I was waiting for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. If they dragged him back, he'll get all the fenders on that car.

Tyler Reddick, another rookie. In fact, he ran the Daytona 500 a year ago and finished 13th in the Daytona 500 a year ago. How Larson looks on the outside of him, it's hard to believe he'll still lead a lap or finish in the top five in the Daytona showdown. Kurt Busch, the winner of the duel in 2011. and Michael McDowell finished in the top ten in his last two 500 David Ragan in a single Drive Two-time Super Speedway winner in NASCAR Ross Chastain top 10 in last year's 500 ty Dillon finished top 10 in his last 3 Daytona starts Brendan Gaughan who stuck in what he says is his last Daytona 500 at age 44 in time Timmy Hill will try to make his way along with Corey Lajoie JJ Yeley has to race that es his only shot at the 500 was Brennan Poole in his first Cup start and BJ McLeod finished 21st last year in his only previous race.

He talked to Erik Jones last night at a feature and he's still laughing about it and they took a photo of the team in victory lane comparing his victory lane to Terry Labonte's at Bristol. 1995 now you expect that kind of, I mean, if Bristol is a meat grinder, you expect that kind of carnage in Bristol, certainly not the kind that can bring that car home in victory lane at Daytona, but let's call Erik Jones, Jeff Gordon, in the Fox Sports Booth, you got me, hey Eric, this is Jeff, in the Fox Sports Booth, you got me, buddy, well it could be the same radio from the classes, let's try them on the second one radio we have.

I think it sounds like him, hey Eric, this is it. Fox Sports swag Jeff caught me, there you are, hey man, what a wild crash on Sunday. Great job, win in that race, but you came home with a totaled race car, you can't afford to do that with this car, this is your Daytona 500 car. So now you know how much risk you're willing to take in this race to try to get home first, let me get up there and I can win it. Well, that first duel is wild but very fun to watch. We can't wait to see you duel, good luck, thank you, just as we have a different group of drivers on the track, we have a different team on pit road, yours, Matt Yocum, well, Mike Brendan Gaughan is on time for the great American race. but tonight he will be both the creator and breaker of dreams for Timmy Hill in JJ Yeley.
Now, if he runs away, he will make it on time, but if he falls behind, he will be the highest finisher between Hill and Yale. the great American race would be the seventh star in the 500 for yaeli in the first for the young 10 Vinson well, the double of course sets the lineup for the Daytona 500 Kyle Larson has started at the back of the 500 field every one of the last two years, so there's nowhere else to go but for him, but Larson said he has a specific goal for this matchup and let's get that 42 home unscathed. They don't want any damage to this Daytona 500 car because he believes that will give him the best chance to win on Sunday and that's what counts the most, Larry, yeah, you know, Mike, Jeff and Vance.
I always like to be in the second duel because that way I could watch the first duel and get a feel for the lay of the land. The strategy was to see how the cars handled. The first thing that takes me away from doing it. Communicate with the driver. I don't know about the group chat. I don't know what Sarah decided. Make sure your work knows when it's coming. to pit road under green power Thanks, I hear you Larry absolutely, tonight's sports performance track packages last year Ford swept the duel races Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano, they're halfway there this year with Joey Logano, the winner of Duel 1, has now won four of the last five Duels again 60 laps 150 miles is the distance 38 to 42 laps on one tank of fuel and speed on pit road 55 miles per hour pants staying at Bluegreen Vacations Daytona Seabreeze getting ready for today's duel from a pool float race to relaxing on the beach deck Pam had a race day experience without having to go to the track, how about Donnell enjoying that command ?
He was a multi-time champion at the old Danbury Quarter Mile Racing Stadium in Connecticut. His son Randy, a three-time Busch champion, and his grandson Corey came out. here tonight starting 18th as we get ready here at Daytona the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD again leads the field this time we're going green okay Mike we saw Ricky Stenhouse jr. pushing, he was a lot in front, he was aggressive, what are we going to see from Alex Bowman, who will start from the pole of the duel at nine, Chevy, two Toyotas, the rest are the Ford green flag in the air and three wide ones, Michael Mcdowell, going to the outside of Kyle Larson, oh look at the Harvard knife, I would say Harvick is the guy to watch in this race, you have a map, a dead man doesn't depend on his rear bumper, it will give him a big push.
William Byron going backwards and Jimmie Johnson going backwards. above Matt D trying to do something with Harvick Johnson right in front. I think they'll get together and start working to move forward, but there's already a big difference, a lot of sparks coming out of that '48 Jimmie Johnson car, but we started with that outside lane. he just didn't line up and stay in line and that's what separated them and now that the inside line is forced to have a good time Alex Bowman leaves the first lap, he took a couple of touches from Kyle Busch, but Busch still has not shown up.
In second place he has Erik Jones as his partner filling his mirror and again, like in race one, in the first few laps there is a lot of sparking, low air pressure and these guys and the cars are entering the track and dragging a lot like We see Kurt. Busch in the middle as again Kevin Harvick loves that outside lane that takes him three open Johnson regroups in seventh depending on entering outside in eighth Kurt Busch will have to regroup completely in the back of this field team formed alongside Kyle Larson, believe. One of the things I learned from the first race is that these cars have to be pretty stable, Mike, because when you're so aggressive when you drive like that, they're not afraid to go three times as often as we've seen in the first race. and now the two racing cars should be quite stable.
