Initially, the announcers thought that Roberson had simply slipped on a little water or a little sweat on the court, but in reality it was the rupture of the tendon that caused him to lose control and fall on his back every time he hits Laying on his back here on the ground, you can see that there is certainly some kind of defect here in his knee where this is his kneecap and it's basically higher up on his leg than it should be because of that tendon rupture, we can even see it. in slower motion as he goes up for this alley-oop, you can see. right type while pushing with the left knee is when that tendon ruptures and when it is in the air you can see here how there is that type of defect under the kneecap that means where that tendon had ruptured, the patellar tendon normally ruptures every time the knee is flexed and then you have a strong contraction, so this is when Roberson pushes the contraction of the quadriceps muscles, which imparts that force through the quadriceps tendon and then into the patellar tendon and ultimately , leads to rupture of the patellar tendon. anatomy here we need to understand the difference between the quadriceps tendon and the patellar tendon the quadriceps tendon connects the muscles of the quadriceps groups with the kneecap and then the patellar tendon connects the kneecap with the tibia between these two tendons a rupture of the patellar tendon quadriceps is more likely than a patellar tendon rupture.

Remember this is what happened to Indiana Pacers guard Victorola Depot. He had a quadriceps tendon rupture and if we look at the two pictures here of the injuries, you can see the difference in the type of location. that defect is in the leg with Victor Oladipo we can see a kind of indentation that is above his kneecap in the area where the quadriceps tendon ruptured, unlike Roberson we can see how the kneecap is pulled up and there is a kind from this. defect in where the patellar tendon would live, the patellar tendon can certainly rupture in someone who has previously been healthy, but there is definitely some concern that whatever tendinitis Roberson was dealing with meant there was some irritation or possibly more chronic damage. in that patellar tendon this can weaken the tendon and make it more susceptible to injury and could play a role here in how this injury occurred.

Patellar tendon tears can occur in three different places, the most common being an avulsion injury in which the tendon basically tears off a piece of the kneecap. As it tears, there may be a tear in the midsubstance or middle part of the tendon or you may have a tear where a piece of bone is ejected from the tibia. We don't know what type of tear Roberson had and depending on the type of tear that would influence the type of surgical repair he underwent, although certainly Andre Roberson's knee injury is a rather complicated and confusing story, there is nothing difficult To understand about the current sponsor, audible remains the world's leading provider of audiobooks and audiobooks. word entertainment with over thousands of titles to choose from and my personal recommendation, but what I like most about them right now is how they continue to push the boundaries and offer even more benefits based on the current times we live in.

Thanks again to audible for sponsoring and supporting this video. Let's go back to learn more about Andre Roberson's knee injury before delving into what happened in In the two years since the injury, it is important to understand how serious a patellar tendon rupture is for an athlete. A 2018 study from the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine looked at 13 patellar tendon ruptures that occurred between 1999 and 2015. They found that 25 of these athletes never actually returned to their sport and in the NFL it's even worse with one study showing that half of the players who have this injury never return to the field, so from the beginning this is a very serious injury, very important and with that severity.
An injury leads to more opportunities for complications and a less optimal outcome. Now the first deviation from normal recovery occurred just four months after Roberson's initial surgery. They did arthroscopic surgery where they put those little cameras inside the knee with different tools and we're proactive. When trying to treat something called synovitis, the synovial membrane is this type of thin membrane that provides a lining around the knee joint, so in this procedure what they probably did was go in and cut away some of that synovial membrane that was swollen and potentially causing some symptoms, but still, Thunder was optimistic that his recovery was still on its way smoothly, indeed, everything was in rhythm for a comeback.
He was playing at the training ground. We got all these optimistic reports about him returning to scrimmages, but then, unfortunately, in October he struggled. Another setback and he had to undergo a procedure to relieve some irritation from the sutures from his original repair. This is another thing that is not expected to happen every time someone undergoes this surgery. It is not common for these sutures to cause long-term problems. These sutures do not. absorb and therefore depending on where they are located, depending on whether they become loose in a certain place, it is possible that it could cause some irritation, specifically if it was in a place where it gets pinched or stuck between the kneecap and the other structures .
Unfortunately, this set him back another two months and then when he was returning to practice, he even said he felt 85-90 recovered before going up to dunk, felt a pop in his knee and ended up having an avulsion fracture. Evulsion fracture is a fancy term for when a tendon or ligament basically tears a piece of bone away from the structure it was anchored to, because we have all kinds of different ligaments and tendons in the knee, you can have a lot of different specific types . locations for an avulsion fracture unfortunately we don't know what specific type of avulsion fracture you had, but these can involve the lcl, mcl, acl, pcl, the different tendons of the muscles that attach around the knee and even in the kneecap itself, so there is a wide range of possibilities as to what this avulsion fracture could have been and, if we knew, we could provide more clarity on what was happening with this whole recovery process at the start of the 2019 season- 2020, we saw this constant coming and going of updates again.
That sounded optimistic, as if Roberson would return before those signs fell. Roberson eventually left Oklahoma City to continue his rehab elsewhere to basically get a new scene and kind of a new perspective on everything that was going on. He's been relatively quiet lately. Roberson's front but of course we recently saw confirmation that he's with Thunder Down at Disney and we've seen optimistic reports about his involvement in the practice, so it certainly seems possible that we're gearing up for Andre Roberson's actual return . It's impossible to point out

anything

specific that happened or blame anywhere for his lengthy recovery, as I said, an injury like this is truly devastating and very difficult to recover from, even if there are no complications or recovery challenges along the way. but when you start adding things like synovitis and inflammation, irritating sutures, then you have an avulsion fracture with each of these subsequent injuries, it's going to be even harder for him to overcome them and also gain that confidence to really push himself and try. things with his knee, I think he can come back and have a good continuation of his career, yes of course, but with each setback and with each delay in his return, that becomes even more difficult, but we will see what happens when he returns.
More consistent practice and more consistent workload and I just have to see how he responds, that's it for the video, although everyone, as always, thanks for watching, let me know any questions or comments you have below and until next time, see you later, bye.
