving to a smaller brush. We don't need this big brush anymore. I think we're going to use a smaller brush. We have a nice soft flare here. Okay, let me wet it and wipe it on my tissue. I always do this just to soften the bristles and let's start putting some nice dark tones in here. I'll get some little hints of waves breaking in the distance. Okay, blue and a little black. Okay, not just those two colors. too thick and I'm just going to go ahead and add a little touch of "see", I'm letting the brush move around you, see that leaning down hard and then standing up, etc., is just for create that little little bit of movement in the distance that's it and you'll see, we can soften them with the soft brush afterwards and then we'll have a nice soft effect, okay, you can see what I'm doing, I'm just letting it dance.
I kind of thought with the edge of my brush to let it sit and fail now that we have a little dark wave that appears here. I'm going to add a little touch of that. I want to take a little bit of cerulean blue with a little bit of phthalo blue and I'm just going to create a little rich, dark blue wave that appears and softens. you see the part soften, drag it now, a little touch of magenta on that and a touch of voice. I'm just going to let that fade so you can see that I'm being very lazy with my brush.
I know I can just drag the paint here and there, not too much, nothing too demanding. I'll take a little more cerulean blue. I think now even cerulean blue on its own would be a lovely color and I'm going to place it here and there to create some nice green waves by cultivating just to create some movement in the water. Well, that's really a little bit. of movement I want to take a little bit of black, I'm going to put a little bit of black up here on that wave, smooth it out and to be honest I probably could have done with letting my canvas dry for a little bit longer, it's still a little bit Touch on the west, it's the Wesley side, it's not completely dry on the undercoat, but look, okay, it's still working fine, I'm going to smooth them out to make it a little bit smoother, okay, now let me stop for a minute and take. a look take a step back and take a look always sit back and look at what you're doing well I'm going to darken it a little bit again at the top I think that really needs an appropriate dark color, rancid or blue a lot of black and a little bit of magenta, I think it needs a proper darkening up here, come on, I just lift up maybe a touch on this side, right at the top, I also think the contrast is really nice and I think it really catches the eye.
That corner up there is better now, isn't it? Now I'm also going to darken this wave, drag it slightly, bring it down and drag it, that's what I find creates beautiful waves, right, I'm going to change brushes. to go to a nice brush with sharp edges, okay, now a little brush like this, my little stubby brush, with a nice sharp edge, get some blue, two of those blues, mix them with some turpentine, I want make it nice and green with this, um, a greenish blue. so I'm going to take some Naples yellow and give it a good mix.
Okay, now make sure there isn't too much. I know. Brush, take the tip of the brush and let's start putting a little bit of that color here and there. You can see now that I'm slowly building up the layers. Well, that's what I tend to do. I start with darker colors and go up. You might have to get some cadmium yellow just to make it a lot more green, a bright green and Naples yellow. It makes it more of a kind of soft gray green, so I'm thinking that maybe I need to add just a touch of cadmium yellow to my palette and we can really start to look nice and bright with these colors, so let's do it.
To be exact, I find my cadmium yellow cube, cadmium yellow, okay, just a little bit of that, let's take some white, let's take a cadmium yellow cube and then I'll take some cerulean blue which should give us a nice bright blue color. Nice bright green now a little more blue. You could probably also use phthalo blue for this if you want, but a lot of white. You could also try a touch of phthalo. It's a very smart blue, but it has a hint of green. There is a good mix, don't be shy, let's try this, yes, not bad, but was it a nice bright color?
I love the color of the ocean. One thing to note is that you see this very bright white border that we have here. that wave, so you really want to keep the contrast of that, so I'm not going to be too bright with this color because I still want to be able to show that very bright line at the top of that wave, so be patient. That in mind, okay, if you go too late with the color, it will just start to fade into the background, so now I'm being very careful not to shine too much with this color.