I don't know, Jeff three wide on lap two. Hey, no, that's what I'm saying, it should be and again, these are good conditions, these are good track conditions, so the car will have a little bit more. gripping retic stepping back a little bit in the middle ground Timmy Hill at 66 has to run his way and there's Corey Lajoie at 32 yeah both guys already went through Brendan Gaughan you know you go into these matchups and you wait I hope I get the green flag and we go side by side for a couple of laps. I can kind of get a feel for this race car when it's driven and I get familiar with 200 miles per hour in the draft, well that hasn't been the case during this race so that's the battle there fifty-four Yalie in the hill 66 those are the two drivers trying to make their way and you'll see them side by side a lot Ninh yeh Lee has a lot of experience so I think you know write down that experience that could be developed for Yalie here's Harvick going in the lead.
I knew these two were going to be able to work well together. DiBenedetto and Harvick will find their way to the front. They got there in a hurry, too fast. Fords on the inside with a Byron where he came from, he went to the back and met Alain, he is third on the inside and he saw that these two were moving very well across the field between Harvick and DiBenedetto and he held on to them. and they dragged him along with him, now Kyle Larson regroups alone there towards the last sixteenth in the 42nd and has no helpers.
I mean, you have Ross Chastain, who is actually, in a way, a teammate because he's a Chip. Chastain, Ganassi Racing car, with our Fox visor camera. I love this shot nostalgically, you know when it's three wide like Jimmie Johnson is, but when you're up front like Alex Bowman or Harvick, yeah, I love it up there. Jimmie Johnson tried to bust. up the middle there in ninth place and Kurt Busch doing a good job on the outside, like I said, regrouping, getting back to the front, the smooth big shot from the 20th of Erik Jones, that his teammate Kyle Busch moved up there, took it right to the rear bumper Bowman's 88 doesn't give up Bowman on the outside now another conclusion again, we talked a lot about this, but in the duel one we saw that these Ford front bumpers are so flat, the rear bumper so flat that they can Pushing and getting together better than anyone else gives them a slight advantage, especially at the end of the road.
Here you see Kyle Busch trying to get that material while he tries to push the rear bumper, Alex Bowman's 88. Kyle Busch was asked on media day who the face is. from NASCAR now says I don't know you'll have to ask why they asked me, they said well who is the best driver in NASCAR right now and he straightened up and said you're watching and you know what. when you come out of a championship race like you did well, you could say that Ricky Cole Custer inside is fourth in line inside and Stewart Haas 41 rewards two Chevys up there, you can see William Byron coming in trying to reach the outer edge. of DiBenedetto's rear bumper when you're going to push, you want to be on that outside corner because that's going to keep the car straight, don't try not to turn that car, Vince, you guys took a look at that Cole Custer '41 and it looked and sounded very calm and relaxed when I talked to him before he got in the car tonight, but then his father was standing a few steps away, not that far away, so I assumed his father was joking with Esther.
I told him who's more nervous, you're him. He said there is no doubt about it, the father is not a problem for the 41. Oh Custer, so far, Vince, two places up, is a 21 Matt DiBenedetto, he told me that he handles even more crucially the cars so erratic with this package in the draft, but remember it's a sturdy little one. He is a Super Speedway racer and he led 49 laps last year in the 500 before getting caught up in a crash that put him there with his four other teammates, Harvick, a new team for DiBenedetto. Paul Menard retired in the offseason, vacating the Wood Brothers race, and Matt D stepped in. says he's having fun says they're the old school Wood Brothers and they're fun I think they're a great combination I think they're going to have a lot of fun and have a lot of success this year, but I especially think of that team here at Daytona Matt had a great Daytona 500 last year.
We know the Wood Brothers story here at Daytona is one of the best, so they'll have fun working on lap 10 of 60 in the second of the Daytona showdown. 12

laps at Daytona aerial coverage provided by Goodyear chases the possibilities open discovery in each corner Goodyear more motivated Kevin Harvick continues to lead but one thing you almost never see is that Kyle Busch is shuffled, he went from second to 13th now with only two Toyotas in the race it's part of the plan well, I don't know, it's his teammate Erik Jones who is very surprised. I can't imagine this being part of the planet.
I didn't see this hand through the window. I don't know if Erik Jones is trying. to block a run coming behind him from Kurt Busch, but you see something like what you said Mike, it's very strange that Kyle Busch goes back like that and shuffles, put that outside lane since he shuffled. I thought they had done it. a little bit of ground on our leader Kevin Harvick, they have Alex Bowman leading that outside lane back to the front, you have two Fords locked together at the point, there's Harvick and DiBenedetto, then Byron's Chevy on the inside and the custard Ford14.

laps and Larry looking back at double number one, what are you thinking in this pit window, yes, they actually ran a little deeper in that first duel.
