I am proud to announce tonight that the United States government will work with Congress to provide $138 million in new funding to support human capital development in health, education, climate, and peacebuilding, and all of our investments will adhere to the principles of Gender Equality Women's Economic Empowerment and Inclusive Development Additionally, through the implementation of the Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability, the United States Government will work throughout the West African coast to promote inclusive economic growth and responsible governance and to prevent violence and conflict.
We are providing more than $30 million in initial funding to launch this regional program and will work with Congress to substantially increase funding over the next decade. We are committed to creating new professional exchanges with a special focus on the priorities of American and global citizens and will further advance women's economic empowerment. By expanding the Ghana Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, the Peace Corps will ultimately increase the number of volunteers in Ghana in agricultural education and health continuing decades of collaboration that began in 1961, when the world's first Peace Corps Volunteers arrived in Ghana, They thank you through us.
We have seen the connections between war and food insecurity, we have witnessed the impact that any crisis has on gender inequality, as well as poverty, and today more than ever we have to defend the rights of girls and young women, These are fragile rights and we must protect them at all times. my time and with advocates on important issues like fighting human trafficking, protecting vulnerable populations around the world, and helping lift families out of poverty, we have to fight hard against the consequences of war and all existing and future inequalities, and fighting hard means unlocking billions and mobilizing our energies and finances towards poor countries to tackle climate change to tackle the pandemic and health difficulties and to fight inequalities 7 million of Ukrainian children are affected by the war to help them and help Ukraine revive its educational sector.
Today's commitment of another €10 million for education cannot wait because the international community urgently needs to increase its investments in education so that all young people can exercise their right to education. Ukraine is fighting for its freedom and its values and ours. They are showing the great example of inspired leadership that is why we must follow them and do everything we can to help Ukraine fight now and return to normal life as soon as possible without investing in the rights of women and girls we will not get the rewards of the world a world that is more just, peaceful and prosperous for all over the past eight years hunger and food insecurity have steadily increased, which is unacceptable.
The largest number of people without enough to eat is found on the African continent. We cannot allow this to continue. Each and every person has the right to adequate food. and to alleviate the current food crisis we must all increase our efforts we need to work together to step forward to protect millions of people in communities around the world from the continuing threat of HIV AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis we must understand that health global is all our issues I know that every person here is here because they want to create real change. Yes, real change is about breaking down the systemic barriers that trap people in poverty and prevent them from reaching their full potential to create change.
We must start seeing people. not as a problem but as a solution and all of you would not be here tonight if you did not already know how to do it and for the last 10 years Global Citizens like you have been using your voice to end extreme poverty that affects more than a billion of foreign lives welcome backstage don't forget to take pictures share your experiences on Instagram Twitter and all social media platforms used in the hashtag globalcitizens Festival now backstage with two amazing activists who have been part of the global citizen movement for some time now Sabrina Dory Elba and Stormzy Foreign but as a son of the soil, yes you're back here, you're back home, yes the black things that are freedom and justice, how meaningful is this night to you, it's a man beautiful, this is your home. you know what I mean this is my home as much as I'm a Londoner I'm British this is this is my home this is what I'm from my mom is here too somewhere mom is here yeah somewhere I don't know where she is Have you Have you eaten any of your mother's cooking since you came back?
No, no, I haven't had my mother's food since I came back, but yeah, man, it's nice to be home. That's right, that was Sabrina, you have a beautiful Sabrina. By the way, amazing, thank you, you have been a friend and supporter of Global Citizen. How important was it for you to be here tonight? I mean, this is such a small part of what Global Citizen really does. They empower so many young people around the world. world to lend their voice to something they care about even if you don't have a dollar to your name you can still use your voice and speak so I'm very happy to support an organization as good as them and you have the platform so hey, why not?
That's stormy. You've been doing so much philanthropic work, especially with education and social justice. Now tell us why those two things, especially um. I think they're probably the things dearest to my heart, among other things, but yeah, man. I feel like we've always tried to execute it. I feel like I've always done whatever. I always say that and encourage everyone as well to do what they can in whatever capacity they can do. I mean. and choose what you want to do too, you know, sometimes, when we think about a change, when we want to change the whole world, but you know, I mean that's not always possible, but I always say do what's close to your heart and just try it. and let's try and try and start from there so yeah and it's always one step at a time one step at a time absolutely not Sabrina it's amazing that you're here tonight now you you you you you Advocates for change and climate change uh gender equality and everything else Do you feel like there's marginalization Do you think there's a change because we've been doing this for so many years?
Do you see any changes or concerns? I mean, how's that going? I know it can be very frustrating. for people sometimes when things say stagnant but I believe in the people I believe in the voices I believe in the voices of this crowd I believe in the voices of the continent to drive that change if we all use our voices and speak, we can encourage leaders to do what they're supposed to do and that's stand up for everyone on this planet, so I think change is happening very slowly, but I think if you have a voice, use it because obviously there's a lot to do, change is happening slowly.
