Here's what's interesting: Many of the same pieces are back for both teams. It's surprising that there are names. If you look at this last year, you'll hear a lot of those same names pretty much throughout the lineup. for Shady Spring and the same on the other side for Fairmont senior, a lot of familiar faces in this one, here are the bases we'll see in the starting lineup presented by the West Virginia Coal Association and Friends of Coal Committed to Cleanup. energize your work and a better quality of life for all West Virginians who are focused on the polar bears in Fairmont senior 26-1 in the season we mentioned Dobbs is a player to watch DeSean good 6-8 senior Ford 18 points per game just passed a thousand in their career here in Charleston in the semifinal round Shady Spring everyone can score on the entire roster Braden Chapman 19 points per game Lamar Maxwell 14 points per game if you check out the veteran head coach of the polar bears from Fairmont, senior Dave Retton, who manages this program, eight state

More Interesting Facts About,

full broadcast wvssac class aaa basketball state championship fairmont senior shady spring 2023...

He puts Gower in the corner. He is their best long ball thrower. Good defense here. The man titan of the Shady Spring Tigers. Dobbs whipped him more than a gallon. Chapman and Fairmont's bullying hour. The oldest takes 40 seconds off. clock and they turn it over, yeah, so most teams you go in and say, okay, you're going to wear yourself out after 40 seconds of defensive pressure. It's not

shady

, they say you want to keep the ball for a minute, we'll continue with that. Pressure is an ideal start to that defense for Shady. The

spring

jacket coming off early for Ronnie Olson didn't last 10 seconds.

This is a night when they are going to work and it is going to get hot. Alright tigers with the ball, that's Maxwell 14. points per contest for the junior, he's had a tremendous tournament here which will be a fun matchup for him and good crowns all night for three, okay Braden Chapman in a great foul trouble in the semifinal round yesterday made the three, he's so good He'll do a lot of things, we'll talk about all these

shady

guys, but Brayden Chapman is really what drives him on both ends of the court, another senior turnover Fairmont, who is Cole Chapman, who hits the perimeter ball taken by the cam man. outstanding three-point shooter Lance works it up top takes it to Cole Chapman the Tigers will take their time in this offensive set with a lead of three and nothing from the curl Chapman lost the ball that Dobbs knocked down takes it to Gower Gower it leaves the gun Holstein outside the rim cutting Dobbs gives the offensive foul to Williams on Dobbs in the Easter to Williams and you see the relentlessness of Shady Spring, it will seem like there will be three good shots for Fairmont senior and none of them are there.