I thought on lap 19 or 20, we'd see them coming, but it was the Chevrolet teams that came. About lap 23, one lap later, the Toyotas and the Fords were going up to lap 30, they were almost splitting this duel in half. I still think once we cross that 20, you'll start to see some of them group up. pit lane probably just for fuel, well Alex Bowman has done it, he's brought that outside line to the front, that was so impressive to him, you see you have the same amount of cars and the outside lane versus the inside lane, so all it takes is for you to be able to put a car like Erik Jones on your rear bumper to give you that push and here we already see both cars, Kevin Harvick and Bowman's 88 fast race cars, you know, guys, the indicated. What I keep seeing is that around 15 laps, whether on new tires or used tires, the outside lane becomes the lane to be in and I think it's simply because handling comes into play and the guys below get tense or they're just I can't keep it wide open and keep the car in front of them as close as they need.
I think you brought up a really good point, Jamie, because I saw something that Alex Bowman did. He went down and was very aggressive on the lateral draft as well, I think DiBenedetto and you saw him at that moment he lunged forward so I think you're right. I think if he can go down to the outside and let those guys loose, they're probably going to have to lift the draft a little bit now the inside lane has completely broken down here, that's Ross Chastain's first car on the inside, everyone's been looking for the top side and Matt Yocum has found out what happened that dropped Kyle Busch from 2nd to 13th Mike, all about the schedules for this. duel is about building a notebook for the 500 Kyle Busch pulled out and dropped back to see what his deepest distance in the draft would be, you can see now that he is moving forward in the back, although he said that the car was a little bit on the free side the rear certainly off the race track so it was part of a plan since then he moved up to fifth place call me old school Mike.
I like Dale Earnhardt senior's rule book and that's be out front because that's where I plan to be all day, yeah he does it all the way to Victory Lane. JJ Yeley is first between the two race cars at Timmy Hill, one of them will hit 500 and now this group has gone single file as we get closer to the opening of the pit window here and a couple of laps there's the race in battle keeping a close eye on Brendan Gaughan has moved back further he's in the race in time for Sunday so the race is between these two the alien hill comes in at a third distance this time it's Bennett another great race up now mica we saw me next to each other for several laughs what 15 16 laps before they started to form a single file like they are now I wonder maybe a little more rubber on the track after race one so maybe Maybe that outside pace is starting to take over because Jamie McMurray Mitch and the handling are starting to fade a little bit for the guys on the inside lane, my concern now is that Jeff is pulling cleanly off the pit lane, we saw that in the first race, not all.
I could do that and I just have to believe that you have to communicate if you're at the top of the spotter stand and you're telling the other spotters to say we're going into the pits. I just don't think it's worth trying to fool everyone. and don't tell anyone you're pinned until turn three Brennan Poole off the pace in the 15 JJ Haley Among the biggest movers in this event is Ty Dillon at the top of that list, yes Tyler Redick, he got dragged back to the beginning of this race. and he had to get around in some of these cars.
I think he has a much faster race car, but that group separated from our leading group. Now you have some work to do. Dillon started 15th, has moved up to 6th and there is his new teammate. 2020 ready, yeah, and you could see the rest of the group that he's drafting in front of him is in that outside lane, so Tyler etics tries to run that short line and tries to make up some ground in the corners, but I really think He is lost in the draft and He will be in trouble here for the rest of this race without caution during these 21 laps so far.
The windows are open now the last time the Fords stopped and before they stopped they were running the fastest laps of the race in a group of six. or seven cars at the back of the track while everyone else had pitted and we had a lot of debate about whether that was intentional, we think they just fell for what was really going to turn out well, it really worked. Well, for them, unfortunately, they had that miscommunication incident coming onto pit road and it really took away the advantage they had. They were really going to come out of pit road.
I think with a couple seconds lead, Bowman comes out on the high side and won't pit this time. that train single file to the line fourteen cars in a second and a half and you just have to think, I know Jimmie Johnson isn't thinking about this right now, but each of these events, if it happens, could be the last time that experience that. It's Alex Mullins radio, there are four Chevrolets in the top seven Bowman Kurt Busch ty Dillon and William Byron will want to pit together so that when they come off pit road and accelerate again they can be in the draft at a competitive speed, There goes Alex.
Bowman, there goes Larry from the other Chevy, yes, this is the exact turn. It seems to me that the interior of the Chevrolet team went into the pits. They are at the bottom, probably this time they will come. Chastain Larson on Johnson and Redick will probably come with them and here are mints when Kurt Busch was told he took a little break when you come in to warm up the brakes a little to make sure they stop you in the box. Just a little help for balance is the only complaint for Kurt Busch, otherwise he likes Matt and more.
On very quiet pit road on radios 80 and 48, since those Chevrolets are in, it will be fuel only for Jimmie Johnson and they are already off pit road. You know, the Toyota team members are on the wall. Nine Chevrolets enter the pits together and leave. along with fuel alone, so the two Toyotas and the eight Fords are still on the track here at 24 laps. Now what's a little different here is that we saw that in that duel they were lined up together and making a great lap time right there, you saw them go. toward the inside of McDowell's 34, they're going to line up and try to run as hard as they can to get that lead like we saw and they're going to make one, so if the two Toyotas get together when they get back up to speed, would they? they need more than two cars oh, they are not going to pit alone, they are going to try to pit with these sports cars, but the disadvantage they have is that they don't know if they are going to pit because they are in front of If they were following these guys , they could just follow them to pit road, so if these boards decide to take off and pit alone then they can leave them out, but I think it benefits the Toyotas and the Fords to keep them all together because of the number. of drafty cars and the speed they go, of course, you might want to check the chat room, son, let's go to the group chat, yeah, no emojis needed. 25 full laps, now they could go all the way to lap 38 or 40, but there's no advantage to doing it, yeah, no real advantage.