If you have a voice, use it, ladies and gentlemen, Sabrina and Stormzy, enjoy the show abroad, are you ready? GH Make some noise, well yeah it's time we broke things up completely and next up on stage is a young DJ originally from export TV, well she was catapulted to stardom when a video of one of her concerts was went viral during lockdown, oh oh, and even Drake has said he wants to buy her waffles. Child Hunger Hunger appears in every school district if there is one child who does not receive the meals necessary to grow healthy and strong, that is too much with the help of no hungry child.
I have seen firsthand the transformation in our community when it comes to school meals I can serve and give back in a way that was given to me the city has been a partner without hungry children since 2014. they have provided resources equivalent to 290 million meals with the goal of eradicating childhood hunger, and this is where the fun is, I mean, listen. They're so loaded it's not even funny, this is where the fun is, so once again, listen to it. I think about this young man when he was on stage because of his very shiny blouse and I could see how he was dancing and having fun until now.
Very good, very good, I'm having the most fun of my life. Who has been your favorite so far? We've seen Stone Boy. We've seen Uncle Waffles. We've seen Thames and he's my favorite. Well, he says he's waiting. sarkodie and I'm sure many of you here are also waiting for your favorites, right, it's going to be exciting and believe me, that's why we are here, we are inspiring change and also ensuring that we have as much fun as possible. That's why our next artist has supported Global Citizen from the beginning. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the award. -winning artist John Legend, yes, Global Citizens. I wish I could physically be with all of you at Black Star Square to celebrate. I have been a proud supporter of the global citizen movement for the past 10 years and it is thanks to people taking action like you that we have been able to celebrate so much impact. I am so inspired by activists, artists, and everyday people who are using their voices and platforms to take action and create real change. Together we can create the world we want to live in, one that is equitable. and resilient, it is my honor to be here tonight to perform and pay tribute to the power and grace of all those who fight, especially the millions of girls and women who fight every day for equal opportunity, where loss It was alone, how do you always know?

I don't understand what you're doing. Yo Wonder Woman, how do you do your superhuman? And I'm just Superman, you're the best and the worst, more than I deserve, oh, you're there by my side. Could you put yourself first, give me hope, give me help when I'm there. Going through hell show me loving someone start loving myself You make me Wonder Woman no I don't understand you make me Wonder Woman how do you do it?
You're super cute, I'm just a man, oh you make me Wonder Woman, how do you do it? some superpower I don't understand your superhuman and I'm amazed thank you people's right to speak and be heard is fundamental to social change effective advocacy is key in the fight against extreme poverty but we need that to happen in attacks on security intimidation the defamation and harassment of activists must end we must defend people's right to assert themselves and orchestrate change they are us we are them creating a safe civic space that allows people to debate organize and plan is crucial in the fight to defend democracy eliminate poverty defend the planet and demand Private sector companies must take a clear stance on respecting and defending human rights and must tell the world about it instead of defending the defense that we all rely on to oxygenate our democracies the private sector needs to support a vibrant economy Civic space within our communities oh what an incredible night it has been so far and now I'm here backstage with Ghana's own song, Jackie, right, you've had an incredible two years, Yeah, what does it mean for you to be here tonight?

I'm blinded by the path again why my body this morning I prayed to find a path for another day you came abroad God bless you now it's time to feed the future we at gebo are ready to make Net Zero staff sustainable aviation fuel Combining renewable energy from sustainable agriculture with modern fermentation process technology and modern chemistry to produce hydrocarbon fuels. Delta wants to solve jet fuel problems in its greenhouse gas footprint. They are committed to it.
They are working with us to teach their clients about this. Well, abroad, you can never underestimate the impact that a decent education can have on reducing poverty, which is why education is at the heart of Global Citizens' work. Approximately 78 million children are out of school right now and only one in 10 children affected by the crisis are having the opportunity to learn, which is why Global Citizen helped launch Education Can't Wait, the first of its kind. Global fund to help children around the world access education in times of crisis and emergencies. Take a look at how children's lives have changed.
Go figure. You're in the middle of a conflict, I mean, you've literally lost everything in your life, and as a child, the only hope I have left is if I can get an education. I can change my life right now. 2 million girls, our work to end the world. poverty there are people all over the world who need help and we are all here right now making a change so thank you very much a few weeks ago I met Rihanna we decided to launch a goal for education and precisely to commit to the global association for Education we want to raise 3.1 billion For the next few years my government has committed to increasing our national budget for Education year after year.
I have been working with global citizens to call on the UK, Ireland, the US and other world leaders to ensure quality education. for children in crisis supporting education can't wait for fun tonight I'm proud to give effect to that commitment by announcing a €6 million pledge for education we can't waste foreigners foreigners in this audience tonight people who care about what is happening in our world to our world as if we are the ones who care about the issues that we are talking about here tonight, thank you here and for caring, because nothing is more urgent right now than climate change, the intense drought, floods, pollution, all are huge threats to the livelihoods of all Africans.
