Mar 26, 2024

ghost

s, specters and spirits alike, mark with cardavox academy here, thanks for hanging out and today we're doing it, we're doing it, let's talk about Nightwish now let me talk a little bit about Night Wish. First of all, this may come as a surprise to you. I've only heard one late night wish song in my life and that was Planet Hell and I heard it when the album, I think the album is on once, I heard it when it first came out. Back then, Nightwish had a different

vocal

ist, Tadia, I think that was her name, and now, as I understand it, Nightwish is huge, now people have asked me to talk about Nightwish and, uh, Flor Jensen or Jensen, tell me if I'm pronouncing it correctly in the comments below if you know it, I'm sure many of you know it.

Many people have asked me to make the night wish, but I have always avoided it because until now on the channel we have tried it. focus on things that as a

vocal

coach

I will teach and I teach predominantly shouting and hoarse singing and harsh singing and things like that, but you know, we've been slowly getting out of the comfort zone here and I think let's move on. and do it, I'm a little late to the game here, a lot of people have reacted to Nightwish. I hope I can add some value, but this is going to be a lot of fun, so if you're new to the channel.

love

This song is all over the place, but in such an epic way, I'm so excited to see where this goes in 10 minutes and 22 seconds and they call me

ghost

love

I'm imagining this is going to be one hell of a ride, we just slow down a little bit, let's hope we get something good, oh, so first things first, um, his voice is stellar, his voice. This is like a pure diamond, I'm not hearing any problems with vocal cord closure and this is not like, I didn't expect it in the first place, right, she's a classically trained singer, she's amazing, I know . her um but I'm definitely hearing some of the perfection that people talk about let's move on but incredible control over everything breathing support resonance phonation um let's move on so listen to how she brought that vibrato to the end, it's nice and it's a subtle vibrato, right, she's not all over the place up and down, it's this nice vibrato that's happening, you know she's in control of it, but it's also happening as a byproduct of relaxation and that's something I really want to point out here, um, I don't.

I see a hint of tension in his body like none other and being someone who is primarily a death core and death

metal

screamer um and who teaches death core and death

metal

screamer that's something I see a lot and it's really a non-negotiable jaw tension tension in the neck that will ruin you and she has none of that and that's part of what allows her tone to be so perfect her tone her movement between notes the intonation is like you really can't do much better than that in my opinion, um, I feel like she's holding back a little bit, but not in a bad way, like she's drawing on my anticipation and I'm like, what are you going to give me here in the next few minutes? because I'm already getting amazing technique here. um, she also has very good control over her vowels.
If you look at her mouth, if you look at the shape of her mouth, her oral posture, you can see her making little adjustments with her lips and her jaw to really. Make every vowel count right and just watch, watch your mouth as we go on, but damn, stick, stick, stick, yeah, all I can first carelessly, now, that's good storytelling, that's good storytelling, so, throughout that section, she started off a little warmer. a little more sighing, true, but in a good way, and throughout the song, she started to give her voice a little power, you can see in a couple of places that she actually moved her lips away from her teeth, illuminating that bell and near the end.
There, near the end, she gave it a little more and started, she, as a

