Most of our story today takes place in a popular restaurant that was in Macon, Georgia. And it was a place called Lyles'.
the deadly diner anjette lyles mystery makeup bailey sarian
They were now serving American comfort food. Online sources said it was hearty meat and potatoes. Very good. Macon, Georgia, wasn't a great place in the '50s. I mean, I guess it's still not the greatest today. The population today is around 150,000 inhabitants. In the 1950s, it was half that. So when a restaurant this good shows up in a town that's super small, everyone knows about it and that's the place. And that's exactly what this restaurant, Lyles', was. It was the place. This is where people went to hang out, talk to each other, and eat good food.
You know, everyone knew each other. Excellent. And in this restaurant is where we can find the tall, beautiful and charming young woman named Anjette Lyles. Anjette was born in Macon, Georgia in 1925. She came from a very loving family. They were financially and financially stable. She did very well in high school. There is nothing strange or strange to say about her and her upbringing. She had two brothers and many friends from school who said that she, Anjette, was very popular. Yes, she was very loved. Everyone would compliment her on her beauty. And she always had guys lining up for her, who wanted to ask her out, who wanted to talk to her.
And when she left high school, you know, it was the same thing. Wherever she went, she received attention from men. She was blonde. She was tall. She was beautiful. And the men were like, ugh, let me get into that. Know? I think she liked it. I don't know. I wasn't there, but you get it. Excellent. With all that in mind, it's no wonder local boy and World War II veteran Ben Lyle notices her beauty. Now he, Ben, had just returned from the war. It was said that he himself was actually quite a catch. He was young.
He was pretty. And that's literally all I could... It's not funny. But when I looked him up, you know, because of his background, it was like he was young. He was pretty. He was a veteran of World War II. And that is. That's really all I can say. It wouldn't take long for the two to get along. They began dating and quickly got married. Anjette also entered the Lyle family business. Oh yeah. Her new husband, Ben. Ben's mother ran the local restaurant called Lyle's. Lyles Dinner. Anjette began working there in 1948 after she and Ben had her first daughter named Marsha.
And like everywhere she went, Anjette was very popular with customers. She was barely in her twenties, but she Anjette was considered the restaurant's charming new waitress. And everyone said: you have to go see it. She will take good care of you. Know? As if people came for the good food. But people also came just to see Anjette, talk to her and flirt with her. I don't know. She was known for sitting at tables with customers and having long conversations with them. And let me tell you, people loved that. They loved him. From time to time, Anjette would bring her daughter Marsha to work with her.
And since her mother-in-law owned the place, there was no problem. So she was great. And Marsha, her daughter, was there so much that she ended up becoming like the restaurant's unofficial mascot. As if everyone knew Anjette and everyone knew her daughter. And everyone knew the family in town. It was great. So Anjette was working hard. She spent years in the restaurant. Until 1951, to be exact. At that time, when she left her job, her husband, Ben, had become ill. He contracted an illness abroad during the war and was not getting better. I guess he had left her throat completely infected.
And he was in incredible pain every day, according to Anjette. The infection in her throat was so severe that her pain prevented her from working. Luckily for Ben, she had received or had been receiving a military pension. Although she could not work, she fortunately still received an income from the military pension. Anyway, in 1951, Ben's government assistance, the pension, all of that, came to an end. His medical examiner determined that he was no longer unable to work due to his illness. And after three years of paying him or receiving money from him, they decided to end it, cut it off.
Which left him in a pretty complicated situation because he hadn't saved any money since he stopped working. And while Anjette worked at the restaurant, Ben spent his nights drinking and gambling. Oh. And although you may not know it, it is at that moment that the Lyle family suddenly finds itself quite in debt. It is believed that Ben had been racking up gambling debts since long before the war. Not to mention that he had been adding more since he lost his job. The debt had become so bad that Ben's mother, her name is Julia. Take note of that.
