JFK Remembered: The President's Iconic Last Moment

It's been said that every car tells a story and this one remembers the day America lost a

five decades later. JFK's limousine remains one of the most powerful symbols of that day. The convertible that the

president

and first lady drove around Dallas. 1961 Ford or Lincoln. Continental returned the beautiful Reagan almost 50 years after those shots rang out in Dealey Plaza now there was almost silence when people saw that car where it now sits at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan, we all have pictures of that day etched in our minds and each of those images includes that car, it is such a vital and intimate part of the murder.

I mean, that's where the president's life essentially ended, so people are really drawn to him. Many ask what would happen if the car moved faster and if it had a bubble roof. The limousine had no armor when the president was assassinated. They brought it back to Washington to be studied for evidence by the Secret Service and the FBI. It was refurbished with new titanium armor. A permanent hood was added. It was put back into the presidential fleet driven until the 1970s and was codenamed X 100, although Americans only saw on black and white television that the Lincoln limousine was actually midnight blue.

It was said that President Kennedy did not like the bubble top and when the rain let up that fateful Friday. the bubble was removed when the Sun emerged in Dallas, standing orders from the Kennedy White House, wherever the weather permitted that roof came off, what is not clear all these years later is whether that upper part that was not bulletproof would have made some difference. On that day, Nov. 22, 1963, the museum told us late today that Clint Hill, the first lady's Secret Service agent who got into the car that day, will visit the limo again this week.