There was always someone the way you see Holstein's great athleticism on the mend, check this out, Shady Spring guys back up two blocks, a charge taken in tight spaces, yeah, Dobbs probably should have shot that one and you're right just when you think that Shady is out. of position defensively they recovered by throwing lateral demands mans throws the false head Williams bites the head and will commit the foul latique Williams the senior guard charged in his first and we will get our first free throws for cam mans the senior Mans post but good interior defense. One thing to note tonight, Travis, is the physicality of the referees so far, letting both teams go, which is probably good for both, but certainly an advantage for Shady.
If physical contact is going to be allowed tonight, I can do it first. free throw and well, you mentioned the referees, we have a good team of veterans to work with in this final game Quinton Jones is the brother Austin Jones and Dustin Smith Dustin Smith just worked the Mountain East Conference Division two women's tournament and Wheeling Austin Jones worked in the men's semi-finals, but you also saw it here on the metro news with Grant's drive into traffic missed the shot five nothing Shady with the ball all the momentum Braden Chapman works it against the good from the window and in Dave Retton will take an early timeout they have the Tigers been putting weight for this matchup against the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears and they came out with the Eye of the Tiger 7-0 Chapman and Company leading early Ronnie Olson couldn't have written this one better script seven nothing lead and they have got their best player, Braden Chapman, he was in the game from the beginning, he has seven points, well, he has been excellent on both sides, since he has been through his entire career, defensive pressure, he is relentless , he doesn't stop and then on the offensive end, you saw it on that last play. using his body to get in good shape to make contact and still make the shot one guy and five men with the other two and Chapman again, should be fresh, didn't play much in the semi-final over Scott, was loaded with foul trouble at first, but in all the games you've seen him, have you ever seen him get tired?
No, I mean, never non-stop engine, both chaplains, okay. Fairmont senior needs a 509 bucket to play in this first quarter and look. On that defense, yeah, and I was just going to say, Travis, not only is it a good team defense, but it's really just five individual elite defensemen. They all make it difficult to have a good time in the corner. Gower for three, no rebound, ball retained. Holstein leaves. be tied, but the arrow will go to Shady Spring, a very smart play by Dobbs, he couldn't get both hands on it and just tipped it well, but Shady was there for the moment at 7-0.
Shady Spring got Fairmont senior. 26-1 on the season, the only loss was to the Shady Spring Tigers, while three losses on the season, one of them to Quality Champion Morgantown in the first game of the season, a game they were in until the end , talks about tests. Yourself, they didn't shy away from anyone and looked for competition as good as you've ever seen in a high school play. Maxwell blocked by Good Good with him in the corner here's Dobbs, Fairmont's leading scorer, cut, takes it to Latique Williams right now Dobbs. Scott Holstein walks up to him and that's a big six, seven lengths.
Williams takes a low-to-good shot at Gower at this point. Fairmont senior looks for shots and can't find anything open. Grant in the corner jab steps driving Baseline running towards Olsteen and That's a great shot for Andre Grant who I think Brad is one of those guys that you underestimate on this team with a team of superstars. Braden Chapman, don't overlook it. Great shot of Grant at the other end. You're right, just explosive, but. there's Brayden Chapman again responding at the other end eight point lead for Shady Lobster Grant to Claremont I have to give them credit they are being patient everyone is touching the ball they just can't defeat what is blocked by the man defense at this time Grant will try and will hit it good right there, you mentioned it, the Fairmont senior's patience finds a little space Grant hits it for a three in the corner, missed by Cole Chapman Dobbs after the Fairmont senior stops working on the sideline Williams turns and gives it to Gower finds Dobbs, here's Grant, he didn't pull the trigger on three steady shots, he tried to bounce it under Williams Alley, he passed the cam mans and I bet Dave Retton will tell Grant the next time you see openly that you have to shoot too many hands in that lane to try to make the extra pass in this game.
Grant is one of those guys who contributed last year, but he has really stepped up his game this season and the Fairmont seniors are running back. consecutive titles so far, good zero shots. Dobbs has also been shut down. The Fairmont seniors got Cole Chapman's mismatch with good inside swings. He's in the corner. Gower can't hit from the 16th. He volleys and leans towards Colt Chapman parrying. pop three, that's a little heat check from Braden Chapman. He beats his chest, he knew that maybe she was a little out of reach for him. He dives, takes Chapman down good in the corner, hits the three there.
He you see the range from the big guy to Sean, good at. 6-8 bury the three and that's probably the early answer here Fairmont senior can get some top tier penetration there and kick for the three downed to a couple of those that can loosen it up a little Yeah, polar bears two or three of Beyond The Arc to start this game 90 seconds into an entertaining opening quarter lost Chapman stolen by Gallant March forward Grant can't finish but hey sometimes Travis is the key playing against Shady Spring and it's not like Fairmont senior hasn't done it I have seen before, but I'm getting used to PACE and the pressure takes a minute to settle.
Now you see Fairmont senior with his legs under him. The man with the camera tries to answer and rattles off an 8-0 run for the polar bears. They can shoot. Taking the lead despite a poor start takes Latik Williams to Grant his three entries and exits. Chapman clears it with 40 seconds left and Ronnie Olson raises a finger. He wants the final shot of the first quarter, probably a good call if it's Shady. I've controlled this quarter, so don't do anything here to give one tire the lead heading into the second quarter, and yet, if you're Dave Retton and the Polar Bears, Shady has controlled you and you're only two down here. in final possessions 13 seconds while Cole Chapman dribbles the clock that's Gallard is waiting for him at the top of the key Maxwell crosses the green he's going to drive with good good shots the ball comes the steals two seconds one ahead of Gower Gower is will come down a clear look at a 3-pointer missed off the rim to the left, so some good shots in the second half of the first quarter for Gower, a Fairmont senior, fell short, but we got a tight one after eight minutes .
Shady Spring went ahead by a bucket. Shady Spring started the second quarter up by two and Brad Howell in the first quarter where Camp is happier, yeah I think you go with Dave Retton there because again I thought Shady's defense was excellent, we saw Fairmont senior struggling to shoot and yet you look up at the end of the first eight minutes and you're only down two if you're the polar bears down 10-2 was Fairmont senior in the middle of an 8-0 run while they were shooting, thank you very much. partly to Andre Grant, he was the guy that really sparked the offense for Fairmont senior, yeah, and he's going to have to be right.
Zacchaeus Dobbs is going to attract a lot of attention here from Shady Spring Grant and good guys will have to be first. contributors on offense, so that goes with five of Fairmont's seniors 10. the polar bears have the ball Dobbs you have to score it's Ikea stops Zion's younger brother Dobbs who just completed his senior year at Fairmont State University He is one of the best point guards in the Mountain Eastern Conference He has another Cove of the Year to return He is a college next year Andre Grant bounces him over two Ikea stops He is a penetrator He will shoot from the outside when necessary but he likes to get it in the painted area good lofting pass taken by Dobbs penetrates kicks Gower opens three short and long rebounds collected by Grant stolen by Chapman just took it away coal racing champions trying to brake sharply and run the skin of Shady Spring and Jack Williams, the sophomore year, will come outThe bench gets murky when the Tigers bench for the first time about 52 seconds into the second quarter, but Paul Chapman was going to keep going and make it to the rack, that might have been easier considering he was going 75 miles away. one hour a lot of speed in a straight line there it's hard to hit the brakes there without dragging your foot pivot four turnovers both ways so far Grant wants to get out of the paint unless he gets out again there's Dobbs, who is mostly now a facilitator hasn't shot here yet, it's good, right at the rim and the big guy makes his way up and with a great inside pass with power and a good job to get back there, that's Holstein, a tremendous inside defender, but that It's simply too deep to always be tied at 12.