Julia decided to step in and help. I mean, it's her son and she wants to help, you know? She then decides to sell the restaurant. Oh yeah. And then, with that money, I hope to help her son get out of her debt. Do not ask questions. Just accept that this happened because Julia ends up selling the restaurant for $2,500. I know. Has no sense. I have no idea why that happened and why so little. But she did it. It was said that she was actually her only option and that selling him was the last thing she wanted to do.
And it was devastating for her. But family is more important. This was not only devastating for Julia, Ben's mother, but also for Anjette, who basically made this job at the restaurant like everyone else in her world. Yes. It was everything to her. So when she discovered that the restaurant had been sold, she was outraged and disappointed. And she said so that she really drove a wedge between her and Ben. Ben didn't even tell him what was going on. And she had to discover all this once it was done. Am I making sense? Excellent. I hope so.
Now, what's crazy is that, almost right when the government took away his benefits and the doctors started telling him, "You're getting better, you can go back to work," Ben immediately became seriously ill again. He talks about bad timing because he had already lost access to everything. But whatever was going on with him was getting much worse. And when he went to the doctors, they had no answers as to what was happening and what the cause could be. They say, I don't know. Ben ends up being in the hospital for a little over two months. Again, I have no idea what's going on.
He is really sick. He has terrible nosebleeds. And his body would like to tremble, convulse. Is that the word? Around his bed. And then, in January 1952, he went into a coma. I know. I don't know. Then, a few weeks later, Ben, still in the hospital, still in a coma, sadly died without ever waking up. So this is devastating news for Anjette, right? And now, on top of this, like she has no income from her or Ben. And she doesn't know what else to do. Then she returns to live with her parents. During this time, from 1952 to 1955, Anjette worked in another restaurant, in another restaurant.
But it was more or less the same. As if she brought the charm of her. She would serve customers like she used to. But this time she tried hard and she was saving money for years. And then in 1955, after saving money, she returns to the new owners of Lyle's Diner and buys it back from them. Oh, it's true. Good for her. I mean, she tried so hard. And she bought it for $12,000. And Anjette was happy. She literally got her job back as a waitress. And she also rehired Ben's mom and she hired the same people, which is great.
I just thought it wasn't like that, which was cool. That requires a lot of hard work and discipline. And she thought that, after having invested so much time, effort and money into regaining control of the restaurant, she deserved to rename it after herself. That's how Anjette's was born. Hmm. She changed her name to Anjette. So I rebranded and hired the same team. But it was as if the restaurant had never changed. All the customers found out that this was the case, Anjette was already running the restaurant again. And everyone who used to visit her since she was 20, you know, they all came back.
It was great. I just have to admit, pretty badass, right? Own and operate. Not even mentioning, like buying your own restaurant in the 50s as a woman, a widow. That's pretty rude, Anjette. Go away girl. Too bad the story is about a murder. So not so much about everything else, but that part. I want to support you but I can't. Anyway, her restaurant is taking off. Customers are happy. Now she is happy because she got her favorite job back. Everything is yet to come for Anjette. Including her own personal life. There was a man who kept passing by the restaurant and caught her attention because he was like a handsome man.
She says what are you doing? And his name is Joe, Joe Gabbert, but everyone called him Buddy. So then I'll call him too, Buddy. He was a pilot. And the two were really flirting with each other. And before the end of 1955, the two were married. Just... (snapping fingers) Very quickly. Apparently, at some point that year, the two went on vacation together to Texas and New Mexico. And when they came back, they announced to the family and everyone that they had gotten married, which, again, for everyone, it was like, oh, okay, like they just met. Alright. Since a lot of people just didn't do it, they didn't really support this marriage.
But it is what it is. It's not your business. And, again, this is a really small town. So everyone in the community is like talking to each other. And everyone says, did you hear Anjette got married? I know. But that was just the beginning of what Macon residents would soon be whispering about Anjette. Look, like I said, Buddy was a pilot. And that meant Buddy wasn't around much. And Anjette kind of liked that. Once again, she was friendly and accommodating. And it wasn't long before rumors began to circulate around town that Mrs. Anjette was sleeping behind Buddy's back.