You know, the only advantage is that maybe you use a little less fuel at that stop when you finally get to the pits because you don't have as many laps left even though you're a little bit you've used a little more fuel brendan gaughan is down a lap now he's already made it to the Daytona 500 at speed these guys are racing hard even though they know what this means this means starting the Daytona 500 one of them will win No, that's what's at stake here, we're talking give and take , there's no give and take between these two, well that change is about a quarter of a million dollars whether you start this race or not, or whether you have to go home tonight.
PJ McCloud, 52, is locked in the race, he's Yalie Rick's teammate, we're racing. Florida's McCloud wasn't able to run a qualifying lap, they had problems and changed engines before the duel, but he will try to help his teammate here. the race, well it looks like maybe the roller Joy is trying to help Timmy Hill in the 66, it's getting a little drafty and the help of Corey Lajoie in the 32, side by side, this could be quite interesting to watch, maybe that green flag will stop what's going to happen. makes a difference, well it would be throwing the biggest dummy if the two Toyotas found themselves on the race track with all those Fords behind them hitting the brakes and heading to pit road without them, they're done, Mike, if they're coming alone, their career ends.
If a caution doesn't come out because they won't be able to run as fast as that larger group, you know there are bigger Chevy drafts led by William Byron from 12th onwards and you can see we have a similar situation with Jimmie. Johnson and I think it's Ross Chastain, they've lost the four in front of them, Bowman, Larson, Kirk Bush and Ty Dillon, and I think Byron is in that group too, not only are Timmy Hill and JJ Haley running one at a time side by side, but they are also at the top. ten halfway next time, so again I really see these guys doing a very similar strategy to the Toyotas and the strong ones from what we saw in duel one, they are using the draft using their group to always run that they can try to build a lead before they get to green, get back to those green flag stops, Larry, yes, this would be the lap where the Ford team would enter the first duel, but I'm almost thinking about baking those Toyotas, make them come to the pits and then run another lap unless they just keep running here, but this is the left.
The Ford teams came to the first duel, not to this second round. Larry because they are outside in slower traffic. Look inward trying to block that run. He does a good job with Erik Jones. He now he is. You have to move forward to block the 18 achieved, but we saw that this can be dangerous. You have to be very careful with that big run that comes if you block it too much. Jimmy. I think he did an excellent job, somehow stopping Erik's 20. Jones picked up the 18 perfectly and that benefits Jones because he is no longer in front of those helmets, so now it is assured that the 20 can pit, when the Fords do, they will have to pit in the next seven or eight laps.
I really think as long as they catch this group in front of them and are making up time, it will only benefit them at the back Jamie, what do you think you learned in the first race? Yeah, I mean, I've been watching them, Jeff, and they're running half a three-quarters of a second faster than the Chevys that stopped before and now you know they had the benefit of the draft of some of those guys that lost that draft leader, so this if there is no warning this is a home run for Kyle Busch Kevin Harvick Matt DiBenedetto those guys who were left out if we don't get a warning I think they will be four or five six seconds ahead of those guys who have stopped before how is Kyle Busch going to Know when the Fords will stop and how much time do we have to react?
Yeah, I mean, there's no way unless they tell Kyle Busch he's there, too bad he can look in the mirror now. I mean, hey, he's a two-time champion. I could pull something off like that, but I really think that unless they tell him and we get into his plan or maybe they listen to the audio, maybe he can tell which turn they're going to attack him, it sounds like Now they're coming, they have to have careful. In the same situation, they have some extended cars. Hit it. I would stick my hand out the window right now so you could see.
Braddock knows they're coming and so does Chastain, so they leave. to the high side and here they all come led by Kyle Busch, two Toyotas and a bunch of Fords. Vince, well, 22-year-old Cole Custer, with that red 41, has three Cup starts under his belt, but he's in the duel for the first time and the car got really tight toward the end of that race, so They are going to make an adjustment to try to give the car a little more handling. Look for strategy up and down pit road. The cars go on the right side. Kyle Busch's 18 are losing 20 overall and are far away.
I thought that would divide that group more than it depended on. Eddo and Jones got right side tires and had to stay in the pits a little longer to consume more fuel. that allowed them to take those tires on the right side and not lose anything Michael McDowell stops now Corey Lajoie JJ Yeley making his stops and recycling back to Kevin Harvick here's William Byron leading ty Dillon look at this big lead that they have now that they have they have They have to organize, they have to unitebecause these guys are all stacked on top of each other carrying great night speed into turn three, if these other Fortson Toyotas in front of them can organize themselves again, that advantage goes to those drivers. and teams Timmy Hill and JJ Yeley stopped at the same time and exited together, that battle will continue for the next 26 laps.