I know I'm just going to move it. and letting it fade here and there, it's just a case of creating some movement in the water, that's all, and I'm using a lot of thick paint right on the edge of my brush, you see, and I'm letting it drag. on the canvas here and there creating some movement. I'm going to get some cerulean blue with white. I think just those two colors alone would be fine. Then I'll move in a minute. I'm going to switch to phthalo. blue with white that will give us much more, I think, a much brighter bluish-white color.
Let's try phthalo blue with some white and this should really give us a nice glow in the ocean. That's a little better now, isn't it? I'm going to go up here and create a little bit of movement in some of these waves, a little bit there and again, phthalo blue and a voice that you can see. I'm usinga lot of thick paint on this, just because I want these solid brush strokes. As I get further away into the distance, I'm going to kind of very lightly, dab, dab, dab, you see, it just creates little waves that break off into the distance, not too much, and then they just disappear into that darkness, you see, okay, now let's back up again and take another look, that's not so bad.
I'm going to soften a lot of this back, you see I'm just going to create a nice little soft feeling on this, now that very bright blue-green spot right there, I want to incorporate that, I'm going to take a little bit more cerulean blue and a lot of white a little bit of cadmium yellow I really want to get that very bright color you see that bright color there now again we're not copying this exactly right, we can add our own little colors if we like it to be our painting, we can do what we like, like this let's just put in a nice bright green color, speak wisely, and let it soften, so, you see, let's let them fade away.
Okay, now I'm going to take a little bit of white with a little bit of Naples yellow. I'm just going to add a little highlight through this here and there, look just to catch maybe the edge of some waves that are just starting to get ready to crash, yeah, like that, so we're ready for our big wave that's coming. star here. this big crest this is going to be fun it's going to be very exciting to try it I'm going to go back to my flat brush I'm going to give it a quick clean now it's full of dark paint so I need to give this a really good rub around that tissue to remove all the color and I'm going to start with the darker shades.
Okay, I'm going to start with a very dark color. Hey, let's take a look and see what color we can get now. all this let's take a little bit of phthalo blue, cerulean blue, a little bit of thinners and a touch of black, that black will naturally give you that kind of gray tone of teal, okay, that little touch of black will naturally take some voice in it's a little A little dark again. You see, I'm adding little bits of color as I go. I don't want to be too perfect with this. Okay, I'm just going to try to try colors and see how it goes.
I'm going to start with this color and I'm going to bring that color down like this all the way, so this, if you want, will be my kind of mid tone and I put shadows and highlights through this, okay, so now I'm getting my medium tone. First, I tend to do that, I don't work in the office the right way or the wrong way, but that's how I learned to paint and I took some of that bright green color and I'm I'm going to go this way. You see, it's nice and bright there. I'm going to bring it down and then this is going to soften into that darker color.
Look, I'm going to soften it like this. I'm going up. on this side so on this side I'm bringing it down and out this way and on this side I'm bringing it down and out this way and where they meet in the middle it'll come almost straight down you see and then slowly drag it out in their respective sides, from left to right, and I think that makes them more natural because you have to imagine the camera, if you're standing looking at this, you have to imagine yours right in the center when If you're in the center, it will look like it's coming directly towards you and from left to right it will move in opposite directions outwards, like this, well, I think that gives a much nicer perspective instead of doing it all in one direction like this, so I think this gives a much nicer perspective. , so now we have a nice darkness there too, you can see there's a nice bluish tone here and when I'm doing this now I'm really looking past all these little whites. parts, you see these wavy white lines.
I'm looking beyond all of them. I'm just looking at the background color. Okay, that color right behind all of those. That's the color I'm doing now. I'm just concentrating. So I'm imagining that those little wavy lines aren't even there right now. I'm just looking past all of that and going right into the background, looking at that background color as we go, okay, there we go, nice dark tone over here. I'll take some phthalo blue and cerulean blue. I'm going to start adding a nice kind of deeper blue up here, bringing it down and bringing it out again.
