I just want to warn you now. Men, go ahead and start getting your poems ready, your flowers ready, don't wake up on Valentine's Day and say, "I forgot. I just told you." It's February, but I'm really glad to be here instead of Brother David, since he's sailing the high seas on the Crossgates cruise, but I get to hang out with some of my favorite people, so let's have a good time. time and let's study the word of God together, if you have your Bible, you can go ahead and turn to chapter nine of First Samuel and I'm just going to put a full disclaimer, we're reading that entire chapter, okay, it's 28 verses, but it's a great story.
10 30 am wednesday morning worship
It reads so smoothly that there is a message there for us all to be encouraged as we live our daily lives, but I have titled today's message nameless servants and I don't know if they have ever done that. We notice it in the course of reading the Bible and reading the word of God year after year, but there are many servants in the Bible that we don't even know their name, but they play an integral role in advancing the kingdom of God and that's nothing. different from the first chapter nine of Samuel and I really enjoyed studying this chapter because it gives us kind of a peek through the window through how God works in and through the random details of life that we don't really expect sometimes, as if Have you ever put your head on a pillow at night and been like a man?
I woke up this morning and I had no idea I was going to deal with it today you know what I'm saying, that's what I'm talking about because as we read this chapter and you'll see what I'm talking about when we read it. We have this balance of God achieving and advancing with His fixed purposes in life while simultaneously doing and acting as free human beings, well for example, you know, we read in first Samuel. Saul eventually becomes king in the first Samuel, that is God's fixed purpose, but how that happens is within the framework of people doing and acting freely and really the message is no different than yours and mine, but before of us. read the main passage, there is actually a verse in Proverbs 16 9 that I hope can illustrate what I'm talking about, but in Proverbs 16 9 it says that the heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps, the heart of the man.
He plans his path but the Lord establishes himself and in other words, you can plan your life, you can plan your day, you can have your routines established throughout your life, but at the end of the day, the Lord will finally establish your steps in your life. life and I'll give you a great example of this, last Monday, something random happened to me and it was great. How it ended up being, but I'm a creature of habit, okay, you can ask my wife. A creature of habit I do things systematically My Mondays are exactly the same Every Monday You can be sure that Ben is doing the same thing he did the previous Monday and that he will do the same thing again the following Monday.
Normally I get up approximately 6 6 30 the time my son lets us sleep and the first part of my day the first 30 minutes to an hour of the day I like to play with him I like to lie down on the floor drink coffee and play with my son then do That, get ready for work, spend the first hour of my day with the Lord and then I get to work, okay, it's Monday time and Monday is my office day, usually all I do that day is respond to online prayer requests from the previous Sunday. and then I try to contact our first time guest and the people who visited our church that day just to make sure they have everything they need as they continue to visit Crossgates.
Well, last Monday I was doing all the things you know I was. Great, and then the receptionist calls my phone in my office and it rings for a ring and a half, so I pick it up and there's no one there and I'm like, "Oh, she dialed the wrong extension, well, then I get a text At the minute". later from her and says hey your neighbor is here at the front desk and I was like my neighbor and I was thinking because we just finished our foundation membership class and we actually had some of our neighbors in the same dead end .
They were enjoying church and that was great and I was like, but they're up here, so I'm walking through the Labyrinth of our church offices to get to the front and all this time I'm racking my brain. which neighbor is here to see me and then I get to the front desk and sure enough, the neighbors who live literally right next to us, the guy who lives there, he was there and he was like, Hey man, I'm up here and I thought, I remembered something. about you saying you worked here and I just need a little help and it wasn't many words after that this guy just broke down and they were in a tough place in his life, he was between jobs.
He needed some financial help, but we talked for 45 minutes going over some things because he thought he was a failure as a husband. Failure as a father was ruining everything and not living up to the man he promised the wife he wanted. ser and I looked at him and I said look man, I don't know why you came here today, but I said my wife and I want to help you and it would be an honor for us to help you and if so It's okay with you, when I get off work, my wife and I will go right to your house and we will talk, so I will pause there and we will talk and we will continue with what I have for us today, but but that random thing on my Monday morning, which is not me planning my day, is the Lord laying down my steps, it makes sense, which is why in 1 Samuel 9 we are here with this story that begins where we see a man named Kick sending his son Saul.