I think he was very well executed and I have to give a lot of credit to Cole Custer because you know he's a rookie. One of the first times he had to make a green flag stop, a lot of pressure on him, everyone came to the pits. I thought very, very well, six seconds is the difference between the first and second group as we go Fox Nascar side by side. team with 26 laps to go 22 laps to go as they cross the strip at Daytona a five-car draft led by Kevin Harvick Kyle Busch Matt DiBenedetto David Ragan and Erik Jones a big day of basketball comes Saturday on Fox first action from the Big 10 as Purdue battles Ohio State at 11:30 ET, followed by a Big East clash between Georgetown and 19th-ranked Butler.
Both games are also available on the Fox Sports app, so in the race in the department, note that Brendan Gaughan in 15th will get the race in place if nothing changes and JJ Yeley and Timmy Hill continued the battle, but Hill had the fastest qualifying time, so if Brendan Gaughan is 15th, Timmy Hill would come into the race at qualifying speed, yeah those guys are going to need something to happen because I just don't see how they can grab Brendan Gaughan and drag him back 21 to go, you know, I saw this package here and the way they execute that green flag stop and I go back.
I think it was last year Kevin Harvick and his team did exactly the same thing. I don't think they came into the pits leading like they did here, they came in second behind the 18th or at least behind the 18th, but they did an impeccable job changing the pits. the front, you know, guys. I went back a couple nights ago and watched the duel races from a year ago with Kevin Harvick in the one gate, why did he win? gate one, he spent the least amount of time on pit road during his pit stop when I look at the pit stops that were made for only two tires, guess who was the fastest team for two tires, pit crew number four by Kevin Harvick, Oh Are We Faster? that Chevy, yeah, you're fine right now, say everyone will stay in line, the guys in our group behind us until the end, so I want to keep digging, making time, that's Tim Fedewa on the roof, former driver of the Xfinity Series and a good one talking to other observers and have a plan in advance, so it doesn't seem to be a coincidence that the Toyotas facing the fast group offer good results.
If you want this strategy to work you need to have some friends with you and know that there is a good group of Fords that were fast but needed some others to adopt this strategy and that's why I think this is working for them because of those other two Toyotas , so right now William Byron's group in Jimmie Johnson's group are faster than buying the leader pack is JJ Haley, man, that's a bummer, that's not the way you want your duel in the end and your chance to make the Daytona 500 and the former USAC champion in the top lane became the wall Corey Lajoie on pit road and you saw that William Byron was threatened on his way through some of those cars that had caught.
Here's a repeat. Looks like Gayly's 54 just got cut into the right rear quarter of the 32. Lovejoy remembers the 32 of the 66 were working together to try to pick to get ahead of these guys, not sure how much contact there was, listen here, just I don't know if the Yalie observer knew what race Corey Lajoie had going into that outside lane, say yes, he saw William. Byron jumped in there. I don't know if Yaly really reacted to that as the outside lane had a big race ahead of him and just like the first race, the first yellow flag of the event eliminates one of the challengers who was trying to run in his direction. . in the 500, in this case former USAC champion JJ Yeley, there are 18 laps left.
Oh, William Byron is coming to the pits. Oh, he was going to saddle up. I think they thought the pits were open, but now we know what he's going to do, so that tells me some of these. The guys a little further back could come in and put four tires on so they can be really aggressive when this thing goes green again. Yeah, I think when I look ahead, we're going to fall back to Grayson, probably with about 13 or 14 laps left. If you're in the top six, five or six, yeah, you're out, but if you're in the back like Alex Bowman, Jimmie Johnson, Tyler Eddy, come get you for new tires, make that thing drive better, there's the radio William Byron.
Always here to help, check it out, remains closed as officials search for debris emerging from Turn 4, where JJ Yeley went up and crashed into the wall. All this leads to Sunday, the most important day in stock car racing with which every dream begins. a dreamer this is the race where the legends are me everyone has imagined øystein dystrophy whose lifelong dream will come true is the great american race the cover starts at 11:00 a.m. m. ET, you know, we talk all year about how long the season is and then we talk all winter about how long the offseason is going to be now that we're ready.
It's very exciting to be back in Daytona and start the speed weeks here. We had a wild week in the Bush class on Sunday and have had some great races here. the duals, so even more excited about Sunday's race, the Daytona 500 is now open and there will be a lot of activity. Ty Dillon leads William Byron and the rest Vince, well it's interesting that you guys noticed that William Byron almost made it to the pits too early. Williams said not paying attention to the transmission of the pit lights saved him, it's a little too tight right now on the 24 banners they planned for Alex Bowman's 88, the plan all along came to get four tires, Jimmie Johnson's 48 was conveying that to his team.
The car was a little nervous later in that race, especially against the wall, but Bowman wanted to come get new tires, they better call to go all the way. Now Kyle Larson only has two tires. You see him come out of the image. first out of the pits by a wide margin, followed by Byron and Bowman, well I think Larson just felt like he needed some track position, maybe he feels his cars drive well enough for the guys he'll be racing against ahead of him anyway, they took two to the right. side tires, so by my count Larson will line up sixth for the restart, five cars are out, let's take a look at tonight's Bluegreen holiday race recap.
