Microsoft Flight Simulator Has A Secret - This Week In Retro 100

Mar 31, 2024
podcast app that's on android doesn't come directly from my podbean podcasts, so it's not included there. We should get at least 10,000 listeners a

week

and then as time goes on we get more listeners in addition to listening to the older episodes. so there are a lot of people listening to us, yeah, it's interesting to think about because I tend to show up on Mondays, we record the podcast and then I think we're all learning to do our normal jobs, our normal day jobs, if you like, we don't think too much about the numbers, um, and that's okay because the spirit behind the show is exactly what it was that day. one when John and I started, which is pick three stories, chat about

retro

news with friends and most of the time we deviate from the story we were talking about in the Waffle Kingdoms um, but you, the listeners, They seem to be okay with that, so if you're okay with that, we'll keep talking.

I hope I don't tip the balance too much into the realms of speech and, um, non-news, but I mean, I think we have a good balance, what do you think? I think really well, yeah, I know, the first, the first couple of episodes, my vision for

this

,

this

podcast quickly fell by the wayside because I envisioned kind of a short, to the point 30 minute thing. shows where we go over, you know, more stories than just three. I think my original idea was that we were going to have six, but we would keep our discussion to just five minutes per story and of course that wasn't sustainable for a couple of reasons: one, um, sometimes in the world of

retro

we don't There are six stories worth talking about and two, uh, when you do, when you know you start talking about something and that opens the door to a memory or something like that that you want to have.

More Interesting Facts About,

microsoft flight simulator has a secret this week in retro 100...

It's time to discuss it and you know the nostalgia factor is what people enjoy listening to, it gives them that warm fuzzy feeling so I'm glad that the show has pivoted and obviously like you said it's been very, very successful and that first show was 24 minutes and just by flipping through the shows I can see on the YouTube panel here, the longest I can watch was 1 hour and 19, which I think was just me and Chris in that episode, I don't know what that left . I'll see if I can find what the title must have been after I joined you.
microsoft flight simulator has a secret this week in retro 100
It was my instant thought. Yes, he was drunk. Happened. When Chris joins, I'm just trying to find him again and I can tell you what the themes were. that particular show, uh, scroll over here, we have yeah, Chris shows up when he was six, when he was eight, when he was nine, there at 12, when he was 17. Just go up, oh, there's 1 hour and 20 in there and the title of That's if you recorded games on VHS, that was episode 74. We also talked about Oregon Trail, um Free Steamed Scrolls, oh something to do with Elder Scrolls that always gets Chris talking and our game bars on the rise, so I probably had a There is a lot to say about Arcade bars.

I think that's probably why we got up to an hour and 20. So we were left with about an hour. I think we all came to an agreement that about an hour is a good time for the time it takes. dipping it in for Duncan to edit the episode one hour is about right and the time people have to listen so that's where we sit now and we try to keep it that way we're going to go over it massively today um but we try. um and uh yeah, more and more we also enjoy the company of guests to share even more memories with us about what we're talking about and their opinions and we'll hear from some of those past guests a little bit later in At the end of today's show we have some pretty clips for you, but lest we forget, it all started with an idea from one man, a man who dreamed of gathering as many egg-like men as possible and that man is John.
Schuler the OG, so welcome back John, it's a pleasure to have you here and I have to ask, are you a listener of the show since you hung up your retro headphones this

