Backseat DJs: What's Controlling Your Joy? | Flip The Flow | Pastor Steven Furtick

Mar 26, 2024
Look, today I want to preach on joy and I want to get there from a story and then share several scriptures with you. Can I tell you a story? I just bought a new car last year. I drove a Nissan Maxima for ten years before purchasing this one new. car I loved my Nissan Maxima my car before this Nissan Maxima was a Nissan Maxima, that's how much I loved my Nissan Maxima. I maxed out the Maxima and it was very good for me. The only thing I remember happening besides the moment it got cut off. at an intersection was that one day I was driving down the highway a few years ago and my stereo system started doing strange things, it started skipping to different tracks without me telling it and the volume kept going up and down and then I would play it back on. the song I wanted to listen to and he would turn the volume up or down depending on whether it was going both ways without me telling him without me turning the knob and it happened for about 10 or 15 minutes straight one day I was driving and it seemed like the speaker on My car had a life of its own so I thought maybe my Maxima had a demon and then I looked in the back seat and realized it wasn't a demon, it was my daughter who had the center. console down and I never went back there so I didn't realize that all the years I've had this car you can control the volume and skip tracks from there and she was laughing and Graham was there and he was laughing and they were

controlling

something from the back

what

I was trying to deal with from the front and they thought it was really funny and I told him to stop, which is annoying when I found out

what

they were doing two or three minutes later, turn up the volume. and down again there goes track two track three track four again it's on shuffle and I turned around and said I'm telling you to stop.

I don't like it, maybe it was cute the first time for you, but it's really driving me. crazy up here, stop and a few minutes pass and it starts happening again. I took the car out for the third time. I took the car out for the third time on Providence Road. I said: let me explain something to you. I said you are all passengers in this. Maxima I'm the driver, that means I'm the DJ. I can choose what plays on this stereo and the volume because the driver gets to be the DJ. I want to preach to you for about 37 minutes today about Backseat DJs because I suspect that there are some things in

your

life that are being controlled from the

backseat

that are being controlled at a level that you don't realize are being controlled and I think today God is going to use me and trust me.

I studied that joy has become more important to me each year I have been alive. I feel like when I was 20 I only cared about achieving things when I was 30. I've been figuring out what's the point if you don't enjoy it, what's the point in doing something amazing if you're not in a position to appreciate the achievement because you constantly need more and I spent my 20s and maybe early 30s just trying to get more, more, sometimes that meant more popularity, sometimes that meant more impact. Sometimes that meant more influence, sometimes that meant more money, more resources, more friends, more phone numbers, more connections, but lately I've been asking the Lord for more joy and that sent me on a biblical path and I want to include them in that today.

You'll be fine if we talk for a while today about what controls

your

joy. Amen, I'm excited. Do you feel my enthusiasm? James chapter one verses two through four we will start here. I think there are some things that are destroying your joy. you weren't aware of it and James is going to teach us how to develop joy, something very different from discovering joy. Discovering joy means it is waiting somewhere and you have to find it. is waiting for your next professional step. is waiting in your next relationship. is waiting somewhere. It's not now, but James is going to show us something that may be familiar to some of you, but it's very strange if you consider what he's actually saying and I just want to read you those three verses, says James, chapter one. verse two consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds that is not what I was looking for joy by the way it is not what I was praying hoping to ask for believing anyway it is what the Bible says he said consider it is pure I rejoice, my brothers, every time you face trials of various kinds because you know that the test of your faith produces perseverance, may perseverance finish its work so that you are mature and complete and do not lack anything.

