I Own A Veloster N And Here's What I Think Of The Mk8 VW GTI

Mar 18, 2024
Hello, how are you doing? Welcome everyone to change lanes. My name is Hansen. Thanks for tuning in to the video. For this one, I'm sitting in the 2022 Volkswagen GTI. I just finished filming the formal review of this car, so if you want to check it out. that video, click the link up

here

, but I

think

I want to give this car another chance and basically compare it to my own 2020 hyundai

veloster

n because if you look at both cars, they are very similar, they are both 2 liter turbocharged engines. Both are front-wheel drive cars. They are both hatchbacks and both depend on the grade you choose for the gti.

They have a similar price. This is the highway version and comes in six. gear manual, so this one is about 39,000 after destination. You can also get them in the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, so like the Veloster end, you can also get an eight-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, very similar and I want to compare. These cars, you know between the look of the interior, the quality and the driving experience, to tell you which one, in my opinion, is the best car. Now let's start with the Mark 8 GTI first. This is a new generation. Everything has improved. The appearance. It's been redesigned, it looks amazing again.

More Interesting Facts About,

i own a veloster n and here s what i think of the mk8 vw gti...

More details in my other video and also on the interior, it has been completely redesigned. If you got into a Mark 7 Gti and got into this one, you would

think

it was a much more expensive car because of all these things. it looks a lot more premium and it's really all about the look, it looks fantastic, it looks modern, but when you start using some of the things, like some of the user interfaces

here

, it's a bit horrible, you'll probably see a lot video reviews where people complain about the The UI here is true, the touch sensitive haptic feedback is not great, the steering wheel buttons here are not great, I prefer using physical buttons and

what

I don't like is that when I If you hold it in certain places, you might accidentally brush against certain things and hit certain things that you didn't mean to, but if you don't focus on the negative UI, I think this is the best GTI Volkswagen has ever made, so with that being said, let's get down to it.
i own a veloster n and here s what i think of the mk8 vw gti
Get going and take this for a spin. I have the six speed manual here and I'm very happy to have it. They also come with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and that's a much quicker car than this one, but it's pretty snowy. so I'm going to take it a little easy and plus this thing comes equipped with winter tires. The side of the Veloster I drive also has winter tires that I put on myself, so that's good, we're going to have a little bit of traction, as always, never drive summer tires in these conditions because it's just not a good idea, But with that said, let's get started.
i own a veloster n and here s what i think of the mk8 vw gti
The first thing I noticed about the gearbox here is that I love the manual transmission and I really like the second one. I'm still in second gear, I'm going around 65, this gear is very very high meaning if you're automatically cruising depending on the course you might not even have to shift gears so high gear is really Nice, the velociran is slightly different and you'll see that in the second part of the video, but so far the driving experience is good, this is a great daily driver. This thing has dcc or dynamic chassis control. I think you can adjust the suspension damping anyway.
This car I can't change it now because I'm on the move, but you can change it from a comfortable setting to a sporty setting so far, when the roads are good, it's not that bad, but if it's a little bit bumpy, you'll get a little punished here, It feels a little stiff, which you know, I don't mind, because I prefer to have a stiffer chassis so that your handling performance increases. Now, coming to the engine, this makes more power. above the seven mark, I think it has 14 or 15 more horsepower and 13 more pound-feet of torque compared to the older engine.
It's a small knock, but it's noticeable and makes this car much more fun to drive, much more usable. Can't. I think a couple of years ago this car was only making about 200 210 horsepower and now it's at 241 so it's not quite into the old golf r territory but it's getting there and when you compare it to the