Who is the future king of Israel? He went out to look for the family donkeys that got loose. So let's read these verses and be patient, but it's a great story. You'll love it. He says there was a man of Benjamin whose name was. Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zoror, the son of Becharath, the son of Apiah, a Benjaminite, a rich man, and he had a son named Saul, a handsome young man. There was no man among the people of Israel more handsome than him, for his shoulders were taller than him. any of the people now Kish Saul's father's donkeys were lost so Kish said to Saul his son, take one of the young men with you and get up, go and look for the donkeys and he passed over the hill. country of Ephraim and he passed through the land of shalisha but he did not find them and they passed through the land of shalim but they were not there when they passed through the land of Benjamin but he did not find them when they came to the land of zoof child some of these names these are some good names when they come to the land of zoof Saul said to his servant who was with him come, let us return home lest my father stop worrying about the donkeys and worry about us but he said to him, here is a man of God in this city and he is a man who is held in honor everything he says is fulfilled so now let's go there maybe he can tell us the way we should go so Saul said to his servant but if we go, what can we take him to the man?
Because the bread in our sacks is gone and there is no gift to bring to the man of God, what do we have?, answered the servant Saul again, here I have with me a quarter of a shekel of silver and I will give it to the man of God. God to tell us our way anciently in Israel when a man went to consult God he said come, let's go to the Seer because today's Prophet was formally called a seer and Saul said to his servant well said come let's go so they went to the city where the man of God was and they went up the hill to the city they met some young women who were going out to draw water and they said to them this is the seer here they answered he is here he is right in front of you, hurry up, he has just arrived at the city because the people have a sacrifice today in the high place, as soon as you enter the city, you will find it before it goes up to the high place to eat, because the people will not do it. eat until he comes since he must bless the sacrifice then those who are invited will eat now because you will find him immediately then they went up to the city and as they entered the city they saw Samuel leaving towards them on their way. to the high place and now in verse 15 the story stops and now we begin to see the story through the eyes of Samuel, so verses 1 to 15 are this story through the eyes of Saul and now we are looking at the rest of the chapter .
This story unfolds from Samuel's eyes as if they were two different perspectives, so in verse 15 it says that the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin and you. I will anoint him forPrince over my people Israel he will save my people from the hand of the Philistines because I have seen my people because their cry has reached me when Samuel saw Saul the Lord said to him here is the man I spoke to you about is the one who will restrain to my people then Saul approached Samuel at the gate and said, tell me where the seer's house is Samuel replied Saul, I am the seer, go up ahead of me to the high place because today you will eat with me and in the morning I will let you go and I will tell you Everything that you have in mind regarding your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not pay attention to them because they have been found and for whom everything desirable in Israel is, is it not for you and your father's house?
Saul answered, am I not a Benjaminite of the smallest of the tribes? of Israel and my clan is not the most humble of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin, why then have you spoken to me in this way? Then Samuel took Saul and his young woman and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head. Of those who had been invited, there were about 30 people and Samuel told the cook, bring the portion that I gave you, of which I told you to leave it aside, so the cook took the leg and what was in it and put them in front of them. of Saul and Samuel said: look what was saved is placed before eating because it was saved for you.
Until the appointed time so that you could eat with the guest, then Saul ate with Samuel that day and when they came down from the high place to the city, there was a bed. He spread out for Saul on the roof and lay down to sleep, then at dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof to send you on your way, so Saul got up and he and Samuel went out into the street as they were. Going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, tell the servant to pass in front of us and when he passes by yourself, stop here for a while so that I can make the word of God known to you.
Then in verse 1 there is a new transition that is taking place, we are coming out of the transition of the judges and we are entering a transition where Israel is getting their first king, they are literally getting what they asked for, they wanted a king that looked like the rest of the territories around. them and then what does God do? He names them a man named Saul and, ironically, do you know what Saul means by request? So God gave Israel exactly what they asked for because Saul's name means Request. Hey, I thought that was kind of cool. but what's even cooler about this passage is that while Kish was sending Saul after the donkeys, God was sending Saul after Samuel throughout this beautiful chapter in verse 9.