week

? Do you still listen? Oh yes, yes, yes. I'd be lying if I said I listened to every minute of every week, yes, but every time there's a story that piques my interest, I'll tell you. When it comes to this show, I'm your typical YouTube consumer where I checked out. In the thumbnail, you know, if that appeals to me, I'll tell you the stories I enjoy the most are still the stories about how you push hardware to its limits, like the one where you made Quake on the Spectrum.
I love stuff like that, I love watching the clips and again, Duncan from Duncan does a good job of inserting things so you have that visual component. I enjoy the program. Just, uh, because I do six other podcasts that are involved in Retro. scene sometimes I just need a break and oh yeah, I'll listen to you, uh, I'll listen to some podcasts that you know about other topics, but I really love the fact that every time I listen to you guys it sounds like you guys are just having a good time, because For me that is the most important thing.
Oh, that's nice to hear. Yeah, I totally get that comment about “I need to break out as someone who makes a lot of YouTube videos.” People often ask me what other retro YouTubers you watch. It's as if. I watch other retro YouTubers when I have headspace, but a lot of times I watch documentaries about old airplanes on YouTube and stuff like that that aren't retro because I'm giving myself a break of sorts. of overthinking these things, so yeah, I totally get it and I should point out that as long as John's headphones are on, I hope they're ready because you're always welcome back on the show anytime, John, you want. come back, dive in and get out, we love having you here Joe, that's very nice of you, I appreciate it, it was about the 61st show that the musical chairs happened and we welcomed new presenters to the show and that was Chris who came first, um, I knew you Chris through your YouTube channel, agama005 um, or is it agima, sorry, agima 005, is Amiga 500 backwards, there is no right or wrong way.
I'm saying it's not a screen, so I was aware of you since then. and also your general likability on the cave Discord server, um and of course, head like an egg, so his profile fit perfectly, so I invited him on the show. Chris, just tell us about your memories of going on the show and when you started, yeah, well. I'm really glad you mentioned that you were quite nervous when you started the program, obviously with all your experience, because for me it was exactly the same, and I think it was twofold. I mean, yeah, I was running my own channel, but to begin with, it was a young channel anyway, but it was about my own journey, my own memories, my own nostalgia, so I can get away with anything, because you know, it's not like I'm trying to be technically accurate or anything.
That, um, coming to a show where the listeners actually choose the stories, there's a bit of research involved which adds an extra factor that I wasn't used to, but also meeting yourself, Neil, yeah, that was virtual, but there was a nervousness An important element of that too is that what I've enjoyed about this journey and being a part of this show is doing the show, but more than that, the friendship that has been slowly forming between you and me, and also with Dave joining on board. And I feel like I've been able to relax a lot more with you, now it was a little sparse at first and now it flows very naturally because we know each other and I think that's what it means. it comes across very well to the listeners, so yeah, yeah, it's great to be a part of this.
I have to say the highlight of my year this year was you came to visit us from Australia and you came to the cave so it was really nice you know, building on that friendship and really being able to meet you in person absolutely and I appreciate your time. I will thank you again. I really appreciate it too much, yeah, and then the show settled on them with Chris yelling I'm not a real Australian and um and so we continued with the format and then for no other reason I think we just enjoyed hearing the memories and opinions of The rest of us and we thought wouldn't it be cool to have an even broader perspective on these things, that's when I asked Dave to join us and that was around show number 75, so Dave is the baby of the group.
Dave joined in and you know they say the Scottish accent is the most reliable in the world. Have we been right to trust you for these? last 25 shows, Dave, absolutely no, no, I spent the last 25 shows trolling you in every way possible, including the show notes, including complaining about Chris nowhere. I hope I have contributed something, the feedback we get from people is amazing what people are talking about. how is it a weird part of your Saturday or Sunday routine to hear this and that, I have no idea what it means to hear that from someone that you're making someone's weekend a little and the numbers just don't try to imagine More than 15 people listening to this doesn't make sense, but yes, a lot of people do.
I enjoy very much. It's great to come here on Monday and record. I hope to talk to you too. It's always a pleasure to talk to Neela anyway, but. Neil is so busy he's so busy talk to him to get the chance to talk to Neil um it's unusual because he's very pressed for time at the moment hopefully, hopefully Neil you can sort that out in January um but you've been saying that for about a year and a half now, well yes I have hired some help to help me move forward so I hope that works out properly once I train in January but yes no you make a good point with my business, This is It's kind of a therapy session for me because it means I get to sit and talk without distractions, phones out of the chat with you guys and that's a really good thing.
In fact, I really enjoy it for that reason. I always leave them hanging until the last moment. with the show notes because I don't get to them until the last minute, so I should apologize for that, that should be my New Year's resolution for 2023, but we all know that won't be fixed, you understand why, although I want to say that we understand. why is that so is that when I don't do the show notes until the last minute I have less of an excuse than you this is true this is true and uh speaking of positive comments about the people who listen to us on Saturday mornings and things like that I have to Say every time John reappears on the show like he did last time, a lot of positive comments about John's professionalism and breadth of knowledge.
Everyone loves it when you come here, John, so for anyone who wants to listen. for John, you don't have to be without John, you can have a John in your life, as he mentioned, he still has six other podcasts where people can find you, John, if they want. Probably the best place, the best place to see everything. at the same time it's Amigos Retro Gaming on YouTube, yeah like I said I do it with my friend Aaron and I do six shows about different retro computers so the longest show we're on is week 100, we just finished the episode. 377 wow from Friends uh, we've been doing that every week since July 2015.
And at least we have the longest running Amiga podcast in the world, there you go, yeah, we need to get you into the Guinness record books or something, there will be a category for that, yes, but I think people like to hear, you know, even though the Amiga isn't technically a European computer, it sort of wasn't a factor in the United States, you know, people like hear an American perspective on things. like you know the ZX Spectrum, the Amiga, uh, other retro computers, so if that sounds like something you might want to spend some time with, uh, yeah, check it out, come on, you heard it here first.
Amiga was not an American computer, see you. in the comments section so, John, this is a question. We'll ask our listeners later, so think, listeners, what would you like to see on the next 100 shows? What would you like to change? Would you like something? to change what you'd like to see more or less this week in retro is that any feedback you can give us, if there's one thing I've learned it's that the hardware is very popular and therefore any history it has. I can do that. I remember doing a story with you, Neil, about a 486 um supercharged computer and I mean, that was probably the biggest episode I was on this week on retro and I think any story you can get me to talk about, you know , speed. old hardware improvements I love that stuff, I think it's cool because then I started thinking about what would happen if I plug it into this machine, you know, but in general I really feel like you have to make sure that whatever you do, everyone has fun because The moment it starts to feel like work, the audience will know that they will know and uh and and it's, it's not good and that's what you guys have been able to maintain and again I think bringing in Dave was a big plus in that. which in a way allows you to share the load a little more and you also have two different people to balance your thoughts and it really does feel like sitting in a pub talking to your friends and that's it. atmosphere of the show I really enjoy, so keep it up, it'swell, I think those are very good comments, so yes, the

secret

to a good podcast is to maintain a level of unprofessionalism, yes, and that's where Duncan comes in and does a very good job. job of knowing what to leave out and what to cut out and making things flow and be friendly and make it enjoyable, let's listen and on the topic of Hardware, our most viewed episode is actually You and Me, John on October 23, 2021 .it was a 6502 fpga processor that you could put in, uh, I guess for you that's actually the exact story I was thinking of 26 but it was the Super chart, yeah, yeah, uh, which had 25,000 views, um , the next closest was 16,000 views.
So that's by far the biggest episode and, um, R2 cropped the thumbnail you're pointing to, uh, processor, that's what the thumbnail is really about, so that's what I did, so that's our most viewed episode. , that's the goal, to aim for the longer term, and of course I mentioned Duncan, so we can't have a discussion about the show without mentioning the powerful dunk producer who works so hard. every week to turn our ramblings into a spectacle. I don't think he's ever complained about missing a deadline or throwing a diva tantrum like Dave does every week. I never did that once and, um, John, I think Duncan works on your shows too, yeah.
Did he create all of our opening animations? And he also does a lot for The Amigos Retro Gaming community. So, I mean, he talks about a team player and, like you said, someone who delivers on time all the time. he's ready, he's the glue that holds the show together, so thank you Duncan, do you want to say thank you to Duncan too, absolutely of course, wow, on behalf of these wretches, thank you so much Duncan for everything you do now. We have some of our past guests on the show a little later, to answer the same question John answered there: What would you like to see in the next 100 shows?
What would you like us to change or not? we'll hear about them later at the end of the show until then, enough, uh, naval gaze. I think let's get into the news proper, it's no

