Mar 29, 2024
One of the

most

scenic

hike

s we've found in Waimea Canyon so far is actually an unofficial

hike

and is called the Khalipa Ridge Trail. You can find the trailhead at the Kalalau Valley Lookout parking lot, which is a decent-sized parking lot, but you may want to. so get there early to make sure you find a parking spot from the lookout you can get a nice view of the valley and you can actually see where you are going if you are looking down the valley. The trailhead is around the fence to your left, although this hike is just a nine mile round trip, it has a 610 foot elevation gain and that's it on the way back, so be prepared to do exercise.

One thing that's amazing about this hike is how the views continue to get better. and the better the deeper you go into the valley, as tempting as it may be to get close to the edge to take that perfect selfie, be careful because it is several thousand feet deep. Many sections of this trail are considered intermediate in good conditions and difficult in bad. conditions I wouldn't even recommend attempting this trail if it had rained recently, the mud would make this trail extremely dangerous. I think it goes without saying that really good walking shoes are recommended for this hike.

This last section is definitely not for the faint of heart, it crosses the top of a very narrow Ridgeline with huge drops on either side. We weren't even planning on doing this section, but a local approached us and said it's not that scary and the view on the other side is really nice, so we did it, although the fear factor may be debatable. He definitely got it right about the view across the

ridge