Okay, now I'm going to clean up my brush for a moment. just give it a quick clean and I'll start making it nice and dark in the center. I'm going to take some black cerulean blue and phthalo blue and this has to be nice and greenish. Okay, green, gray and blue. I'm going. It's nice and dark around the middle. I'm going to get nice and dark here just for a moment. Okay, we can lighten all of this now if we feel it's necessary, so don't worry, it's just small dark colored sections. that's what I can also see a little bit of cerulean blue and the way I'm doing this now is I'm almost dragging the paint from the brush to the canvas instead of the canvas pulling the paint, I'm being nice. of dragging the paint and letting it come off here and there on the canvas nice and dark there too and they're going to start softening some of these dark tones now the next job I'm going to do is take my soft brush and just smooth it out these together a little better and you see that vein moving it outwards like this so that it then also gives us the direction of the wave.
Now this brush is not perfectly smooth, it's a little well used, so you can start to see little lines in the brush on the canvas, it's not smoothing out completely correctly, okay, we'll go with what we have, okay, so I have many of my undertones. There, I'm going to start adding some lighter colors to this, now let me find another brush. Hmm, I want a nice flat brush for this, but nothing too big. Do you understand what I mean? I'm going to use this nice new one. brush nice sharp edged brush, okay, I'm going to start bringing in some highlights here, so let's get a little bit of white and a little bit of cerulean blue so it's not pure white, it's a very, very strong blue.
I'm going to start with this and I'm just going to go along the edge of that and let the paint come off, okay, see what I mean, so I'm actually just separating this from the background. That's the idea, just create that nice bright section right at the top and we can use details as details. Brushes now for all of this as well, but first for now let's use our flat brushes and I'm just going to start lightening all of this. Now I want to get a nice bright green color. I'm going to have some cerulean. blue with a little bit of cadmium yellow and a lot, a lot of white, okay, so we have a very rich bright greenish color and I'm going to start putting that color in here and that's kind of to really suggest, I guess, that kind of brightness.
You know, that glow that you'll get under the wave, the light that goes through the wave, that's what I'm trying to achieve, whether it works or not, I don't know, but I'll try anyway, do it like this, do you? OK? It's not like that, you clean the brush and start again, and it's almost all the way across, isn't it? It's nice and bright there. I'm going to take them down now, don't worry if you see those little ones. brush marks try not to worry about them, we can smooth them out in a moment, okay, they're just little things we can fix.
I know a lot of people don't like to see brush strokes in their paintings, what they want are all lovely ones. and soft, sometimes a little brush strokes here and there are quite nice, I think they just add to the painting, give the painting a little more character, okay, I'm going to add a little more of that down here, so now We are working more or less. Turning on our lights, you know what I mean? Let me clean my brush now and keep it nice and shiny here. I'm going to take a little bit of white, a little bit of phthalo blue and then a little bit of cadmium yellow which should give us a nice bright tone.
I'll take another soft brush, let me find another one, I have another one here somewhere, okay, I have another one here, let's try this, let's try to soften them together with this, just get rid of some of those rocks from the brush, okay, dragging it down a little bit. curve and again that's giving us the beautiful direction of the water, right? Let's see what we're going to do next. um I'm thinking now, I'm thinking, maybe get a detailed brush and start incorporating little details, yeah, we should try that. get a nice pointy brush let's get some white and I think just white with a touch of cerulean blue, the slightest hint, I don't have many thinners than this right now, okay, it's very thick paint and I'm just going to go ahead and look . just catch the edge of the wave like this and you'll see, just letting your brush dance around it really makes it nice and random, okay, and you feel like obviously you can't use a little spatula or something like that for this if like, um, that would be another lovely way to paint all this by putting in a lot of thick paint, but you know, I think this has a much nicer effect or something.
You just see that little curve. I love doing things like that. It is regular. nice with a small brush it's starting to come out right? It's starting to show little by little there's no rush with this you should really take your time um just don't go crazy okay a little movement like that let it go away okay remember have fun that's the most important thing you just have to enjoy it yeah You don't enjoy it, it doesn't make sense to me if I don't enjoy what I'm doing and I get frustrated, you know it doesn't make sense.