secret

that Neil and I are big Flight Sim fans, uh, but you might be surprised to hear that. I really don't like Microsoft's

flight

simulator

and there's a reason it's boring. And don't get me wrong, simulation is amazing, especially these days and, you know, always in the context of the technology of the time, as well as in terms of previous versions, but commercial

flight

s are boring, it's bus drivers from the sky and I say this as someone who has had a good partner, yes, oh, the comments probably from my partner, in fact, I am about to mention them because I have a good partner who is a commercial pilot and I have great respect for him.
He's worked hard to get there and of course it's a dream job for a lot of people, but yeah, it's boring. I thought if he had done it. I would like to have a pilot's license and there are lots of opportunities here in Australia to do this sort of thing, water pumps for bushfires, that sort of thing, you know, air ambulance, cattle fighting, you can even do it in a helicopter, which apparently is incredibly dangerous and a lot of people die doing it, but you know it would be more exciting than just picking up travelers and dropping them off at the next bus stop, but anyway, anyone who has been a passenger on a long-haul flight knows how incredibly boring flying actually is.
Yes, it is exciting during takeoff and landing and when the beverage cart arrives and that's it. Microsoft Flight Sim, uh, sorry Microsoft, has addressed this in a fantastic 40th anniversary update to Ms. Flight Simulator. You'll see if you load the game. Diamond da62 airplane you can use the cockpits game screen to play, yes even as a virtual pilot you can relieve your long haul boredom without needing to chat with the cabin crew, you can simply play a game with the instruments to pass the time hours and what game they will allow you to play in Ms Flight Simulator.
Well, it's Ms Flight Simulator again, so basically it will allow you to play the 80's versions of Ms Flight Simulator, from version one that came out in 1982 until version four in 1989. Dave with the ability to fly a Sim inside the Sim encourages you to fly more Sims or you know what happens if they let you watch a movie while trying to open a package of peanuts without expelling the contents through all the controls talking to fly. Long haul I don't hate it, I don't like everything, take off your shoes, take off your belt, but when I'm on the plane, I'm sitting down, I know it's me and I can take out my e-book.
I can put on some podcasts or something. Time flies for me. I'm quite happy sitting in a fight, but not at all what you're talking about. I want combat. I want missions. I went to primary and secondary objectives. I want extra objectives. I want to join the Emperor's Secret Order, in fact, I want to play Tie Fighter. um no, I do. I like your flight sim, but not as much as you and Neil, but I just don't. I have no real interest. by playing this um I know a lot of people do it and I don't want them to feel like I don't want me to say their hobbies are bad, it's just not for me.
I know March Central, for example, loves to do it and they'll fly over the cave and if someone is talking about doing something somewhere they'll use an excuse to fly over there and see it and they really enjoy it so I appreciate the technology and I understand their attractive, but it's not for me, no. That's fair enough. Long haul, what is the longest flight you have ever taken? Long haul, Dave, I think I used to have. I used to have a place in America. Saw a place in Florida and I'm trying to remember if the longest one I've ever done too.
I've been to Las Vegas and I'm trying to remember if I've flown. I don't think I flew to Las Vegas from the UK. I think I've flown to the US and then changed different flights so the longest one is probably from the UK to Florida, yeah the farthest I've flown was probably around the same day I went to San Diego, but I think I changed, maybe I changed to Houston and then I jumped. I think Dallas possibly, yeah, maybe there's Dallas, everything I remember about that trade. airport in the middle was that they had a Bubba Gump shrimp and I was like it was a chain, yeah, and I was like, oh, this is a real thing, so it's not just a Forest Girl thing, it's not really a real thing, it was created after by Forrest.
Gump, oh, it came later, okay, yeah, yeah, it's total marketing on the back of the movie, so as far as I'm concerned those are all short hops, 16 and a half hours from Perth to the UK, you guys are just talking about local Jordans once I've started once you've taken off your shoes and belts and everything else, you're sitting on your flight and you're assuming that the seat is comfortable enough that your legs won't hurt. knees, then six. hours later it's 10 or 16 hours, not a big difference, yeah, how many belts do you wear Dave, while we're talking about the flight