Around the world we can no longer stand by while climate change wreaks havoc on so many lives, our leaders must find solutions to the climate crisis and ensure that well-being is not just for us but also for our children, enough is enough, kiss me, please. welcome special envoy to south african president jeff rudderberg and baby kumsy from don't gas africa from the floods in south africa and the trolls in east africa the impact of climate change can no longer be ignored africans and global citizens around the world are doing your part by sharing your stories and taking action so that we take action on climate change we must also address energy poverty because there can be no development without access to energy energy is a fundamental right in South Africa Millions do not have access to reliable energy and president ramaphosa and his cabinet have had the voice that this agentneeds, that's why investing in reliable, renewable energy capacity is a top priority today.
We can underline our strong commitment to transition 18 gigawatts of calling capacity by 2035 to renewable energy in early 2023 early next year we have a plan to gradually transition calling capacity to renewable energy. We are also committing to affordable replacement and accelerating renewable energy decommissioning by 50 percent over the next five years. Over the next six months we will bring another 150 megawatts of solar PV and battery storage to financial close African businesses and governments are willing to stand up, but we need partnerships for a new and fair energy transition that leaves no one behind . If this can be done right, this shift towards a clear energy future could provide an additional 1,360,000 jobs in South Africa alone. we call on industrialized countries to fulfill their promise to provide 100 billion US dollars annually until the end of this year and to invest heavily in renewable energy on the African continent we call on development banks, especially the World Bank, to recognize that the climate crisis is happening now and make finance available on affordable terms now is the time to move beyond the climate wars of the past now is the time to harness the energy of young people to bring their creativity and optimism to the world of climate justice.
Now is the time to act. I urge all African leaders to invest in clean renewable energy that will directly benefit people across the continent without harming their health at a time when many countries are moving away from fossil fuels. The African Union is considering a common position on energy. access and transition which, if adopted, will have no impact on access to renewable energy, but rather we represent the interests of the fossil fuel industry at this time. More than 200 African civil society organizations across the continent have come together to ensure that doesn't happen and we need everyone to join our doncast Africa campaign to ensure we send a powerful message to our African leaders.
Help us call on African leaders to reject this proposal and prioritize evidence-based policies around the just transition to renewable energy. The time for an energy system that is clean. and Democratic is now Global Citizens. I stand next to an icon, the giant of Accra Ghana. I'm standing next to Sarkodie and of course he's not alone, he's here with his wine and this Tracy, I know my brother too, how are you? feeling today, can you hear that energy out there? A big shout out to South Nation. You already know what time it is. I feel good and you are welcome to Ghana.
You already know. I have wanted to come here. Now that you've done it. amazing work in Ghana, you have your own Sarkodie Foundation, what made you start the foundation and what do you think you hope will impact the lives of Ghanaians. Yes, because of how I grew up as a child, I had a very rough start. I can relate to a lot of kids who are in the same space, but then Sarkodie is here on the screen, you know, doing what I love, so I had the opportunity to be able to go out, so I felt it was right to look back at the kids. , but that's the Next Generation, it's the only way we can fix the mistakes, so I built this foundation for them because I see myself when I see them continue to work on the phone.
You have the Brave project, which is basically training through Stem for young women, which made you start the organization. I think anyone who has the opportunity or the platform to share their message or has a voice, we always have one. to be able to give back and, for me, I think empowering young women through education, whether it's stem training, whether it's through health, whether it's through career aspirations, that's basically why I started Brave and it's been a wonderful experience, actually being able to play. the lives of other young women here in Ghana and giving them the opportunity that they might not otherwise have, so yes, congratulations on the success of the Brave project and know that we continue to impact so many young women in Ghana once again. ask our icon you're about to hit the stage right I can't wait oh one word to describe your performance at the Global Citizen Festival uh fans swag oh everyone be safe swag now It's time to act when normally we talk about climate change, we talk about carbon and we really ignore water.
Net positive water is about returning more water to the environment than we consume through the Accenture Sustainable Innovation Challenge, a six-month accelerator program. We have developed a prototype that can help detect water leaks. around the world Diversified by work United by passion, we are here to solve sustainable water problems. Hello again everyone, listen up. It's one thing to hear about climate change and its impacts on the planet, but another entirely to witness it firsthand and see the faces of those who are forced to confront its effects head-on even though they have contributed the least. to climate change, but when you're miles away it's easy to ask why I care.
I hope we have learned. anything about the pandemic is that we are all one, when one individual on the planet is affected, we are all rural people affected and rural farmers are the new real faces of climate change and they are the people who feed the entire world day in and day out. through my work. As a proud United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the International Fund for Agricultural Development, I have seen first-hand that young people in rural communities and farmers have the solutions. They are the custodians of this planet, but the effects of the climate crisis, the effects of conflicts and growing inequalities.
