I have ever visited this place, so I am very excited about this and, yes, let's go see it. 28 minutes, okay, I have to go. People go crazy in this town anyway. I'm here. I arrived at Saint Laurent and I see it. I just left. on the side of the road so I can show you what this building looks like from a little distance, but I'm pretty sure it's Luffa Farms, right there behind that Canadian tire and, my God, I don't know the square footage of this thing, but it is a big building.

More Interesting Facts About,

the world s biggest rooftop greenhouse...

Some of you know that I just bought a drone, but speaking of Ariel, I mean. Listen, it wasn't the best drone shot ever, but what do you want? This is YouTube, not Netflix. Okay, everyone, I'm here. I'm inside the Loopa farms. I'm about to enter the

greenhouse

for the first time. Come on, what's going on? Hey man, welcome, I just walked into the

world

's largest rooftop greenhouse. I'm here with my new friend Rosa. Hi, how are you today? I am good how are you? Rosa, maybe you can tell me where the concept of luffa farms came from.
the world s biggest rooftop greenhouse
What are you trying to do here? So the company was founded in 2009. They had a vision or mission to grow food where people live so they thought what better place to grow food than rooftops using previously unused spaces so it was in 2009 that we built our first rooftop greenhouse, the first in the world and since then we built three, three more, so we have a total of four rooftop farms and that's about 300,000 square feet of growing space, and this one where we are today is uh, the largest, so it's about three football fields, 163 football fields, yeah, um, 4000 square feet.
the world s biggest rooftop greenhouse
I don't know much about farming, but I guess the seasonal aspect is a big deal. Can you continue on the In the middle of winter in Montreal, yes we are because we are on the rooftops and we can use that residual heat from the building below us, so that heat that rises and would otherwise come out of the building, so we act as an insulator on the top of the greenhouse so we can capture all that waste heat and that allows us to save about 50% on our energy consumption compared to a conventional greenhouse and then all of this is packed down below and then sent to the distribution points um or home delivery with electric vehicles oh you're doing everything electric too uh we do everything electric for home deliveries well you're just living in the future here in loofah uh we're good we have these flowers , they need to be pollinated, uh, so I have hives with bumblebees located all over the greenhouse, you have hives here, yeah, they're little boxes and then we'll have bumblebees that help pollinate everything, so I mean there's about 25 of these hives. in the greenhouse which doesn't I don't know if we'll see any right now I think I saw something flying there so it could be a bubble um and we grow hydroponically so instead of growing in soil we grow using water and nutrients so that Our plants grow with the root system. in coconut substrate   which is a by-product of the coconut industry   um and then just the hydroponic system itself   which really helps us reduce the type of resource use, so you're saving water   you're using electric vehicles you're giving Jobs for bees, I mean, what aren't you doing here?
That's a good question, yeah, so these are our cherry tomatoes. I mean, it's one thing to see it from the outside, but when you're here, you start to understand the scale of this. thing just the infinite rose also rose is talking to her coworker and trying to see if I can get on the elevator to get a bird's eye view of what this looks like here we go we're in the elevator oh wow look at this The place isn't bad, huh, not bad. I just can't believe I'm on a rooftop right now. I feel like I'm in the Matrix or some futuristic movie.
I dont even know. This place is crazy. but yeah, obviously you can get an idea of how far these rows continue, so pink, these are all tomatoes behind me, they're all tomatoes, yeah, these are the rogue tomatoes right now, this is for shade, but in winter, at night, We'll unfold them, oh, so this can cover the entire length that comes out and that helps too. We also have a blackout curtain because we are in a nice residential area so we want you to know that we make sure there is no light pollution. Also for you. I know the animals and all that, all those little ones, yeah, that's a big greenhouse.
You know, I didn't really know what to expect today, but yeah, this has been great. I am also excited about the future as the world's population continues to grow. I mean, listen, I'm a traveler, I've been to a lot of places where food shortages can be a problem or there are just a lot of problems around feeding billions of people, but the idea of repurposing spaces in your own city by doing it in a way that is local fresh, no pesticides, building a little ecosystem, you know you have bees and all these different insects that take care of the plants, luffa farms really have something here and I hope this idea spreads, whether it's them, be someone I hope to see greenhouses like this everywhere one day, then I will be like an old man.
I'll be like remembering when I went to the

biggest

one in the world anyway, that would be cool, thanks rosa, that was a problem, okay, how cool was that. Honestly, I'm happy a company like that exists. I feel like I said it before. I feel like this could really help humanity greatly if this idea of rooftop greenhouses is scalable. It makes me happy to be a Montrealer. It makes me happy. I'm happy to see something like this coming out of Canada, yeah, what more can I say? Oh yeah, they are hiring, by the way, that's Rosa, she said before I left, they were hiring for everything, so it's good to see them doing well and expanding their business anyway.
I'm paying for this car by the hour, so I have to go to the next stop, Ikea. I'm going to get a table if you're watching this and you're from a company in Montreal that's doing, you know, work that's really unusual or really special or just really interesting to show in a YouTube video. Feel free to email me to get in touch and maybe we could do something because I feel good about this. What do you think I feel? That was a fun video, okay I'm going to go get that table, have a great day, everyone see you next 17 things, I came to ikea for a table, I bought 17 things, why is it always like this?