I'm glad you specified because the first What I want to mention to you today is that all of these points followed the theme of DJ, so the first is the distinction of joy knowing what it really is, understanding its nature and James helps us do that. that first helping us understand that there are trials of many kinds that is what verse two of the Old King James that Pastor Mickey preached said of said various trials because I have learned that we are not all going through the same thing but we are all going through something and How many know that there are as many different types of tests as there are different drinks at Starbucks as there are different paint colors at Home Depot.
I discovered that there are tests that are associated with many tests that are associated with poverty. I always understood the first because everyone understands that being bankrupt is a battle, but managing resources can, in its own way, test a part of your character that, if you are not prepared to test it, can create much more. problems that financial poverty, in fact, financial wealth can create relational poverty if there is no emotional maturity to help us manage and understand what we have been given. I'm going to preach today. It's true. There are tests for singles. There are tests for married people.
There is evidence. that are associated with loneliness and there are tests that are associated with companionship there are many types of tests there are many different ones that is what James is saying he is making a distinction that there are different types of tests and some of us say, well, what? I can? try a different type of test, for example, can I exchange tests like you're talking about tests for rich people? I'd like to try them for a while, you're talking about tests for married people. I would like to try it, I think I would. be good at those tests.
I think I would be better prepared for those tests, but never again after last year do we associate joy with status or success because now we have seen that no matter how big your name is in people's eyes, you may still want to take off your life because joy is not a product of what people say about you. Joy is not a product of how people hold you in esteem or contempt, so different types of evidence are added. that most of us do not understand the distinction between a temptation and a test, the language that James uses in this biblical writing, the common Greek of his day allows for both when he says tests of many kinds, he could also be referring to economic tests. difficulties or persecution that many of this diaspora of scattered tribes abroad who were believers in Jesus were experiencing or he could be talking about temptation and it is important to know the distinction between the type of trials that you will experience in your life, otherwise you could pass years blaming the devil for your bad decisions there are different types of tests some of our tests are the result of evil in the world and that results in all kinds of different wars we could study for weeks about some of our tests are the result of things that We did against our inner wisdom there are many different types of tests and if you don't know the difference between temptation and a test you will try to use the wrong tool in the test because when you are tempted the Bible teaches resistance when you are tempted to go outside the means given by God by which you have been empowered to satisfy your God given desires the strategy the tool the technique is resistance when you face a test however it is not a temptation but a test often the key is not resistance but acceptance and this was It is important for me to see the distinction because many times I accept what I must resist and I resist what I must accept.
It took me a while to learn the difference. It took me prayer to learn the difference. it takes the community of others to learn the difference. I have to get into God's Word to know the difference so I can approach my trials with wisdom. In fact, that is what James 1:5 says and it is connected to this passage, although I never thought it was what it says that if any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault and will give you now if you want to change the

flow

this year just to James 1:5 instead of asking everyone around you what you should do start with the source start with the solution stop talking about your problems with people who can't solve them it makes them feel worse it makes them feel worse and everyone is frustrated so I need the wisdom to make the solution distinction to know the test that I am in God is this that you want me to fight or you want me to do what the parable says do once with the tares that it was growing alongside the tares and to leave it like that and let you deal with it there is a distinction there are different types of tests some of the things that I am dealing with as a parent right now are simply called puberty you can't expel it you can't anoint it you can't instructing is a different kind of test it's just life some of the things I'm dealing with right now are a temptation some of them I actually believe come from the pit of hell, it's not like the devil was assigned to me personally, but just some things This is bad against my purpose and don't give yourself too much credit because a lot of us like to think that the devil had nothing better to do than give us a flat tire and I think the devil is a lot busier than that .
I think a lot of it comes down to distinguishing the type of trial I'm on, which helps me understand the distinctions between joy and pleasure, oh you know, those little church signs they make. I think we should get one by the way at Elevation. the church signs where they change the letters and put some quotes, yes, I like them. I think we should get one. How many votes do we get a church sign? Let's take our first church vote at Elevation. Church vote. We should get a church sign. and we can put things in there like this.
I saw this one day that said know Jesus, know joy, but it was spelled know Jesus, so the first one was no Jesus, you don't have Jesus, you don't have joy, know Jesus, know Jesus, know joy and I thought which is nice but it's not true no jesus there is no joy there are many things you can enjoy without jesus krispy kreme tastes good whether you are saved or not my taste buds are not saved it is fun to talk bad about people whether you are saved or not, the only difference is, and this is important, that the quality of joy becomes more important than the quantity of joy.
You also hear preachers say things like this. God doesn't care if you are happy, he just wants to make you holy and I can't believe how many people would say Amen to a matter like that that you would never feel about your own child, how many parents we have in the house and how many of you don't care if your son is always happy in life. I'm going to call child protective services. He's not a good good father. No, he's a good father. Good gifts. I never understood that and I never really understood the distinction between joy and happiness because there is no difference in the biblical language it is no difference like in English we have like Pharrell happy which is like dancing happy and then in Hebrew they had happy is the same word is blessed is the same word as joy when James says count with joy means consider yourself Literal translation extremely happy, so we must make the distinction.
I guess between generic joy and Jesus' joy because he said verse 2 considers it pure joy because of the way my mind works. If there is pure joy, there must be another kind of joy. It's a bit of a trap, it's more of a question of grammar because the literal translation is tell it all, joy, so it doesn't say pure joy. I have a verse for this though let me do it from ah let me do it from Hebrews chapter 12 I I have always loved this image of joy because it helps me make the distinction between joy and pleasure.
Well, pleasure can be associated with joy, but joy does not depend on pleasure. There is a second thing I want to talk about. I want to talk about directing. of joy the direction of joy we are talking about