Fairmont senior has been able to survive the initial energy of the Tigers' chapel and Grant will attack me and cuts off the pass to Maxwell, he will throw a head fake, he approaches through the window, no . Holstein tips it over, but Good wins, the rebound causes the ball to be knocked down for a foul, but Good has been really good from the start, hasn't he? Haven't you seen him on the offensive end and showing some toughness with all that contact to get? there and fight on the defensive end because it's physical inside tonight, attention, the foul is on Chapman, his first yes, you look back, on the other end, you have the pair of good 11s and Holstein right now fighting on that right block and those two guys almost look like identical body types wear the same numbers, it'll be fun to watch them battle throughout this game, keep an eye on what you just saw on that last possession, Brayden Chapman under the screen, giving it to Dobbs the first three trying to keep that penetration away like you mentioned.
Before, Dobbs misses their first shot attempt together. Maxwell stands up and Shady offensively, they've gotten a little down here, so we're running into that early start and mentioning Shady's defense. I give credit to Fairmont senior here too. They really do something there. Good individual defenders too Cole Chapman throws a Looper trying to get it over the good and not accurate Gower on the other end gives him the good good decision Foreigner Fairmont senior has his first lead of the game so far Fairmont seniors extend that pressure very above the three-point line Shady can't shake them individually Chapman gets a step and scores it there he did it, the first player to double numbers Chapman has 10 Gower fixes it the good Paramount senior doesn't dribble much they like to pass the part of basketball in the corner, that's Jules Butler, a great freshman who signed up for the polar bears, now Dobbs skips it to Butler makes the catch on Fairmont's right side looking for a cut inside to get him out of well, well , against Holstein.
Holstein cuts him off, there's Dobbs. looking for a lane, he passes it to Dowell and shuts down the good three. Butler goes to deflect Jacks Williams' rebound out of bounds. Here we go to Shady Spring, so Butler noticed, but I can control it. Shady with the ball. we go back to frame 14. tied at 14 and Brad mentioned yesterday the semifinals for Sean Good to become the 15th player and Fairmont senior history to score a thousand points in his career and he's going to add to that tunnel here tonight, yeah , really versatile, you see. he here can come out and hit those three if you leave him alone, he can also follow it, get to the offensive glass and then you can come in and post them up now that there's a lot of traffic and hits inside, but he backs off to that point. that's going to be a bucket almost every time, so DeSean is good and Brayden Chapman were two stars so far in this one, good on four of six shot attempts, they got a couple of rebounds and Shady Spring trying to get that energy back that they had to start the The game has to get this guy on track here Maxwell for three and maybe that's the kickoff 17-14 Cutler threw it in the trash taking that call Chapman back to Maxwell Euro Step through, he's a smooth offensive player , Travis has been 14 points per game Maxwell five in a row, little Max, a little 5-0 streak, according to Leo's law, is for the first time at number one in blue, those are the kind of possessions you can't have if you're a Fairmont senior, those live turnovers that convert directly to points follow he drops it until well matched with Holstein returns to the perimeter crossing Dobbs kicks it throw it Maxwell steals wide that man takes it D3 good throw down the rebound well, what's interesting Brad and we've seen this from Zacchaeus Dobbs throughout his career he starts games after the first things get tough, you get there late and it's time to win, that's when it starts to shoot and drive, yes, he did it last year with that game-winning shot to win this state title, but I think if you're a Fairmont senior, you're going to have to go in on Dobbs and look for him to get some penetration.
Now that's easier said than done against Chapman, but you'll need Dobbs to score here very soon, I think in for good. Well, he's broken that and how about that force, no less than three Shady Spring Tigers had a hit with that ball and well, he says a note passed him that ball goes in, do you think it draws some attention to put three guys up there, all with their hands. In it, he hangs fights through contact for one and one, the foul is. In the chamber, the man let him know that one entered. Sean, a good 61 percent free throw shooter, 6-8 senior, getting some love in division two, now these Conference teams, you know. and he's helping himself tonight, not only is he showing the scale, tremendous toughness and strength, twisting motion Maxwell, he falls hard, he's going to have to take a moment here to get up on that spin, he stops, yeah, Maxwell just doesn't He was able to stop his second fall foul. on Zacchaeus Dobbs, we took another look at Travis, we mentioned that he would referee before, they are doing a good job letting the players decide this and having to play through contact, but that will be critical in determining which team can handle that best and how come on.
Being late, how much does that wear on each side, having to go through that whole contract, Maxwell, free throw shooting, short average of 17 points per game so far in two games here in Charleston and six rebounds, and the quarters and semis per game Will Jules Butler return? on Fairmont freshman Steve Polstein, senior, the back stick didn't land right, he throws it down and Maxwell, I think he's going to be called for the reach foul, went for the tie and It became official, I had a tie, the other had. a foul and the foul is going to win has to be number one in Maxwell doing a great job just elevating I can't get the ball to land right on the actual foul was the only thing called Austin Jones was the referee closest to the play 139 to play until halftime the game was tight throughout Grant until the end and Braden Chapman denies it because of the defensive play there you thought Grant had a clear path to the basket great job by Grant to break the pressure and try to punish them by getting to the rim Chapman just with a big defensive play, although I showed you the butler came in, so Dobbs is out with two fouls here for the last 94 seconds as Ronnie Olson wants his defense to do the talking.
Grant will deliver the law now run the point the Dobbs on the bench Chapman was there Holstein guards well Gower will try again drive back to Fairmont senior 55 seconds to play second Polar Bear leads Holstein High post 42 to shoot throws it towards Maxwell Maxwell came in and that's a big ask Julia long 5-9 to try to guard him, she didn't, she also didn't get any help from the weak side after the pass came. Good work as Maxwell moved forward quickly before Good was able to slide over seven in the corner for Amar Maxwell next. no score in the first quarter, a buck in the front court, Chapman takes a cheap one right there on a reach and that's his second and Ronnie Olson, not happy with Chapman again, got into foul trouble in the semis and fouls out about 35 feet. from the cylinder in the region and they obviously need him to be in the game, I would see him commit a foul with 15 seconds left in the half, so far from the rim 12 seconds to shoot Grant, they certainly want to get it Well, Grant could be a good option here, six seconds they need a ball screen or some action up top trying to get it down to Grant Holstein. you have a lob opportunity here or something on the perimeter comes into law, they have to shoot and he doesn't get it in time, so Claremont senior commits a couple of fouls, a key one on Braden Chapman, but they don't.
Take a good look to finish the first half of the back-and-forth game. It's been Shady Spring leading by most Paramount up twice, but the Tigers lead by one at halftime. Shady Spring led foreigner H in that first quarter after a very hot start for Fairmont Seniors. I set up defensively in particular 21-20 Shady Spring up by one here at halftime in this class AAA game is everything we thought it was going to be, we thought it would be close, we thought it would come down to The Possession so far, the first half I'm not disappointed and I think both teams defensively have been very impressive both individually and as teams.
Yeah, you look at the star power in this one. You have to wonder those Ikea Dobbs, when are they going to try to dominate this game offensively? Yeah, so willing to pass and look for the open man and the Fairmont seniors have been so patient offensively that I think here, pretty early in the second half, you're going to have to ask Dobbs to try to get to the basket and look for his shot. . Yes, well, it was spectacular. For Fairmont senior, no surprise, the other big thing to watch out for here is when Braden Chapman, if Brayden Chapman commits that third foul, when he comes.
Yes, you are right because that second one was quite unnecessary near the middle of the field and it is fundamental for this team. They have talent all over the place but he's the one that makes it go he has to stay on the court here in the second half okay Fairmont senior got the best of Shady Spring when the buzzer sounded last year in the championship game that we are preparing. for another final photo in this Shady Spring up by one at halftime midway through the Class AAA championship game Shady Spring leads Fairmont Senior 21-20 just moments ago West Virginia High School Activities Commission along with Chick-fil-A they have started a new leadership scholarship this year in honor of Greg Reed which we will talk more about in a moment, but Bridgeport High School senior Quinn Damato is the scholarship winner this week for the boys and also had a 500 winner for the Quinn girls as a Bridgeport High School senior and two-year starter at center for the Bridgeport Indians football team, As I mentioned, Greg Reed passed away suddenly just a year ago couple of months as executive director, assistant executive director of the west virginia secondary school activities commission and the