simulator

?
I actually have a physical copy of the latest flight simulator and we talk about this a lot. The thing about flight simulators is the manual. Well, it comes with a gatefold box with all the DVDs. How many do we have? We have 10 DVDs here. So 10 DVDs I won't unfold them all, but 10 DVDs to install, but the manual. It looks like a ladybug book. I'm holding it here. It's like my first book about a flight simulator or something. It is only 76 pages. It has an A5 size. It is not a flight simulator manual. So, yes, but what a flight.
John, for me, one of the big tests of boredom in a game is if I'm ever tempted to put an iPad in front of my screen while I'm playing to watch something else or do something else I just think about what I'm doing what I'm doing here and I've seen it, I've seen it so many times with games like Elite Dangerous where you'll see people flying on these missions and they'll take pictures. of themselves they say, yeah, I'm watching the new Boba Fett while I'm doing this and it's like at what point does the game stop being a game?
I mean, you could also just put in an interactive screensaver. in the background and I feel like you can make a game that involves long distance travel and make it interesting so that you're not doing anything in the meantime, you just need to introduce a minigame system, for example, you know, maybe you're flying in Long Haul, but once you get up in the air, you have to take care of the drink cart service, you know, or something like that. Neil, well, this is the problem being addressed, isn't it Chris? Incorporating a game within a game, so that's all good, yes, it's very possible which game you'd prefer Jordan to play, so if you're on the flight sim and they'll let you play well, it has to be something that reflects the overall flight , you already know. your performance your performance should be judged by how well you get from point A to point B, but you can increase your score, you can increase your pilot rating if you perform these other tasks, they ask you well, so again it is presented as if it were a way to do it. wasting time it's like this is what you have to do if you want to do the best job you can at this along the way, you have to be involved all the time, you know, yeah, I really like John's idea about the streetcar service, like that I think this should be a two game game, it's in virtual reality, one of you has to fly the stunt course while the other is behind pushing the cart in virtual reality, there go the drinks and then your points combined by complete the circuit and serve. the drinks are together and that's your bonus score if there are no spills fantastic no spills in the cabin or in the drinks service yes pretty good Neil I mean you've already given a lot of your thoughts but I saved you by the end you know that a starting level is enough or would you need another Sim within the Sim um maybe how is this how is it working? this is an emulator running inside the screen it should be yes ok I wonder how long yes how.
How long will it take for someone to hack it so you can open the MS-DOS screen and run whatever you want there? You can play with it, but then you come back to the same point that John said, which is you. We are trying to create entertainment to distract you from what is supposed to be entertainment. It does not make any sense. I totally agree with John on that. Anyway, the full patch notes tell us a little more about what you're getting. This so you get a true-to-life Airbus A310 passenger plane, two helicopters and 14 heliports. It's good to see these additional aircraft.
Actually, I guess there are no microtransaction payments or anything for these, you just get them as part of the upgrade. right, I don't actually know what you should do if they're in the patch notes, um, two gliders and 15 glider airports, there's actually a glider airport on the top of the hill next to the cave, so I don't know if ours is included in There were the same seven famous hysterical airplanes, including the Hughes H4 Hercules, also known as the Spruce Goose, uh, that was the um, that was the plane-boat, wasn't it like that with all the other crazy ones playing?
I think you're in the jars, man. Yeah, okay, four classic commercial airports, 24 classic missions from the franchise's past and, um, that last point actually interests me a lot. I mean taking the Ms Flight Sim as a whole. Do you think it's boring now? That's right, Chris, that's who you are. telling us did you always think it was boring? Yeah, we'll come back to when I play with him a little bit later, but yeah, I played with him for a while, but overall I found him, yeah, a little bit, yeah, driver, yeah, so that's gone, Dave. I'm wondering if maybe someone like Mark Central, for example, who plays these Flight Sims, people play Flight Sims and when not much is happening, they still sit there immersed and still enjoy it, does that happen or does everyone have do something to jump and divert their attention I don't know, you can speed up time, can't you on these?
So yeah, there's that if I think too if you surround yourself with, you know, a console full of flashy button boxes. alternative lights and displays you're looking at, you're monitoring everything and that's where the build your own cockpit kind of comes into play, um, I'm completely convinced that most of those meters only exist to enter, you know, occupy. the pilot moment when they are on those long flights, this is the point really, isn't it a good flight? The Sim is a Sandbox and you can create whatever type of game you want within it, whether you know the engines fail at a certain point in the flight, whether it's just take off and landing, whether it's stakes flying around snakes, yeah , snakes, whether it's Snakes on a plane flying around areas that you're familiar with and just visually recognizing that you've got the chicken, okay, it's completely up to you, that's how Dave wants to play.
I might want to play my flights in a different way, but we've moved on from the early days of the Flight Sims, those early days where you'd just ignore it and enjoy the novelty of an open world. The Sims of Flight was one of the earliest examples of elite open-world games.like a space flight Sim and is one of the biggest open world games we had at the time. We were able to enjoy the ever-improving flight dynamics and that wasn't always necessarily restricted to Ms. Flight Sim, things like unlimited flight came out that had this really advanced fluid dynamics.
So it was all based on flight models based on how things move underwater and then adapted to the sky, but then these things fed back. Flight sim would catch up again. with its next iteration and keep up with the competition John Neil I have a question since you are the nicest flight of all of us, how deep do you go? I mean, I know that ground level guy is having a hotas. set it up where you have this more realistic type of stick, but you can take it, you know there's the Sim pit with the surrounding screens, I mean, in your ideal flight Sim setup, how immersive do you need it to be to have fun?