And the more I thought about it and how, in In terms of my experience, I explained to you last Monday when my neighbor came to church, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this kind of thing happened to me and, in a sense, to my position, while God I sent my neighbor after something. help for his family God was sending Ben's neighbor to Ben and that's what I mean by Proverbs 16 9 about how a man's heart plans his path but the Lord establishes his steps and this all happens in the random details of the routine of our lives. life that walks and lives every day there is no gigantic banner in the sky you know they have flown across the coast you know when you are down there it says Seafood plate 25.99 is nothing like that you know there are no rays that fall and fall to your feet and be like this, I'm the one who sets you up, no, it's about random details of life.
I mean, the first king of Israel met the Prophet of God because a bunch of donkeys got loose. I mean, think about that for a minute, so I get to verse five through seven, okay, and it says this says that when they came to the land of zoof, okay, so they came to the land of zoof after going from town to town. . Saul said to a servant who was with him, come, let's go back. lest my father stop worrying about the donkeys and get anxious about us, so they've been gone all this time and Saul says okay, we have to stop, we're just going to cut ties with the donkeys because at this point my dad I know my dad well enough that at this moment he is more worried about our lives than about the donkeys and is probably at home living with anxiety wondering if his son and his servant are still alive, so the immediate reaction of Saul is let's go home, but then in the middle of that, you're presented with the glue of this story and that's the nameless servant who goes donkey hunting with Saul, he's right there where he says he says um, let's go back. so my father wouldn't stop worrying about the donkeys and he got anxious about us and the servant was there saying, well, wait a minute, we're here in this land of zoof and zoof was actually Samuel's great-great-grandfather and he's like if we were in this zoof land and I have I heard that there is a seer here that there is a prophet here and maybe if he is still here he could help us and maybe tell us where the donkeys are and then the servant convinces Saul to continue and so we present. to the glue of this story because the servant is an important actor here Saul wanted to return the servant said no Saul said I have nothing to give this prophet the servant says well I have half a shekel of silver to give him, so let's move on and then Saul said, "Okay, then leave it at that," but what's so crazy is that the servant seems to have more knowledge of what's going on than Saul, which I think is also a little glimpse into the future of what life will be like. of Saul.
Ultimately, kingship will be when he officially begins his journey as king of Israel, a very unprepared and reactive King rather than a prepared and proactive King, and we are already seeing those glimpses right now when the servant has to convince Saul. So we are in the land we need to be if we have any hope of finding these donkeys, so the servant kept Saul on task, thus keeping God's plan on task, that is how God uses us. the everyday details of life and I have this written down that I want you to always remember it's never about the name it's never about the title it's never about any level of reputation it's about the task we were given that servant was given a task go look for the donkeys and he wasn't going to return to Kish until they found them and that's what makes him literally the glue in this story.
You know, Stacy and I have a table that a friend of mine and I built from scratch. I took the wood out of a house, I put it all together, it's a beautiful table, um, but in the middle of that table there are a lot of bottles of wood glue, now when someone sees that table, no, no, no, no, like Oh. Let me see the wood glue, you know that would be strange, but the amazing thing about that table is that you look at that table and how beautiful it is and you don't think about the wood glue, but there was wood glue. between those planks of wood that hold that table together and that's what nameless servants that's what servants do in the advancement of God's kingdom they are the glue that holds together God's tasks now Is God that we We potentially say that we can ruin God's plans, right? that is God saying I want you to be part of what I am doing and from now on the servant gives us an example of what it means to be the glue and be part of the advancement of the kingdom of God.
It is never about the name or the title but about the task that is actually assigned to us in Titus in Titus, the opening verse of Titus and it happens in several places in Paul's letters, Paul refers to himself as a servant, he is Well, but when Paul refers to himself as a servant and an apostle, he is actually using the Greek words and what that Greek word means is a word that describes a galley slave and what a galley slave is is a slave who is rowing on the lowest level of a slave ship and so Paul essentially says I am a I am a slave. rowing on the lower deck of a slave ship for our Lord Jesus Christ and I believe that is the same stance you and I should take as we live our lives glorifying Jesus Christ.