Joey Logano again, the winner of the double one, Justin Haley makes his way and Reed Sorenson in his qualifying time from The weekend will be in the Daytona 500 here in race two Kevin Harvick trying to repeat his double victory from ago one year. It would be a real repeat because I think Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick won the duels last year, right, oh, we have things. 14 There are 15 laps left and we are back on green, so Harvick, the leader in Ford, Kyle Busch's Toyota, there is the winner of the first race. Joey Logano's Matt DiBenedetto car goes to David Ragan.
What if Reagan retired at the end of last season? That driver from Georgia did it, but he's here competing in the 500 just once, he says he has a busy year ahead, he'll be Ford's test driver for the new generation of NASCAR all year long, and he says he'll keep a clean suit and helmet ready. on the shelf in case a call comes here, he is very calm. I'm tired. I don't think he's retired, but they picked a great guy. I mean, I think he has a lot of experience to be able to help with that and NASCAR with that.
The schedule now for those of you looking for Arizona at Cal College Basketball can currently be seen on FS 2. We'll have all the action here on fs1 after the race, which only has 15 laps left to go. That's certainly the last thing I think. Kevin Harvick I wanted to see they execute that green flag stop again perfectly like they did last year, but now stack them up again, I have to run again and we saw what kind of racing happens when these cars are next to each other after the restart, they brought the pit road record to pick up BJ McClure instead of JJ Yeley's number 54 car and that's why we're going to add a lap here before we go back to green.
Well, who do you like? Kevin Harvick is trying to win it for the second year in a row. or our Series champion Kyle Busch, well there's something that we saw materialize at the beginning of this race that brought Kevin Harvick to the front and he's right behind him and that's Matt DiBenedetto, so I like Kevin Harvick's chances with These two guys, I think I have a great chance to get ahead of the rest of the group. Wood Brothers always seemed to bring a fast car to Daytona and Talladega, that seems to be their specialty. Jamie Larry, who do you like?
Yes, I totally agree with what Jeff says. I saw Matt. Right behind Kevin, I think those two will be the two fighting for the win. Look, we only have 15 laps left and it took about 15 laps for those lanes to transition to the top, so I think we'll see two. wide run similar to what we saw in that first duel, but I really like that inside lane with Harvick on DiBenedetto. I don't know how in the world you would bet against Kevin Harvick in that 4 car, hey Jesus, I think he has his number right now and he has that track position and again, big shout out to his pit crew, they had two stops faster with two tires and they came to the pits, well, guys, I don't know if I would bet on Kyle Busch.
But what I learned last year is to never bet against now, I sure can't rule that out and you know he's hungry. He finished second to watch 500 last year. He's checking boxes and one of those boxes he has. What remains to be noted is that the Daytona 500 now means he has to win this duel, no, but I think it's a statement that he wants to make and get the absolute best starting position on Sunday in the 500 to try. . get that first win right Harvick is trying to equal history along with Joey Logano because only once in the history of Daytona International Speedway have two drivers won their dual races two years in a row, the same pair of drivers and both are in the Hall of Fame Victory.
The famous Joe Weatherly and Daytona Beach's own fireball, Roberts, when these races were 100 miles in 1961 and '62, won, that then called the twins, now the duels want them consecutive years, that is met with a Pretty good company to be in, yes, I would. be and we may have future Hall of Famers in there between those two and Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano, so we have five drivers on worn tires at the front of the field, Kyle Larson on two tires restarting sixth and the rest of this field restarts with new tires I really believe that if you are Kevin Harvick or Kyle Busch, clean air is your friend and you are good, you will be fine with those tires as you get further and further back, the tires will become a problem, now You know, if you're Erik Jones, I think that's where I really wouldn't want to be on older tires since the last checkered flag waved at Homestead in November.
Kyle Larson has run 20 races that he has won around the world. a couple of times running, sure our New Zealand, Australia, everywhere, Chili Bowl, here we go, 13 laps to go to the green flag, all according to plan for Kevin Harvick on that start with a good push of DiBenedetto with that outside lane. I felt like I was formed a little earlier. the inside lane so Kevin will have to block a little bit, yeah he won't be able to do it, here comes a big run from Kyle Busch, so if you can't hold up top, hit him down low.
Wow, go to the shortest one. correct route 12 laps to go Vince, well you know David Ragan's 36 officially retired with the blessings of full-time competition, but he always seems to run well here at Daytona and there he's fighting himself in that top group, but they're right on the fuel consumption number, so keep an eye on that 36. They think they have enough to make it to the finish line, but they're not quite sure right now. Kyle Busch is one of David Ragan's 36 to close that gap. and here it comes with that inside lane right now, maybe formed a little better, except for that big push from the Ford Reagan.