They are affecting their ability to prosper, this is disastrous for the food security of all of us, they all need our support, they need our investment, investment in hard-working people who are not just looking for a handout in the same way the world came together to fight the global issue. The pandemic is the same way we must take action to end world hunger. This must end now. World leaders do their job and invest in sustainable agriculture to help feed our growing world. Drive economic growth and allow people to live with dignity. Thank you, foreigner, foreigner, how important.
It is for us to work together as a global community, if someone is suffering somewhere on the other side of the planet, we are all suffering, the people of the countryside, particularly the people of Africa. I have seen that the work they do cultivating the land around them as leaders in biodiversity really makes them the custodians of this Earth and I truly believe that they are not only the face of climate change but they are part of the solution. More than 80 countries have responded to the call. Thanks to the governments of Global Citizens. They have listened to all your efforts. messages and that is why today, with your support, we can create a better future for millions of the world's poorest people who are currently struggling to survive and feed their families.
We need to continue to identify evolving challenges, such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. We need to keep promising. and by adding more resources, we ensure that small farmers are supported, we create systems that allow them to achieve their development goals abroad, thank you, now is the time to act. Alright, and the show goes on now 12 years ago, a young Nigerian woman, Yami Adamolekun, was invited by a friend to attend a protest in Abuja, Nigeria. Now, inspired by the power of people coming together to be heard, she helped launch Enough is Enough! a non-profit organization. organization focused on educating Nigerians on ways to hold their leaders accountable and today yemi is still taking steps to ensure that more citizens understand the power they have to claim and enforce their rights abroad to do this work because I strongly believe in purpose concept my name is andI campaign for good governance and public accountability in Nigeria through active citizenship enough is enough started in March 2010 from a protest but after the protest we decided to turn the energy into an organization which later focused in the elections for To solve the problem in Nigeria we must organize ourselves and if you do not take an active role or do not participate you are on the losing side, so the focus was on the youth, so the idea was to involve them and channel their anger instead of the streets about how they vote and the decisions they make when we are united in what we are seeing, we are still demanding it is our ability to fulfill our dreams it is governance that determines whether you pay for school or if it is free it is governance that determines whether you sit on the floor or in a chair the governance that determines whether you have a roof over your head in school or if you are in class and it is raining so it is important because it affects all lives Nigerians feel that this is their country and they smell bad, what we want to see as a summer of office is for citizens to understand the power they have in any way they can.

Climate change has already increased economic inequality between countries and threatens to push millions of people into extreme poverty. and puts them at risk of hunger, which is why both world leaders and private sector companies must commit to reducing emissions and investing in climate change mitigation. Ending climate change and ensuring that everyone everywhere is protected from its life-threatening consequences is critical if we want to end extreme poverty now – this is today's problem, not tomorrow's problem. We need Net Zero targets that are based on cold, hard facts driven by data, the planet and its most vulnerable citizens demand it, so the companies you belong to commit to the science-based targets initiative. then shout from your solar paneled rooftops every time you hit your annual goals because you're on the right side of History.

I can't hear you, who do you want to see next? Well, we're almost there, but of course, there's so much that we've had on stage in the crowd and, of course, everyone is participating in this historic night, but it's now. It is an absolute pleasure to welcome Global Citizen co-founder Mick Sheldrake to the stage, please put your hands together for him, thank you, thank you for the last 10 years, the eradication of polio around the world has been one of the Key Global Citizens campaigns since 2011, government Rotarians and community health workers have answered their call. Africa was declared free of wild polio in 2020 and now it is, and now the entire world is on the brink of eradication.
However, polio is 99.9 eradicated, yet in that little Romania, 0.1 vulnerable children around the world are still at threat of paralysis or death from polio and tonight I am here to tell you that there is hope. Global citizens and Rotarians have helped secure commitments around the world to help eradicate polio once and for all. The end of polio is in sight, but we must all continue to take action thank you, you can play a tremendous role adding your voice to the cause convincing world leaders that funding is needed now to end polio forever today Luxembourg pledges An additional €500,000 for the global polio eradication initiative and together we can and will see the end of polio in our lifetime.
Canada has long supported efforts to combat polio, which is now eliminated 99.9 times every day. Rotary and Global Citizen members begin our days knowing that we can make a difference together with our Global Health Partners. We are on the verge of eradicating polio forever. So many continents were present in Nigeria to support polio eradication. The GPEI, which, the CDC and Global Citizen, the champion of donor advocacy 400 GBEI in order to obtain adequate resources for polio eradication, there was an innovative approach and strategies to reduce cases to almost zero in 2020. I worked with Who as a polio eradication initiative campaign from 2002 to I make sure all children are immunized.
My five children have received the vaccine and I am very happy because their immune system has improved. Polio eradication in Nigeria has shown that the strategies used to achieve it can work for other preventable diseases before the vaccine is available to your children. They used to die all the time, but they have the threat of the Wildfolio virus. Now that the vaccine is accessible, there will be no more paralysis of children in the community and now that the community is aware of immunization, they will let their children take it because they have seen the importance. Look into the lens, we could never have accomplished any of this without our incredible team of global citizens, including a man who first had a dream of bringing the Global Citizen Festival to Africa, a man who, like his grandfather, is a leader in this movement.
