Mechanic Reviews a Tesla Model Y. The TRUTH About Tesla.

Apr 06, 2024
Hello and welcome to the Car Care Out review channel and welcome to a Tesla

model

and a video that I have wanted to make since day one of this channel. In today's video we are going to do a proper technical review of the Tesla we are in. Let's look at the interior and exterior some things that are good some things that are not good in a way that you don't normally see in typical car

reviews

without further ado let's start our technical review under the hood oh um just give me a moment , that's much better now I can understand what well, let's talk about Tesla's powertrain and something about electric cars that you need to know about every electric car is basically a simple recipe: giant battery electric motor that you send power to. electric motor the car moves you cut the power it stops that is basically the recipe for every electric car there is really nothing cutting edge in that car it is very big you don't have an engine you don't have a transmission you have all kinds of space for a giant battery, but this is where the magic of Tesla is and really any electric car and this is how electric cars should be measured, the thermal management system and this is where Tesla takes the competition, shakes their hand and says welcome to the decade of 1920, that's where the technology compares to this here's where this really shines let's talk about thermal management for a moment why it's important Lithium ion batteries are very difficult to manage they don't like cold weather they don't like the weather warm they want to be exactly where they want to be, so in the case of cars, if you're in a cold climate the battery is too cold, if you're in a warm climate the battery is too hot and then when you charge it it heats up when you let it sit for too long, it's too cold and the tricky part is how to manage the battery temperature ideally and without becoming counterproductive, people will say, well I'm sure at some point we'll put heaters on a giant cooling system to make this work. system, it will become counterproductive when your range drops and here is the other problem with electric cars HVAC CNN gasoline engine has a heat generator the engine I don't care how cold it is outside the moment you start the engine it generates heat In electric cars there is no heat generator, so how do you heat the battery and how do you heat the people inside the car?

That's the biggest challenge and this is also where Tesla takes things to the next level, especially in the older

model

s. They also had cutting edge technology but this is the latest and possibly the craziest system you will ever see in an electric car and in order for us to understand Tesla's magnificent thermal management system we have to go back to the basics which has nothing to do with . With cars, a topic that is fascinating to me, it can be boring to many, but bear with me, we are going to keep this extremely simple so that everything makes sense. thermodynamics.

More Interesting Facts About,

mechanic reviews a tesla model y the truth about tesla...