wvssac

. has been honoring and playing this tournament in Greg's memory, our own Fred Persinger remembers Greg's life and the impact of him.
The average West Virginia high school sports fan may not know the name Greg Reed, but those who were a part of his life are Craig. The impact was immeasurable as read in his obituary. Greg was a passionate athlete, educator, coach, mentor and administrator. Greg ran often from the moment his father put a ball in his hands, he played every sport he could and became a multi-sport standout at Nicholas County High School. He graduated in 1983. He is a member of the school's Hall of Fame. A baseball scholarship brought him to Alderson brought us. He transferred to Glenville State and also changed sports becoming a member of the basketball team while graduating as a pioneer later in life also earned a master's degree from WVU after finishing college, he headed to East Hardy to become a teacher and coach.
He then returned to Nicholas County for more than a decade as a teacher and coached the Grizzlies women's basketball team, helping to transform the program six years later. since Grizzlies head coach Greg Reed joined the difficult task of rebuilding the women's basketball program when I took over their 13 straight losing seasons and we are fortunate to have had four winning seasons now and we believe that' We have changed this in five different sports at the high school level. Greg became assistant principal and athletic director at Martinsburg High School. He helped create the school's Hall of Fame and worked tirelessly to raise funds for the area's first grass field since 2016.
Greg served as assistant executive director of the ssac running state tournaments in football, basketball, tennis and baseball, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assist administrators, officials and coaches, and was known for answering phone calls at all hours. Sports were important to Greg, but his family meant the world to him survived by Greg's parents and siblings. He also leaves behind his wife Renee. The two were inseparable and Greg adored her. They made the most of their time together. Craig had a daughter, Megan, and a son, Austin, and also had two stepdaughters, Shannon. and Julia and her stepson Andrew all played sports throughout high school.
His grandson Jace, a fellow lefty, called him happy. Gig's fate was extremely important to him. He was a member of the South Parkersburg Baptist Church. Greg lived his faith daily and in every encounter. He had been a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Greg Reed's legacy lives on through the countless people he taught, mentored, coached and loved during his 57 years on Earth. Greg Reed, well done, good and faithful servant, tigers on top of each other, but Sean is good at doing what He can make Brad keep this game close, yes, he has been very good on both ends, but offensively he has 12 points and you see the hardness inside.
He has been able to publish, overcome contact, enhance himself for the laboratory, but we have also seen him appear outside. we can do it inside or outside we go out for Shady Spring it was Braden Chapman early, Maxwell took a little while to get going but when he did it was these three that started again talking about a guy who can go in or Outside, that's Maxwell, a versatile scorer for the Tigers, so 17 combined for Chapman and that's Braden and Maxwell in the first half of the 21, who step up to shadow here in the second half and help them offensively, but as you see , both teams throw the ball.
Pretty good, yes, and I would be interested in seeing it. I think we're going to have a shady defensive effort here to start the half, as you saw starting the game, try to come out and create a couple of those live turnovers. The turnovers that lead the points, as we saw at the end of the half, turnover points are also Shady plus five, nine to four, and in a game like this, every one of those you know, the little numbers add up and that's what's critical to them, that's how I like it playing that defensive pressure that forces those turnovers so far, I think Dave Retton could do it and you're only minus five in that category.
You're quite happy during the middle of the play, yes, certainly, Dave Retton, he looks happy, oh, there's a smile. Alright, ready to start. Shady Spring will have the ball. We will begin the third quarter of our final half of West Virginia State basketball. This season there are already three state champions crowned in West Virginia. It is Class AAA, West's next largest classification. Virginia behind Quantic Chapman turns well down the lane Cuts it to Maxwell hangs and scores for Maxwell to take it, which was great team defense as a Fairmont senior before they pulled Braden Chapman off about three screens, he just had nowhere to go go, although Maxwell with a good finishes Bob with the ball momentarily hands it off he recovers it he has two fouls he has his gardening Braden Chapman also has two fouls I will be one of the keys here to observe in the second half what we mentioned is that Dobbs only made a shooting In the first half he averages 21 points per game when the top of the key throws it back.
A good inside position on the Holstein lowered it around his waist and the Holstein will tie him up. Fairmont maintains possession. Excellent appearance, therefore, Dobbs, but if you are good. you just have to pick that ball up quick, there's just no time against their defense to bring it down or they're hounding you like you saw right there, all good, polar bears get to work, take it in the defensive zone. The Polar Bears have led twice in this game. but no more than two good points along the baseline that time Holstein came in good set little two man game there get Dobbs off the screen look good or take it yourself with the option there Cole Chapman throws it to the hands of Braden Chapel We're back to point guard Cole, the denial of the ball that time on defense by Andre Grant as they tried to return it to Braden Chapman Maxwell center of the court to Cole Chapman and an offensive foul that sank the shoulder and Gower takes over, good job. by Gower just flipping the screen gets into position keeps getting into position you see Cole with a little bit of a forearm shaking there to try to create some space, then the turnover gives the ball to the polar bears, the student Fairmont senior follows one Andre Grant scored Fairmont's first five points, now you're seeing Cole Chapman disconnect from Dobbs so early in the half they're throwing different bodies again, good finds, Dobbs' backdoor opens, crosses his arm, commits a Holstein foul, the veteran was moved there.