Head of Global Citizens. Vision Officer Kwaku Mandela and our Vice President of Policy, who has led many of the campaigns that many of you here have done tonight to earn your ticket, Liz Agbo Tabby, all these faces before you tonight are just some of the faces behind this Vision, so please. join me, let's leave it for our amazing rock stars, Black Star, are you ready? When I envisioned bringing the festival back to Africa it was because I knew the importance for the staff and talent of our partners to be in places where we hope to have an impact and it really takes a village to put on a show that is incredible.
I also like to give a massive statement from Ghana without you we would not be on this stage in Ghana and our neighboring West African countries. There is a concept called Sankofa which means one must remember the past to make positive progress in the future, looking back at the last 10 years of the Global Citizens Festival, we have made a lot of progress, but to achieve more the structures and processes must be changed. systems, that's why we need everyone. of you here tonight to continue to raise your voices and call on world leaders to take action and here tonight here in Accra, thanks to everyone's efforts, we have seen more than 400 million US dollars committed, that is, more than 4 billion cities, but as we gather in this historic place where we say that to be truly successful we need a global reset, we need IMF shareholders to deploy all their resources and we need global solidarity, so raise your voices and continue to take action tonight.
We have shown the world that Africa has a lot to offer, but we must create a level playing field and include all levels of society to move forward. We have an amazing night ahead of us and since I've been here several times, so for those of you who have seen me before, if I repeat my jokes, just laugh so everyone thinks it's funny, okay, okay, act surprised, the show is just beginning for all of us here, but today thousands of people filled Black Star Square in Accra for the first time at the Global Citizen Festival in Ghana, as you all already know, tremendous progress has been made to end extreme poverty, but there is still a lot of work to do, especially since the pandemic pushed us so hard.
Long overdue, we need to break down the barriers that hold women and girls back, we need to address the climate crisis, we need to address the fact that right now over 700 million people are still living in extreme poverty, so there is much to do and AS Global Ciudadanos, we know how to do it well, we know how to ask for change and generate impact. In fact, we've been doing it for 10 years. Let's take a look back. Thank you all for being global citizens. In no way has 250 million US dollars been committed. the one and only Beyoncé, deserve the same opportunities to receive an education as my daughters and yours.
Everyone knocks down the door of the global citizen to take action because it's like nothing else. You are now part of the global fight to end extreme power. We are thanking first responders and others on the front lines of this global pandemic, we all need each other and we are capable of this When we are united in the mission to normalize equality, there is a spirit in all of us to unite and demand that no one , wherever it is born, it is left behind. This is real, like it's not a joke. The actions of a movement. It takes a lot of people to drive lasting change, which is why Global Citizen is about action Join our host, welcome, Guy Osiri. Ambassador Rachel Brosnahan, leave it for the incredible Angelique Kidjo, come on, at the current pace of progress, it could take more than 267 years. achieve gender equality, which would make women around the world active decision makers in all aspects of their lives; would also see male allies rising to the occasion and standing up as proud feminists with global citizens like you taking action, we can turn the tide and get things working again. path to achieving that reality and in the last 10 years Global Citizens has taken more than four million actions to empower women and girls, which helped mobilize more than 4 billion dollars.
Education has been a major focus as part of this and efforts to end poverty for over 10 years. Last 10 years in 2016 Global Citizen partnered with other organizations to launch the Education Can't Wait $1 Billion Global Fund to meet the educational needs of millions of children in crisis. Take a look at what happened when Global Citizens like you stood up for girls. education imagine you are in the middle of a conflict, I mean you have literally lost everything in your life and as a child the only hope I have left is if I can get an education. I can change my life right now. 62 million girls are out of school, giving them opportunity at the heart of our work to end global poverty.
There are people all over the world who need help and we are all here right now making a change, so thank you very much a few weeks ago. I met Rihanna, we decided to launch a goal for education and precisely commit to the global association for education. We want to raise 3.1 billion for the next few years. My government is committed to increasing our national budget for education. I have been working with global citizens to call on the UK, Ireland, the US and other world leaders to ensure equal education for children in crisis by supporting education. I can not wait.
Fun tonight. I am proud to give effect to that commitment by announcing a pledge of €6 million so that education cannot go to waste for foreign Japanese. Please welcome the CEO of the Lego Foundation and Brigitte Albertson and Director of Education, Yasmine Sharif, you can't wait, so imagine if there was a magic wand that could transform the lives of millions of children affected by war and disasters. Well, there is education. The Lego Foundation is delighted to be able to tonight. announce 25 million in new funding for Education cannot wait the united nations global fund for education and the protracted and emergency crisis now I call on others to commit to the same cause because together we must invest in children most frequently marginalized and show the world that governments and philanthropic Non-profit organizations can do anything when they stand shoulder to shoulder to face the challenges of our time, let us truly work together to transform the world through education.