Now I'm going to start putting the colors a little bit darker for that kind of shock of seeing those wavy lines underneath that wave. I'm going to start putting them up. Well, I think I'll keep my same brush. I'm going to mix a slightly darker shade of blue. I'm going to go with some phthalo blue and grab some thinners. They love blue with a hint of cerulean blue, maybe I want to go a little darker than a whitish blue, that's fine, but I still want to do it. show it on this, I'm also going to take a touch of magenta now, if you take too much magenta, just take another touch of blue, okay, we don't want it too pinky, let me try this, so let's go like this and you.
I'll see all kinds of random lines and I'm rubbing my brush every time I do this. It's fine in my handkerchief. I'm just rubbing the brush on it a little bit just to keep it nice and clean. Now let's stop taking a step back and just take a look at this, okay, I think we're getting to that point. I can darken this slightly, but I still want to show it against that dark background. Makes sense? So, it's a tricky combination, you know, if you do it too. dark it will blend if you go too late it will look too bright so I guess we need to find a balance and basically it's a lot of strokes and letting your brush dance again okay but let's go ahead and see what happens and you just do what you feel like it's okay for you, okay, don't try it, don't try it, and paint a picture, that's what I would say.
You know, a lot of people try too hard to paint photographic images and you know. I just don't have the patience to paint photographs. Is for me. I just don't see the point in painting something to look like a photograph. Okay, it's beautiful to study. It's great to see, but I think, you kind of lose. the spontaneity of painting if you're going to paint something to make it look like a photograph to me I think you lose the enjoyment that's what I'll say and I want to enjoy my painting I don't want to sit for two hours painting a tree which to me is just wouldn't have fun if I was painting like that, but look, if that's what you like to do, that's what you like to do, but I think painting something like that loosely is a lot more fun.
I enjoy painting like this just creating pretty paintings using just basic techniques nothing too fancy now just add a little bit of dark color here and there I just want to darken some of these as they go up a little bit more so I'm really going to go. nice and dark here and there between some of them okay so you can see what I'm doing is just moving the brush letting it soften here and there okay now the next thing I'm going to do this should be something So. Light up everything. I'm just going to take a little bit of white and a little bit of Naples yellow, maybe that's okay, let's try it.
The white nipple is yellow, it makes a very bright white and then I'll start from the bottom and start adding little highlights and softening. top, okay, you'll see I'm cleaning my brush every time because I want to keep that shine, so let's try here, okay, I'll start from the bottom and let it kind of disappear, you'll see, and then we'll start for real. Capturing some of the highlights in these, and my brush is probably a little big for this, but I'll also use a small detail brush and just add little touches with a small brush, but it's just about showing the highlights. catching the ends of these, okay, that's really what I'm trying to show the lace, just catching the ends, the legs crossing, catching these beautiful little waves crashing, okay, stop on that note, take a look at it , now I can see that it looks a little like this. bright on camera because whatever way this camera works, it really shows the highlights, now I'm just going to soften some of those out and up, okay, I just want to lose, I just want to lose some of them now, the next thing I want what I havekind of angle, okay, I think that might help, I'm happy with that, I have one more thing to do, my friends, and that's just a sign, okay. the painting is not a painting until it is signed and it is not finished until it is signed because when you sign the painting you have the feeling that it is finished and you tend to leave it alone.
When it's signed, I'm going to move the camera back. and paste a frame on this. I have a lovely frame made one that I made before. Now I apologize for just moving and I'm going to adjust the camera slightly. Let's take a llama up there. We finished a frame and that's it. About that, my friends, do you like that? I think it's charming. I'm very happy with that and that's where we're done, so on that note I'll really thank you for tuning in to the latest seascape, I think for a while anyway. I will focus on some other topic in the future.