Dobbs, wasn't it like leaning back to where the contacts coming from the host see you step back to draw contact and take it at number two on Holstein Dobb's first trip to the free throw line and he struggled at the line during his career? 64 percent up and well he's a streaky guy on the line any night anyone can step up and score about 12 in a row as we talked at halftime we thought we'd see him come out and go for a shot who has here on a couple of these possessions one of two draws to score 23.
Chapman looking in the man has a mismatch, he has it in the low post against Williams goes forward Williams with that long reach blocks his shot towards Gower here it is Dobbs spinning whistle third foul on the knobs, that's big. Maxwell took the load with maybe a little extra selling on it, yes, more than extra, you see the spin move and there was contact, but great moment, Bob stays on the court here, traffic, three fouls still out. Maxwell has it there Dobbs has to be careful Maxwell knows that it is a very intelligent offensive possession there by Shady to go straight to Dobbs I think that is the attacker until further notice Grant lost the ball Cole Chapman Braden Chapman and the chaplains they give Shady a four-point lead and there's one of those live turnovers that leads directly to the points Ronnie Olson and Shady want to make.
Dave Brett will take the time. Shady isn't on a massive run, but in this game a 4-0 run is plenty. great for Shady Chapman to have done well watch Shady Spring meeting 4-0 run Braden Chapman leading that WVU Tech commitment committed in August to a coach to achieve great story in this game three fouls on Zacchaeus points what how effective can he be? He's on both ends if you look at Chapman's numbers, yes that's a big question and Chapman has been fantastic as we expected with 12 points, but on the other end, Dobbs' certified foul you saw how that impacted the game.
Immediately, Maxwell dove right in on the next possession. down Dodge couldn't really do much about it, gets a bucket, then the live turnover, little mini 4-0 run here for the Tigers, now he's on the bench, see how long Dave Retton keeps him there, probably depends on how Ebbs and The Flows go through this second half of the third quarter, a good four point lead and passes it to Andre Grant, see if Grant tries to start, he will take the ball from the basket if he does and draw a foul, a good shot there they were. playing too much to see the pick and roll with good Grant recognized that Maxwell playing too much took a step that way Grant just passed him for the layup and committed a second foul on cam mans like mans so that's his second uh Grant 59 percent on Line Fairmont senior as a team this season is not a great team in free throws their best starter is that young Dobbs who is on the bench with 1.3 rebounds he has 64 in the lot he gives 59 but we will see if he can score two here to buy the average Shady makes by a bucket had an early eight point lead that was gone quickly and it's been back and forth since Maxwell came out against Cole Chapman Ronnie Olson now has a chance to orchestrate his offense right in front of him Nicole Chapman along the sideline when the ball went out of bounds a little disjointed possession there for Ronnie Olson Shady you saw it halfway just say okay start over restart that thing go from the beginning old Chapman it take in the defensive zone send it Underneath, well, I had Maxwell posted.
Holstein was there too, but Cole Chapman threw it through his legs, it almost looked like Maxwell had taken his eye off him for a second. The ball escaped him. Six turnovers in Chapmanville. Here's Grant 27-25. The two man game was quite effective here with Grant and well, getting back to it right on the other side of the court, Grand High posts the favorite salad versus the good, both teams are very disciplined and delivered here offensively well, trapped in the corner , throw it in the bin. Holstein with the lead, but couldn't reach it, so the ball will go back to Fairmont senior big Jeff Jenkins.
He didn't want to have to charge on the last night of the shift against an overly athletic group that was there to the right. now Williams' ball knocked down all the passes and was tipped for the last time touching Jalil's law, so Shady will keep the ball. I will tell you Travis both ways there just aren't a lot of easy baskets in this game, there are hands everywhere defensively. Mans with quick hands to steal Chapman forward when touch out of bounds Man retains foul on tackle Latif Williams is tagged with his second foul that will put Jules Butler in the game for Fairmont senior Jaleel Law will come out and Dave Retton on talking to Zacchaeus Dobbs right now with just under three minutes left in the third quarter game still close, he probably can't leave it there for much longer.
I don't think the turnover is trying to leave it to cam mans and pick. from the court by Jules Butler, it's the second time in Shady Springs' last three possessions that he tried to knock the ball in and it led to a turnover. Both teams now came together offensively a bit. He's good against Holsey Corner, three good, there's Butler. Butler's work and that's just good for attention Maxwell had to dig on him left the law open Maxwell with no assistance Holstein couldn't finish he missed a couple on The Rim might have been surprised at how open he was there, he hasn't There have been a lot of clean looks like that throughout the game they close it in two minutes Grant misses a layup all the way Braden Chapman with the rebound Cole Chapman with a triple taken in the paint can't finish the ball knocked down by Grant commented on how hard the shots are We're coming up, we've seen three point-blank shots on The Rim, none of them downed Fairmont senior by one with the ball five out, so they served well on the perimeter now on this Gower across the lane, he got wide open in pair a nice Lane to take away too, here's Butler Blows By Man The Freshman, what a tape just created all that space with the five of them out there, did a tremendous job.
Good Butler putting it on the floor again, right to the basket, the biggest Fairmont. senior leads defending state champions by three Maxwell harassed by Grant and dribbles ball out of bounds, that's a big defensive comeback there Maxwell has the step Hits For him Grant returns tips refs said off Maxwell 27 seconds left I 'Sorry Trev, I commented in the three minutes, Mark, you might have to bring Dobbs in soon, but Dave Reddy, didn't he?' He's going to get three