I'm not a scientist. I'm not a physics expert, but I'll do it. I share with you my humble education here thermodynamics to a certain extent there is no cold per se there is heat and there is less heat keep that in mind for a moment so if I take an apple that is frozen at zero degrees and I put another apple next to it At negative 30 degrees there is a tendency for the apple that is at 0 degrees to transfer heat to the one that is at negative 30 degrees. simply because the negative 30 apple is colder or has less heat, so even though they are both frozen and super cold, the one that is colder will want to transfer heat from the one at a higher temperature, so basically regardless of where Whatever its temperature, any object with a lower temperature will want to transfer heat from the object. that's at a higher temperature, that's the basic gist of how this magnificent system really takes things to the next level, let's dig deeper and things will start to make sense, let's start with the most important type of thing in your regular gasoline car or even in a hybrid for example you have two HVAC modes per se you have cooling when it's hot outside you need to cool the cabin you have heating when the cabin is too cold and you need to heat it up in the Tesla there are 15 modes yes 15 modes heating and cooling because the entire cooling system is not just there to heat the cabin, it actually serves the engines and the battery, and it's all integrated in a way that only a genius could figure out how to do it and make it work properly. that way.
mechanic reviews a tesla model y the truth about tesla
To do all this you have a lot to do all these systems are integrated with each other there is a cooling system for the battery there is a cooling system for the propulsion motors in the case of this Tesla model and there is a dual motor all-wheel drive there are two engines and then you have the inverters for these engines that also need cooling and then you have the cabin that also needs cooling and heating, so that's how they did it in a cool way, they invented something they called a super collector, you can see it proudly right here , this super manifold has a valve inside that has never been heard of in the automotive industry because it just defies what's complicated, but it's actually pretty simple component-wise, it's just a bunch of hoses and a valve. which is brilliantly designed, so this valve is called octave valve, it is an eight way valve.
mechanic reviews a tesla model y the truth about tesla
I mean, this is something unheard of in the automotive industry, you either have a three-way valve or a four-way valve for coolant, this is an eight-way valve. way valve and not only does it have refrigerant but it also has refrigerant passing through it as well as a seed refrigerant and that's where the magic is how they made this work and that's how they were able to squeeze out every last drop of heat going back to that thermodynamics. principle, so let's say this car is at 32 degrees Fahrenheit to zero Celsius, that's how life will start: we need to warm up the cabin and the battery is too cold, so we also need to warm it up a little bit, that's how this goes. to boot the coolant will flow into a cooler and this is a crazy bar wait a second that colon is at 32 degrees well the cooler will cool that coolant below ambient temperature that's cold and then we'll go to the radiator, which then due to the laws of thermodynamics they will absorb heat from the ambient temperature because now the refrigerant is colder than the ambient temperature so it will absorb some heat and then that refrigerant which absorbs some of the heat will heat the refrigerant again, for what that refrigerant would be a little bit A little bit higher temperature goes into the compressor, which by the way is an electric compressor that compresses that refrigerant and sends it to a condenser inside the car, where now this refrigerant is at high temperature, high pressure and that's how the cabin hits, that's pretty crazy. how you're stretching the laws of thermodynamics to do that, you're basically creating heat from 0 to 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit, that's a pretty cool concept and basically, of course, we don't talk about this, this has heat pump. system, so the air conditioning system is very simple, the same with any other car, so basically the air conditioning works the same way with thermodynamics: it takes heat from the cabin to the refrigerant and that refrigerant circulates and makes a lot heat, now loses its heat in the condenser. and then it goes back and that's how the cycle basically works, but here in the heat pump system, when we're heating, you have the heat absorbing part outside and the heat losing part inside.
Something very simple, you know, there's a heat pump inside. Toyota RAV4 Prime cars for example use a Prius Prime, nothing really crazy about homes they use it but the way they do it here is amazing, they cool the recruit below low ambient temperature and charge it with heat and then used. to heat the refrigerant which will then run the heat pump system, which is pretty crazy, but wait, it doesn't even end there because we have that eight-way valve that can actually circulate the refrigerant in the refrigerator wherever it wants, this is what you do when you start driving because remember we're trying to squeeze out as much heat as possible to warm up the cabin and warm up the battery especially on a cold day when you're just starting to drive so what you're going to do when you start driving drive so that you have the The electric motors generate some heat because you have friction, you have all kinds of things to drive the axles and do that, they are going to start to get a little hot and then the inverter that drives these motors also generates heat, so They're actually going to turn the Octo valve in a way where the coolant will now go to the drive unit, whether it's the front drive unit, the rear drive unit, whatever the case may be, it's going to absorb some heat. of them and will squeeze out a little heat. them and bring it back to heat the coolant that can now heat the battery cooling system to heat the battery and the cabin, that sounds extremely complicated, but the reality is that it is not the design or the engineering that was behind it.
