Mar 23, 2024
Hello guys, welcome back to the channel. Today we are going to talk about Stockman and, in particular, my favorite Stockman. I think everyone loves Stockman knives. I think everyone has at least one, if not more, Stockman knives in their traditional collections. uh they're just a really useful knife they're a really useful knife they're a pattern that's been around for a couple hundred years and if it didn't work it wouldn't still be in production and I think just everyone that makes any kind of traditional They are still good ranchers, although some of the custom ones probably aren't as prevalent as the production guys, but anyway we're going to talk about this one, the veteran and it's the 34.

He's not the

middleman

, you guys have heard me talk about that before I was, you know, I had this one I bought one of the old US made ones that were rehabbed by Mark Kaufman, which I'm still very happy with. With this knife, although it is almost at the end of its useful life, I still use it from time to time just to let you know that it is still a good and useful knife that should never be put in a corner. Like, you know, in the land of misfit toys and stuff, you have to take care of these knives even when they're not that good, so this, really, the only bad thing you know is that there's absolutely no snap left in the main one. sheet, but everything else is fine.

Did a very good job cleaning everything up, finishing the patina and the other sheets still have a good fit. You have the traditional sterilization blade and then also our sheepsfoot blade and these guys. They're still pretty nimble and very handy to have and it's just a great knife, they fit really well in your pocket, they're three and a quarter inches when closed, which puts them a little bit below some of the other uh. knives you know in this class, you know most of them are three and a half for the medium sized rancher, but these came out really well, then I had the one with the bone covers just because I thought it was very useful and nice to have one that was in uh in bone because you don't see that often with the veterans where they use different covers and stuff, they really like uh the delrin and some people like it and some people don't, but that's how it is.

It's a nice, practical thing, but now we have this Heritage series and I'm talking about this knife. We will first go over this in detail. I've been using it since I bought it in January and it has worked great every time. Just one thing, I love the brass braces, they are kind of square since Tobias just made his brace, video, we can talk about these, they are pinched but still square, we have the laminated wood deck that Tobias told me about. I think it was frost, I called it silverwood, but I love laminated wood stocks on a rifle and I love how they look here on this knife.

The build is really good, we'll go over that real quick. Very good things are happening here. I don't see any kind of gaps, I don't see any kind of things that are wrong with this knife, brass bolsters, brass pins, brass liners and the blades are D2 steel, which is really good, and let's get our stamps of tank. here it's just an old

timer

and I'm going to have to take this off the camera to see with my old eyes zero eight two one is under the old

timer

and as you can see there it shows that it's in d2 steel and this is the 34 oth which is your clip and we'll go over the specs here in a second here's our sheepsfoot and there's no mark on the tang of this and then this is what I think is kind of a surprise and another improvement besides the steel is instead of with a blade of scoop, you get a nice pen, a nice pen blade and I think that makes this unique and useful.
Many people, including me, like a spade blade. I have no problem using one or whatever, but it's just unique to have at a rancher because you almost always see that and it's very rare that you see anything else and we know there have been some with all, some with pen blades, some with other different sheets, but I think this is actually a very important mark. It's very good and very useful and it's something that, if you don't like the swords that we talked about here a few videos ago, now you have something that you know, if you don't like it, that's fine, you don't do it.
I have to have it in this one, it comes in this kind of packaging, so it's more of a hanging packaging, but it tells you all the things here, um, the old timer with the d2 stainless steel blades. 2.4 inch clip point blade. 2 inch sheep split. blade 1.7 inch pen blade and it has the generational warranty if you go to the website uh and here's the bottom of the package so we can have it all in the frame. You have a diagram on the back and it tells you all your stats. Put it here so you can see all these things, but what they're saying is their generational warranty, products covered against manufacturing defects and issues and all that, they have a warranty center, this knife is made in China and you can see here is where you can find warranty information if you're interested in that stuff and here is uh oldtimerknives.com.
You can definitely go there to learn more about everything that's going on with that old timer, but I have some history. old timer, uh, you know what it is, I'll just put this here, but when I was looking for this stuff and I was looking for American outdoor brands and I wanted to find out, you know what happened? We know that Schrade and of course they mixed with imperial and all that other stuff during their time period, but roughly Schrade was in business from 1904 until 2004 when Taylor Brands bought them, so when you look at American brands for activities outdoors, they are a great corporation that they have. all kinds of brands that are under their umbrella and they all do it with, you know, shooting, hunting, outdoors, keeping all these, you know, firearms and knives and all that other kind of good stuff, and it also includes to Smith and Wesson, but in 2001, if you remember a safety hammer, they bought Smith and Wesson and then at O2 they changed the name to Smith Wesson Holding Corporation and that's when they started acquiring these brands and all these things and then it was 2014 .when the smith and wesson holding company bought battenfeld technologies and battenfeld also had a bunch of companies and if you look at the old knives, i think i have a box here, you'll see it says it's a battenfeld product and that's where battenfeld comes into this whole thing. issue is that under Battenfeld, in 2016, they bought Taylor Brands and Crimson Trace and then in 2017 they changed their name to American Outdoor Brands and I believe at that time they also spun off Smith and Wesson's firearms part into their own holding company. and the rest of the brands are under the American Outdoor Brands umbrella, if I remember correctly, and if not, you can definitely correct me in the comments, but I know when we started seeing the old boxes with battenfeld and were wondering how it fit battenfeld in all this, that's what i found out right now when they bought taylor brands, that means they also have the schrade imperial old timer and uncle henry.
All knife lines are under American outdoor brands, we now know that this Heritage series is made in China, if I didn't say that before, but I think they did an excellent job, the quality is there and it has quickly become one of my favorite user stockmans uh that's what draws me in, I think the upgrade to d2 steel blades, I think, to keep the

heritage

of these knives alive, I think they're really changing things up and moving in the right direction for guys like me and I know a lot of you are fans of the brand, you know, even as you saw with the generational series that were actually made in the US and I think it's a very positive step.
Also that we got some knives made in the USA because everyone was lamenting and going to the secondary market to buy older, used knives, and that still I think shows how loved they are and that a lot of people still go out and try to find them. the ones made in the USA in the past, you know, and then when they moved to China production, people weren't happy that it was overseas, but this knife, I'll tell you, I think it's good for daily use. user uh, if you're looking for a rancher or rancher that fits the way you work or you know what you like to wear, if it's one of your favorite patterns, I would say definitely try the Heritage series at least because you know they're a little more expensive than the Chinese ones, the base brand, and they're a little less expensive than the US-made generational ones, so they fit right into that middle ground and I think they nailed it? the park for me anyway, this is one of my favorites, you know, favorite stockman pattern, favorite stockman brand, uh, what can I say?
And I'm very lucky to know that I bought this knife before I had a relationship with it. Uh man this just happened here in the last two weeks so I'm excited about it and if you go to the description box there's a link you can go to there and if you choose to get something like I said. I get a small commission for that and then I'll turn around and turn them into knives that I'll give away to you, the audience, for doing that, so if you're interested you can do that and I still have the promo code for the knife and the American Buffalo tool that's also in the description box so I hope you find things you like there just consider you know shop there if you want if you don't that's great I still love it. you guys anyway, but you guys knew it anyway, I was doing this for love before anything happened, I'm glad I could do something for you and I hope this was entertaining for you anyway, so I'll let you go , That is all that I have.