full

minutes now that he can complete the fourth quarter with us, not only have they taken the lead.
They have extended the lead here, Dobbs has come out of the game and Dobbs has taken a shot in the game. Alright, at 27 seconds, it's not a subsidy. He's a Fairmont senior trying to take a worst-case scenario with a three-point lead in the quarter. great fourth Chapman has to be careful he has two fouls he throws the ball but it goes straight to Andre Grant 10 seconds now defended by Cole Chapel Fairmont a little confused Galler throws it under the two good one Gower good if it comes out no Fairmont stays Shady no was able to get a final shot, but they can't extend the lead, so we head into the final quarter of the game.
The Polar Bears have taken the lead and are heading to the championship. Thanks, well how about a Fairmont senior ninth grader averaging four points? a game and hello Jules Butler, he was big there in that quarter, spot up three ready to catch and shoot and then the shot to go, so Five Points in the game Two Big Shots right there to extend this lead to three for the followers I looked at Butler, he will stay on the court and Fairmont senior will also put back their leading scorer of the season, Zacchaeus Dobbs, now is the time to win for one of these two teams, there is no brake in the fourth quarter of action.
Shady needs a bucket. Maxwell. down the lane turns, there's going to be a whistle oh there's just no room to operate inside for either team first foul on the good Maxwell is working hard to get in there turning reaches up maintains contact for good Maxwell on the line has 0 -2, that's 11 points I got it Ronnie Olson look I know he coached in a state championship but he played in one in2000 with Independence High School, okay, one point game and look at this matchup now Brayden Chapman and Dobbs Butler Gallery on top, bummer, super fast, couldn't connect.
Chapman Maxwell steps on the gas kicks it Braden Chapman Shady leads Dobbs cut in trouble here's Williams takes it hit by Holstein will throw it good recovery defense there by Shady Spring I thought Dobbs had the pace and was going to go all the way to the room , the ball fakes a three-point lead for the Shady Spring Tigers and a drive and we can have a whistle and a hook foul called for a good big defensive possession for Holstein, first of all, about how far he pushed well. the three point line on the other end huge basket by Brady Chapman to give the Tigers the lead before he had to start that possession Holstein to the end yes he just raised his elbow around his head on the turn 6 33 to play fourth quarter back and forth going Shady up by two going all the way two teams tied Shady Spring up by two and Brad could we repeat last year's state championship game?
These same teams almost this same kid there is Braden Chapman Gabe. Shady takes the lead but Fairmont senior comes back and Dobbs takes over, yeah what a great play on both ends. A tremendous shot by Braden Chapman nine times out of ten wins you the state title. Fairmont senior doesn't panic and comes back the other way. My favorite part of that is Dobbs in the win with the give me the ball, give me the ball, I want this, I'm going to make the shot and then I'm going to finish it to claim the state championship and keep in mind Dobbs in that moment. was the 10th grader he wanted it at the time and he delivered and that's why if you're in the bleak

spring

you're nervous you know Dobbs hasn't been a factor offensively yet in this game you know he's coming and a lot of that is Braden's defense.
Chapman is right, he's been locked in and I give Dobbs credit for not forcing things; he's been content to keep his teammates involved and keep Fairmont Senior in it with a chance to win it late. Reagan Chapman has been involved and scores time and time again, that was Dobbs. I couldn't do anything with him with those three fouls. A four point lead for Shady again I can't say it enough. Dobbs has made one shot and is averaging 21 points per game. Mercedes did a very good job here in the second half. Watch him get the ball with a little clearance trying to make something happen near the left lane another good defensive position right there by Holstein have him give up the dribble here he goes Dobbs through the paint finds a good cut good little step three yeah, it's beautiful Holstein thought he had it and well, with that quick move back to the basket, Braden Chapman took over and that's one of those plays.
That Shady just kills teams, but you haven't seen a latte. The Fairmont seniors did a great job coming back, so first, a great spin move from Good to get the bucket, but then Shady won't let you relax and they come back at