It's amazing how they thought of every little thing because the execution is actually very simple once you invented that valve, it's just a matter of a bunch of hoses running everywhere and this brilliant valve that can change the flow of refrigerant in an instant. of a second without having 10 20 30 different valves that change everything, it's brilliant how it works and how fast it works, and then things are extremely complicated design-wise. I mean, there are times when this car drives both the air conditioning and heating inside the cabin. because it adds heat to the cabin, but then you need just a little bit of heat to keep the coolant at the temperature you like, so it will heat up the cabin but then cool it down a little bit, basically it takes some of that.
Heat the excess and use it to heat a coolant to warm the battery, whatever the case is needed at the time. I mean, the level of engineering here is beyond anything you see in the automotive industry, but then there's like super mode where this is where they thought of every little thing here, let's say the temperature is extremely cold, you can drive these cars in very cold weather and that's the cool part, let's say things are extremely cold, they're actually going to spin. on two electric heaters, which becomes counterproductive because these electric heaters consume a lot of power and your range will be affected, but at least you have something to keep you going.
You will turn on these electric heaters which will generate heat which will be used to heat the cabin and heat the coolant and heat the coolant so that it has dual use so when you are wasting battery power for these electric heaters you can use them both ways , not just once. This is the beauty of it and through that octave valve in this whole system that is so cleverly designed, that's how the 15 modes of heating and cooling cycles come about. Because you have this octavalve, you can capture all the heat possible in an instant. of this whole brilliantly designed system to heat the cabin and heat and cool the battery in a way that is possibly the most efficient ever seen in the automotive industry.
Now we've talked about this system having 15 modes, the only way you can do it. it's with the Octo valve and I also told you that this system is complicated by the design, everything was thought out, but in the components, a real design, once you look at the car, it's actually not that complicated because what makes it brilliant it's the design and the software that drives it and how you look at everything, so let's talk about the actual components of this thermal management system because this is where there's nothing special about the lithium ion battery, it's just a lithium ion battery. lithium, nothing really special about the motor that powers it. just a motor that drives the inverter supplies it with power and that's it, so the first component, which is possibly the biggest problem, was not always the case with Tesla, this is something in their latest systems where the super manifold or Octo valve. in front of you says super collector with great pride.
I would be very proud and write the name on it too if I invented this, so the first point of the refrigerant in temperature exchange will be your liquid cooled condenser, so this one has no condenser, this one has a liquid carbon condenser, but actually it is also used for other purposes, in addition to that, in addition to that, we have the second refrigerant and refrigerant exchange point, which will be the chiller which is separate from the liquid cooled condenser, which can Let's say it is the same but it has a characteristic opposite, then there are two more radiators inside the car, one of them is a condenser that is used to heat the cabin, one of them is an evaporator that is used to cool the cabin and then you have a big radiator. that is very inclined is not because this carIt doesn't really have a grill in the front and also has an electric compressor.
This is nothing special either, many hybrids, many cars actually have an electric compressor and better yet your refrigerator in your house has an electric compressor so it's nothing special there and you have a labyrinth of refrigerant pipes, lines of AC that go everywhere, that's basically it, you have coolant lines that go to the battery because the battery is liquid cooled, the coolant will cool and heat that battery and then you have lines that go to the rear drive unit, the front drive unit, you have a couple of water pumps, electric water pumps and that's it and it's a relatively simple system, yes there are a lot of hoses and a lot of complications, but I don't see it by looking at the car because What's complicated is that inside of the components and the way it is managed, and this is where Tesla is.
I mean, this is a mega complicated system, but when you look at it in the car, it's not that complicated, it's the way it's brilliantly designed. and if there is something that Tesla does much better than anyone else in the electric market it is this and this is what makes Tesla special in my opinion, let's talk about the exterior of the Tesla Model and or actually all Teslas because all models And it's a tall Model 3 and the whole Model 3 is a small bottle and the whole Model I've done. I've seen a more bland looking car and I understand that some people love them for their technology, it's not just about looks.
I mean you could have made them a little better first, there is no grill on the front even though it has a radiator, people say oh. Electric cars don't have an engine, they don't have a radiator, in fact they do and it's very important, but instead of putting it like normal cars where the radiators in the front have a grill and life is great, we don't have. this closed section which, by the way, every time you run and launch a car wash, this section doesn't get cleaned because it's such a weird angle that normal car washes don't touch and then you have the bottom section that's open and that It's where the air actually rises to the radiator, I don't know why they all look the same, but beyond that the build quality and fit and finish on the outside is, shall we say, horrendous.
I mean, spaces are everywhere. bit, when you start looking at the smaller details, it almost seems like Tesla spent their entire budget on their brilliant thermal management system and the way the electric car works and they were like man, let's stick a body on it and throw it away and do this this It's a very poorly assembled body if you like Teslas I'm sorry, this is the