veloster

what

's wrong with it. 275 horsepower, so this is very close to that and you know, if you look at the curb weight of very similar cars, now back to the driving experience, the steering is excellent, it also has one of those electronic power steering , so you can also adjust it. but I like the lightness of it all, you could increase the damping a little to get that sportier feel, but I like the responsiveness of the steering, you feel like you are in tune with the car and the road, I like that the Veloster is very similar.
Now, the exhaust on this car is not very good. I prefer to be a little loud if you are in sport mode. Let me change the driving mode for a second. If you go to sport mode, you can hear it's a little more guttural. aggressive and if you go in third or fourth gear or, sorry, three to four thousand rpm, you might hear that slight pop pop in the rear, you'll hear it more with the windows down, but I'm going to keep the windows up for now. more cabin sound here, I don't really care because almost every car does it, you'll find the Veloster's end does it too, but I wish the exhaust sounded a little more aggressive on this one. car, but yeah, when going through these back roads the gti feels planted, you know, I don't go too fast behind on these roads because the weather isn't that great, but some cars just have this numb steering feel, but this one , You know?
You feel connected to the road and I love that about this car. Now let's talk about pricing for a second because this is the highway. Now the highway comes with all the amenities. You know, it's got the light bar on the front, it's got LED lighting. There's a lot of ambient lighting everywhere, which is really cool, you know, ambient lighting doesn't add horsepower, but it does improve the driving experience and I like how you can personalize your car that way. I'm currently in this desire mood and I can change it to eternity and you get this green or infinity theme, it's like a sportier, fiery, more lively theme, anyway, you can change those things on the fly which is cool , but with the highway setting.
You know you have heated seats, not only in the front but also in the rear, so it's great for everyday driving and of course you have a fully digital instrument cluster, which you can actually buy in the version s. It's amazing and you know that makes the car look a lot more expensive, but if you go down to the SE trim, I think it's around 34,000, so it's a little bit more expensive than the Veloster. You know, that's probably the sweet spot, that's the GTI I would choose. I recommend it because it still has the heated front seats, it has that light bar in the front, it has LED lighting and I think you could get cloth seats with that, which I actually prefer cloth seats because it looks more interesting, while which on this one I have leather seats, it looks great, but I prefer that pattern that you can find on the cloth seats, it's the more traditional gti and then the basic gti, which is the s that starts at 29,000 for the manual and you know which is actually cheaper than the veloster end, so that's the cheapest option, let's go back to driving for a second.
The turbocharger here simply makes this car much more fun to drive. Turbo lag is minimal. The brakes are really good if you like autocross. This is a great autocross weapon. When I was autocrossing I saw a lot of these guys and this one is a nice upgrade and I'm curious how this will rate compared to the Mark 7 GTI because it makes more power and I'm also curious how the manual works. The transmission will be rated against the dual clutch version because the dual clutch gearbox version is faster, but this is a delight, I love driving this car, if you are thinking of buying it as a daily driver, go for it, you know ?
This is great and on the weekends you can take it to the track or you can do an automatic crossover or whatever, but I really like this car and it looks amazing inside and out, but with that being said, let's move on to the end of the Veloster. and let's see how it drives well so now we're on to the 2020 hyundai veloster n and first let's quickly talk about the design because obviously this is a three door hatchback it's a unique car in the sense that it's the only three door car You could buy it and, uh, the three-door look really isn't a big deal to me, obviously it's less convenient than having an actual fourth door.
I like the look of the car from the left side because it gives it that coupe look. and that's the only thing really missing from the volkswagen gti line is that there is no more two door hatchback look, i think they stopped selling it around 2017, but it looks smart, the reason i bought this veloster n is because i thought which was the civic type r. It looked too crazy and um compared to the volkswagen gti this thing looks pretty crazy it has special red accent pieces around it it has a crazier looking spoiler and the side skirt also looks more aggressive and the rear diffuser is also gone It looks very racey, so if I'm trying to keep a lower profile then the Volkswagen GTI is probably the card you should get, but the Veloster end looks a lot more fun now on the inside.