speed. brain Chapman no, you're right, you saw the shadow of the ball right there Blowing by the polar bear Defenders Chapman hits the and a Shady up by five midway through the fourth quarter five point lead for Shady Spring 37-32 and Brad you love it Seeing seniors with the will to win at the end of ball games, well, you're right and Braden Chapman is just like, "Okay, listen.
I have six minutes left in my high school career. I'll do it." charge of this, so there's really Good's big move." Clever Petty plays to get the cube, but then Shady pushes him away. Cole Chapman looks for his brother Braden, who receives him and immediately attacks the rim. I think if you're Ronnie Olson, that play exemplifies Shady Spring basketball, yeah, great swing. Fairmont was feeling good when that lead went back to two and then all of a sudden it went back to five and now, if you're a Fairmont senior, this has to be a combination of Grant Dobbs and well, here's that little two-man game in the top. it's worked, but you have to see if you can get the Zeus knobs in the basket with a good exit, two big Williams jower ice creams instead of three, we will get a foul for holding the ball that is underneath, I think that will go to the camera.
Mans, that's his third foul of four teams, fourth team foul on Shady, since I mentioned Fairmont senior with five, so both teams are still one foul within two of the Butler bonus by three and the freshman does it does again. Wow, give me the ball on the big stage, he says. Great Butler dish there by Dobbs, had a mismatch on Holstein, thought he could drive to the basket, stopped on an open jump shot, you know, fourth assist of the game for his Ikea dolls, there's Brayden Chapman, that he is going to be held and receive a foul. and marking the shot, we'll see who they call, that will be on Dobbs and that is personal foul number four.
Chapman gets here, splits up. The defenders, yeah, Dobbs went in there and just put him through the arm. 16 fouls, so his shots from Here on for the Tigers free throw Chapman misses the Tigers five of eight from the line Chapman saves one of two makes it a two-possession game for a possession game Butler hit all three on the other end to reduce the game to two, so let's go back to three bubbles pretty much in half here in the fourth quarter they have to get out of it quicker now if you're cloudy. Dobbs throws it. Butler didn't like the way he took him out, he thought they had Dobbs there on the overplay of the coming men. to the basket he just couldn't finish Maxwell keep in mind that he has fouls to give so they can be very aggressive here within reach Gower almost crowded and his defensive pressure Travis, they just force you to get so far from the basket to start the offense . great beautiful pass from Dobbs right on the button to well, how did he see that we had the same angle as him and you couldn't see well inside, right there, we'll throw that one in.
I think they played a few games together. let's say a point game Chapman skips it here's three Maxwell aren't good chips Manns John's has it, the polar bears could take the lead Gower wants a big three and there's Fairmont senior again, that's been the story of the entire game just when you think Shady has the game is under control Here comes Fairmont senior now back in the lead down five to two Fairmont four of its last four from the court Chapman turns, misses, recovers it comes back up in and out no good a third time up this time it's blocked wow so now the Polar Bears play with the leader Dobbs rebounds a good layup for Grant great defensive play by Dobbs on the other end to block Chapman and then the excellent penetration and Dish's four-point game and a timeout taken by Shady 2 21 left in the fourth quarter and Dave Breton, you know Connor Gower just got you a big three a couple possessions ago, but you know Tourette's not happy with something to the defense, there is a big penetration at the end with Holstein approaching in a hurry. tremendous credit to Fairmont senior Travis, it feels like three or four times they've been out of this game and Shady was about to retire, they keep coming and coming and coming and as you mentioned repeatedly all night , doing this. while Dobbs with just one point on the night just incredible but six assists so tonight Dobbs in that facilitator role and it's worked you know guys like Butler and Gower have hit some huge shots here in the second half those two guys have combined for three triples.
Good has been consistent throughout the game. Grant knows he goes back and forth offensively enough to give the Polar Bears the advantage and Dobbs knows where to find his guys on the perimeter. We'll give Dobbs credit for having a night in this game when he's the leader. scorer that can be a frustrating night, you have a missed shot, but he hasn't forced anything tonight, he's been content to find his guys, distribute the ball and help his team in other ways, that's a great offensive possession from Shady Spring right here. they must score with 2 15 left try to break up the family Run Mann is going to throw it in Maxwell against Dobbs missed it good rebound Grant takes it to Dobbs two minutes to play again Shady only four team fouls so they can be and have to be ultra aggressive right here, it won't do you any harm Maxwell picks up the foul, there will be his second 15 fouls again Shady 145, when do you start fouling and doing it with purpose?
Here's Dobbs, they fouled him, that's foul number 16 on Chapman. and Dave Retton actually orchestrated that right there the ball is thrown in the defensive zone to Dobbs and you saw Dave Rhett and said, "Wait, wait and finally gave the go-ahead to Doc, taking advantage of every available second they can." I read like chess pieces to catch them. exactly where he wants them. Grant takes the ball and now, if you're shadowed, you don't have to foul and turn it over. Time is of the essence. You have to attack the rim quickly. Chapman foul. Dobbs is gone, there will be no. a repeat of last year's heroics by Zacchaeus Dobbs C is eliminated at 128 to make well the smart plays that would be expected from Braden Chapman there with the turnover he sees that Dobbs is on him he goes straight to the basket he tries to lean and generate contact right there to see if they can take Dobbs out of the game, which is exactly what happened and Jobs is trying to get out of the way and there wasn't much contact, he fouled out with one point and six assists.
Chapman, you need them, he's the first one, I realize it's obvious, but again it's a big loss, not from a scoring standpoint, but to have his veteran ball-handling presence and outside distribution ability. of the field here in the last minute, that's important. Chapman misses the second triple. game Grant pulls the rebound not to mention Dobbs is also your best free throw shooter for your Fairmont 117 senior to play Butler chased by a foul by cam mans they will be one on one so they will foul The student Freshman Jules Butler is 73 percent, making Dobbs his best free throw shooter of the starters.
Butler will be on the line, although limited opportunities this season cam mans commit his fourth personal foul. Butler needs this one to make it a two-possession game first. blood pressure problem don't just give me the ball go out and take a shot how was the game you had? Would you believe it's only his twelfth? a thirteenth free throw of the season. It seemed like it was his 1300 of him, intensified his excellent form. finishes big two free throws up, very good Shady finds a bucket to hurt Chapel spinner puts it against Williams places it in the left hand Holstein his first field goal of the game in the lead reduces it to a three-point game with 104 and a timeout Tip from Shady Big Time from Holstein first of all great defense from Williams right there making things difficult for Chapman it's Holstein just reaching out and getting the touch mcbuck tremendous defense from Williams uh 104 on the left so Shady has another chance and you know, Brad with a minute four you have a lot of time, you can defend a little bit in the Ford Fairmont senior defensive zone to cross the timeline at least before committing the foul, yes, you will certainly see that the increased pressure here I would expect a bit of cheating too, see if you can throw a ball to the middle of the floor where you can jump in those hallways do your last year at Fairmont, conversely, what are you trying to do to keep everything in the middle of the floor? as possible to avoid that pressure that you know is coming timeouts both teams with two left the Arrow by the way, which could be a big factor here he is in favor of Fairmont senior Gower can run the baseline and puts it towards Butler in the corner against Maxwell Shady, you want him to give up, they do.