backseat

DJs, right, we are talking about how sometimes we find our joy controlled by circumstances and situations, but Jesus gives us an image that is contrary to the cultural expectation of joy and what I promise. I'll read the Scriptures in a minute, but I want to tell you a lot of things and I don't know where to start or where to stop.
It's all in me today. It seems that right now there is more of an era like when my grandparents were 30 and 40, there seems to be a pressure for us to always feel pleasure, it is no longer just a desire that we have, we want to feel good, it is almost like the way that networks Social networks have built our visualization. experiencesof other people's lives through the filters of their most desirable moments there is something wrong with me if I am not constantly happy all the time that is a problem for me because I am not genetically predisposed to be happy I just am not. finding out about myself early in life I'm not like one of you who just finds reasons to smell roses who just finds reasons to be happy some of you appreciate the rain appreciate the sun the rain makes you feel relaxed the sun's rays make you feel active They can find joy in everything I'm not your species and frankly you make me sick but joy is something different because the pressure to feel pleasure is part of the reason we feel so miserable and now we are living among a generation that thinks That joy is associated with a feeling in your flesh and it can be, but it doesn't have to be.
It's important to say that it can bring a feeling, but it doesn't start with a feeling. This is where we turn the tide. Can we change the current? If anyone changed the tide it was Jesus here he is on a cross here he is mocked and his reputation is irreparable here those he created spit on him and condescend to him and the writer of Hebrews, whoever he was, says We need to fix Hebrews 12:2 our eyes on Jesus the pioneer and perfecter or the author and finisher either translation is acceptable to our faith for the joy set before him he endured the cross now this is where my message really happens okay? put in front of you that's what your joy is connected to what you've put in front of you and I'll break it down as best I can joy is a point of view joy is a way of looking at things this helps me I don't I know from you, but it frees me from feeling the need to feel a certain way.
We have so many people who quit their jobs because they are unhappy and don't really understand that sometimes joy is not the absence of sadness or the presence of the spectacular and All we have to look at is that verse where it says that Jesus, for the joy set before him, I want to use it as an image for a moment, he set joy before him, so to be able to endure the cross, that's the next part. enduring the cross despising its shame he found no joy in the event he found joy in the guaranteed outcome of the event he found no joy in the feeling of hanging on the cross it was not because he was the son of God that the nails, you know, transcended the laws of the pain and the material laws of the universe, it was just as painful, but because of the purpose, you understand that it is very different to go through pain with a purpose than through pain without a purpose, it is the difference between Graham jumping on my back.
He only weighs 90 pounds and I don't know what he's going to jump on my back and I feel like all the plates are sliding like I'm 73 years old in my lower back and the difference between putting 90 pounds on a bar to do squats if Do it on purpose, it's a warm-up weight, if I don't wait for it, it could take me to the ground, the same weight, but when I was ready for when Jesus hung on the cross, I wasn't surprised by the shame I felt. You were not surprised by the suffering You were not surprised by the pain You were not surprised by the mockery You were not surprised by your saliva You were not surprised by the blood Joy is a focus before a feeling If you came to church just to hear that, I promise you you got the value of the gas money, joy is a focus before a feeling and so as we chase a feeling called joy, God has given us the ability to choose not our feelings, did you ever try to choose joy.
I tried it on Pinterest, it sucked, it didn't work, then I felt guilty because I couldn't find joy and it made me feel less joy, so now I'm in a joyless pit, it's a cyclical lack of joy and shame, it's the difference between choice and consequence joy is really a choice because some of the trials people go through are real mental illnesses and it's kind of hard for them to feel happy because they have a good parking spot and no matter how much you tell them to do it . feel happy be happy you know be happy feel happy count your blessings James doesn't say count your blessings this is not a nursery rhyme it's a biblical scripture he said count it all joy he said learn to turn you may not know this statement but there is a financial statement , it is an income statement, it has your income on one side, your expenses on the other.
James says if he can learn to put some of the things in the income column that he thought of. It was a waste of some of the things in the blessings column that you thought were a burden, if you can change the