Well I think that whole question is really being answered now with VR as long as the Flight Sims are updated so you can hit all the switches and that's getting better and better as the resolution of VR headsets improves. virtual reality. When they first became widespread, everything was a little blurry and had this kind of screen door effect in virtual reality, so it was a novelty, but it wasn't quite right, but I'm looking forward to playing with a virtual reality headset upright for viewing only. how much better this has gotten and how well games have adapted to support VR, it's not perfect because you know you're still effectively blind outside of your VR headset so you can't really see if you're trying to press certain things, but if everything has been built from the ground up for virtual reality, then that's great and that's why I'm so excited about this game um B17 that we talked about last week because it's built from the ground up supposedly for virtual reality, I should really admit it.
Well, so, yes, ask me five years ago and I would have told you that you know seven pieces, they are all networked controlling a different screen and managing everything in one cockpit, but all that has been replaced in In My Head by virtual reality and a good stick and a good throttle, um. Yeah, and then you know we've seen improvements in graphics over the years, we've seen the failure, which was Ms. Flight, which was just a horrible saga where Microsoft tried to turn every flight in the world into a microtransaction based system, starting with a single island and you had to buy your way off that island to fly around the rest of the world.
It failed horribly and rightly so too. I'm so glad it did and then we saw the Glorious return with the current flights where it was kept a secret for years and then they announced it and everyone loved it and it was a return to form for Flight Sim. It's fantastic, but unlike those early days, I'm not surprised by the novelty of the open world. I mean, that's nice. It's normal now and it's not as impressive to see a small micro with a round measured in kilobytes produce an open world, a huge open world, as is the machine with 32 gigs of RAM and effectively unlimited storage, since these games now They transmit data from the cloud.
So it's not that impressive, well it's an impressive technical feat, but it doesn't melt your face like it doesn't work the way it wants to, yeah, exactly that, so I'm really looking forward to the challenges and I really like the fact. who have added some of these challenges again. So if you're not feeling creative enough to make some of your own, you can accept the challenges they're throwing at you and I'd like to see more of them. Those, so I think Ms Flight Sim is in a good place now, yeah cool, it's actually the last one that almost made me do it again, but I just don't have a powerful enough machine, that's my problem so That's the only reason I have.
I didn't venture into this again. I've given you a little bit of direction because, yes, you can play, you know, these '80s versions of Microsoft Flight Sim within Microsoft Flight Sim on the instruments of this plane, but apparently only when you're on the runway, so in you can't really use it to relieve your boredom on the flight, sorry guys, health and safety, you crash the plate now, they don't really like that, but you can have a huge iPad sized screen in a Tesla. anyway, but yeah, no, there's a certain method to unlock the easter egg, which is essentially what it is, so I'll leave you to look into that when the program notes the links in the description, all that kind of stuff um, but yeah, despite my sarcasm Ms Flight Sim has a lot of fans and I actually have fond memories of at least trying to fly to Bigen Hill, um, it would have been Microsoft Flight Sim.
I want to say 95 but I actually remember there was a helicopter there so that means it would be Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 if I had the Bell Ranger and I had hours of fun even trying to float the Bell Ranger and keep it stable and then landing it back on the platform, really very difficult to do, but anyway, thanks. to galdi for alerting us to this story and to Microsoft for giving us this nostalgic nod to the beginnings of the franchise carefully hidden in the latest update who knows what wonders of flight a new barbershop will simulate in another 40 years with The retro games premiered in Gloucester sent to Town Center, so I thought I'd pick this week an important topic for us, especially since our listeners have brought it up several times and that's the fact that listeners think we're all bald, I know. look Julius, Ginger head here as you can see here um as you can listen also for our listeners Dave for our listeners and listeners you have to trust me, you build trust in the other, trust me, I have a luxurious head of real hair um of the photos, I think we all spend a lot of our time at The Barbers getting our hair cut, so Neil, can you tell me about your hair care regime?
My hair care regimen consists of a handful of Nivea starting at the back of my head and sliding to the front of my head until my head is fully hydrated that's my haircut routine John every Thursday under my shower and I take the Remington head shaver uh and I give myself a couple of these and then I'm good for the nice week and Chris you guys are dedicated basically what happens with mine is it starts to grow until it looks horrible and then the wife says: they're not going to go out looking like that and I sit down and shave it.
Oh, ask someone to do it. hair for you oh yeah I have my own blind barber yeah oh yeah a couple of clippers for me and it's taken me a few years to get the skill of cutting blind hair properly you're doing it yourself with the clippers but yeah , finally, uh I made it, I think at least on the top of my head, not the front of my face, it turns out that there is a perfect solution for us, at least for one of us. Local Dr has shared a story from gloucestershire live about a new barbershop. in Gloucester town center they called the two barrel barbershop now Sabrina Rimmer, who is presumably no relation to Arnold, has decided that her barbershop would be upgraded with its games and drinks area, now Neil, are you worried that this end the viability of the cave or More seriously, what do you think of the idea of going to The Barbers to get ready, maybe cut your beard and really enjoy the experience, maybe meet a couple of friends there for a drink a drink again was an interesting idea, um, the first observation I would make?
In this live news story from Gloucestershire they have a photo of the space and how big that space is. You've seen? This is a huge space which makes everything seem small and is so big that there is a pool table. In the middle and then at the other end there are what I think are two or maybe three arcade machines against a wall. There's also one of those basketball machines where you have to make as many baskets as you can, John, what's it called? You know that's always in American movies where they're shooting basketballs in the game room.
I don't know if it's called a basketball game, a basketball game, there you go, you heard it here first um and uh and then there's this huge floor with nothing on it, they have a huge space to fill and I think when I look closely at those rooms of games I think they are unique arcade machines. Does anyone agree with me if they see them? Yes, I thought so, which is fair. Enough and uh there's a police for arcade machines, why not? They're not if you put them next to a normal arcade machine like the one you have downstairs with Alex, of course, they don't look good, but in certain circumstances, an arcade machine, why not? okay, I think for this purpose let's fight, the big advantage of those machines is low maintenance, they will just work, yes, in fact, they are probably under warranty if they stop working, so in a situation like this, you can get them.