This is more fantastic plastic here, but the only thing I like is that there are physical buttons and dials here like in a traditional car and I like that a lot more because it's much easier to use and the user infotainment system in this thing is the older style if you look at the newer Hyundais and I will. link to some videos up here but if you look at Hyundai's new infotainment system it looks slicker whereas with this one there's really no problem with this one it's a bit slower but it works the instrument cluster also has a more traditional look. it has two gauges on the left right speedometer and an electronic display right in the center, it doesn't look as premium as the gti so one notch less for the veloster n in the interior department too, let's talk about pricing real quick because i bought this car in 2020 and bought it for 29,000.
This is the one with the performance package. The price has changed a lot. You can't get it that cheap anymore for the 2022 model year. The end of the Veloster has just one finish. and starts at 32,500 and comes with the manual transmission. You could pay a little more to get the eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. What is the price difference between that and this one? I have another video that explains everything you get. and you can see it here, but basically there are a lot more safety systems on the ends of the newer Veloster and also the seats are a lot better on the newer one.
Things like blind spot monitoring, you can see here. I don't have blind spot monitoring. system um and then like adaptive cruise control that newer car has all that vehicle intelligence this one is much more basic but mechanically speaking you still have the same cool things, you have the electronic limited slip differential, you have the turbocharged 2 liter engine, you have the best engine tuning to give you that 275 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, of course, if you opt for the dual-clutch transmission, which is even faster because there's an overboost feature called smile shift final and that increases the torque I think is another seven percent, so it's a very marginal bump, but it's a really cool feature and that's a really good reason why you should get the DCT instead of the manual.
The newer Veloster ends are still cheaper than the SE trim of the volkswagen gti and it's definitely a lot cheaper than the autobahn model I tested in this video because it's 39k so price wise the veloster n is still a bargain now that you can find one of these things at msrp, I know I'm living in very strange times because the resale value of my car, which is a 2020 model with the high performance package, has the amount of miles I have now, which is surprisingly still under 5000 miles, because I can't drive them. cars very often because I drive all different cars but the price of this car is probably six to seven thousand dollars more expensive than when I bought it and that seems to be the case with performance cars across the board that you're just paying. much more just because the supply is very low but I think once things normalize a little more I don't really know what's going to happen but anyway price wise it's still cheaper than the volkswagen gti, so it's a win for vloster's end.
With that said, let's get going because I really want to drive this thing because it's only five grand.miles. I don't really get to drive my own car very often, so let's go ahead and go, so, um, first one. The thing is, there are different driving modes in this car, so if you look at the steering wheel, there's this checkered flag button that activates final mode and when you put it in final mode, so many things happen first that you hear that pop-pop crazy. the rear uh it's great and then there's also adaptive suspension here so you can or adaptive damping so you can also stiffen the suspension when you put it in final mode it goes to the stiffest setting and unlike the gti from Where does the suspension go? firm to a little less firm in this mode when you go into normal mode it's comfortable and then when you go into final mode it's very uncomfortable this is very stiff but it's great When you try to take corners the handling improves a lot more because of this adaptive damping.
When you go into final mode the throttle response is also sharper and then the exhaust makes those crazy sounds, that's the only thing I really love about the vloster n is the noise, so this thing can simulate all that characteristic anti-lag which basically delays combustion so that it happens slightly outside the cylinders so you can accelerate those gases to spin up the turbo and So when you shift gears it maintains turbo boost so you don't lose as much boost, but yeah, My favorite part of the Veloster n is the exhaust. I haven't touched it at all.
There are very few things that I have modified on this car, the first is the air intake, very basic modification, but um, yeah, I haven't touched the exhaust and I love how, from the factory, it can sound so crazy and then what also what i like is that when you lift off the accelerator and you hear all this hum and the volkswagen gti you hear it very slightly it's more pronounced here and i like it a lot more now as far as the handling goes you know it's a little snowy outside so it's not really I want to push this car. too much, but I think the handling is a little better with the Veloster end, the steering just feels sharper as the turn-in is much more immediate and I feel more connected to the road in the Veloster end compared to the Volkswagen GTI now both cars have winter tires currently and yes you don't drive on the summer tires