It's time for you to remember what you said. What do you remember about what you said? Remember this? You can quote me on this later. I'm not going to

turbo

charge it. I've changed my mind since then. Where is the purity in a disgusting

turbo

charger? Take it back Where is the purity? There is no purity. here, this car is meant to be a pure driver's car, that was just a dream mountain, it came from the place of evos and s2000 or

your

car was too slow and you decided you had to fix it, which is not a bad thing , it's not a bad thing, but today, people, we're turbocharging the brz and we're going to show you, yeah, how to do it.

Welcome to another episode of powerful car modifications. It's been a long time coming, but now it's inevitable. the inevitable is going to happen eventually you want faster and faster is happening today what is missing absolutely everything on this car while there have been wheels and tires and anti-roll bars and stereo and body kit and all this kind of stuff under here it What is missing has not changed much, what is missing is power, people, that is, it is missing power and it can be achieved with the help of a little thing that looks like a snail.

how to turbo your car in one day...

That's right, it can be achieved in two different ways: You can use nitrous. you could load, you could overload or you could just do what needs to be done and that's what we do because we're in the hobby business and we do what needs to be done to get it done and that's the task, what, what, what. We are, we are speeding up the brz, I didn't read my script, there is no script, we made this up as we went along, we are speeding it up, that's what we're going to do today, we're going to put on the gold hat and dive in. and go on a magical journey with us, we will show you how to turbo charge

your

car and you can do it in a weekend or during the school holidays or if you had some people who were quite handy and a couple of them were going to help you one day, so when you're turbocharging your car, obviously one of the most important things you need is a turbocharger.

Here we have a Garrett GTX 2860r gen2 and here is the kit that really makes it fit. The brz and this kit were made and developed by Mike de Sme. Thank you very much for coming and he supplied us with this kit. Can you give us a quick look? I have a couple of knives here so we can do it. an epic unboxing, can you explain a little bit about what we will see here and this kit that you made, show us what you have made? 475 horsepower turbo, that will do for us. take the turbo put on a custom actuator bracket and uh that basically fits right into the engine bay with no clearance issues look at that awesome vbn rear housing so the rear housing has been changed because this is a replacement factory turbo for an sr20 like a 180sx but it has been adapted for the brz.