God Reagan and he's going to push Kyle up even with Kevin Harvick for the lead, well the cow can get there but he just can't keep it up and that's what happens when you get that big push you get a big push but then you lose your help in the draft and that pushes you towardsback. You see Jimmie Johnson trying to stop that outside lane. Oh, Tyler etic making a pretty aggressive move to the outside to surround Cole Custer three wide, that's not going to pay. Oh, that didn't work. No one went to him for newbies to find help I guess, especially when the guy you're dealing with. pass is another rookie Harvick was asked today in the media center where you want to be here in the last lap, he said always up front, always in a position to try to control your own destiny, yeah, I mean, you saw right there, like who tried it. to control both lanes when I knew the room was up by Kyle Busch I'd rather agree that you want to be in front because if those guys start running behind them when we see Kyle Busch move to the inside lane, they start racing each other . and usually the race doesn't materialize as you would like before, you think there are nine laps to go and the outside line is gone here.
Ross Chastain has to ease off the gas a little as they enter turn one. I haven't talked much about this it's not a big rear wing on the back of this car with a lot of horsepower in a big hole so you get a huge trap that's why Chastain is letting off the gas Kyle Busch isn't is happy. he's going to go on the outside, Ty Dillon with some help from Ross Chastain and here comes Kyle Larson to help. Pretty good move by Kyle Busch. Another great career comes working at Jimmie Johnson. He now he doesn't have any help this time, so he has to have.
Somebody go with him, Dillon will probably wrap you up with Jimmie Johnson and he does and here comes Tyler Atic to the rear bumper so some Chevrolets line up yeah that'll hurt Kyle Busch and Erik Jones in third the other Toyota no is in position. to help Kyle Busch right now, yes, not at all, no, I mean, maybe he could have jumped in there to try to help, but he knew that he was going to take a big risk. He's pretty happy with where he is right now. Third, this falls apart. until the last two laps, maybe he'll have a chance and win this duel right there, which will help Kyle Busch probably do him more harm than good.
Back to the single file and get back into the top ten, which is Michael Mcdowell and then Kyle Busch on the outside eleven seven to go Kyle Larson with those two tires restarted six these currently ten yeah, I think right there, yeah Dirk definitely not I would have seen Kyle Busch going to the inside of Michael McDowell, I think if Kyle had been a little more patient. right there and waited maybe one or two more laps and if those cars were stacked up behind him, he probably would have had someone come with him because Larson and Reddick, these guys want to go, they don't want to just stay in that inside lane, I just think. who want to make sure they eliminate someone when they do well, so let's play this game over the phone or group chat or whatever you want to call it, how can you get help together to go out to pass and win well at this point unless you knew you were going to have three, four or five cars that were willing to take that risk.
You have to stay in line until the last lap, yes, maybe a lap and a half, something like that, people will go out to try to win this race, there are points. There's a big trophy on the line and a lot of pride in walking through the garage area to get this win, but I can tell you right now that I don't think DiBenedetto is going to take the risk. I think he takes 4. by Kevin Harvick Timmy Hill has moved up to the final position of the race in 16th Brendan Gaughan would be on time as they are running now everyone else is in the race, it's just a matter of where They will start and that Based on the finish in five laps, we will see David Ragan being sent off.
I don't know if it's because he feels like he's low on fuel. It happened that he kept. There goes Kyle Larson out. He has some help from Chastain, but again I think. This is too early to make that outside move work, you know guys, I want to ask you. I see the Ford and I can afford the Toyota, but what about those six Chevrolets lined up right behind them? Will they be content to sit back there? The feeling would probably necessarily be no, no, no, not at all, Larry, but it's just what turn you start trying to make that move.
I think right now, with four laps to go, it's still a little early, but look at the bow ties on our If there is one group that is going to go as a group, you think it would be the Chevrolet, if they can do it all together, you will be surprised, especially with this writing package, how quickly those careers can materialize and how quickly you can do it. back that inside lane, so keep an eye on William Byron and Kurt Busch's, Jimmie Johnson's 48, if they get a run, they go to the outside. I think they can make something happen.
I just don't know which turn it is. It's going to happen man, I'm with Jeff, the races come up so fast, the key is you want to be the first one out when you know everyone is going with you, you don't want to be the guy that quits and no one went with you shooting William Byron in the outside he has help back DiBenedetto took the block and now you're stuck there you are Kevin Harvick you have no momentum here comes a big push Jimmie Johnson the 1 from Kurt Busch look at this race that the 24 Byron is going to come down the back immediately Harvick went up to the draft side can't do anything about it here comes the Chevy's Wow that was a little earlier than I thought they were going to go, but so far so good, it's already clear what they're going to do for two more laps.
Harvick needs DiBenedetto on his bumper and this is where it gets complicated if you are William Bar and want to win this matchup. Do you go down and try? block that Kevin Harvick inside lane if it starts to materialize there goes Jimmie Johnson in the back yeah I think William has to get right in front of Jimmie Johnson's 48 2 to make a fantastic move by Byron and that whole group of chevys to go with him Well, and I have to believe that he knew that someone was going to go with him, so he was in a great position, but this is not a bad thing.
Watch him bounce as Jimmy Johnson gives William Byron a push. I mean, I think right now, William. can go that far because it's his teammate Jimmie Johnson, if it was anyone other than Jimmie Johnson, I think it's too big a gap, one to go, one lap to go, sponsored by a credit bank, Byron to the top and Johnson with him here now. a Kevin Harvick run is coming, he'll hit the inside of Byron here for Rhodes, don't be careful Bush, yeah DiBenedetto, this will be a game changer right here if they don't get a big run on the outside.
