LAUNDRY ROOM MAKEOVER ON A BUDGET | LAUNDRY ROOM DECORATING IDEAS | MASSIVE TRANSFORMATIONS

Mar 25, 2024
Hello everyone and welcome to my channel. My name is Sonya and today I'll be joining you as you renovate this

laundry

room

that I did several years ago and as you can see, it really doesn't work like me. I don't want it anymore, the paint needs a little renovation. I want to add some backsplash so I thought this would be the perfect time to do it. It was raining outside by now all weekend, so I dedicated it to this

laundry

. I started by cleaning everything there was. I had removed everything and everything except the washing machines and the sink, I did not move them at this time just because the space is very small and it is very difficult to do, once everything was removed I proceeded to mud the walls, mud the holes around of the frame and the kitchen of the cabinets I wanted to mud these two extra holes I had in this door from when my husband was trying to figure out where to put the handles several years ago, so I did that.

I'm not going to paint the cabinets, but I really loved the color of the trim I chose, which is actually the color of the kitchen I'm installing this year, so I wanted all my trim to match that color. So I ended up buying a big gallon of this paint for that reason because I'm going to use it on all my downstairs trim so it didn't make sense to buy a different color paint for the bath

room

, the laundry room so I decided to paint. the cabinets too for the mudding, I just used the regular quick drying mudding compound and for the wood and the cabinets, I'm actually using some type of wood filler, uh, I guess a wood compound, I ended up not removing this and stick it with adhesive tape. around, but then you see, I'll change because I decided I wanted to paint that too, so I ended up painting and taping the wall around it instead of removing it, it probably would have been a lot quicker to just take it. instead of going and taping all these things around it, but I still taped the wall.

The reason I taped the wall even though I'm painting it is because I didn't want to. I find that sometimes spray paint can be a little sticky and I didn't want it to affect the paint on the wall so I added this paper just to protect it and I use only black spray paint to paint that because I want it like I said that I wanted to have it. in black and then I also made the handles. I made this for my bathroom two years ago, where I painted all my hardware and nothing had worn off.

They still look the same as before, so I thought I'd do it here. Also, for the paint, I took Benjamin Aura paint and I'm painting the trim in Benjamin Moore decorators white and it's a trim paint. I did it in semi-gloss and for the room I'm painting it in The Color of the Year, which is October Fog, and again I chose the aura paint. It is now their most expensive paint, but after doing so many different paint jobs throughout the house, I found it to be worth every penny. I only made one layer. this room and that's all I needed, it also has a primer and the coverage is phenomenal so that gallon of paint goes a long way because you don't need much to cover.

I loved Valspar paint, but I noticed when I was painting my basement with it that it wasn't going as smoothly as before and I wasn't as impressed. It used to be that my entire house was painted with wild spar paint until I repainted the basement and then painted. my daughter's room with benjamin moore or a painting and I think that's what it's called and then I decided it worked much better. I have to tell you that I am very impressed with myself for how well I cut these lines that I didn't have. To glue the roof or around any of the frames, I bought a 2 inch brush from Benjamin Moore and it worked great.
I didn't mess up the ceiling anywhere except when painting, except when I moved the chair, moved the brush, and was done. touching the ceiling with it and that was the only disaster I had, but as far as painting around all the cabinets and the corners and all that stuff, I didn't need roller tape, it's a Benjamin Moore roller, I think it's its internal foam roller and I like it, it works well so I let the paint dry for several hours before going around it and made sure I didn't miss any spots and wherever I missed a spot I just used a trim. brush to fill it in and that's all I had to do, it didn't require a second coat, so while I was waiting for the paint to dry, I went ahead and removed the countertop that you saw me remove at the beginning and cleaned it.
I cleaned it but left it wet a little. This shelf liner is easier to move around and I ended up covering it with this shelf liner I had purchased at Dollar Rama. I know this is not a permanent solution, but I really wanted a wood counter. I was hoping to find a table the same size as this one. This came from Ikea and I know they have a wooden look, but I couldn't find the same size anymore. Don't know. if they were out of stock and just didn't have it online or discontinued it and then ordering a new butcher block or laminate countertop that looks like this would take too much time and to be honest, it wasn't in the

