Secret Weapon Against the Sicilian Defense

Mar 23, 2024
About four months ago I posted a video on YouTube about this wild new tactic you can play against the Sicilian

defense

called the beaver tactic and since then I've been wondering if it's really possible to apply the principles of this tactic to others. variations within the Sicilian and this is what we are going to explore now in a three part series which is a beaver trilogy, if you will, of videos starting with this video here, video number one which will look at some of the theory of this new another beaver gambit and then we're going to take a look at some really very wild stuff so this video will be what you need before you have fun and then the next two videos will be just a bunch of dessert part two will feature this really crazy double piece sacrifice you didn't do this on purpose did you?

This is space is a great tactic oh double tactic oh space is great double tactic oh wait oh no wait oh no this is interesting oh no, part three will feature one of the craziest pawn structures you've ever seen in the game of chess, yes, yes, yes, look at this pawn structure, look at this, where else will you find this pawn structure and then a double pawn range? that you can play with the white pieces and an extra healthy dose of humiliation because maybe I just remembered why I haven't posted this video in over four months.

More Interesting Facts About,

secret weapon against the sicilian defense...

I may have spent three full days creating a five-second trick that totally failed live. on Twitch, but before we can get into any of that and see what happens in part three, we have to get into the theory right now and get up to speed on what the beaver tactic is, so I apologize in advance if There is some noise coming directly above me. Looks like the schwanz kids are having a great time today, they're running around having a really fun time and hopefully we'll be able to have a really fun time exploring this new

weapon

against the Sicilians, but before we can dive deep into this new beaver. gambit I actually want to take a moment to talk about the original beaver gambits that occurred after e4 c5 knight f3 and here the original idea was to play something special and creative against e6 Sicilians where Black is probably hoping for a scam or a time on one of this kind of position, but I've been playing the pawn on c3 with the obvious idea that I just want to play the pawn on d4 and Black will have to respond to this with d5 or a knight on f6.
secret weapon against the sicilian defense
These are kind. of the critical ways to challenge our center before we have time to continue building with d4 and in particular Black should spend some time attacking our e-pawn and I have some

weapon

s in mind if he plays the pawn on d5 but this will have to wait a moment because we are going to focus on the knight to f6 where after e5 the knight to d5 here comes the pawn of the beaver gambit to b4 and this type of incarnation like the wing gambit has this idea that we are going to be giving away a b-pawn to establish a firm center, so we capture the b-pawn, follow up with c4 and play the pawn on d4 and for some reason this has been giving me a lot of points, there's just one really easy trap in this. opening and I guess four of the last five starting players I've played have fallen into this, so basically a lot of really strong players just go straight for the knight to b6 which is the wrong square, the knight needs to go to c7 and this has All have been previously explored.
secret weapon against the sicilian defense
I'll leave a link in the description if you want to see the original video with a lot more analysis, but essentially you play d4 and whatever Black plays d6 d5 literally doesn't matter either way. and if they back out with the bishop or the queen it doesn't matter, we hit it with this fork right away and for some reason I don't know the psychology behind it, but a lot of really strong players just make a mistake. in this and White gets a winning position right from the opening so of course there is more to this and I encourage you to watch that video at some point but it made me wonder if we can actually play this against other Sicilians and in particular. against players who play knight to c6, what if here we play exactly the same idea and here in the knight to c6, maybe the opponent is looking for a classic