flow

, you actually have more joy than you are aware of, but you won't get it by praying for a feeling that you are I'm going to get it by taking decisions joy is not a choice in fact the worst way I can get more joy is to focus on getting more joy the best way to stop being happy is to ask yourself if I'm happy and see that I'm not I don't remember my grandparents ever They would talk about this if they did.
I do not remember. I never remember my grandmother. My grandfather talked about that. Are we really happy they didn't think that way? There were no feeds or scrolls. There weren't all these other things to make them unhappy at any time? There wasn't an infinite supply of unhappiness in his pocket in the form of a device. They didn't have that, so they focused on something. more what was what is that that brings joy if I focus on it I know what it is not is not looking around how they are what are they thinking where did they go on vacation?
Where did you go? what's going on? dressing when she is, what do they think of me? No, that's not going to work, he said because of the joy before him, so I can't look around and expect to have joy. I can't judge my situation according to other people's. calling and expecting to have joy I cannot judge my gift in comparison to other people's talent and expect to have joy. I know it's a cliché because we say it every week, but nothing destroys joy like comparing the lives some of you have. It would be so funny if you didn't do this while you were living it, if you didn't do this, I mean, my neck hurts, just doing it to illustrate, imagine what it's doing to your soul, you can't. have joy that way it is destroying your joy you are praying for more joy and yet you are destroying joy God has given you the joy of your salvation the joy of your calling the joy of your task God give me more joy well it is a decision not to to have joy that's the worst way to get joy the decision of what I'm going to focus on and I can't do it like that and I definitely can't do it like that looking at what's behind me, I can't look back.
I remember when God called Moses in the burning bush and said his name. He said I'm not. I remember he said I'm not. I will be. There's something in that There's something in that There's something in that David echoes in Psalm 16 he says in your presence is the fullness of joy presence everyone says that word presence the gift of joy is found in presence but that doesn't mean in the church That is not what it means to say in the presence of God it is the fullness of joy because God would never limit his presence to a building, it does not mean that when you are doing everything right then you will feel happy because God will not reward you based on behavior that you do not be the good news of the gospel, the gospel is. for sinners the gospel is for the weak the gospel is for the lame the gospel is for the broken the gospel is for those who are ashamed that is not what it means in your presence it is fullness of joy that means that joy can only really come into my life when I'm focused on what God is doing right now and I can't focus on what God is doing right now in my life if I'm consumed by what He's doing in someone else's life or if I am still sorry and bitter about what happened three years ago or three months ago or even three minutes ago much of our lack of joy is not about possession, but about position, what I mean is this, he put joy in front of him, it is not a question of the presence of God, his presence is everywhere. it is not a question of God's presence you do not have to ask him to be with you he already is it is not about God's presence it is about yours are you present in this moment are you present in this trial are you present in this worship service? if you praise it for a second we need this lesson friends family brothers sisters brothers mothers fathers children we can't go to a concert anymore without trying to capture it and I can't enjoy it because I'm too busy trying to post it kids do something nice capture it well you can do it, but they will also kill him.
There is no quicker way to kill your children's cuteness than to try to capture it. I swear the demons come out when they start trying to capture things to publish. God. know your heart and send something to your iPhone. I don't know and shoot lightning at your kids and they start. Can I show you a picture real quick? I don't like to be too lenient with these sermons, but show my family. off, but this is just a quick photo of us on vacation before Christmas, look at that, here's another photo. I'll show you a couple so you can see.
I'll tell you something you wouldn't see if I wore them. Instagram go back to the first one please that one looks happy right and go to the other one you can go to the other one that one looks sad let me tell you something that's not my sad face mm-hmm that's my RBF that's my rest Bible face, that's it my really blessed face, that's my focus face, was when I was listening to the sermon, turn the tide at TGI Fridays at Miami International Airport on concourse D. I'm happy that the other one lifted the other one up.
I was so angry. At Abbey, that was the seventeenth time I tried to take a selfie and I wanted to throw it in the ocean when I was done, not in a playful way. Look, I'm just trying to get us started on this series. down start looking beneath the surface of things to stop looking at the surface of things and to stop discerning I discovered that you can miss the joy because you're looking around you can miss the joy because you're looking back you, but this it's what you can also miss out on the joy because you're trying to look too far ahead, it's just as dangerous and some of you, while I was preaching the part about looking around us, were like no, I'm fine brother. like 53 I don't do that anymore and when I was talking about looking back you say, yeah, I've taken care of my business there, okay, but what you do is you look forward, yeah, like I was doing the other day.
