What made you become a doctor? I had diabetes when I was seven years old. I spent a week at the hospital in Seattle and it was a Children's Hospital and they made it so fun for me to be there that I really felt called since then to I wanted to make a career helping others and that took me until I was 30 to go I went to medical school because I was so frustrated with the medical system that I didn't think I wanted to be a part of it and then I found a holistic medical school so I'm trained as a holistic primary care doctor.

So I wanted to reach people all over the world, so that's when I decided to focus on type one diabetes because I lived with it for over thirty years. I really have knowledge that a lot of trained doctors just can't get because if you don't live with it day to day you're missing out on a lot of education, so I help patients from all over the world and sometimes I also take patients that don't have type one because I have a great passion for healthy living and helping people you know live healthier in terms of eating better, reducing stress, exercising more and taking better care of themselves. of themselves and I love being a counselor.
I love being a motivator. I do all that for my patient mm-hmm, that's good. I think that's why we're so in tune. You know, it's just that holistic approach to helping people do really practical things. changes in your lives that are so great, so tell me if you could sum it up what your philosophy is around diet and nutrition. I have a kind of slogan that I use a lot and it's called the four pillars of health and I talked about These are the four pillars that really lay the foundation for our well-being and you don't have them, it's like a four-legged chair, if there is something weakened in each of the legs, then we are unbalanced, that's why those four pillars. they're adequate, deep sleep healthy, healthy nutrition mental health and well-being that includes stress and spirituality and community and all that and then of course exercise, so every time I do an assessment on a patient I always ask them how those four areas are for you because they could come to see me with migraines or you know gastrointestinal problems, digestive problems or even you know skin problems and I will ask each patient if you sleep how your emotional health is what your exercise is and what you eat and my vision of a perfect world would include questions about those four areas and absolutely every medical visit because they are one.
Oh, your health and your lifestyle, you know, they all feed into each other, yes, absolutely, and it's a very holistic approach. It's going to make a difference. You know you could be trying to help with someone's nutritional advice, but if they don't get enough sleep or if they have stress and can't handle it, everything is going to expire. You can say it? Tell us a little bit more about the key self that you shared in your TED talk and what was your key message that you really wanted to convey, yeah, yeah, and actually my TED talk is right on the home page of my website, so, very easily, go to dr.
Jodi and D and it's there so it bothers me daily how I see

sugar

as something so accepted that it takes up so much space in the supermarket that they give it to children in schools, my parents who I work with because children with type one They'll be mad because their kids can't eat like other kids, which means all the other kids eat sugar every day and we call it a gift like, oh this is such a special gift, well no it's not, It's killing. It's causing us heart disease, it's called cancer, depression, fatigue, obesity, type 2 diabetes, if we take all the deaths from those afflictions combined, that's more deaths than car accidents, and we need to wake up and we need to see parents feeding their young children with their The brain barely knows it yet and they are feeding their children sugar that affects sugar.
It does brain damage. It hurts children. If you eat it regularly, your brain won't function fully and we use it like we give it as a gift and we give it as love on Valentine's Day and Christmas everyone gets cookies and they feel very obligated and it's like this monster of negativity that everyone has just accepted as something positive, it is simply distorted thinking that is killing us. mm-hmm and do you feel like it's so acceptable and so common that we're just not aware of what they're doing or you know I feel like sometimes there are a lot of people who are maybe walking around a little bit frustrated? or a little lethargic we just aren't the best even though they may feel relatively healthy but maybe they are just missing out on the opportunity to be the best they can be.
I'm in optimal health and sometimes it just relieves us when we're maybe you don't even know it yeah so you started a great post. I get a lot of emails from people who watched the TED talk and made simple changes and write to me to let me know how much I want to say, how amazing they feel, you know? They didn't know how bad they felt, yes, and I guess the masses aren't aware of it, but having type 1 diabetes, I've been very aware of literally every single thing. I have never consciously eaten a single bite of sugar in my entire life.
You know, I've never had the gift, maybe or maybe not, of just putting sugar in my mouth and not paying attention. I wrote down every piece of sugar I ate as a child for 10 years. I had to do it. write down every time I had sugar and you know you can't eat sugar without thinking if you have type 1 diabetes so when you say well don't you think the masses aren't aware of it yeah they aren't and sometimes I'm really envious of that, I mean, obviously not, but I think I can't even relate, I can't even relate, yeah, so we need to talk about it, do you know what the steps are?
Because I imagine people are watching. This, moms who are watching this, you know when you talk about the effect of sugar on children's brains and on our lives, what are some of those practical and simple strategies that you recommend that they know how to give people? Yes, I love giving internships. strategies at the end of the TED talks I give I say three there are three things you can do today the first is always start the day not with sugar not with cereal not even with muffins not with pancakes or waffles or a bagel, toast, oatmeal or granola , anything like that, is starting your day with something protein-based, which does your blood sugar in the morning can really set your energy level for the day, so grab a handful of nuts, have some celery and peanuts. apple butter and peanut butter scrambled eggs scrambled tofu with a protein shake that you can make with a really healthy powder, hopefully, or you can even make a protein shake with your own soaked almonds and hemp seeds and things like I have an amazing recipe on my blog for a flax muffin where you can just make it in just a minute it's flax seeds, ground flax and an egg and vanilla and you can put it in the toaster oven for 10 minutes, I put everything in a cup of coffee and bake it or are you someone who uses a microwave that takes a minute to prepare in the microwave.