budget

to spend that much since like I said renovating my entire main floor and I just didn't want to spend that kind of money so I know this is like putting lipstick on a pig, it's a temporary solution. but I think it turned out very well.
One of the biggest

transformations

I did in this room were these mosaics. Now comami.com reached out and offered to send me these beautiful mosaics. I chose the pattern I wanted. and they sent me enough to make this room, so I want to thank them for that and I'll link them below so you can check them out if you want to get them yourself. I have to tell you it was very easy they work with much better quality than the ones you would get at the dollar store. They have a mosaic texture on the outside. They are quite thick but not too thick.
They were easy to cut because I had a lot to cut. the cabinet and then also around the outlet and it also came with a really nice smoothing tool to work with and they fit together perfectly in the patterns so I did this around my washer and dryer and wrapped it around the sink and it probably took me a few two hours to do the whole project and it just took me two hours because I made a couple of mistakes cutting, just figuring out which side to cut and the top and the sides and all that.
I liked it more than the product itself, but like I said, it was very easy to work with, it worked very well. I wanted to put it on the other side and I played with it a little bit and then I didn't like the shape. It looked so I ended up removing it. I didn't catch this on camera, but I removed it and it took off some of the paint. I had to mute it as well, so it has a really good hold, just so you know, so make sure. before that you are sure of your cut and position before gluing it, that way you don't have to redo the painting or anything like that, so like I said there will be a link to the website at the bottom. description box and there are tons and tons of different designs to choose from, like it, I said they have tons and tons of different designs to choose from, so check it out.
I also want to mention that there will be a full video tutorial in my DIY video. DIY diy home diva youtube channel if you need more details on how to do this and I want to say this is the first video in my home renovation series that I am starting on this channel so this is the number one that I will have. the playlist linked in the description box and you can also check it out in the playlist section of my YouTube channel and this is where I will put all my home renovation videos and plans that I will share with you.
It's all finished and I love how it turned out. I think it added a lot to this room, a lot of character and I couldn't be happier with the result. Now it's time to put the room back together. I'm going to start by adding my handle, my handles to the doors and then I'll also re-attach my counter and just see how the counter, tile and paint look all together. I love the look of the counter as it looks, so I'm definitely going to be looking for an actual counter piece that is wood or laminated wood that will fit perfectly in this space.
I had to keep turning my dryer on continuously because birds got in. my vent and I don't want to burn them so I turned on the dryer just to blow them out and I had this problem last year and my husband put a little cage around the vent outside but since there's not much room for all that lint to go so all kind of bottle clogged the little cage so he had to open it and then he left it open and the birds came in but it was raining so he couldn't get out and take them out because it's on the second floor so, and he has a little of fear of heights and then you add the rain to it, so we were waiting for a sunny day for us both to go out and deal with it to see if we could. buy a larger cage to put around the vent so the fluff doesn't get stuck and maybe explode, so now i'm going to get to the most fun part of this