Driving that new car I told you about and I can't get anywhere without a GPS, would you be embarrassed if I told you I was going to my mom's house in the city and I was following the GPS? That's how bad my sense of direction is. It's a true story and I crashed into the back of another car because I was looking three laps ahead and I wasn't looking three feet forward and I could be destroying your joy, not that you like to compare or not that you'll regret it but maybe I'm just trying to get this far, you know, my retirement is down, you're 24, it'll come back, allow it at the right time, you know, but for those of us who need to plan, he didn't say it's in your plans. . fullness of joy and you can't even affect the future from anywhere other than the present and it's all wasted energy, so this is my year of presence.
I am trying to discover what it means to find fullness of joy in the presence of God and in To find fullness of joy in his presence I have to bring my presence to my real life, not my presence to some imaginary setting but to the real life that God gives me. has given right now, you know what's good about it, let's turn to Psalm 16 for just a moment and I promise to start to close this are you enjoying this teaching today? is this blessing your life touches someone and say this is my happy face because I was focused I was happy because I was focused the other one was trying to show the world something that wasn't real I was thinking maybe I could get some likes on this and by I didn't focus on what was right in front of me, but Jesus, for the joy set before him, endured, not enjoyed. the cross endured the cross because of the joy set before him and now I want to tell you the whole sermon, well here is the sermon in one sentence, wouldn't you have been preaching for 35 minutes?
Yes, but he hadn't said anything yet. Here it is. the sermon in a prayer you can't choose joy you can only choose your priorities and your priorities control your joy you can't choose joy any more than you can you just can you think you can choose joy it's like trying to choose the weather what you can choosing is your priority and your priorities will ultimately control your joy Psalm 16 put it on the screen for me the verse where I started verse five please the Lord is my chosen portion look at the word chosen means I have decided to do God, the most important thing in my life.
I don't want to leave that in the abstract because what does that mean? Read the Bible first thing every morning, perhaps, but it means more than that. His will is what I want. His ways are higher than mine. then the Lord Yahwehgreat I am the ever present help in times of trouble he is my chosen portion I have looked at everything else that this world offers me to enjoy and yes I can enjoy things that are not necessarily spiritual but I do not need them to survive and I will no longer link my joy to a temporary pleasure because I tried, I tried, I cheered for the Clemson Tigers when they were three and eight and when they won their second national championship in recent years.
People came up to me and congratulated me. I was happy because I enjoyed the game. I saw the game. I liked. I enjoyed the 44-16 victory, but I didn't need spandex-clad college kids to give me a reason to live that. It's not my priority. I can't invest my joy in what people I don't know do with an oblong object made of pigskin turned into leather with a few stitches in four 15 minute increments is the wrong priority I enjoyed it but my joy is not in it last week I told you something very powerful about your heart I said when you know where it comes from you know how it comes out when you know where it comes from you know how comes out this is what I mean This week where it comes from determines when it ends is the source of your joy how you can know what my priorities are the psalmist said the Lord is my chosen portion and here is something Jesus said in what i have been thinking all week i have been meditating on this he said remain in me my words remain in you you bear much fruit sometimes you will be cut off but you will never be cut off if you remain in me and my words remain in you there will be a constant flow of joy Like the vine and the branches you will have what you need.
Joy will flow from a place of your rest and trust in me, not in your own efforts and not just in certain things. that happens if you pass that's fine but don't confuse the frosting with the cake remain in me my words remain in you so it says something in John 15:11 please I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete the Lord said that many of us settle for partial joy and equate joy with the absence of sadness joy is not the absence of sadness if I were Jesus I couldn't have had it on the cross he said I want my joy to be in you, but You have to admit it because to just say well, Jesus is my joy, doesn't really get to the heart of why we could know Jesus and still not know joy, because it's a decision when I give too much priority to the wrong things in my life then those priorities control my joy if my priority is recognition then recognition controls my joy when people recognize me I will feel happy about it if my priority is recognition if my priority is convenience then when something is inconvenient the inconvenience will steal my joy, but he didn't really steal my joy, I did it because I let him drive and whatever drives the car gets to the DJ, so the Lord told me in preparing this message that we have some DJs in the back seat. that have been