They don't advertise themselves as a real retro arcade, it's a hair salon with a place to relax and play, so I'm not going to hold that against them in any way. I love the idea of taking the trip to the barbershop and making it more fun so why not hang out and have a coffee and play some games on a furry pool table? You know that sounds good. It's not a euphemism if you just got a haircut and are going to play pool. to get a hairy pool table, right? Yeah, I wonder about that, I wonder about the health aspect of it, you know, if you're having a pint there'll be hair flying, I mean that's the nature of a barbershop and there's nothing less appetizing than freshly cut hair from someone on your pint of miles oh wow Harry the dog okay yeah yeah but yeah I think it's a good creative thought to try to make your business more successful. you're a hairdresser, let's get more people into the hair salon who maybe don't even need a haircut, let's sell those drinks, they can play some games, just make more money that way.
I think it's good creative thinking, especially since they have so much. space up there make use of that space um, but it got me thinking if there's a better name for it if it's going to be arcade you have the two barrels it's not a bad name, but you know, could it be called something like that? Mortal Kombat gold cheats shave game Batman or just a taper, you know, Tapper without the I. I think Mortal Kombat is the yeah, yeah, there you go, that's our suggestion and then rename it Mortal Kombat Chris not Dave, so what Sabrina has provided, who assumes she is not a teenage witch.
In the photo we have a play area that is a pool table, a retro Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat arcade machine dartboard, as well as a small children's play area. Men who come here to get their hair cut can take a little time. for themselves and sit and have a drink and use the games before. We are also in the process of applying for an alcohol license which we hope to have by Christmas so people can come and have a mulled wine or beer while they are there. here a lot of moms who brought their kids played pool with them and one kid wondered why his mom was so good at the game Pac-Man, which I thought was funny, so initially I thought it was a bit of a silly story and silly.
It's not a great idea, but the more I think about it, the more I realize it's actually a good idea. I want somewhere I can go that's not just about drinking and meeting my friends, so. I thought about the idea that it's not that bad, John, yeah, well, when you went to the barbershop, when I, in my hair days, um, when I rocked the reverse mohawk, uh, um, I went to the barber to get my hair cut. hair, but Of course you want to go to the hairdresser to have a good conversation to feel relaxed and you want to have something to kill your time while you wait because I don't know how barbershops work in the UK or Australia, but there are no appointments here, you show up and you wait until it's, yeah, and sometimes it's busy and sometimes it's not, and if you can, you know, go back a couple, play a game of Pac-man and then you turn around, hey, it's my time to go.
I mean it's a great business model, yeah, so I like the idea of maybe showing up once a month to meet my friends there, we all go there for just three or four hours, we sit, we chat, we have a drink, a cup of tea, a Coke, a beer, whatever, play some games, chat, get a haircut and then go, and that sounds like a good idea to me, yeah, and John, can you imagine giving up? to your head, shaving in the shower and doing something like this for uh? to meet one or two friends and get absolutely scalped, I think it's a great last night, you know, because again you go to the hairdresser and you want to have a good conversation while you're getting a haircut if you're surrounded by your friends, they They're talking, the barber is talking, you know, everyone's having a good time, that sounds fantastic, it sounds like a great social activity that has a real purpose behind it, what they need is a taxiso you can show up and be a barbershop foursome yeah I love it Chris what about you?
Well, he was thinking. I mean, I might be tempted to get my hair cut somewhere other than home, but my hairdressers are very handsome. I like to hang out in the kitchen and get my hair cut. but something like this wouldn't really be fun but what it really reminds me of is the fact that you know arcades weren't always in an arcade so this is almost reminiscent of what you know you saw arcade machines in the chip shop in sports centers and pubs, so why shouldn't they go back to something like a barbershop? That's why I like this idea.
Yes, you bring up a good point. Chris, a board game store just opened here. In my city they have an arcade section that is exactly the same as what you have here, you have four one-up arcade machines, you know, that's a way of incorporating games that don't work. to break the bank so I think you're going to start seeing this more and more often with this proliferation of 200 300 one-up arcade machines yeah cool Neil yeah. I was reading a comment that appeared on the channel yesterday regarding this Little Jenny story hi Jenny, thanks for listening who just says welcome to this week of hair memories because we had a discussion about our hair last week so so may become a common theme for the next 100 hair memory shows. and I have to say that if I were going to a barbershop today, I would want my beard done, but I would probably feel a little shortchanged if I paid for a full haircut just to shave my hair. or cut, so I think these games will be free, I think they will reload later Boss, okay, but yeah, I like the idea of this.
I think the idea of maybe on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon saying, "Okay, three or four hours we'll meet." there for a drink and a beard cut and a haircut it's nice to do it you always feel that when I cut my beard myself it's fine, but if I go there it's straight lines, it's cleaner and it's something nice that smells to you okay so yeah I think so if you're in the area if you're in the Gloucester area then come in get a haircut and let us know in the subreddit or in the YouTube comments how it went and thank you so much John for joining us on this special. episode 100 I hope you join us again in the future but it's been great catching up John so take care thanks Sean it's always a pleasure guys bye cheers John bye now it's time to the question of the week from our community. last week we asked well, we said next week is the 100th episode, I can't believe it, here we are, believe it, do you have any suggestions for things we could change?
How to keep the same for next 100 shows? Would you like to see more on the show or would you like to see less on the show? None of the presenters, please, and do you think we've done well? Let us know what you think before we move on to your answers um and many of you have participated and posted all this huge amount of comments there so thank you to everyone who participated um we'll come read them shortly, but as I mentioned before, some of our previous guests we recorded some videos for us, we have about seven minutes of videos, I think we'll go now and see what you have to say, we'll get back to your thoughts, great question guys, what I'd like to see is the three of you se Face each other in a custom league in the sensible world of football, play each other once and see who is the champion.
