'Oh my God': Mothers shield children's eyes from horrific scene in Haiti

New this morning, a first look at how Americans evacuated from Haiti return to American soil. Nearly 160 people have left in the last week as gang violence increases. Now a gang leader was killed in a shootout with police last night, but the carnage continues. Now, seeing how David Culver was one of the first American television journalists to arrive in Port-au-Prince since he got in the car and began reporting on it is disturbing. Oh Lord. It's his body sitting right in the middle of the street. And people are trying to find the best way around it across the street.

, and strives to preserve the innocence that remains here in Haiti. The gruesome sight slows but does not stop the morning rush hour. And you can even see here, look at this. A police car passes right in front and will continue ahead. Does it even stop? A neighbor explains how an overnight gang attack ended in vigilante murders. This is a shootout here. This man says he and more than 50 others immediately set out to find those who were terrorizing his neighborhood. They surrounded a man they did not recognize.

And he thinks he was a gang member? We are referring to the gang that carries machetes. He tells me they committed an injustice. According to him, the only way they know is to defend themselves. Now, the invisible job market is when they come in, shooting everywhere, trying to scare us into running away. We won't just let them kill us. They have to die, he tells me. The way you look at this is kill or be killed. Oui, oui, oui, oui. The police do not tolerate the murders, but they are overwhelmed and overwhelmed and have no time to stop them.

There are daily shootings in the capital as police struggle to push back the gangs. The agents have willpower, but little else to solve. We see it firsthand while patrolling with the Haitian national police. There are no front lines in this war. The boundaries are blurred and constantly changing. I mean, this is just a symbol of the collapse of the state here. So this story. More than 1,500 of them have occupied this building and made it their own. Especially

, Thelma Louise. And there were those who stood in line for hours trying to get visas to go anywhere but here. Looting that very moment. And suddenly there is no security. There are no jobs. You know, there's usually no work if you run after us, wherever we are. Gangs are now heading to more prosperous areas. What's left of an ATM? He's still there. They are trying to portray themselves as Robinhood stuff.

But it's just these, it's just thieves. They are criminals. For street vendors like this woman who still have fruit to sell. There are no customers who buy them because people cannot afford most of these items. Well, the bad devil is more worrying for her. The horrors she witnesses in these streets. Many people have died, she tells me. And they have to make trips to pick them up. We see it for ourselves when we return just before curfew. The doctors who clean the remains of that alleged gang member are rushing not to save a life, but to collect two more bodies on this same street.