controlling

our joy, our feelings, our finances, our bank accounts, our status, our position, our situations and today God wants you to tell some of the things in your life that have been controlling your joy from the back seat.
You are not my God. You are not my vine, you are not my source and you do not sustain my joy, joy is something deeper than what I feel about it, joy is something deeper than what I post about joy, it is something deeper than what I feel right now. joy before me. I am resetting my priorities now, when I do that, my joy flows not from what is but from who God is to me. This is the duration of joy and when my joy is ending, give me my point, my last point. the duration of joy is because it comes from the wrong place it comes from determines when it ends and I wonder where your joy is today I had to study this a lot because I struggle to enjoy my life I really love my family I really love my church I love what I can do It is a blessing and a privilege but I have to admit to you that at times I have been guilty of enduring something that God has given me to enjoy and every time it happened it was because of my priorities, your priorities control. your joy you can try anything you want be happy happy happy and the quick fix things the quick fix things will get you through the next few hours but where it comes from determines when it runs out there is a well that never runs dry there is a joy there is a deep and lasting feeling of joy that is available to us that we have not been accessing and what we are praying for more of God is waiting for us to order our lives around my joy is too important for me to leave it in my hands if today goes well or not or whether they talk to me or not or whether it turns out well or not is very important I can't afford it I'm getting older now I'm not I'm not 25 years old anymore.
I am a distinguished 38-year-old man full of wisdom and I cannot afford to give away my joy at any time. I can't afford to have these DJs in the backseat changing the temperature of my life. I can't, I can't afford to let my emotions control my joy, so I want to pray for people today. Play something more interesting that is boring. I want to pray for people today. It's just a chord. Pray for the people today who have allowed you. joy of being controlled by something other than the priority of God's presence in your life and you want me to pray for you to experience a vital connection with God in the next six days until we meet again, please stand if you want let him pray for you.
About that, I have allowed my joy to connect with things that cannot sustain me. There's so much more that I wanted to share with you, but I feel like I was able to present this word to you on a level that yes I can receive that amount, so turn it around instead of going, Lord, I need more joy, like it's going to rain in the form of candy balls and, instead of praying, God, give me the wisdom so when things come into my life, to count them as joy. consider it joy because I know that the testing of my faith produces patience teach me God to send joy before me like Jesus did like the psalmist did said the Lord always has before me he is in my right hand I will not be shaken in your presence it is the fullness of joy and observe this at your right hand pleasures forever, not those that come and go, not those that leave you worse afterward, not those that leave you sick afterwards, not those that make you feel bad for it.
Shameful for it then perpetual pleasure in the presence of God the Father I thank you for each person that you have brought here today perhaps they have been in that season of mourning mourning mourning thank you because your word says that crying will last a night but joy comes with tomorrow and we bless you because what that means for us today is that in everything that is happening in our lives right now there is an opportunity for joy. I confess before these people God that I need this message more than anyone who heard it, I am preaching this today, God, because sometimes in my life I have put things in front of me that had no place as my priority and every time I did I was disappointed and every time I did it I received a hit, but it wasn't like that.
You won't fix anything so this week will you show us what's really important? Would you help us see our lives with the wisdom that only you provide? Help us understand that joy does not come from better circumstances and joy does not come from human acclaim. comes from ordered priorities we want to seek your kingdom first we want to know what matters to you and we thank you in the name of Jesus Amen thank you for watching the Elevation Church YouTube channel don't stop here join the eFam our extended online family and join the us live every sunday subscribe to this channel so you don't miss a single video or live broadcast and share it with a friend.