Children around the world have had their education disrupted, but crises are multiplying, so commitments like this are essential to get them back on track. I participated in the first Global Citizen Festival here in Central Park in 2012 and it made me think about how much has changed in the last 10 years. NASA, for example, announced its first spacewalk by an all-female crew Quitting NASA Serena Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam title and my friend Misty Copeland became the first African-American principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. Yeah, growing up, I didn't see many girls. or the women represented at the forefront in sports or politics, it wasn't that they weren't capable, they just needed the opportunity and then one day I saw Katie Couric become the first solo anchor of a network evening newscast and it was a big deal what girls see what we decide to show our girls and what we show our boys.
In fact, it really makes a difference if girls see women represented as artists, athletes, scientists, world leaders in business and government, they can see themselves in those roles in the future. Female representation in the media plays a vital role in that and PNG is a company that has really recognized its responsibility to deliver accurate and authentic representations in its advertising. It also matters who tells the stories, having women behind the camera and doing advertising and film media, which is Why I'm pleased to welcome to the stage, an advocate for girls and award-winning filmmaker, Zuriel Arawale. Leave it for Zuriel.
Everyone, come on, what's going on? New York, how are you guys today? Well, yes, they sound amazing. Make some noise. Thank you so much. Katie and Misty For that introduction, uh, I'm honored to share the stage with trailblazing women like you, as well as Global Citizen. I have been taking action for girls and our planet for the last 10 years, when I was 12 years old. part of png's iconic forever campaign that changed norms and culture around the world and made being a girl mean something amazing tonight. I'm pleased to announce that PNG is stepping up again to create new content that showcases a more gender equal world and the housework gap for women. and girls have only grown since the pandemic affected girls' education and women's economic opportunities by leveraging air movement to share the load in India and Dawn and the Swifts close the gap in the US PNG will launch more campaigns that portray equal sharing of work in our homes because we believe that home quality and equality in our homes goes a long way to creating more equality in our world.
Thank you all so much, let's welcome women in training founders Brooke and Brianna Bennett and Miss Universe 2021 tap Sandhu just Namaste Global Citizens. I'm proud to join you and these two extraordinary young women to talk about periods. My mom is yes, my mom is a gynecologist. So I grew up talking about my period without shame and always had access to the products I needed, but that is not the case for the over 500 million people around the world who experience poverty during the term. Poverty affects one in five people in the U.S. Girls in the U.S. miss school or activities because they don't have access to the menstrual products they need.
We started training women in our hometown of Montgomery, Alabama to advocate for menstrual equity and health education and to help our girls in our community and they have been doing that. incredible work, but tonight we are here to announce a new Collective, the global mental equity accelerator, so this group is starting a new campaign called period for change, yes period for change, that will fight against the policies of influence of stigma and will ensure the resources necessary to end poverty. Please welcome the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Patel, and the executive director of the United Nations population fund, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, Natalia connem.
Global Citizens Luxembourg shares a new commitment to empowering women and girls around the world for too long. Humanity has accepted the denial of the autonomy of women and girls, which is not normal, practices such as female genital mutilation damage the life and future of bodies. I am proud to announce tonight that my country, Luxembourg, will increase its funding by more than 70 percent over the next four years to support the joint programme. between UNFPA and UNICEF to end this practice once and for all we need to empower women, girls and adolescents to exercise their sexual and reproductive health and rights and make autonomous decisions about their bodies sorry guys, it's not our place I'm sorry guys, it's not up to us to decide what's good for a woman, let them make their decision themselves thank you, thank you for this commitment, thank you and I'm also delighted to announce an additional 10 and a half million dollars to boost a improved delivery of quality services to promote the health and well-being of women and girls. well-being thanks to the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation join us here tonight as we rally around the world for women's health and rights I need a problem foreign host and founder of dream.org Tech, van Jones, uh what another amazing performance by Stormzy all the way at Black Star Square was amazing listen global citizens it's good to see you all here today I'm here asking for change you're asking for change one of the best ways we we can fight for a positive future is To open access to education, especially around technology, my entire family rose out of poverty on a bridge called my father's back and it was largely because my father had access to a quality education that is a ticket out of poverty for everyone, especially when we focus on preparing young people. people for the jobs of the future young people and people of color need to be able to participate and design what is coming in technology.
It's not about fighting to be at the back of the line for the jobs of the last century, it's about putting underappreciated young people to the front of the line for the jobs of the new centuries and ensuring that the change that is coming works for everyone. Verizon knows this, they've made great strides in empowering young people in technology, so join me in welcoming Verizon's Chief Corporate Social Officer to the stage. accountability officer Rose Kirk and two incredible young people William Chavez and menu Patel Hello global citizen, what would you do if you were given a billion dollars to spend over 10 years?