MMM. Now, to be fair, there was no evidence to back it up. But it doesn't matter because there was one thing they did know for sure about Anjette. Something people loved to talk about. Do you see Anjette? She was known to like witchcraft. Yes of course. (witch laughs) All of Macon County is like Anjette's in witchcraft. She is a witch. I know she comes out of nowhere. So apparently Anjette would like to go see the local psychic quite often. And people would see her doing this. And they say she's weird. And then some people, or some of Anjette's employees, came up and said they would see her in the back of the restaurant, surrounded by a bunch of candles and voodoo dolls, like she was performing some kind of satanic ritual.
No one knows if that's true either, but that's okay. Anyway, when rumors about Anjette's character began to spread, tragedy struck again. In October 1955, the same year she married him, that it would be better to represent herself so she could speak directly in court rather than having a lawyer. Someone in the middle. She says if I talk to them, they will believe me. Then she goes in there and makes a long statement in which she explains how heartbroken and devastated she was about this whole thing. And, you know, she never imagined that she would hurt her family.
Then Anjette offered a single piece of evidence to back up her claims. Only one. Anjette appeared in court with a letter written by Julia, her late mother-in-law. Oh yeah. A letter. Now, according to this letter that Miss Julia wrote, she said that Julia was the one who poisoned Ben, who was her own son, and also Buddy, before poisoning herself for weeks and weeks.and weeks. That's what this letter said. That she had killed everyone. Julia. It was all Julia's fault. So Anjette, again, had this proof. Anjette told her maid to pretend and say that she was the one who found the letter in one of Julia's bags.
She says, yes. Tell them. And how do we know this happened? Well, her maid ends up taking the stand and she literally tells everyone: Anjette wanted her to lie. She wrote Julia's letter. Everything was false. And she wanted me to come here and lie. As if she would make her explode. And honestly, that must have been amazing. I would have loved to see Anjette's face. She was probably angry. Well, the jury would end up deliberating for just an hour before coming back and sentencing Anjette to death in the electric chair. Naturally, Anjette appealed the sentence. But that didn't turn out the way she wanted.
But a committee ended up reviewing her case and had her take, or had her sit down with a doctor and stuff. And they discovered that she was schizophrenic, which meant that the death penalty would no longer apply to her case. I don't know whose sausage he sucked, but it's okay. Well. Because she looks, I liked to do a little research. And it was said that this doctor could have been... I don't know, it was all strange. It was a little strange, but whatever. Well, once this happened, instead of returning to prison, Anjette would be sent to a psychiatric hospital where she would remain until her death in 1977 when she was 52 years old.
Now, my favorite part. Well, it's not my favorite part. But I think this shows that Anjette was smart because one of her friends from inside her, inside the mental hospital, said that she and Anjette became very close. And she Anjette told him that she would never allow herself to be classified as sane or, in quotes, cured of her mental illness. If that happened somehow, she would have to face the consequences of murdering her. And Anjette simply couldn't allow that. No no. Okay, she holds on. I'll be right back. Let me finish putting on this eyelash. I'll be right back.
Thanks for hanging out with me today. I'd love to hear the guys' thoughts on it below. If you have any. I mean, we know Anjette is guilty. She maintained the fact that she was innocent. But no, girl. How are we doing. Yeah, I don't know what happened to the kids. I hope they lived a long happy life. But other than that, yes. I mean, Anjette is just a job. All that for some money. Hey? MMM. Mm-mm-mm. Damn shame. Anyway, let me know below who you want me to talk about next week. But other than that... Oh, I will also list all the products below in the description box.
But other than that, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day and make good decisions. And I'll see you later. Bye bye. (dramatic rock music)