sicilian

, maybe a sveshnikov of one of these guys, but what if Do we play exactly the same way? and then of course d5 is a very normal move for black that might get some cover at some point we have some crazy ideas but for now knight to f6 if this meets e5 knight d5 b4 what is going on exactly here and uh this?
It was something that intrigued me and I actually played one of these streams where I try out these new ideas with my viewers, so I'm going to show you a little bit of the way this three-part series is basically going to work. of theory, this is just going to be kind of a theory video, then I'm going to show you a game that I played against a real viewer on Twitch where we actually played quite a bit of theory and by theory what I really mean is that there are basically no games in the base of data, the theory is simply to follow the main lines generated by the chess engines, but what is happening here after we capture, we play the pawn on c4 and here is a kind of an improved idea for Black, for what our opponents can now very safely go back to b6 and the idea is that we just don't have this branching trick in the position where they can play d6, they can play d5, eh, whatever, and now suddenly there's Ya It's not this branching trick, but before we get into it I guess you could say this is the main line.
It is worth noting that opponents could still decide to put the knight back on c7. It seems a bit restrictive. It's much rarer. I think it's actually possibly been played once and you won't face it very often, but I think it's interesting to get some ideas from the computer about how this position would be played now, obviously, this. We have this particular camp, we have kids, they are making some noise up there, this particular tactic is a bit iffy, right, because you sacrifice a pawn, but we have this whole center and this gives us opportunities on all sides of the board .
So in this position, just to explore a little bit, Black could try again to challenge our center, because if Black really does nothing, we could be threatening to blow them out of the water and destroy them in the center right away, but after d6. or d5 literally doesn't matter, we're going to play the exact same style and capture here. The computer has a very clear preference on how Black should recover the game in the database that starts with the queen and takes d6, so I. I want to explore it and then we'll go back and look at what kind of computer the computer suggests, but just to get an idea of what a position would look like if they go back to their queen, here we can already see. things that are starting to be outlined, white actually has a really complicated move, I mean it's simple, I guess if you see the idea, but one move that we would like to play here with the white pieces is d5, we want to just run this knight . off the board, but if we just play d5, you know, there will just be a knight on e5 and Black really shouldn't have any problems, so there is already a very clever move, there is a bishop on b2, uh, I just insist that maybe I'll play d5 next and you might get into some trouble now that the only human play has moved the bishop to g4, which is potentially already a small mistake leading to a very difficult position for Black to play if you were a computer , you would just play the pawn on e6 and the line is like this, we would just develop our things where we will be down, we will get a kind of structure of these where both sides will castle.
White has more space in the center. and it actually gives White a very small advantage in a position like this, so we have a lot of potential to make some kind of kingside attack and we're a little calm and the real problem for Black is if he just checks out. One look at pieces like this, they just don't belong where they are, so black still has some issues to work out. White has no problem other than the fact that you are depressed, so you could call this a very serious problem, but otherwise the position looks very good and so good that the computer even thinks this is a little better for white, but the only game seen from this position was bishop to g4 and here in this position we saw d5, this was nice. of the idea, um, white decided to attack the queen and only then play the knight to e5 and here in the game white played the queen to e3, which is probably fine, there are many queen moves that are potentially good , but the computer comes up with a very good plan here that I think gives you a very, very good position and it's not that easy to see, but queen to e2 is actually a super powerful move that forces black to find essentially a single move that is very unlikely to be played in this position and uh part of the problem is whether this knight moves if it retreats, which we will actually look at briefly uh suddenly our bishop becomes much stronger by looking at this g-pawn and this guy is actually going to be very strong if we can put him here on g2 so this is why the computer says you have to play f6 and black is holding there um I don't think he's having a good time but he'll hold if you play f6 but knight for g6 I think you can assume that could be a very normal reasonable human move, but the problem is that we are going to put this bishop on g2, so the queen will actually make a lot of sense on e2, it is currently blocking our bishop , but it is not like that. it's a big problem and we will be castled and this knight could get to e5 uh e4 sorry, but the biggest problem is what exactly black is going to do.
It will never be easy to play e6 and develop this bishop. without hanging a pawn and you could face a small attack if you decide to go to the queen side, so for example I think we can take a quick look at a computer line that is knight to d2 and the way this it's already something like plus two, basically winning for white e6 won't threaten anything with g3 if black decides to castle, I mean you can imagine it's not that easy to take out this bishop and do anything else, um. castle the bishop on g2, basically, pretty soon we'll be able to play any knight on e4, we'll be able to castle and I don't know, no, I don't look at this king and think he's going to be the safest guy in the long run and there's some computer analysis. that get out of hand, but essentially you'll get a very good, nice position where the black king will never be as safe as the white king and this bishop is going to The rest of the game has a hard time developing, so I think we can conclude the analysis here because the computer moves get a little weird after that, but I thought it was a cool idea from White's point of view.
It's a very easy and simple setup, basically if you can play g3 bishop g2 knight d2 castle you get a good position, but that's okay, the c7 knight will be a much rarer option, you're not going to face this one too much So once again just to remind you how we got here. I feel like it's something important. I don't want to lose anyone. Here we go, this is our position after b4 and after c4, the knight to b6 is definitely, I guess the main line. There aren't too many, there are about a dozen human games from this position.
