Behind the Scenes: 2017 CrossFit Games, Part 1

Mar 30, 2024
Virginia, so... -What was it like getting on and off the bike? That was good. I mean, getting on and off the bike, everyone has done it. Alright. You just have to get off and jump over a couple of obstacles. It wasn't bad. -Travis had his at 1. -What? -This. -Oh. I'm going to leave it there. -Here I had mine: 3 and 5. Oh, I didn't even see that. -Do you think he's just trying to get into your head and mislead you? Oh, you know. Some courses have stairs and stuff. I've been watching some videos. When they make their first lap, they will pass through here in this section.

You will make your second turn and pass through here again, and on your third and last turn, where do you pass? -You should be in the course! Simply maneuvering was difficult. I just have to write it down. Three laps is a different race. -I just got left behind. -Where did you meet Ben? -You were in 5th grade and then you arrived in 4th grade. I had a nice time early. I mean, he handed me something and then I gave it back to him. -That was a good race. -Yes man. -The first thing Ben said when he got off the bike: β€œThree laps is going to be a totally different race.” Yes.

It's going to hurt. I hit my balls against the frame. That hurts. -Koski, what happened to your balls? Just bouncing on the seat? I locked my suspension. So he was quite lively. -But better energy transfer? I guess. I don't know. -Did everyone lock it? I don't know. I honestly don't know if he's smart or not. I did. Planning to do it tomorrow too. -Are you going to tell this second heat what the fastest time is? Yes. -Fraser killed him, huh? -Well, in his heat. But I don't know how the others did, you know what I mean?

He killed their zeal because they were the first five to leave. -Are you surprised to see Mat so advanced? -Yeah. Classic. Ricky Garard had the fastest. 6 floors. Matt Fraser - 6:14. -That will look good in the lens, right there. -Let me take that and show it to John. -Yeah. Show him Juan. -What was the duration of the course? -5:45? -And which was our best? -6 minutes flat. -How did you feel? Like a walk in the park. -Do you like it? -Yeah. It will be fun. What is going to happen has a lot to do with line selection. -How to ride on the beach. -Exactly.

Start from the outside: you know where to end. I think regardless of whether they are good or not, it will be a fun event. -I don't think it matters what you say because this fan is so loud I can't hear. I like the course. I like obstacles. I used to do it, I grew up riding bikes and dirt bikes and stuff like that, so... It's fun. It's bumpy, but it's pretty. -Are you going to lock your front shock absorber? Probably. Yes, I think I could do it. I don't know if I'm a fan of the front shock or not. -Aren't you a fan? -I don't know if I am, yes. -Smoother ride but less energy transfer? -Yeah.
Very sure. But I want to say it's a smoother ride because there are quite a few bumps. But no, it's a fun track. It is perfect. Three rounds are going to be... -Wonderful. -Yeah. You're going to have problems if it's too hot. This test and the actual event will be two completely different things. No matter what, in three rounds you will be able to catch people. -Oh yeah, it doesn't matter where you start. I'm not sure how fast it took the other guys, but I'm thinking about 6, 6 and a half minutes. It's probably where you'll see a lot of us. -Where were you located in your Regional? -Four. -Does it seem strange to you that there are three places on the podium? -And they just left me aside?
Yes. -Is that strange? -Yes, I feel sorry for being there. No, it's okay, man. The only thing that matters is getting back here. I mean, no matter what, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th... I mean we all want to win, of course, but I mean it doesn't affect anything. The goal going in is to get to Carson or Madison, now. And then you just show up and perform when you get here, you know? The Games generally favor me more because there are more different strange objects, so I have a bit of an advantage when it comes to these things than, sometimes, typical CrossFit.
I'm looking forward to it. -How do you know Travis Mayer? He is from the Dirty South, Southeast region, so we have known each other for many years when I was the director there. -And he is a fairly positive and optimistic guy? Dude, he's a super positive guy. I really fear that sometimes he gets so excited that he urinates on himself. You are welcome. You came out hard, huh? It was difficult. -Do you know his era, by any chance? -6:51. -Nice. -You need to register here. -Alright. Thank you. I can't believe the guy who did the demo did it in 5:20 or something. -5:45, I think. -That's still fast. -That guy was also 5'9" and 103 pounds. -Are you serious? 103 pounds? -I mean, I'm making this up.
I don't know. I was going to say he needs to eat a sandwich -My dick is bigger thicker than the upper

of his body. -I'll have to trust that. -Talking between us. -How are you feeling? -Any problem with the bike? Wow, is it a standard question or did you ask it because it looks messy? -Wait, I want to tell you something -You don't look like you need medical attention -I thought I looked pretty good, what do you think? amazing! -How did it go? -What's the time? -Uh 6:25 -Okay! -The fastest time I've heard so far was 6. -Oh, that's good? -And 6:15 from Fraser with a 2nd place. -What surprised you about the course?
Just the little slopes I didn't think they were going to be as bad as they were and I probably started a little too hot, but I mean tomorrow it will be. a totally different rhythm. Because there's no way you can sustain that. -Do you feel triple the pressure this year than last year? Not at all. -But you have three times as many followers. Yeah, well, I appreciate all those followers but I don't put any pressure on myself, no. -I want you to know something. I don't believe you. -Any problem with the obstacle course? Mmm, there are some things that get you.
It's much bigger than I thought. I don't know. It's one of those where you have to figure out how to do it. And don't get too excited. But no, there are no surprises... It's like playing in the jungle gym: that opening goes up the trunk and then goes to the rope. Many people have trouble realizing that. What is happening there? Yes, that's different. That depends on you not wanting to go too fast. It's one of those where just taking two more seconds will give you a five-second lead. The obstacle course is fun. I like that. I mean, it's going to be difficult for everyone, of course.
But it's really fun. That's the good thing about this year. It's great that we can do the obstacle course and it's so fun that we can ride the bikes, even if I'm not the best at it, it's a fun opportunity to do it. -What is the decisive obstacle? First two. The cargo net and rope swing are undoubtedly the most technical. And because of the nature of being on the starting line, being the first two obstacles, those are the ones that will make everyone nervous. They're going to jump right in and try to be rushed and I think when they rush you on those technical moves, that's when mistakes are made.
His first time could be considered the fastest of the entire day. But they don't win the event because it has to be a performance consisting of three tests. -The cargo net looks like a ladder, just climb it. Yes, but if people don't climb correctly, you push yourself into the net and work much harder than necessary. Therefore, I don't think the cargo net is intended for quick climbing. You have to scale it gently so that if people run out of the "3...2...1...Go!" it's a race. Everyone wants to go fast. But if you think faster than you place your hands, you will simply fail.
You're going to put your foot in the net. You're going to make mistakes. If you're slow and smooth and you make a good move over the top and you drop and then you can take a second, you can swing and just control is going to be the name of the game. After that obstacle, with the bars in place, it's time to go. Go as fast as you can. But mistakes will be made at the first two hurdles. That will make or break the event. This is not the summary of the event. This is just the event overview of what is happening.
We're bringing back Big Bob. But now he's skinnier, so now he's Skinny Bob. -Sticks of hay! -Oh my God. The weights are not exact! The weights are not exact!