I think Kevin Harvick is going. to get back into the lead, well, he lost the help of him there with Tibet, no contact, Kurt Busch goes for three to the corner, stacked Busch in the middle. I think you look at that 24 coming to victory here and William Byron pulls away from them three behind him William Byron by Rick Hendrick in a Chevrolet stops Ford's dominance in the duals and how they crashed before again I have no idea what race It was a beautiful job on a man's side. Kurt Busch had a great race and that kind of broke the battle as Jimmie Johnson and William Byron headed to victory, this gets pretty risky.
Look at Kurt Busch when those two get next to each other, he just takes advantage of that air that's being blocked, boy he was so close. to make contact, they made contact between him and Jimmy Johnson pushed Kevin Harvick below the yellow line, which would be a penalty for Harvick if he drove below the yellow line, not if he was pushed below the yellow line, as You will see well here. and it's about advancing your position, but yeah, he definitely got it, he got hit below the yellow line. I tell you what those guys that were in the duel one that they didn't understand, you know we're watching this race, I think they learned a lot about that. what could you do, yes there is definitely contact right there, but what can you do.
Oh, more contact between Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch, but I think they taught these guys something for the Daytona 500, you can get from fourth fifth to the back if you have enough cars behind you to go with you and Timmy Hill will be in the Daytona 500. He races to finish one spot ahead of Brendan Gaughan, who enters the 500 field at his qualifying time. Well, that was exciting, yes, until the end, Charlotte. North Carolina's William Byron heads to victory lane in duel - there's a happier driver in duel - Timmy Hill makes his way to the Daytona 500 for mbm motorsports well done william byron is out to celebrate a duel victory at Daytona Matt Mike the first car on the restart with four new tires, so there were three to go, was it the designated lap to go out and make the move or did I use the feeling, uh no, we didn't really have any, there was no order from Chevy or anything like that, we just did it. good job working together Curt was a great pusher and a great helper and I really had a lot of confidence in him.
He was really trying to go one ahead, but I had enough momentum on the tri-oval just watching old races. Pretty much how the momentum lines up, so I didn't know if I would get the same momentum once everyone started pushing with one to go, so I got there and got the second one, I guess, and then Kevin played really well and didn't. . He didn't do much, so thanks to Axalta this car looks great. I'm sure it was beautiful under the lights. I am very excited about the 500 lessons learned from watching old races. Vince is certainly worth a W tonight.
I think it's the first time. I once heard someone say that Kevin Harvick played craps and that's really what happened, you know, when they come that fast, it just puts a lot of risk in blocking and we've seen how that worked out. You have Bush Light and our Bush Ford Mustang pit to thank. We had a great car tonight and the guys did a great job. We were able to get to pit road. We made a great pit stop and put ourselves in position to have a chance. There, Matt D, he was a big pusher, but he was really the only one, against the rest of those Chevrolets and we held our own tonight, so I think we have to move fast.
The Mustangs just arrived. thanks to Mobil 1 Humber's pizza' Jimmy John's Ford Outback Mobil to everyone who helps us on this car for making a lot of speed thanks Kevin Mike Lee led a lot of laps tonight, 33 of them, in fact, more than half the race and a really veteran decision by Kevin Harvick to recognize the big race coming up and not block it to cause a big crash like we've seen earlier in the week, so the front row was sorted out last weekend in the inside lane time trials . then we'll have four Fords, the exterior will have those three Chevrolets that finished up front as we prepare for a battle royale at the Daytona 500.
Eric Jones will be first to the Toyotas on the grid in row 7 with trucks and row 8, yes. It certainly wasn't a great day of mourning for those Toyotas. I hope they are a real deal in the Daytona 500, although yes, they were outnumbered, but they are certainly not outpowered or outhanded, as they demonstrated here last year with Denny Hamlin's victory. many rookies in this field many contenders further back Kyle Busch finished 13th in their duel tonight. I mean, look at those lines you got Clint Boyer chases Elliott Denny Hamlin only two yellow flags, one in each race tonight, but each one meant a contender had to go home Daniel Suarez in the first race JJ Yeley in the second career and Chad Fincham Vince is worth cutting, did you make that elusive move to avoid Jimmie Johnson or were you going for it?
I was going for it, my team put me on the offensive with four new tires and I had a race with car 13 behind me in the middle. I knew Johnson was demanding everything he could to go with the 24 and win, but all I did was close the door on Harvick, everyone started closing and I just needed to. I need to be more aggressive to close the door at the bottom and run down the bottom rail but I tried it with the monster G. Chevy has two scratches but they will polish it up, well done Mike that matte paint doesn't require a lot of upgrades they work tomorrow in the truck race on fs1 as Alex Bowman soaks race winner William Byron the Xfinity race is Saturday on fs1 Clint Boyer and Brad Keselowski joined the broadcast and Sunday's Daytona 500 airs on Fox at continued on fs1 Arizona Wildcats versus California Golden Bears Joey Logano and a Ford William Byron in a Chevrolet emerge as winners in the Bluegreen Holiday Duel at Daytona