I'm actually looking at this with the mega database. There is a game that has been played from this position, but online. Just having played with a few people, this seems to be the well-established core game. knight line to b6 and okay, then obviously we are going to play the pawn on d4, this was our original idea and inevitably they will want to do something because we are really pressing, we are getting very serious here, so Black will play either both. d6 or d5 and here there is actually a little difference, um d6 is clearly the only move here d5 actually gets Black into a lot of trouble because here we don't have to recapture, we can and this could be fine for White. um it will definitely transpose to the line where if Black had played d6 and we just recaptured, we'll get this line, but after d5 there's a little bit of a problem for Black and it's a move that we're going to make.
I'll be exploring in the second video. I'll explain a little bit about how we got there, but you can get this amazing pawn structure after the pawn on c5 where Black basically has to flee, but if he plays knight on c4, which is what I faced in one of my games that you'll see coming up, that's how you get the fantastic pawn structure that you get here and you play d5 so there will be more of this to come but suffice it to say that white is practically winning in this position um you are absolutely crushing black and we will see this in a video below, so essentially you have to go back and uh, I don't know what to say here, I'll let you know that, actually, there's talking about this now I was just trying to determine in myown mind if we should talk about this now or if I should wait for the second video, but it's so good that I have to share some of this with you, I'll leave it.
You know, if you play e6 and play knight on g5, you will win a lot of games very quickly. This is not correct for White, but I think I have won every game I have played with this. In some ways, it's not like that. Black won't care even if you throw h4h5, he'll just play as g6, get this guy out somehow, find a square for this guy, handle the king this way, computers. They won't care, they'll think this is worse for you like white. I'll let you know you'll win. You will win a lot of games quickly, but I think you can play even better.
There is no reason to go for the e6 line. in this position because you actually have another incredible trap and it is with this idea of playing the pawn on a3 in this exact position, so if you look at this from Black's point of view, the biggest problem is what do you do with this bishop in f8. Are you going to play e6? Try to develop this way and castle or you're going to play g6 and potentially always have to be on the lookout for e6 stuff coming. What are you going to do with this pawn?
So, there are a couple of different things going on. our opponents actually have to juggle and the best move for black is to play e6, but first let's look at a couple of mistakes and get an idea of some of the interesting tactics and traps that exist, the main idea behind all of this. they are all the same trap if they recover a3, you recapture it with a knight and the point is that if ever e6 this square is going to be very tender, the d6 square is where we want to get our knight, for example, if a6, which in It doesn't really stop us from going here, we can just keep developing and if we ever e6 boop we jump and if that knight gets to d6 it basically goes out for black this will be a big threat so this is one of the underlying positional strategic ideas , I guess this is not really a tactic, it's like a strategic idea in the position for White.
Basically, we are waiting, we want to recover with the knight and if we ever want to jump to e6. the d6 square, but there is another interesting tactic, let's say that black does not recover, of course, let's say that black plays something like g6, now we are going to recover on b4 and something like that happened in many games that I played in the broadcast in which you'll see a lot of these games, people for some reason didn't recapture this b-pawn in positions like this, not everyone played g6, but in a position like this, black has to take this. pawn if they don't, well, just if we manage to keep this b-pawn, we're not even a pawn down, we have a big space advantage and we should be able to win cleanly, but if they take here, look at this trap.
This one is really cool and you can start it two different ways, but essentially at some point we're going to kick the horse. You can start with the bishop on b5. You can start with the bishop on d2, but the idea is that after this knight it jumps. back we want to play bishop to d2 and the idea is that if black is not careful we will win here on the spot so if bishop to g7 now we have a really cool little tactic so you can pause your video if you want. try to figure this out on your own um but we have a way to gain a lot of material here and it starts with removing this knight and we're going to understand why the bishop is on d2 now because after this we'll get the bishop back on a5 and oh no , the queen is basically suffocated here by all her own pieces, so there is no way to rescue the queen.
You can try to ride the knight on b6, but here you can recapture, you can recapture either way. I like to exploit the pin in column a. and yes, black is on fire here, so something like this is very possible and it is the same reason, if instead black decides here, now or later, at some point to play e6, we can get a very similar position after taking the knight, take b4. um, let's start with the d2 bishop this time and after they come back we can play the bishop to b5. This is pretty much the same idea where if Black plays a little too casually, it's the same idea that blocks a queen square, so here I can just take this knight, play bishop to a5 again and boom, let's go. to gain a little more material, so this is one of the ideas that black should be aware of and be careful about, but it could be a very nasty trap so yeah, I mean this is like saying it's not not easy to play this with black.
I think we'll leave the theoretical discussion here for now, let me know if you have any questions in the comments. And maybe I can answer some of them, but let's look at a game where we got a position very similar to this and I was able to. It was one of those slow, build-up wins, so we'll review this. game and then we'll see all the dramatic and exciting stuff in parts two or three so make sure you're subscribed to the channel so you know when it's coming out but yeah I hope you guys enjoy this first game so we got a game grab geo michael , let's see what we can do here and yes, the theory that comes in this could very well be a beaver and we hope to test the new beaver, so this will be the new knight beaver for c6 is the line that we hope to test, but really if it plays something else, I guess we'll take it from there, yeah the c6 knight is fine and now the f6 knight is the second most popular move, d5 is also a move but the f6 knight will lead to a beaver guy. gambit and this will be the first time we're testing it against a viewer so these streams are usually pretty fun as they go, viewers start to think of new ideas as we go but there are some pitfalls and dangers for blacks , TRUE? outside the opening but again like I said this is kind of an improvement over the original beaver from the black point of view I think the white is a little worse but at least it's dangerous and tricky so we'll see what's going on. now you're on your own and we'll see what grub chio comes up with you've literally never played a