This is very exciting for everyone because this Texas native has made history and changed country music forever by using his voice and visibility as a platform for social justice. It is an honor to sing in front of you, hello and to sing for so many people committed to making this world better and fighting hunger and poverty in the world and fighting for equality and equity for women and girls and what is happening in this world. Be exactly who you are meant to be, who God designed you to be again. My name is Mickey Guyton. This is my new single. Something about you. Come on, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what you do, but you have me in my feelings forever. Citizens have taken more than 2.4 million actions for the planet that have led to the mobilization of millions of dollars not only in commitments but also in political measures to save the planet and its people, but we must keep up that pressure. The poorest nations in the world are those that contribute the least to climate change but suffer the most from its effects.
It could be too hot to live in places in sub-Saharan Africa, South America and India, sea levels are rising today faster than ever. and yet the funds allocated to international climate finance that would help communities respond globally and adapt to climate change is obviously far less than what is needed to address this problem at scale. Joining us now are two activists who are part of the world's largest climate movement and are making sure their message is heard. Please welcome him to Uganda. Climate justice activist Vanessa nakate and Mexican climate activist Shia bastida from the Fridays for Future movement hello everyone and how are we hello everyone yesterday she and I yesterday she and I took to the streets to demand Justice for the most affected people Because of the climate crisis, the most affected in the community are also the most marginalized.
We are suffering the devastating consequences of a problem that we did not create. So who is going to pay for these communities? For Pakistan, for the Lost Islands of the Caribbean and the Pacific, for the destruction in Uganda? communities that must flee the coast of Bangladesh and the drought in the Horn of Africa the rich nations are the ones that created this crisis and they have to step forward we are fighting for our future and to create a society that works in harmony with Mother Earth is not against this you cannot adapt to hunger you cannot adapt to extinction you cannot adapt to the loss of your cultures you cannot adapt to the loss of your identity the loss and damage is happening right now and it is time to put it into action the center of all negotiations and we can all still take action, ask leaders to meet the climate commitment of $100 billion a year to finance the global South, demand the implementation of a fossil fuel treaty that you all can sign personally and defend against the destruction of nature. at a decisive moment and we can all do something for climate justice so what do we want?
Climate justice, when do we want it now? What do we want the climate? Justin, when do we want her now? Goodbye, please, welcome, climate change activist and 2022 Global Citizen Awardee. Citizen Award winner Brianna Fruen and science educator and television host Bill Nye here are some facts about the Pacific Islands. There are 25,000 of them inhabited by 2.3 million people who speak almost 1,800 different languages. The ecosystem has unique fish. Birds. Turtles and seagrasses. Magnificent places are on the front lines of climate change as the planet disintegrates, glaciers melt, storms intensify and destruction hits, hitting them first and hitting them fast.
Climate change is Our Generation's crisis, but we don't need to see it. As the end, we can see it as the beginning of a new era in which we all come together to renew our relationship with nature. I have been working to combat climate change since I was 11 years old and I can tell you that for this to work we need to defend climate defense the attacks on activists must stop this intimidation deter others from speaking out and creating change the time for change is Now is the time for rich nations to pay for the damage they cause to island nations like mine, we feel the effects we see the destruction and experience the despair of climate change even though we have never had anything to do with the cause and now let me introduce you to two leaders of the island nations, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Brown, and the President of Vanuatu, thank you all.
Distinguished Global Citizens despite our negligible contributions to climate change, it is small island states like Antigua and Barbuda that are experiencing its worst effects as chair of the alliance of small island states. I am asking Global Citizens to call and we are leaders to engage with. create an official damage loss response fund at COP 27 as a form of climate justice where the polluter pays, the polluter must pay our demands do not end there, high and middle income small island states must not be excluded from much-needed development assistance, especially during times of climate crisis, which is why I call on the United Nations to adopt a new system that looks beyond mere income and adopts a multidimensional vulnerability index. that takes into account the vulnerability and resilience of small island States.
In this call for a just response to climate change, much love and blessings. I thank you, hello global citizens. I am fortunate that Vanuatu, together with a coalition of countries, is leading an international campaign to bring the issue of climate change to the international court of Justice is also important, but what do we do supporting countries and are called to face in the face of coal, oil and gas, the three most important drivers of the climate crisis we now face? Global citizen, when water hears your voice, we will do it. Let us leave no stone unturned and deliver our unbreakable and faithful climate Justice thank you Tomás México to whom I thank you all and have a good night everyone, please welcome the Prime Minister of Barbados Mia.Love Motley, good afternoon, this is a story that we have seen unfold on the world stage time and time again, poor countries paying the price for richer nations, my friends, we are seeing this now in Pakistan, where the flooding is so extreme that it has pushed a third of the country under the water, it's apocalyptic.