Gallery takes it now, look how quick Shady fouls. Now Cole Chapman is going to foul us, so Connor Gower, 46th free throw shooter this season. Gower is 6-13 in strike one and one Claremont gets everyone out of the lane Gallo makes two possessions game 51.9 four point lead like you said, you have time but you have to go fast and try to get to the rim if you are cloudy, it's going to be all Chapman and he's going to foul Williams two shots for Braden Chapman my shadow is in the seven of eleven from the line Chapman hits 41 seconds to get back to a one possession game, so the last possession is very easy to escape for Butler from that corner I wonder if Shady changes that and brings a trap here do you want them to take some time here on the board Chapman misses the second and we'll hear a whistle we're going to have a Fowler tie or timeout timeout Yeah, They are going to give the timeout to Fairmont senior so the polar bears can also keep the arrow, but 37.7, this game looks a lot different than the regular season when he faced Brad in Shady Spring, it was all Fairmont senior but all murky in home. winning by 20 points, yes they got away with it, but certainly a different story tonight on this stagein the rematch of the title game again.
Just give Fairmont senior credit in this case for going around winning that game early in the season, turning it around tonight and doing a tremendous job of being in this game with the lead at the end without Zacchaeus Knob scoring well. 20 point win for Shady Spring, but we knew no one was going to win by 20 in this one. Let's think about the defensive effort, although you saw the score on the last shot. Shady points only 42 tonight, some of that has been a great defensive effort by the Fairmont senior and some of that has simply been the incredible offensive patience of the Polar Bears willing to take advantage of 30 40 per minute of that clock on every possession which has been the key Brad you look at the shooting percentages, both teams shot the ball pretty well for the championship game, 53 percent for Fairmont senior, obviously, that's good, 47 percent for Shady, but the shots have been limited, only 62 shots combined in this game, there you see that the score of the last quarter equals the Tigers.
I need a fumble three and the trap comes and there's a fumble Butler fumbles it and there it is in the corner Holstein comes from behind but the trap doesn't even get there Chapman with his hand there the referees say off Butler, yeah that was clean, okay, so the Tigers, do you take the three here? Brad. I think if you look closely, you have enough good shooters, they will most likely try to take Chapman to the rim again, but if you get a three, I wouldn't be afraid to take Cole Chapman Braden Chapman, there's the three for the tie.
No strong rebound was detected by Butler. He passed it to her. Butler couldn't catch him, so now, with 19.8 Shady, I have a chance to think about that again quickly. also Matt, now I think you're looking for three, you have to get a Maxwell or Chapman open here for free, we're running out of time, okay, Ronnie Olson is going to take his second to last time here to talk about it. I'm going with one, well the rest of AAA may not agree, but I will retake this match every year. This has been to contact the backlink of the classic Championship Games, both teams and competitors play this game on contact, physicality and offense. defense, you have everything tonight, okay, we'll tell you there's 19.8 seconds left.
Both teams have a timeout. Fairmont senior still has the arrow. Shady, if they go for three to try to tie, it's four of 11 for Beyond The Arc. in this game and Braden Chapman is three for five, now I'm telling you the other guy to keep an eye on if you're a Fairmont senior is Cam Mans, he's a great three point shooter, he hasn't been able to hit it tonight. Limited opportunities, oh, two dances. number 24. here Chapman comes off the screen, he wasn't there, so the secondary option Maxwell trying to get to the rim fails well, Fairmont has it ahead of Gallup five seconds Gower to the rim layup well Fairmont senior is going to do it It's a brave performance by the Fairmont Senior Polar Bears, Sean Good is cramping in the corner, what a game Travis, what a brave effort by Fairmont Senior to come here and do it on a night where their leading scorer scores one.
Cue the Polar Bears, a Fairmont senior head coach Dave Redden wins the ninth state championship in school history as the defending state champions do it again. Foreigner Shady Spring had some opportunities here down the stretch, let's take a look at the final sequence. Again Brad. got some right looks, I mean, Shady got some looks that they wanted right there, again, that defense that's been there all night for Fairmont senior, making things difficult. Max Welder had the appearance of that contact before deflecting it far enough. Fairmont senior's defense does. once again last year it was Zacchaeus Dobbs with a buzzer this year it's Connor Gower not with a buzzer with some safety The polar bears win this game by five 47-42 we will visit Dave Retton when we return to Charleston Fairmont, one time senior state champions more Fairmont senior wins by five 47-42 the polar bears state champions Once again Brad Howells with Dave Raton well first of all congratulations here we are again we meet every year here on the sidelines what a tremendous brave effort what is this bad man is huge, it's huge for our kids because, you know, we went to Shady, they put it on us there, they put it on us and you know what we responded, we responded to the doorbell today, what was the difference, so how did that turn happen that you allowed? 86 points down there in that game today you keep them at 42.
The defense was tremendous, but what control of the ball we wanted to control the game defensively with our offense and we also wanted to control the game defensively and that affected our offense, yeah , and we did it. great job outside of a few rebounds hey shady is a blue collar team and I want to say out of respect to Ronnie and his players they crashed the boards extremely hard uh we did a super job on the boards super job on the boards tonight. There are so many different guys that we could talk about for a long time, but Zacchaeus Dobbs, your leading scorer, he made a shot tonight, but other guys took a good step in the first half, how about Butler in the second half, how tremendous Freshman effort from all your guys tonight?
I'm just smiling from ear to ear. I'm very happy. I'm very proud of our boys. I'm very proud that they executed and did the job well. Congratulations, it's consecutive years of classic games. A tremendous effort. Go celebrate with the team. Thank you. Congratulations, thank you very much Brad, okay, that's Dave Retton and our Brad Howe, another state championship for the Fairmont Polar Bears, senior player of the game presented by the West Virginia Coal Association of friends of coal committed to clean energy , your work and a better quality of life for all West Virginians. It's DeSean, well, 18 points, eight rebounds, eight of ten from the floor.
He was the guy, you know, you talk about the young guys, but he was there for four quarters, he was there all night and he was really good. in the first half and keeping Fairmont senior in close contact, he was great, he came in, he went outside with the toughness that he showed inside and fighting, he was tremendous tonight, don't you just love this game? If I told you before the game, Dobbs has one. shot a point, who beats the champion, I would have said there was no shot, Fairmont senior does it and they just fought all night and over again while we were talking to the coach about several guys who stepped up throughout the game really early and then the young Butlers at the end were fantastic, yes, Butler. a big 5-0 run as Shady Spring took a 5-point lead that was part of a big 7-0 run late in the game for the Fairmont senior Polar Bears and they made it 27-1 again on the season they avenged that regular season loss to Shady Spring the Tigers finish with a tremendous 23 and four records lose their first game in class here tonight in the state championship game against the polar bears two years in a row break Shady's heart Another instant classic Congratulations to both teams, it was a lot of fun for Brad Howe.
I'm Travis Jones. Congratulations to the class AAA state champions. The Fairmont Senior High School Polar Bears tonight for Charleston. Thank you.