sicilian

but you're happy to lose some rating points that's the attitude uh i think it's fun to just step out of your comfort zone just a little sometimes and if you haven't played an opening, especially one this big, i feel like you should really play every opening a little bit because there are structures and plans in the sicilian you're on. missing out if you don't know how to hydrate oh well i have some tea thanks tim this is one of the big differences between this and the original beaver tactic is that the b6 knight is a perfectly good move whereas in the original beaver where this pawn is already on e6, this knight needs to go to the c7 square and from here this knight can actually be quite useful, eh, looking at the c4-pawn, so sometimes black clusters on this c-pawn, something that I need to be a little. cautious with white haven't tried the new puzzle storm the new chess uh thing uh haven't tried it yet this is actually the best move and I don't think anyone has ever played it in leech, although there are a couple of ideas uh which one we should explore which one we should explore uh well I'm going to take here I think this is a correct way of playing and a3 so I'm going for the correct way of playing with White's tricks later on I might need a beaver's comb it's okay, okay, okay, this is a good move and now what's strange is that very often the best thing for white is to put this guy on the e2 square because this bishop on g4 is actually nice.
It's an annoying idea if I put this bishop on d3. The bishop on g4 is usually pretty decent for Black. Nice try. Nice try. You can't call me about job after job. Busy man. I have to transmit for the people. Hey, I'm Brian. What's happening? And if. It's very normal, very often I will just be on top. This is also a very good move. The opponent is playing well. What is the problem here? Okay, okay, so there's a girl coming up the stairs and she's dragging something really hard, really hard. on the other side of my apartment, I'm sure you guys can't hear it, but it's very loud, okay, wow, I think this is all still some kind of preparation, although this feels like black is making the best moves, taking their time and that's That's the point, uh, the biggest thing in my favor is that if I'm already ready for these positions, at least it will take the opponent a little bit of time to find something good, at least that's the hope.
It's been crazy. month for me too, um, every day, I don't know why it's not like, I guess, January. I guess it's normally a pretty busy month for me, but it's been unusually busy, bleeding toast, finally catching a transmission. It's good that you're glad you could. to achieve it so I got my pawn back which actually makes me very happy and I'm with this guy and you know I also have the c3 knight coming in so this feels good, the center here could be attacked, my deep seems safe enough At some point , even if I somehow can't win this pawn that I'm going to try to take with a knight, I think I'd rather take with a knight than with a queen.
I also have ideas of just going through the queen side. long term, so it feels very nice now that I got the pawn back. I'm doing challenges for viewers. We are trying the new one. I can take this one too. The new beaver gambit. Oh I could take a knight and put my knight right here man there are so many good options though yeah I'm going to take here and try to set this knight up on d6, taking the bishop too is probably fine and now it's falling apart because it lost this pawn b, the d-pawn is Still under fire, the jump from the knight to d6 seems to have gone very well and I have more space on this side, so it's good if I can make my way through here.
Just looking at the pawn structure is really interesting because it's like I'm the one who gets all the extra space on the queen side, so it's kind of like where Black is supposed to play, if they're supposed to go at all. three against three on the king side or what is it supposed to do, so I think this is actually the opening. it's a little difficult because it's not easy suggested i love all your wild tactics jonathan hey thanks j beast with the best for two months very cool i appreciate it um and this beaver i tell you, he's been a great point scorer for me i'm a believer in the beaver, that's how it has been, only that's the

secret

to increasing your rating is to play with the beaver, okay, again, great pin, so you have to be careful.
I could just take the pawn, but maybe I'll take the bishop and then take this path, it's a very good night, but these pawns are also very good, so I think I'll take this path, just take the bishop, it leads to this kind of come back with my rook, uh, a couple of pawns up and these two are incredibly beautiful. The passed pawns are still very solid, this pawn is still under attack, so I guess now is probably the right time to double check and make sure we're not hanging anything. We have a lot of time and, yes, now we have many, many.
Passed pawns, a lot of rooks hanging and uh, and that's the story of the beaver, the opponent really played very, very well in the opening, so very good game to catch Geo, who played very well, uh, he actually played like the computer for all these movements. so all this is like a perfect game this is perfect uh I think even here I think all this was preparation um and then here I think you are destined to retire it um yes, you have to play the knight takes b4 yes You let this pawn live, it's very dangerous, so you have to take it although I'm going to buy a little time, okay four, I don't know if I would have played it.
Queen b3 seems pretty normal to me, but somehow I'm going to gain some kind of initiative on the queen side and I'm a pawn down, but in a sense it's like a benko. Whenever you do these gambits like b4 a3, you can always say "hey, yo." I got some bench compensation here, but yeah, if I get this pawn to live, my play on the queen side is obviously very, very strong, very good play, although you played the opening really very well, for no, obviously, no. know it or be very prepared for it. awesome first presentation