truth

, I have to tell the

truth

, there are gaps everywhere, things that are very cheap and flimsy, but not very well put together, all plastics. They are naturally well made and for me this is where things fall apart because I don't like how these things look, they didn't actually have to look like a spaceship, the only thing to say is that some of these strange shapes and the weird looks are all about aerodynamics so you don't have a block in the road and you expect it to become efficient but still all the cars are trying to do that too to increase their efficiency by making a turn faster.
The body, so it's aerodynamic, but this one doesn't look good, it's just my car guy opinion and one of the most annoying things about the exterior of this car is the appearance of the door handle. I understand the design of this. It makes sense that you wouldn't do it. I don't want the handles to stick out for aerodynamics, that's perfectly fine, but here's the problem: you have to push this and then the door opens and then this thing sticks out and this is what most people will want to do: you push this and then you want to take it out. here and then all this goes down this is a button many people think that the model S that has the handle that comes out and the pulls would press the button I don't know that's all this is manual this is not a manual door this is an electronic actuator, just open the door, this is basically a glorified button to open this door, just make it a button and add a little handle next to it, we don't have to deal with this deal.
I don't like this handle for everyday use maybe it works on a supercar which it doesn't. Let's talk about the interior of the Tesla Model Y and this is where things fall even further, with the exception of the screen which we'll get to in For a moment, there's really not much to say about this interior because it has nothing, there's no single button in this interior, except for a few, very, very few, there are two rotary dials on the steering wheel and then there is the emergency light right here. two map lights and that's it shifter turn signal thank you very much for that, but otherwise there is nothing in this interior.
I mean, this makes the cheapest and most horrendous Eco box look like a special interior because there is nothing in this interior and the worst. part of it is the way it's put together and rather glued back together, we go back to the same thing as the exterior, the materials here are not good and some people will say, oh, but this leather is a special leather, but the rest of the interior For Someone who works on cars, this is extremely natural and this is the problem with these cars, they wanted to be special, they wanted to be different and in the process of doing it things are not right here, I mean this is a very expensive car. and the interior is not good, that's the conclusion, everything is cheap, it feels really unput together, there are gaps everywhere.
I mean, it feels like this was literally glued together with the cheapest possible glue and the most horrendous materials. Not really. I like this interior, with the exception of one thing, the scream, this is another place where this goes to the next level and is very well done, folks, there are some things about this car that are good, some things that are not good. Of the good things, this is a huge 15-inch screen. There are laptops with smaller screens than this one and at first when you look at it you say, "This is really nice, but when you start using it more and more you realize how well made it is." This is, I mean, the software is super cool, the screen is so good, I love it and let's talk about it, so basically at any point you can hide this, you have this giant navigation and it shows you the car, you can close the doors. unlock them and then you can open the front or the trunk just by clicking on the screen, but wait any longer, press this little car icon, all your controls are here, even your glove box is here, right here, glove box window lock, child lock that can fold. the mirrors turn on the wipers change the steering angle whatever you need to do it's all here there is no physical button on this car you want your climate control just press here the climate control is on and now you can control what you want change the air direction, you can do that, I mean, it has to be said, it's well done and this screen is very responsive.
The autopilot settings, the block settings, and then the customizations are beyond what you'll see in any car. The attention is incredible. with details on the screen, I mean, you can very easily change as many options as you want, pedals and steering, you want Comfort Mode, sport mode, acceleration, you want cool or Sport and then we go to lights, you want the front fog lights. On or off, do you want your headlights to be on? Auto on, park off. I can see where it works to consolidate everything here and then we go to things like the glove box.
Hey, we have a PIN number for the glove box, so you don't have the valet key and all that mess and speaking of the key, there's actually no key in this car, this is just a little thing that looks like a credit card, that's the key and if you use this you need to update because all you need is your smartphone basically you open the car door it's already unlocked and it's running just press the brake pedal and it's on so now the car is on and working all your lights are here warning lights what gear you're in Drive in reverse whatever the case may be and you push it, it feels like something from Mercedes-Benz, but the other thing is we don't have an on-off switch.