My personal favorite is chia pudding which is also on my blog so I really find some healthy sources of fiber and protein you know. Start your day so that you start your day with balanced energy, not only are you avoiding a blood sugar spike, which then means a blood sugar crash, and what that means is your energy levels go like this and their moods go like this, their hunger levels go like this. This gives you constant energy and protein also takes a long time to digest, it is a very slow digesting fuel, which is why many people say they start craving things at 11 a.m. m.
Or they're hungry at lunchtime, you know? When you eat a high sugar, high carbohydrate meal, you know that your blood sugar rises and then drops and this drop feels like fatigue, hunger, you know all that, so everything is more balanced, your state of mind. mood, your appetite, your energy level when you start your day with something that's slow-burning fuel, like protein and fiber, mm-hmm, yeah, grant and Helen doesn't have stable blood sugar levels. I mean, vets are obviously key for type one diabetes, but it's also really applicable to everyone, right? and to help prevent. I'm developing type 2, which is a lot, yeah, it's interesting.
I carry my blood test kit with me, of course, wherever I go, so I'm always pulling out my stuff and saying, hey, I want to test your blood sugar and I gave a blood sugar test to one girlfriend and she was 85 before she ate in Australia, New Zealand and Europe members 85 would be like 4.5 there are different things you know yeah yeah I think that's right 85 something I bought and then she ate sushi and she ate this seaweed salad and seaweed salad always has tons of sugar and sushi is all rice and her blood sugar doubled, so it went up to 165, which is completely out of range because the blood sugar level Healthy blood sugar is about 80 to 120 and so on. here's a non-diabetic that goes up to 165 and you know there's so much sugar even in a healthy food that you perceive this healthy food as sushi or a seaweed salad, but I find that Asian foods have tons of hidden sugars and much of their Meals are based on rice and although I like the taste of Asian food, you know, I never like to go to those types of restaurants because it's very difficult for me to eat it, you can't even get it as a grilled protein, like it normally is. sautéed in sauce or breaded in sauce or something like that hmm and I don't know if you know dr.
Jody, but I had gestational diabetes in my third pregnancy, so it's okay, which was devastating at the time I was first diagnosed, but it's actually given me this amazing information because it was like a 10-week insight into the labels several times a day becoming a human pincushion. I liked it, you know you've been your whole life, I was really interested and understood those little differences between what I had thought was healthy and what an impactor could still have when my blood sugar levels weren't as conscious, so I think it's just if we can increase the understanding and awareness of what sugars do in our bodies and how we can just enjoy simple systems.
You have created very simple and effective ways to add more protein and fiber and give us that stable blood. The sugar level that will make a big difference not only matters and the mood today, but also in our home in the long term. Yeah, yeah, that's a big thing that I mention in the TED talk is how it's really hidden in foods that we don't think about. We know that any flavored yogurt, like blueberry yogurt or strawberry yogurt, has a ton of sugar because we know it's not just plain yogurt and fresh fruit. You know, it's basically a fruit flavored sugar syrup that they put in it and then I talked about how to make muffins.
They are just glorified cakes, muffins are like a cake without frosting and a lady told meemailed me and said, "You know, I was having a muffin for breakfast every morning and it suddenly hit me and she was like, I stopped eating a muffin about a month ago and now." I've lost six pounds, that's like yeah, it's always amazing how small changes make such a big difference. Tell me how you actually help your patients adopt these healthy habits. What are your strategies? It's a really great question. I have a whole acronym: The acronym be awesome is the rhythm, it's like dr.
Jodi's formula is amazing and the letter B stands for baby steps, so you know, just have protein for breakfast, that's my best bet. I have two others that I list in micharla of encouragement you have to find what small babies that work for you many people will postpone the change because they feel like they know it's such a big thing and they like, well, how about tomorrow we have eggs for breakfast instead of a muffin, that's all? so small steps mean expecting less from yourself a lot of people think okay, I'll never eat sugar again. I'm like, well, I'm not saying that, I mean, I even admit in my TED talk that I love cookies, so I don't do it.
I don't want to keep people away from extremes and therefore expect less of themselves. The letter A means responsibility. When you want to make a change, the ideal is to work with someone to whom you are accountable. Ideally, someone you pay because I don't. I know how many times I've written off family or friends, but that's very common, so when you put money into something, you're more likely to step up because you want to get your value and then it just goes down from there, but yeah, I have a complete formula for when I work with patients, like I said, I work with patients all over the world and I love being a motivator and a life coach for patients, but in a complete formula for how I help patients and it's the rest, the other leaders, they're on your website if people want to know what the other leaders stand for and I don't know, I was just throwing a tantrum writing them so it's always good to start with baby steps, baby steps waiting. yourself and have someone responsible, I think even if people start with that, yeah, and it makes a big difference, doesn't it?