This GTX Gen 2 from Garrett is the update to the original GTX series but with a ton of improvements including an updated aerodynamic compressor wheel that also makes up to 20 more horsepower than the original. As a turbo, we're going to need a bunch of other parts, including an upgraded high-capacity crankcase with a turbo oil return, an air filter that will fit inside the front bumper, an equal length turbo manifold that will feed our turbo with the best. Fill in a turbo wastegate that will feed our existing performance exhaust. We have already installed a silicone hose kit intake pipe and a front mounted black intercooler which can also be reverted to silver once installed.
Tuning the entire system will be ours. mate tyler from pvs who runs a shop dedicated to all things 86 and brz, we tuned this one before and at the hubs we generated around 130 kilowatts, what's your expectation with a kit like this? How do you think we will end? with um I figure between 180 and 200 depending on how much boost we use, but having stock injectors and all that, we can't push it too hard anyway, so it's okay, and that's with gasoline, yeah, with 98, you can too get ethanol if you want, but fuel system modifications to do that, um, injectors, some basic things that depend on how hard you want to go, but generally speaking, the injectors give you the first level is the power limit, then the engine, because I'm referring more or less to the Subaru engine in the At the end of the day, what's your what's the limiting factor with these things?
More the rods I find, yes, they have a tendency to break the rods and it's more the chatter if you're doing a lot of torque, that's what will kill them. If you're making more power at the top end, it seems like they'll last a little bit longer, so yeah, usually the bottom end ends up being the weak link because these things are pretty much ready and, as we know, they make all that power at the top. so you're just adding something else, that's what you're saying if you try to put the power down at lower revs, which would make it feel like more torque, that's right, someone's got to have that, someone's got to give in, yeah, that's it. good. you steal from peter to pay paul, but on the track it's definitely faster if you have it more at the top end anyway, where you have fun, that's right, matt, okay, the goal, marty, is to keep doing what what we are doing before.
I'm trying to make the mods as similar as possible and I know this kit can make a lot of power with ethanol and all that kind of stuff but the sti puts out 180 kilowatts so what I want is 180 kilowatts and I know we can adjust this at 200. at 250 more, but the goal is 180 kilowatts because then we have two blue two-door Subarus that have the same tires, the same type of configuration, both with the same power and then we can go out on the track, go to the Street Martin, even we can get there. Church Street Parramatta, but we need, we both need bigger, creamier front supports.
Bumpers out of the sump, out of the air box, out of the false sound generator. The thing disappeared, yes, unfortunately, we have to get rid of it. You wanted to keep it, but it has to work well. let's raise it, no hoist here, let's go old school, no fire in your backpack and take it, yes, the first step in this turbo conversion is to raise the car with a jack, if it's too low you can use some ramps or boards of wood to place the jack under and then make sure it is secure on some jack stands.
It is not necessary to remove the wheels, but it makes access a little easier. The first item that goes directly into the bin is the factory intake system and then the next. The first step is to remove the entire front bar, which seems like it should be a simple thing, but on this car it's pretty detailed with over a thousand little clips, screws, and connectors. Well, not really a thousand, but compared to your typical JDM nugget, which is what we do. We're used to working, there's a lot more involved in removing this, but it's all finally gone and that means it's time to start talking about front mount strategy, so Tyler, the front bar is off, now all this, what's up and what things, yes. so we have to remove the little air deflectors, which kind of drive air I guess they direct it to the radar, which is a good idea, but that's where our intercooler tube has to go, so it has to go and we keep it. bottom cover which is where our intercooler will be located but I will also put a bracket on the crash bar so it still fits and then I will put it back on the top as well yeah sorry bracket on the top and then the base will go sits there, just does it a little bit um gives it a little more support as we continue to separate the front of the car in preparation for our front support and pipe.
I'm going to get under the car and start undoing the exhaust system and up top we need to access a vacuum source. which is under the intake manifold, so if we sit there, all I have to do is there's a hose under here, you see, yeah, right, that's your vacuum hose, yeah, so what's up with many guys driving them? Some of them don't. Some of these kits don't have a purge valve, yes, so there are hoses that, if they come off, are the same as these ones down here. I didn't even know they came off yeah it's a little so if they go off under impulse they create a huge vacuum like it doesn't damage the engine but the car stalls and people get scared yeah you can't see it yeah , yeah, right, I didn't even know it was a cover when you, when you, um, so if I did it if it's right, I'd honestly take it off the blanket and then we'd put it in a catch can, oh yeah, cool, and then that one in a catch can, yeah, for the purpose of this, we'll put it back in the entrance, I don't normally do that.
I don't like doing that, but especially with how smooth this is going to be, I would also hope that I don't have too many problems, these are pretty good, while we take the throttle body off, let's clean it up, this one has quite a bit of carbon buildup, which isn't crazy , some throttle body cleaner and a soft cloth will do the trick. The heads are about to come out. They've only been there for a couple of weeks, but now, um. There they go, yes, and they disappeared. We actually made some decent power with these unequal length heads when we were naturally aspirated, but now they're gone forever.
We are dropping the oil in and then drilling the holes that will mount the intercooler. instead next I'm going to remove the factory brz sump, which will also be banished to the land of naturally aspirated sluggishness, so this is the factory sump, this is the little sump that comes with our kit, so what this contains around one. An extra liter and a half of oil is also baffled which is really good for track use which is what's going to happen with this and this has return for the turbo so obviously the turbo is cooled with coolant and lubricated with oil and that's going to come down here flying back over there and it just bolts right on, which is what I'm going to do in a second, but Martin, very kindly, is down there scraping all the goo off the block and then it comes off. gonna. on and then I'll put the exhaust pieces on and then under the car we're almost done and then we get to the good stuff on top, a baffled sump is designed to keep the oil pickup fed with oil during heavy, bumpy driving. -forces and inertia like track use or kfc drive fine, sum is clean, time to hit it with some brake cleaner.
Do you have any specialized wd-40 uh parts and brake cleaner? Dude, I sure do, Martin, let me. Send that under the car mate, thanks mate, there you go mate, there's that wd break point. I'm going to spray it specially, the parts are very clean now, man, okay, it's an exciting time because it's time to test the fit of the front support and uh. Look, that's awesome, so you have two options: you can turn it black or we can turn it around and go for the buggy edit that would look like this, um, which looks cool and tells everyone that you're turbo, but I'm not.
I don't need to tell everyone I'm turbo. I just need to tell Marty and he already knows except you're on the internet telling everyone you're turbo. Yes, I know, but you know that no one will notice me on the street. Ah, there. It looks amazing, how are you doing down there? Martin, good man, I'm just cleaning up the rest of this board. It's one of those things where if you take your time right you don't get a few clicks later and some plates are annoying because then you have to remove the collectors again yeah so do it once and do it right it's almost clean so once it's clean a new sump is put in and then I and then what's next Tyler what are we doing then? lunch yeah once that's on we'll obviously let the sump dry and the headers are on yeah while someone is installing all the intercooler piping and putting all the little brackets on um yeah we can start bolting the heads and start plumbing. all the turbo lines and all that kind of cool stuff, so how long will it be between now and the time we put the turbo in place?
How long do you think? Guess. Oh I will say that when replacing the sump it is important to remove all the old schmooze so the new sump doesn't leak when you apply the new shmoo, a blade and some patients is all that is needed, then clean it and your new sump with some parts cleaner and then apply an even bead of schmoo over the new one. sump that will squish when you bolt it to the bottom of the engine. We can reuse the factory oxygen sensors that bolt directly to our new manifold. Now we can install our aftermarket sump and once this is done we can finish installing the exhaust components.
From time to time, everything under the brz needs to be done. This brz has continued to impress me with its Lego-like modability,Wait, screw it, but you have to customize these 10 things, yes, 100, no, this is really good, he's done a really good job of reviewing it in the review, but like all new kits, it's amazing, very good, that It's incredible, well, there it is, thank you very much. very much for watching this episode of mighty car mods, of course if you want to support the show you can get some merchandise from mightycarmos.com, like this t-shirt or this t-shirt, that t-shirt, key tags, caps and all kinds of cool things that you can get. that's on mightycommons.com for now we're going to get this out we're going to go look do you want to have something for dinner?