I'd love to know that I'm Ross and when I'm not playing Rise of the Robots, I'm listening this week on retro, seriously guys I want to congratulate you on your 100th episode. This is a fantastic achievement and I've been here with you every week . Enjoy the podcast very much. What I would like to see in the next 100 episodes. Hmm, that's an interesting question, but what I would like to see is an episode, just one episode, where every game you talk about, Chris can say I've played it, looking forward to the next 100 episodes, guys, good morning, Neil Chris, Dave Duncan, congratulations. in 100 episodes this week in retro and thank you for inviting me to have some fun with you in episode 69.
I really enjoyed it and it was an absolute blast. Chris recently asked me what I would like to see. between now and episode 200. and well, I thought about it and well, there are 101 things I would like to see. I'd like to see 100 more episodes, but I'd also like to see Duncan reveal his face to us if I can do it. Reveal my face, so can you friend? It's not as difficult as you think. Thanks again for all the retro-themed entertainment over the years, guys, and I look forward to seeing many more episodes in the future. Greetings, guys.
Hey guys, this week on retro, you're doing a fantastic job. I can't believe you've made it to episode 100. You know, I really enjoyed coming and I enjoy listening to it every week, plus it's really good when I'm ironing. I can iron out a little bit of this week in retro and yeah, it's kind of momentous to get to episode 100. I really enjoy the dynamic that you guys have, like there's a little bit of wit and stuff between them. uh the Atari Amiga and he likes the dust stuff, Neo really knows this kind of PC and Dos gaming, which is really cool to hear.
I also love Chris' Amiga stories, but also Dave kind of teases him and teases him and uh, choosing the most unusual kind of stories too, so it's a really nice dynamic and I think what I'd love to see before episode 200 would be for you guys to explore systems you don't know about, so I think that would be really cool. maybe just total alien systems, you could have an alien systems episode where you go out and find new stories, investigate and play some parts and get out of your comfort zone, that would be a lot of fun.
I'd love to see some. like Mac stuff and, yeah, just some systems that maybe weren't as popular in the kind of region of Europe and Australia and stuff because there's a lot of weird stuff out there, but I really enjoy listening to it and whatever you do. I'm sure it would be great, so bring on episode 200. Hey guys, I'm your guy. Friend Aaron just wanted to stop by to wish everyone on this retro weekend a happy anniversary. 100 episodes, a brilliant feat. I have cut every episode, it is my decision. to show when I drive to and from prisons now with all that said every show has room for improvement believe me I know and I think one thing that would help the show a lot is more coverage of the bad games you guys cover the latest. hot on this you guys cover all the classic GLA but where is the coverage of the bad games? where is the coverage of the games that no one liked, that no one bought, that people didn't have enough time to finish, these are the games that are crying out for more?
Heads up, in fact, I would like to see a room in the RMC Mill Museum dedicated solely to bad games, kind of like the store, except in this store all the games are cut out, all the games are in a bargain bin and there are a lot of loose games. cartridges everywhere I think the public would really love it now. I'd love to see the entire staff of this evil retro get together and vote down the 100 worst games of all time. There are many of them now that I don't want. to influence the vote, but since I've played many games over the years, I can safely say that there are a lot of bad games on all systems, but there could only be one Top Banana.
I look forward to that show for sure until then again, happy 100th anniversary, keep going gentlemen, and until next time, bye, hello everyone, me, machine, Dean, here, I hope you're well. They asked me to record a video for the next hunt. Wait a minute, here we go, so yes, they asked me. to record a video for the 100th episode as I was a previous guest on one of those episodes which I'm incredibly proud of so yeah I think the podcast has been growing in leaps and bounds it's brilliant to see the community starting to arrive. together and is really starting to experience some good growth.
I think it's a really nice community, people share ideas and some very interesting articles sometimes in the Reddit group, but in my opinion the whole setup you guys have works absolutely fantastic. really, very well done and many congratulations on reaching the first 100. What would I like to see in the next episode 200 or 100 to take you to 200? Well, there are two things. The first thing I would like to see is a bit of a live element, so possibly some of the episodes that are broadcast live could bring some interesting results from having people in the live chat, but possibly you know some game elements in line.
I don't know if maybe there's a retro game online or something. To the extent that we can all collaborate and play together as one big horde of retro fans this week, there must be something out there that can meet the demands we need, but that's one idea, the second idea is for this man. to play more games yeah the fake aussie and chris need to play more games in my opinion because right now he has played five games. I think in this whole life of gaming I joke with Chris, I joke, but what I mean is that you could have a very interesting game.
A short five minute segment where someone makes a suggestion about the game you're going through. I don't know of a hat or any kind of way to select that game. You choose it, play it for five minutes and give your opinion on it. Obviously with him. being a retro game, that way you can build up your repertoire of how many games you've actually played, so there you have it, so a couple of suggestions from me, but again, big congratulations on the first 100, I think they're absolutely excellent. what you've managed to achieve and here's the next 100 and let's get to that 200 mark anyway from my machine Dean I'm signed now take care everyone and a big thank you to our previous guests James Ross from the robots uh Oz retro comp uh Ravi Ravi Abbott Aaron um from the retro gaming and meme machine Friends Dean, thank you so much for those comments a big round of applause from Dave uh we've had some great guests and you know we haven't had a ton of guests on the show but the who have been have been great, Dan Wood, we also had Dan Wood on the show recently, as recently as last week and, well, I think Dave, you've been working on getting some more guests. for future shows and they are not necessarily big names that we have chosen, some of them are big names that we have, we have some very interesting guests, but that doesn't really matter because we are all just sharing our opinions and our nostalgic memories, there are no right answers or incorrect, they are your own memories and no matter how famous you are or not, it's nice to hear all those different opinions, so I'm really happy.