vocalist

, built that transition in our ear until the opening, let's go back here for a couple of seconds like when the drums come in and you say Okay, we're getting back to rock and metal vibrations. um let's come back here and I want you to hear how she changes her voice, she brightens that timbre, gives it a little more support underneath it and then we as listeners know. Okay something is happening here carelessly hold that hold no brother hold that note hmm okay I can hear something that's going to happen and let's go ahead and listen to that transition but first I want to talk about a couple of things.
How about for me? She sounded like an oboe. How about that oboe jumping in there and generating some anticipation and joy? This got cool too, one thing I'm really noticing here is that these fans are legit, like that crowd, I think what every musician dreams of, I think I saw like a couple people crying, I think I saw like one or two tattoos of late night wishes and everyone, I didn't see a sign of the band, but everyone started clapping, which tells me that the entire crowd knows this song so well that they can collectively count and anticipate when something will happen.
I've been someone I didn't see on stage saying, "Come on, yeah, sure, but I didn't see it." So pretty, let's see what's going on here, let's see what's going to happen, bring it to me every day. I'll stop it and I don't care who gets mad, what the hell, good sir, okay, first of all, remember how in the beginning, when I was, I think she's holding back, I think it's like, you know, she, she's hiding Which is what he's going to do, uh, I think. that might have been what she was waiting for um and again I don't want to say she hasn't been amazing already, but we heard three completely different voices like in this section, so she came in and we're going to listen to that. all over again because I want to and that's what I do, I do what I want, um, but she had a pretty good vibe, not very brave but very well articulated, like rock, and one thing I like about her voice is very good.
She uses styles that are popular but doesn't fall into the stereotypical sound that I'm honestly not a big rock guy and I know this isn't a rock song but she used some rock singing and rock singing techniques. It always makes me feel like I'm in a bar, I don't want to be in the transparent moment, sorry, and she had a bit of a rock vibe, but she sounded like a war goddess likes to call soldiers to the battle, right, um. and then we did what it sounded like to me again I'm not an opera singer um I'm not trained in opera but to my ear it sounded like full blown opera like we had that very, very round, very oh oh sound that had a strong yet controlled vibrato that comes out of the headspace just what you think when you listen to opera is what I heard and then she threw in some sand like what the hell and then she went straight as a metal so we heard three different styles in the wrench.
What were those 15 seconds? Shut the front door, just stop, stop, she listens, she has to stop, she has to make room for us to sound a little good, comparatively, my God, what the hell, no, bring me home every day, peace, hey, yeah , oh, myself, you know it first. Totally off topic, but does anyone have any Star Trek fans? His eye decoration things remind you of deep space trill nine. Is anyone getting vibes from Jedsia Dex? Not only me. She's fine, great anyway. One thing I really admire about opera singers. and classical singers is that wherever they are, their voice is very present when they sing softly, you know, with a little bit of controlled breathing, like a lower tempo, a lower vocal compression, um, their voice it's very present, no I don't feel like it's disappearing um when they're singing just when they're singing when when they get close to those belts their voice is always there, sometimes we hear singers who have their comfort zone clear and then They have their place where they sound quite okay, but you can tell it's not them, like I don't know what their rank is here.
I think probably easily three octaves, probably more. And, of course, if we include things like the whistle register. and subharmonics we can have crazy ranges, true, but what I mean is that she feels comfortable and in control wherever she is and her voice is always present and authoritative. She has an air of confidence even when she is reserved. in charge of this song and I think that's perfect, that's perfect, but she doesn't dominate the song either, sometimes when we listen to symphonic metal, the singer just does glissando and portamento and you know, legato all over the place, it's like these . sometimes I long for me about dramatic techniques that are done all the time just wandering over the song but not here not here she's um she's guiding this song she's the captain of the ship damn box oh oh yeah, seriously, it first things first I love that the bassist had a crown on his base camp like they came down from Mount Olympus, they came down from Asgard and they were fine chilling with us regular people, like he had this beautiful setting with this beautiful lighting and everyone is dressed perfectly dressed, they look amazing corona, humble beer for a humble man, I like that, um wow, okay, so yeah, I get it, I get it, I see why people love Nightwish and Love Floor.
So much, um, I couldn't even think of anything negative to say or constructive to say, part of that is because this isn't my localization school, but another part of it is just because it was amazing, right, um, the whole song had such story, such an epic feeling and she did exactly what was needed at exactly the right moment, um, amazing, amazing conclusions to this video it's amazing, um and I really like it, even for us metal

vocalist

s, even for us, people that everything we do is like guttural. and in high school, which is fine, by the way, that's a lot of what I do well, never underestimate, never underestimate, working on your vocals in clean singing, right, get yourself a guitar, get yourself a piano or a little keyboard electronic like me. right, it doesn't even have to be fancy, I think mine was $60 on Amazon, play with those vowels, play with your teeth, your tongue, your jaw, find where that vowel really opens up and feels most comfortable, but anyway my DSLR only lets me record for so long and we're getting close to that so again wowzers if you enjoyed the video if you liked the content feel free to like share and subscribe it really helps with the algorithm again.
We have an amazing discord through our patreon. With tons of fun people, we have some Nightwish fans there so they'll be happy to talk to you, but feel free to visit us on Patreon if you want to help us make more of these videos and if you want. They are interested in vocal training for more metal and rock styles. Check out some of my other videos. I have tons of students all over the world.
