Old Timer Sharpfinger Generational Series

Mar 30, 2024
Hello guys, welcome back to the channel. It's not often that we get back-to-back unboxings, but that's what we're getting today. But I had some thank yous and some housework that we had to do here at the Very at the beginning of the episode, so I wanted to mention one of my favorite podcasts. The Irish Survival Podcast. Olivia does a great job with that and she asked me to put down the Christmas decorations, so Olivia, this is for You, I'm keeping up the Christmas decorations and here's a shout out to your fantastic podcast. Keep making those episodes and we'll keep listening to them.

I also wanted to mention Thrifty Kniffy if you haven't gone and looked. his channel specifically in his video that he did on the uh tl29, which is, you know, this type of knife right here, your good old electrician's knife, this one actually has a falcon beak, and then it has the screwdriver and the little wire shaver and all that other good stuff, but if you watch his video, I will say that it was probably one of my favorite videos of this entire year and I take my hat off to you, you did very well on that one. so I also wanted to thank another channel, Knife Delights, if you haven't been to check it out, it has good content too and is always worth checking out, and then I got an email from Stuart Harvey and he was. talking to me about uh, since yesterday we were talking about Shackleton Skinner, uh, there was a YouTube video that described Shackleton's journey, so what I did was I put a link to that in the description box and there's also a link to Knife Delights. and for uh thrifty kniffy so you can find them easily, so I'll have to put a link for olivia too.

I'll have to figure out how to do it anyway. I'll finish by including you in the list of descriptions, olivia don. Don't worry, but yeah, that Shackleton video was really good, it's about an hour long and it almost made me late for work this morning, but it was worth watching so thanks Stuart, it was fun and I didn't do it. I mind having to rush out the door this morning, but you know, that's a whole other story, so let's get on with our main content here, let's talk about antique knives and I'm not going to get too much into the antique, the whole history of those as we all know the old

timer

was a line of knives that was released by Schrade uh the old

timer

line started in 1958 and the first knives hit stores in 1959 and as you can see I've been a fan of them all my life uh actually let's go over these real quick I have a couple of versions uh tl29 uh this is the one that was our mystery knife if you remember from earlier in the year this was a when Taylor Brands first took over the vintage line , so it has the uh the schrade hard there and it has the uh little uh symbol there that says it was uh schrade in made in china on o5 if you can't read that, but I think we have it in the other videos there, it's right there , this is the one that had the little locking knife that was good for stripping wires and all that other stuff, the so-called mystery blade that we found that was actually good. because it was for bigger transmission lines, it was cool, but it was actually designed like for Romex and stuff like that anyway and I had another uh tl29 of them because I wanted to have one that had the normal screwdriver uh wire stripper so I had one with that tool set because I'm collecting tl29, that's been slow because I keep finding new knives all the time and then there's the 34, you know this is one of my favorites, this is the one Mark Kaufman did a rehab with this one. knife for me and it made a patina on the blades because the blades were already heavily stained, but this style is not the middleman, your medium sized rancher has been a pretty constant companion in my life.

I had one when I was a teenager and have worn one from time to time over the years. I want to get a couple more. This is the one in the bone. It's made in China, but it has the matchsticks and ringed bolsters which I thought looked really cool. bone that you have here, I mean, look how thick it is, I mean, this is almost like when you put it in the spine, it's like a boat, it's just that it's a really super thick knife, you guys saw the circular saw hunter and I. do it like this, this is the one that comes with the saw blade, let me make it a very useful tool for nature lovers, you know, it has your clip point and we have the giant trapper that was part of that Walmart set. which came with this little single blade, the 120t, which I still think is probably one of the best and most practical pocket knives out there.

I really love the shape of the leaf. I love the long cut of the nail. That's just I really enjoy a long A cut of nails like that, I think sometimes they look better than the half moon style, but on the traditional blades, of course, we have our little lock back here, the Mountain Beaver Junior, which is a very useful little knife. I like this one. It was very nice, so I have my small selection of 94 ots. Here is the bone one. These are little trappers, so you have your standard spade blade and the clip blade, you know, but again, this is the one made with bone with the ring stiffeners. and the matte striped pulls, I also have the Desert Ironwood one because I liked them all and ended up buying a collection.
Here's the yellow delrin because I haven't seen many veterans with yellow delrin, they're usually in this type of delrin, the brown delrin that they make, simulates burnt bone and then this was a knife recommended by Stuart Harvey. This is the 194 ot, so it's the trapper frame of the gun stock, but it's a liner lock and uh. it only has one blade and this is a very handy knife this is really a cool little knife I really like it so that's my 94 ot collection but I also have this knife here and this is the schrade this is the 158 ot.
If you can see, this is made in the USA, as far as I know, it's carbon steel and this one, I actually bought it for a hunting trip because I thought it would make a great skinning knife and it's nice and light, it is not. very big, had the gut hook, I think I bought it in 1994. Sort of, but these aren't the knives we're here to talk about today, but I just wanted to go over my oldies collection today. We're talking about this guy, this is the veteran in 1095 HC, this is the shark finger, three and a half inch long blade, comes with a leather sheath, full tank construction, comes with a