I'm pleased with what you've been working on Dave and the guests you have lined up. You've been working really hard on it and you've worked hard on previous guests, but my word is we have some fun shows coming up. for the next hundred and more so I'm looking forward to that and now let's hear your answers to the same question so we'll dive into the subreddit now and the first one is from Richard Shears, Chris, maybe. You'd like to read it sure Neil so Richard says totally honest this is my favorite podcaster thanks Richard my favorite show across the board so what to change make Dave's housework a feature permanent, maybe yes, it seems to be the week.
Yes, yes, it seems like it is, doesn't it? He also says that the guest of the week is a good addition as it allows for another point of view with variety. I appreciate it as much as possible. Yes, it's a good idea. As for the favorite, well, that's easy. the furriest among you Johnny uh where's Johnny Johnny the cat um there he is the candy jar it's open and here he comes oh Johnny He's been coming a long time ago he steals the show he takes a gift from his hand so for all the listeners Dave has uh on his desk here we go seriously though you four work well together maybe Duncan can make a guest appearance yeah great thanks Rich.
Yeah, well, yeah, it's not for not trying Duncan, we'll get you here someday, but um. I think it might take a 1000 show and it will have to be bigger than the 100 show for Duncan to appear here, but we'll keep working on it. I'm going to give Richard a big upvote for that, thanks Richard, that was really cool. good answer from you Dave, do you want to read the next answer? Yes, it's by Paul icky hamski, you should take it in tongues to lay down the gauntlet, pick a game to challenge each other to a high score challenge, we could do that, we could do that. no week two weeks, I mean, there's almost no time in the week, but yeah, we can make that video.
I watch high school channels, maybe other people involved in that. I like that idea. Yeah, well, we have a new high score system here in the cave that at the same timepeople seem to love it we were updating it this weekend when we had a public day people interested in seeing its name illuminated I wonder if I can find a way to make it accessible on the web so people can see what the cave's high scores are and you know maybe we could mention it on the show if someone beats a high score or something. The thing is, I know Chris is like me, if they give us a high score challenge, we'll take it.
That challenge continues and we will become obsessed with it and we will waste all our free time, free time, which I know has exactly good grades, so in my opinion, it's a very dangerous jar to walk away from that, let's do it next. the answer comes from the Lord for 445 uh he says his show is my favorite Saturday morning cartoon for those of us who remember why it was the highlight of the week. I really like the different perspectives that the guests and hosts bring to the conversations and it would be great to hear more global perspectives in the mix from North America etc., keep up the great work guys, 100 episodes gives you a card from the Monarch or are they just birthdays, no letters, unfortunately, you have a good point, actually one of the What attracted me most to doing this show in the first place was John's involvement to get that North American perspective and I love when he shows up and someone from North America comes to give us that perspective because sometimes they just start talking about things assuming that I would know like we do with them and it's like whoa whoa whoa whoa, that's not normal, tell us everything because you know, that sounds very different, it sounds very interesting and I love when that happens, so I'm really looking forward to getting it. more North American guests on um Dave, do we have North American guests lined up? three at least three at least three perfect and um guests from anywhere else in the world as well, so there you look forward to them and there are many other great answers from a pixel generation lurkio 78 77 for Jacko 6502, who has probably been with us From the beginning, I am making comments.
It's great to have you here Dr. local, uh crg, hi Glenn, with a comment, Chris, the only reader, Glens, no he wasn't there. I'm going to read another one, but I just want to say go back to the one you read, Neil. I just want to say it's so big. I see it as a huge compliment when people say it's something like this Saturday morning cartoon and quite a few people have had similar comments. I get the same feeling when I listen to what I see on certain YouTube channels. A Sunday morning is when I relax and it's the same feeling that really gets you into being a teenager, so for me it's just a huge compliment that this is it. how we fit into your lifestyle, it's fantastic, so thank you for that, it really is.
It's really the reason I didn't want Chris to read CRG's arrival out loud, since he says the favorite host has to be Chris, right?, you get one damn vote. I didn't see it, I didn't see it, oh well done mate. well done, excellent, thanks to everyone who submitted an answer to that question and to our previous guests who submitted their videos. I hope you enjoyed listening to them and now it's time for our question of the week for next week, which Dave will now ask. We'll be reading episode 101 next week, so thinking about Room 101, if you could go into Room 101 and pull out something that you think people would be in a rush to put in Room 101, what would you pull out?
Would it be an Amstrad gx4000? Which unpopular element would you rescue? Oh, I understand. I was really confused by that. It was like if you could go into Room 101 and take something else that was put in Room 101, what would you salvage from Room 101? So we are. No again, right, we're not going to put terrible things in Room 101, no, we're going to take out that thing that's out of fashion, yeah, sure, what would you take out that is widely considered an unpopular retro item? What would you rescue from Room 101? That is a good question. Yeah, in your opinion, which has an unfair reputation and I have a pretty bad retro reputation and why, why do you like it?
Okay, let's leave that out because I don't think we need to edit that thing that says yes, Duncan needs to say it. in the rating when you choose the subreddit, but that's the problem with it, make it work, thank goodness, Duncan's definitive test 100. As always, thank you all for listening for giving us your Saturday morning cartoon and, um, I hope you do. I've enjoyed the show and I'll see you next week before Room 101 of the remake of Room 101. See you then take care of a guest, bye, see you this week in retro was hosted by Neil from RMC, Chris Cave from 005. edema and Dave was produced by me The Duncan Styles podcast version of the show is available for your favorite podcaster, including Apple podcast and Spotify, and the video version is available on this week's Retro YouTube channel join our community subreddit on R This Week in Retro to suggest and vote for stories we cover on the show, if you watch This Week in Retro on YouTube please give us a like and subscribe to help us reach new viewers, if you enjoy our show and you would like to support it, check out the link to our Patreon page in the show notes or description.
