The Blues, As Digested by a Classical Musician

Mar 21, 2024
Hello everyone, my name is Nari Sol and I am a composer pianist coming from the world of

classical

music. Recently I have been trying to explore a lot of different genres beyond what I am familiar with and this week I decided to focus on

blues

, especially the 12-bar progression that arises from the genre, so I've been introduced to the

blues

form on several occasions over the years, but I've never sat down and tried to apply it in any way. my umbrella, as always, here are some things I learned, if not reinforced, my knowledge on the following is the basic 12 bar blues progression, in the case of major blues, chords 1 and 4 are usually dominant 7th chords and, for minor blues, minor form.

Seventh Chords There are many altered blues forms that are derived from this basic model and variations of this progression exist as a standard form in many types of genres, including jazz rock, country pop, etc. Goodbye people, two of the most common blues scales are the minor blues scale. and the major blues scale, both of which are pentatonic scales with an added blue note. I also learned a lot from transcribing parts of one of Oscar Peterson's sea jam blues performances. This was really helpful for me to understand the subtle gestures in his performance that you can really understand.

More Interesting Facts About,

I don't get it just by looking at a written transcript, so it's been a couple of days since I started this transcript. I've been writing everything. I'm almost done and I'm working on the left hand, it's really hard for me to listen to it because I'm new to this language, but it's been fun and especially fun to try to hear all the places where Oscar Peterson actually has an accent and I've been marking them too. Something like this, let me see. If I looked at it normally I would just play it with these fingers and then since my fourth finger is here I would just use it, but because of the accent I find it much more practical to repeat the finger, so repeat the third finger it's much easier to do that separation and also the accent, so I feel a little strange walking into a shopping center with a keyboard but of course, in keeping with the tradition of these sound videos, I wrote a pocket piece, like this, like this, like this.

The chords I used were c7 for four measures f7 for two c7 for two and a flat major seventh to C minor chord over B flat and a c7 for two measures just for fun. I also tried to play a version with a bit more of a swing feel. so foreign so so foreign btw thank you so much to everyone who responded to my posts on both youtube and instagram about finding songs to add to my playlist don't feel like buying them.