Yeah, that's the step-by-step version of my formula, yeah, so to conclude, if you know people are watching that, maybe start to raise awareness about this, what would you say to someone who's thinking? Hey, I want to make sure I avoid getting type 2 diabetes. What would you say? Is there anything else you would give as key advice? Well, yes, but first me too. I want to take two minutes to explain that type one I have is an autoimmune condition. For some strange reason, my immune system decided to attack and kill the cells that produce insulin. I couldn't have changed my lifestyle much to avoid that, I mean, there are theories today that maybe my vitamin D was too low or maybe I should have been breastfed longer or maybe I shouldn't have been breastfed. or you know there are all these theories out there maybe I shouldn't drink cow's milk that young, but I don't really know, although it's a very small percentage, less than 10, maybe even less than five percent of people with diabetes have type 1 and at this point no one has figured out a way to get our insulin production back, you know, it doesn't matter. how holistic and holistic my lifestyle is.
I have a video still growing mine back, but I believe in visualization so I'm working on that, but anyway, type 2 is more, there's definitely genetics, definitely, but then it's had a lot of style of life, right? your system is really exhausted your system is tired of producing insulin because every time you eat anything that has sugar in it, whether it's jelly beans or a banana, your body has to produce insulin and produce insulin because insulin is the pickup truck for the sugar that you eat sugar. Sugar enters the blood and then how well do you need insulin to pick up the sugar from the blood and feed it to the cells?
So if you don't have insulin your blood sugar levels rise which is very harmful it's like shards of glass like breaking the inside of your arteries if you want it causes blindness heart disease kidney failure strokes you don't want too much sugar in your bloodstream but if you continue to overeat and then you don't burn it off either then you become sedentary and You become obese and constantly eat all these carbohydrate rich foods, the system inevitably wears out, blood sugar starts to rise because insulin can't keep up and, frankly, the cells are also tired of eating the sugar and the cells closed their doors. and that's called insulin resistance, the cells are like I don't see the sugars there and I see the insulin is there but I don't even want to take it so you can reverse that assuming you're not late Late Late Late stage where most don't It is basically removing stress from the system.
Lose weight. Start burning more calories by exercising. Eat a healthier diet. Stop putting too much stress on the system. I don't even like to say that type 2 is a disease because it sounds like it. so taking away my power, oh, I have diabetes, like getting stung by a bee, you know, like it's final and again, obviously, so many cases of people who have technically had diabetes and changed their lifestyle, simple things. again, starting to walk, sewing, running errands. They take the stairs at work by making simple changes to their food and increasing their protein and reducing sugars and they don't have diabetes anymore so I guess it's not inevitable for them at all, yes yes it is.
I mean, think of diabetes as obesity, if you will, it's obesity. your disease, I mean, there's a lot of talk that there are definitely metabolic and hormonal issues, but in many cases, if you live a healthier lifestyle, your blood sugar will normalize, so I think diabetes is more a symptom rather than a disease. in most cases, not at all, but in most cases it is a symptom of an unhealthy lifestyle, so it is reversible in most cases mm-hmm, so it's about giving you hope to the people, isn't it? Yeah that's good, is there anything else you found or maybe? customer success stories that you would share with us, but you could share them with us.
I feel like every patient I work with is a success story. I love my patients very much and know that anyone who will listen to me can work with you. I can work with all patients. All over the world and I know patients, if they have diabetes, almost all the patients I work with have lower blood sugar levels, which is healthier for their body. I have had patients who, of course, lose weight and patients who simply feel healthier. I was just talking. this morning about the type 1 diabetes patient and no one ever told her to eat less carbs.
I know it sounds so obvious now, but really those of us with type 1 diabetes are told that we can eat whatever we want and we just take more insulin to cover it. so guys are out there eating whatever they want, taking more insulin, but their blood sugar ends up like that and they don't feel good, and even I ate a lot of carbs, you know, I remember having bagels for lunch and frozen yogurt for I had lunch when I was 20 and anyway my patient now is like I've been dead B for 40 years and she was just okay with society, you know, bread, pasta and rice, and she really didn't , we never stop. and she thinks maybe I shouldn't do what everyone else is doing and I'll feel better and she's just been working with me for over a year now we have a half hour call once a month because she says I never want to stop . talking to you you have changed my life his blood sugar levels are better than ever his energy levels are better than ever he feels better than ever the bleeding in his eye that was caused by high blood sugar levels is going away and she's like everything I What I did was eat less carbs because I just didn't think about it.
I just didn't think something so simple could change my life. Yes, it's incredible, what a beautiful story. Know?
