backpacking

meals

last

minute

video at the

grocery

store

, obviously I think getting instant meals or boiling a Rei's bagged meals are great and like those they're really delicious and they've been formulated to have the right macros in many cases, but I think for a lot of us that can be kind of cost prohibitive to eat. prepared

backpacking

meals for every meal, but it also seems like sometimes it's not very convenient if you realize you don't have enough food or you need to go buy something very quickly for most of us, a

I'm not saying this should replace that, but I think it's a good idea to know what works best for you as a backpacker, so I'll show you what works. Best for me before I dive into this, just a couple of warnings. First of all, I wanted to get things that you can find in almost every grocery store, so obviously depending on where you live and where you shop, your grocery shopping could really look like. Unlike this, I also follow a vegan diet or a plant-based diet, so you will see that there are no animal products in my food.

I also focus on things that have a long shelf life and that don't need to be refrigerated and all my meals here require no cooking, I literally just boil water and pour water into a container because that's how I pack. I hate cooking on the road so this is all instantaneous cool there are a lot of cars and dogs and things barking because we're here at a trailhead well that's how you know we're not pretending even though in reality we might be Pretending we might not be at a trailhead, let me show you our green screen technology, yes, green screen, look at this. look at this green screen I'm not real I'm on a big screen I'm a big screen so let me show you what I bought at the supermarket let's talk about breakfast so I'm not actually going to mention oatmeal oatmeal is like a really obvious one.

This time I did something a little different and bought instant potatoes. The reason I bought instant fries instead of mashed potatoes is because all the mashed potatoes in my supermarket contain milk or dairy, so I had to opt for these things, obviously if you eat dairy you could use mashed potatoes , could be a little more practical, but this is what I have here, so what I'm going to add to this are these instant soup mixes. my best backpacking hack, so here I have instant corn chowder, instant sweet basil pesto, instant vegan sauce, and a vegetarian chili seasoning mix, one of these will be good for two or three meals, at least the only thing to take into account is the sodium. count on these, so some of them will be high in sodium, but they will be a very useful and easy way to add a little more fun to your meal, so with these I have two boxes of these potatoes that I would probably just throw away . these in a bag to store them, take them out of this annoying box and then pack all these seasonings, like the salt and pepper packets that you have, they are amazing, I think I'm buying hot sauce at your supermarket or if you want, stop. for fast food, ask by saying yes to the hot sauce packets for once, what did you just say?

Say yes to hot dog packages for once, you go to a very popular fast food taco place and they say: do you want spicy? sauce and you always say absolutely no because if you say yes they'll give you like a billion packets of hot sauce. I recommend saying yes so you have plenty of hot sauce to take with you backpacking. I'm just saying that in general as a backpacker I would recommend once saying yes to hot sauce packets when you're going to eat tacos to have hot sauce and potatoes some type of seasoning and then add dried vegetables so in my case.
I'm adding sun dried tomatoes, boom, that's good for breakfast, so for lunch I'm making wraps, they're the best for a backpacking lunch. You can put anything in a tortilla and it tastes good for lunch. What I'll have is a big tortilla with some almond butter and now listen to me with these fried pickled cucumbers so if you're from the south I guess you know about the peanut butter pickled sandwiches very very good you have some of salt, you have a little crunch, delicious, these are simply fried with pickle flavor. cucumbers that were available at my grocery store and what I'm going to do is put them on my tortilla with some peanut butter for lunch, so I'll probably eat two of these, two packets of almond butter or peanut butter, two tortillas and then I'll add in some crunchy things like whatever you're going to put in a tortilla or anything you want to use your backpacking tortillas for, they're a great backpacking food because they're already flat so you don't have to worry about them they get hooked Flattened in their bag, they are great for adding calories to any meal, so you could even add your morning potato hash into a tortilla and make it as a breakfast burrito, so it's very easy, very convenient, I recommend tortillas for any backpacker. trip, so wait please, that's lunch, now we'll talk about dinner.
Dinner is one of those things that is probably easier to buy at the grocery store when backpacking. I tend to choose couscous. You literally just boil water and pour it. in your couscous and then you have food, they're actually seasoned couscous boxes, like this one is roasted garlic and this one is roasted pine nuts. Honestly, my recommendation would be to not buy seasoned couscous, these are super high in sodium and if you are already carrying something like a sweet basil pesto soup mix to add to your breakfast and then just add a little of this to your couscous.
Why is it so difficult to say couscous? What am I talking about again? Okay, couscous. For dinner I have couscous and then I'll add back in some of my soup mix or my seasoning mix and then some sun dried tomatoes or whatever other dried vegetables I have with me so I know they might not look like the best . exciting foods, but this is super easy and that's what this video is about is ease, so this is what I bring to snack on at my grocery store. I bought these bars that are essentially just dates and nuts and that's it, they're high in calories, they're super. dense, they're sweet and that's something I tend to want when I'm backpacking, they're sweet things, I know you probably shouldn't eat a little bit of sugar all the time in your daily life, just like you don't want to eat a ton of sodium when we go backpacking. backpacking, obviously, there's a little bit of forgiveness, plus we need to replenish our sodium intake, plus sugar helps sustain us, gives us energy, being on the sugar train, um, I would also recommend having some type of gummy to chew on.
Gummies like this are great because they give you something to chew on, they give you a little bit of sugar, but they are small and light. I also have these roasted and salted nuts. I found that they are the most calorie dense and the lightest option for nuts, soy nuts, plus I bought them and the

last

thing I have here is these or is a resealable bag of crackers. like a coconut date cookie, the recommendation here is to get a zip lock bag and something that is dense and high in calories and with backpackers in general, that's what you want, dense and high calorie foods, boom light filling and last but not least this was not in my original bag but I really like carrots carrots are a great backpacking takeaway because they last a long time they are really delicious they are great they are orange me They like them and you can buy them in almost any supermarket and They are cheap carrots, so I also have sweet peas.
Oh, sorry, no, it's not sugary soft peas, but actually having some kind of fresh vegetables to add to your daily food intake will help you enjoy your food better and also help you. to help you poop even though I said this video focused on things that have a long shelf life and don't need to be refrigerated, I lied, eat your greens, eat your spinach, dad, so all this food is from the supermarket, these are my supermarket backpacking meals, as you can see there's a ton of packaging involved here so I actually made a whole video on a zero waste backpacking trip.
Obviously there are some benefits to preparing ahead of time and not just going to your grocery store when you're on the trail, but the reality is that I think you should get out however you can and if what you have access to at your grocery store is things like this, so you know, remember. recycle your packaging, buy things in bulk, if you have the ability to do so, keep all those things in mind depending on where you live, this could be even more than what you have access to at your supermarket, so use this just as a template to calculate To find out what is best for you on your backpacking trips, what I do is I start with a base food, then I season it and then I add something that is really the trick, I choose your base and then I season it, I eat it and then I go for a walk. so I weighed all this food and then compared it to the weight of store-bought backpacking meals and the weight turned out to be about twice as much as the stuff I bought at the supermarket, but the other thing with this is that, like All the food I bought, which is enough for three days of backpacking plus some extra, cost me around 50 dollars, obviously, all of this is pretty much what is most comfortable for you, what is most feasible for you, and what that will help you achieve it.
Go out on the road and have a good time. Well, that was a lot of information. I hope this video was helpful and if it wasn't I'm sorry you can't win them, as always if you enjoyed this video hit the button. Like button subscribe to the rai channel and I'll see you all in the