Basically, you open the door, walk away and it just goes off and on and that's it, folks, this interior is. the kind of interior that makes the cheapest Mitsubishi Mirage feel like a luxury car, except for this screen, this screen is very well made, it has to be said, let's talk about the back seat of the Tesla bottle, why am I 5 '7, this is how I drive. position I have a decent new space, very good headroom, but you have the hump because here you have the whole glass roof, but the thing is that this cheap thing is everywhere, I mean, this plastic in front of me in the seat not all manufacturers will do this completely. wrap the seat in leather to save some cost and that's fine, but this is this, you know, this plastic reminds me of GM in the 90's, this plastic looks like you're going to break it just by looking at it, that's how cheap they feel the things here. and again, there is absolutely nothing, there is a vent that you can move by hand, which is very luxurious in the back, but otherwise, you can't expect anything more in the back seat than cheap plastic and nothing that fits or place. together a well here so the back space is pretty decent it actually stores in the back quite large you have two buttons here that put the rear seats in now they don't put them back up at this price that would be nice but oh well , you have a lot of space here and this is, I guess, some of the redeeming features of the rest of the car, of course, this has no spare tire and you have a giant, really super deep storage area, right here and I guess it's great in the practical sense.
This is a decent sized car, but let's hope it lasts because it's very cheap to put together and the materials here just aren't good. Let's talk about some things I don't like about this one and in fact every Tesla see I love the technology in this car. This thermal management system and this electric drive and the way everything is set up and designed and that screen are the most important things in this car. I mean, this is where all the budget went mainly to the way it drives, the driving system and then that screen. how well thought out it is, but then we have to inherit the car itself.
I don't like his appearance. I don't like the way the interior feels, not only do you know the materials and the design, and the way it's put together, but it's glued together. together for lack of a better word that's the best way to describe it the part where I don't like the way it looks that's a matter of taste it's okay but I don't like the way it's put together it's not really well done, I feel like they spent the whole budget on the design and decided, oh we have this brilliant design, now we can put whatever bodywork we want on it, but that's when things fall apart, it's not a good car, it rattles, it squeaks, it's very hard on potholes.
It's not really refined in any way and you're really buying this for the thermal management system. This glossy design and screen is very nice, but you are compromising a lot and these things are not cheap, yes, you can surely buy them. a model 3 for 35,000 uh yeah, that's not the case, sorry Mr. Elon Musk, that's the truth. I don't like the car. I wish they would scrap it all, sell their technology license to other companies that make real bodies and interiors and everything, this would be the only car, then we will really move into the era of electric cars because this electric car system is possibly the best, but at this price and the rest of the car it just doesn't make any sense and wait this car is extremely fast and I mean it will slap you in the seat and drive you in a way that you almost feel like your heart is sinking it comes out of your body and then it comes back, but then if you keep doing that, your range increases a lot. quickly and then there comes a point, if you drive in a warmer climate, where the software will just limit that because you overheated things.
Beyond what this brilliant system can handle, so no one really buys this because it's extremely fast because it goes against. The point of electric cars, so you're going to be constantly charging them, why I don't understand it, so what's the final verdict on the Tesla Model and or actually all Teslas because they're basically small, medium and large ? anyway, this is the company that put the electric car on the map, they made it possible with their technology, their design, the way they made the system work and they in that department are the best, they are the best and this has to be like that. he said, but my big problems with Tesla are the rest of the car.
People generally buy Teslas. They're fascinated by the system and how it drives and the screen and how nice it is. They take a look at the rest of the car.Sorry here's a message from the rest of the world because Tesla owners or more like the community, the mainstream communities are actually a minority in the automotive world, the rest of the automobile is horrendous, it has to be said, just It's not a nice place to be and spending that kind of money on a not nice place to be will get old quickly. I have driven this car for a week after the first few days it started to wear out.
There's nothing in this interior other than that screen and that. Sorry, call me old fashioned, it's just that there are no amenities, there is nothing and the way it sounds and everything feels cheap and fails and just isn't well thought out or put together really starts to wear out quickly and this is where I wish Tesla would do it. did. Stop your arrogant ways and your stubborn ways of oh, this is how we make you take it or leave it. Think of the masses. This is a brilliant system. It could actually be an everyday driving car, except for the rest of the car and today.
At these prices, for what these things are good for, there are many companies that are starting to catch up with their electric technology and soon this will be a thing of the past. Thanks for popularizing the electric car, but we could figure it out. the rest of the car better and here we go friends, before you run out to buy a Tesla, you should draw and look at the rest of the car because it is not nice, that's the truth, friends, I hope. This video is useful informational.