makeover

and that's the

decorating

. and organizing it, I had picked up these bottles at dollarama, they were three dollars each and I bought four because I have three different laundry detergents that I use and then I also have a fabric softener that I wanted to add to here and then I also picked up a couple of glass jars with lid and these will be for my oxiclean and my solar boosters and then the big one, this one was four dollars and I'm going to put some dryer balls in there and then I bought this one a while ago on etsy they are editable labels, they were very inexpensive.
I think I paid like five dollars for them because they were on sale and it saved me a lot of time versus designing them myself, which I totally can, but this was just easier and then all I have to do is edit what's going on there and The reason I bought this is because this is how I want to make my labels in my kitchen once I'm organizing it so I was lucky to have To use it in my laundry room I now had no sticker sheets which I highly recommend . To get a full size sticker sheet, all the sticker sheets you can print on so that way you don't have to modify.
Put them in like I was doing, but I didn't have any on hand. I didn't feel like going back to the store to buy some, so this was a quick fix. Now I can also adjust the size and whether I was redoing them. Again, I would definitely make them a little smaller just so they would go around these bottles better, they went around the glass ones much better, the glass ones, the smaller ones, uh, no wrinkles, but with these I had to fight with them a little bit just to smooth them out . I took them out now I wanted to put things in while they were drying the mod podge was drying the ones I wanted to clean my cupboards there were a few and this is mainly the reason I was putting them in, putting my detergents in these bottles because I buy the big ones for the fabric softener and the detergent and I don't like using them and how they end up dripping and all this stuff and the little containers get dirty unless you wash them every time so I think this is a better solution but I wanted to clean the cupboards because I'm going to put the other bottles still there, the leftovers that don't fit in the others and then I also want to organize all the things that were in these cabinets. so I picked up these were four dollars at Dollarama, I picked up two of those and then I also went ahead and picked up all the same white bins because I needed the other bins that were in here for some other organizational things that I'm doing in the basement so It worked well and that way I was able to make them all match and be the same color, so I'm going to put all my misting pads on the clear ones and then on the other one.
I'm going to go all my microfiber pad cleaning cloths as well as my Norwex dusting gloves, they'll go there but they were all being washed right now so I couldn't put them in there and then the other ones I used to put them all away . of my access vacuum accessories and then the other one had all the. I have several bags for washing bras and I also have bags to put the things you don't want banged around in your washing machine so they all fit. a bag, I also recommend having pillow bags, especially if you have felt pillows because you don't want that pillow to explode in your washer or dryer and the feathers get scattered everywhere.
It happened to me once and it's not fun, do it. So now that these guys have dried, I'm going to add the detergent to them. The first is my gym clothes detergent and this seems to be the only one that works for the smell. The one I was using, I couldn't. handle the smell of the tie the aroma that it had um I didn't like it my daughter didn't like it so I tried several different ones that you can get at grocery stores and none of them worked like this one. I bought this one at a running club, it was a little pricey but I don't wear it often and it lasts a while, I only use it strictly for gym clothes, the next one is unscented and colorless, this one is for all underwear and bras and things like that and then the normal detergent goes inthis well, actually, this is fabric softener first.
I had very little left in my big jar, so I bought one just so I could show him. I go to Costco, so I bought one for a dollar for a dollarama just so I can show you this before so I don't have to go buy a giant one at Costco, but that's the one I usually buy and I only use fabric softener. on the towels, that's it and then my usual tight detergent. I am currently using Tide. I was using Purcell, but we were already done with the smell, so I switched to Tide and prefer Priscilla in tight because I find it doesn't.
It doesn't fade my dark tones and then like I said, detergent overstock will increase here. I'm also going to add my stain removers here so that way they have a stain and I don't. I don't have to mess everything up every time I do the laundry, they'll just sit here until I have to refill the bottles, so for this jar I'm going to add my clothes dryer balls, now I bought these at Dollarama. I think $25 for two, which is a great deal, even if it was four dollars for both, it's a good deal. I remember when these first came out they were very expensive and I have two other sets they are in constantly. the dryer are not fabric but more like rubber so I'm excited to try using them to see if they are just as loud and then I had these spinning things I was using. on my refrigerator and I thought they would look great here just to put everything in there so all I have to do is turn it over and it takes up less space and then I wanted to cover up the outlet a little bit so I tried that. with my diffuser and a little plant that I picked up at dollarama and then over here I was going to put this laundry sign that I picked up at dollarama but it didn't work with the door and the door was hitting it a little so I decided to move it and completely cover the outlet over here and put it here and then for the little corner there, I'm going to put my little basket, well, it's not that small, but this is great for, you know, those lonely socks. and this wash and fold laundry sign I bought at a local store a couple of towns over.
I took a tour with a video where I talk about this store and I bought it knowing that I will be redoing my laundry room and it was perfect. I signed and it fit perfectly here so I was trying to make sure it was level because my level didn't fit in the middle and I didn't want to go find another level so I think I did pretty well. I'm sure my husband will come and tell me it's not level because he has a bad eye for that, but it looked level to me and that's really all that matters since I'm the one who does most of the laundry, so let me tell you.
Guys, I couldn't be happier with how this room turned out. There are few things left to do. I think I want to get a slightly larger rug for my floor and I need to figure out how to hang a curtain. Up here, since the window is right against the wall, so once I figure it out, I'll put a curtain on it, but other than that, it's perfect. I think the tiles elevated this room a lot and be sure to check them out. the link in the description box and all the little touches of green are just perfect, let me know what you think, let me know if you enjoyed this video.