Pakistan has a very small carbon footprint and yet it is suffering some of the most devastating effects of this climate crisis and yes, this is just one example among many here in the Americas. Rico has been paralyzed by flash floods this week Guadeloupe, the Turks and Caicos Islands and Bermuda have been victims of Hurricane Fiona, my friends, this is proof that the climate crisis is real and, yes, it is man-made. We have to convince world leaders to take action. action to help the countries that need it most. I said last year that this is a death sentence for us and that the crises are only going to multiply, so today I am here speaking directly to the leaders of the rich nations, but through you, because these nations have the power They have received billions of dollars from the IMF and through special drawing rights we want them to receive them for covert activities 19. now keep your promise to reallocate some of those funds keep your word to provide at least the 100 billion dollars that was promised in Paris years ago for the adaptation of climate vulnerable countries and yes, we are going to establish a network, a framework for funding loss and damage because it is fair, it is right and it is the only thing that will make them pay for what we are suffering, My friends, I am also here to call on multilateral institutions like the World Bank to act.
The only way forward is a green transition with fair energy and yes my friends our time is running out, you can't win slowly and get ahead because you will lose fast thank you please welcome to the global citizen stage Charlie Puth let's do it abroad where We started to sing leave us but you have to go so soon she has to go but she has to leave me when I needed you the most play your I come back again and again and I hear your last words I know you're in a better place but it's always going to hurt So take it with me all the strength I need to continue a long day without you, my friend screams every time I am without you.
Feeling so cold, so carry on, give me all the strength I need to carry on. Wait for every memory as you go and every route you take. Clark tells me. See you again abroad. Today's memories of New York occupy every corner of my mind ever since. oh no, I'm going around in a circle, the sky is trapped in my head since you left, memories every time I close my eyes, I can feel it, you occupy every corner of my mind, listen now, look, everyone turns and looks. that Skyline right now is something incredible. I want to thank you all for being here today, you took action so that a better world is here today.

I was listening to that song again and in light of more current issues and, in particular, you know the state of women in our country and around the world in a very different way. I discovered a very appropriate message for our times and for the women of our time in the lyrics of that particular song and I am very proud of everyone this generation is. taking the steps that everyone is taking towards equality for all equity for all, I mean, whether it's related to race or gender, and I like it so much that I can't even tell you how honored I am MC where is Misty Copeland that my friend Misty Copeland came today? a woman of that stature, imagine she is just incredible, came to this Global Citizens Festival and to help us put together this very special song, one of a kind, this is the first time that there is only one version of this song and I dedicated it to all women.

Okay, just a little bit more guys, keep up the spirit. Access to clean water should be a basic human right, but the sad truth is that around the world 4.5 billion people do not have access to safe sanitation and 2 billion people currently lack access to quality water. Having clean water and sanitation allows people to avoid exposure to disease, empowers women and girls to face their periods with dignity, and keeps people safe, but access around the world is not equitable and I am personally committed. to change this and I am pleased to say that many impact makers around the world are too.
Global Citizens have taken hundreds of thousands of actions and, as a result, secured commitments to bring sanitation facilities in schools and much more. I think my dream world is that everyone can take for granted that clean water and sanitation should be available to everyone. The World Bank group has the ambition to invest $15 billion over the next five years in sanitation and water. Solutions Sweden's nearly 10 million people will support efforts to improve access to sanitation for 60 million people. I am here to pledge our commitment that the practice of open defecation will be eradicated in Nigeria by 2025 or even sooner.
We are delighted to invite Global Citizen and everyone. from you to India I believe that everyone has the power to create a change in the world because everyone who has created a change in the world has simply been a person and therefore acting alone means that if you care about sanitation in India, especially in places like Global Citizen, you can find a way to raise your voice in a way that makes politicians take notice. Hello, I am a citizen. Festival India, we can proudly announce that today, in the next three hundred thousand water and sanitation services, we are committed to open defecation free Maharashtra. times 2018.
Unfortunately, more than 47 percent of schools do not have functional toilets, especially for girls, this creates a major problem in terms of diarrhea, urinary infections and leads to school dropouts. The best way to get girls to come to school is the basics, not rocket science. give them better bathrooms give them clean water, that's good, so if nandini keeps coming to school, her father is a sweeper, but nandini could end up being a doctor and she will lift her entire generation out of poverty. Please welcome thePresident of Rotary International, Jennifer. In the last year alone, 25 million children were left without vital vaccines to protect against diseases like polio the world has defeated this virus significantly, but we must redouble our efforts, so tonight I am especially proud to announce that Rotary International will commit an additional $150 million to the global polio eradication effort. We want this to be the beginning. of a massive effort to reach the Global Citizens initiative's $4.8 billion funding goal Use your voice help us call on governments, businesses and others to join us and make ambitious commitments at the Global Citizens Summit. Ukraine is fighting for its freedom and ours. and values that are showing the great example of inspired leadership that we must follow and do everything possible to help Ukraine fight now and return to normal life as soon as possible without investing in the rights of women and girls we will not achieve the world What we want. We want a more just, peaceful and prosperous world for all.
Over the last eight years, hunger and food insecurity have constantly increased, which is unacceptable. The African continent is where we find the largest number of people without enough food. We cannot allow That continues each and every person has the right to adequate food and to alleviate the current food crisis we must all increase our efforts, we must work together to protect millions of people in communities around the world from the continuing threat of HIV, malaria and AIDS. tuberculosis, we must understand that global health is our business.