you get with these cars so the handling isn't as good as it could be but still this car feels fantastic even in winter. tires I have on now let's talk about the gearing for a second, the shifter feels a lot louder at the end of the veloster and I like that the shifter is also positioned a little lower so it feels shorter , it's great because you don't have to go far to change gears, whereas in the volkswagen gti it's a little higher so you can reach it more comfortably, faster I guess, but yes, there's a little more travel in terms of gears i think the volkswagen gti is a little bit more daily driver friendly and also the fact that it's super tall as i mentioned before you could hit almost 70 miles per hour in second gear while in this it maxes out at about 50 miles per hour so again if You're auto cruising you're working a little bit harder here all with the transmission so now let's go down to second gear and go all the way up and you can see the rev limiter is there and I'm on 55 and I have to shift up so the difference in gears on the volkswagen gti is quite big, in my opinion it is easier to use but they are both very fun to drive and I like how they both have dual clutch transmissions and the veloster n has eight speeds. clutch transmission again after having driven that car, I have driven two of those, it feels fantastic and I generally recommend the manual over the automatic and well in this case I still recommend the manual version but the dual clutch version of the veloster n is something like that. a unique twist because there are a ton of other features like gear shift direction and other marketing related things, but the fact that there is a dual clutch transmission allows the engineers to do more amazing things with the tuning, so it could feel the throttle position, how aggressively you're driving, so you can make the shift action more aggressive if needed, because of that and also the overboost function on the dual-clutch end that makes the auto feels very different than the manual transmission, it makes it more like something like it gives you the feeling of this video game when you drive that thing.
I like how with Ingrid Shift it gives you like 20 seconds to generate more power before it has to. something like a top up so basically that's to protect the turbocharger from damage from overheating because you're making more torque or because there's more boost there so I think now it's time to conclude which one do I like better: the volkswagen gti or the veloster I still like the veloster and better because this feels more raw, it reminds me a lot of my old mitsubishi evo 9, this is a front wheel drive car and that is an all wheel drive car of course but two totally different things but The car felt so raw and it was so much fun to drive and this reminds me a lot that this thing has a lot of character, the exhaust sounds so much better, um, I love making this thing make the gunshot sound so I just just like it. puts a big smile on your face, let's do it right now, I mean you can't put a price on that, well you can buy Veloster n and you can do it all the time, ah that feels so cool. and for that reason alone I would choose the veloster n um performance wise, they feel very similar.
I think from zero to 60 times, this is a little bit faster. The curb weight is about the same, so it has a slightly better power-to-weight ratio. it certainly feels more strident with this car while the volkswagen gti feels more refined and that seems to be the theme between these two cars, this veloster n is rougher around the edges, more eager to drive, it feels like there is a little more torque. drive on the veloster end so yes this is the less refined version of the volkswagen gti so if you were a different person looking for other things like a nicer driving experience and a more luxurious interior then the volkswagen gti is the one I would choose.
The veloster n will give you more value for your dollar. I think you will get a better manual transmission. There are plenty of safety features on that too and visually I think the Veloster end looks much better on the inside if you don't like any of them. that haptic feedback you're going to like the buttons and dials here the volkswagen gti just feels and looks like a much more modern car and if that's what you're looking for then you should definitely go for the volkswagen gti the autobahn version is about thirty nine thousand dollars, that's pretty expensive considering I think for another five thousand dollars you can get the golf r and hopefully when I try it I'll be able to do another one of these comparisons because that's when it's now.
Different story because the golf r is another two liter turbocharged engine but that one makes 315 horsepower, has all wheel drive and drift mode so it's hard to spend 40k on a volkswagen gti when i know that. If I spend another 5k I can get that golf r or if I have a budget of less than 35k I can get this one which I think is the best deal there you go I think that's your answer IMO I would go. With the Veloster N I would always choose this one nine times out of ten just because I think it's a much more fun car to drive compared to the Volkswagen in terms of similar fun factor.
If I gave this a 10 out of 10, I think the volkswagen gti is probably like an 8 out of 10. but that's just me, please let me know what you think in the comments below. I'm going to wrap it up right there.