generational

warranty and , if it looks made in the USA, I was actually lucky enough to win this knife on Instagram.
The veteran was doing a giveaway and I went ahead and entered and was one of four lucky people to win this particular knife and like I said, it's not often that we get two unboxings on the channel. but let's go ahead and get this guy out of the plastic, we'll leave it for a second, let's see what else is here. We have some caveats and a really nice leather case here. well that's not bad at all it passes the sniff test it's there William it smells like leather so let's see William likes reading these warnings so let's see what we get if you want to pause it you can but yeah just says.
It has a sharp edge or point that could hurt you, which, yes, we already know about this, don't use it incorrectly, be careful when you take it in and out of the holster handle carefully, it says one drop here. A knife coming into contact with your body can cause injury or death. One of the things that happens when you drop things is that if you lose control of something that can hurt you, like a knife, a gun, or anything else, usually the instinct is to grab it immediately and you don't. I don't want to do that, just drop it, drop it that way, you don't cut yourself, you don't accidentally shoot yourself or someone else you know, just drop them, you can pick them up later, the damage can be fixed, lives .
They're a little bit bigger than the stuff, but if you notice the handle is saw cut bone, it's not delrin, it has an old round shield, this is actually a very nice 1095 carbon knife and let's talk about this model, the 152 ot. let's see it's very bright let's see here yes the 152 ot and it says 1095 hc underneath but I was looking for the 152 ot which was introduced in 1974. It was a smaller cousin to the deer hunter the 15ot which was introduced in 1964 .This type has the smallest blade, like the one we saw in the package, three and a half inches.
Sorry, the deer hunter has a 5.6 inch blade so it's a couple of inches longer. You have a really nice place to rest your thumb and. the shape is perfect for skinning and cutting, you can grab it here on this blade, it's really a very good option even for an edc fixed blade if you want or like it, the fixed blade is part of your carry, so yes, this is a perfect outdoor knife eh no these don't weigh much I only think they weigh about three or four ounces if I remember correctly from the website I should have written that down let's take a look and see how it fits into the Sheath and it fits pretty well.
I think this leather needs to stretch a little for the clasp to close, but that's just a matter of working with it. I'll put a little conditioner on it to make it fit, speaking of covers. and skinners i wanted to show you that for the seti knife. I didn't show you how far it goes on the case, but it is carried like this and has a hole for a lanyard. I don't know if I mentioned that either, but you know it's a good carry, uh, for when you're outdoors, it gives you enough to hold on to and you still have, you know, some of the handle sticking out there so you can take it out and use it. , so let's look at our two. skinners as we have two skinners which is not a rare occurrence but you can see the shapes are similar but not exactly the same but I think they would both do a great job, for whatever you are doing this one might be better. for maybe some fine detail to get to such a sharp point, uh, but this one also makes a pretty good point, I don't think that, you know, I'm not going to have the right tool for the job if I had to skin something, that's sure so here we'll put it here since it's not their video which was just an afterthought but there you have it these are the initial thoughts and unboxing of this new

generational

series

they are coming out with the made in the usa

series

.
I saw thrifty conniffy's post about the 34 ot generational series and what he got was that it had some issues. I contacted him and he has not contacted me again. I was going to talk to him to see if there was anything else he needed to add to that, but I'm hoping their warranty takes care of that because it sounds like all of that would be covered by manufacturing, but yeah, this knife is here if you're in the market. for a US made skinning knife this is one I would definitely consider, you can still get the other one you know the 152 ot which is made in China, I think this knife has been in pretty much continuous production since '74 .I don't think they ever stopped because this is one of the most popular knives the veterans have ever made in terms of their fixed blades.
I would say you know this one, the 34ot and probably the 8ot, which is the big rancher, I think it's probably their most popular models that they've had, but that's just my opinion. I don't have any real numbers or anything on that, but I really like this handle, I really like the grooves, the bushing that they made on it, it's really nice and it looks like it's a little bit lighter on this side, a little bit darker on this side , which is pretty much how the bone is needed, you know, the diet is different, different rates depending on the uh in the bone itself and someone else will get one and they will have completely light mangoes and someone will also have completely dark mangoes, but yeah , this is really cool, so this is my unboxing and initial thoughts on this knife.
I'll have to take it with me and try it and I'll leave it. you know what I think about it in a future video, go ahead and leave me a comment, let me know what you guys think of this knife, what's your history with it, I'm sure some of you have had it. Had this knife or bought it before and what kind of use did you get if you liked it if you didn't like it yeah let me know and it's great that the old man brings knives back. to be made in the USA and especially with 1095 carbon steel, it's what everyone was asking for and hearing, so I'm hoping they know if they're having any issues with the manufacturing or something.
I'll fix it relatively quickly, but then let me know what you think and I'll definitely see you in the next one, we'll talk to you guys later, bye.