People should consider you and me as galleys of Jesus Christ. If necessary we will go down to the bottom of the bottom of the bottom for a soul and we would do it with joy, we would row on that lower level and we would go as long and as hard as necessary until this point the person that God has put in my life gets to know who he is. Jesus Christ why because at the same time Paul refers to the Believers as stewards well he is a steward well if you look for what a steward is a steward is not the owner but is the one who looks at the Master's treasure the steward did not earn it the student I mean, the steward did not own it, the steward did not create it but he is responsible for taking care of it and that is why I wrote the task that was assigned to us is much more important than any name or title we may have because the Master's treasure is his people and the teacher wants to draw those people to himself and that is us playing our part in the advancement of the Gospel.
I don't know about you, but I'm sure you have played a role in someone's life on their journey to knowing Jesus Christ and I think you would agree with me when I make this statement that there is no better feeling on this Earth than when you know that God is using you at a time when there is no greater feeling than when I was having that conversation with my neighbor. I couldn't wait for him to finish telling me about the things that are going on in his life so I could say that my wife and I would be honored to help him.
It is an honor to be able to help you and as soon as it comes out we will be at your house to help you like you feel beyond blessed and they are the ones in need but that also lines up with scripture in fact yesterday in our staff prayer , the uh, the verse that was presented to us so that we could pray right above our church, look at what Paul says in First Corinthians 9, it says that although I am free from everything, I have become a servant to all that I may win. more of them for the Jews I became a Jew to gain Jews for those under the law.
I became one under the law, although not being under the law myself, that I might win those who were under the law for those who were outside the law. one outside the law not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ to win the weak those who are outside the law I became weak to gain the week I have become all things to all so that for all means could save some, I do it for the sake of the Gospel so I can share its blessing with them, so there is no better feeling than when God has called you to a moment and you know without a doubt that God's hand is in this moment and at that moment we must surrender and say: I will do what I have to do, I will do what it takes to advance the task of God because he called me to this moment, so look, now we come to verse 15. and as I mentioned , it stops from Saul's perspective and then when we stop here from Saul's perspective, we're going to look at it from Samuel's perspective, okay, and in verse 15 it takes us back to the previous day and God tells Samuel everything that is going to happen. says now the day before Saul came, the Lord revealed to Samuel tomorrow at this time I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin and you will anoint him to be Prince over my people Israel, he will save my people from the hand . of the Philistines because I have seen my people because their cry has reached me two things really there is one thing there that I really love is that in the midst of Israel rebelling against God wanting a man king we see God still being a covenant God making reference to your stubborn people like my people steal, they are stubborn and I am going to give them what they ask for, but they are still my people and they continue to suffer, so Samuel, you are going to leave. and he looks and when you come out you're going to see this tall guy and this tall guy is going to be handsome but he's going to think that he's stupid because he's wandering around this town looking for some donkeys that got loose.
Whether it's Samuel or not, that's your man, that's your man, that you're going to anoint king of Israel, so you can imagine what Samuel is thinking and then you can imagine what Saul is thinking when Samuel comes up to him and says: "Hey, me." I have been waiting for you, in fact, you no longer need to worry about your father's donkeys because they have been found, we have more important things to talk about and then in verse 22 it says that Samuel took Saul and his young man and brought them to the room and gave them a place in front of those who had been invited, which were about 30 people, so that they would remember the part where Saul goes and his servant goes to the well and there are the ladies at the well who are sitting there. saying that if you hurry you will catch Samuel because they are preparing a big dinner in the high place like they don't even know but they were talking to the guest of honor there and then Saul is taken to the high place for this. for this party and he keeps saying in Samuel told the cook bring the portion that I gave you that I told you to set aside which makes it seem to me that what he ate was different from what the other 30 people ate and it's almost like Samuel in his own way he is saying the food that I put is different from this man this is the king this is the king of Israel so Samuel says go and bring the portion that I gave you of which I told you to leave it aside Then the The cook took the leg and what was on it and put them in front of Saul and Samuel said look at what is kept before eating because it was kept for you until the hour.designated so that you could eat with the guest, then Saul ate with Samuel who Can you imagine Saul at this point?
Because just a second ago he said: Are you sure you have the right person? Don't you realize that I am from the land of Benjamin? I am a Benjamin. I am the lowest of the. low like are you sure you have the right person? I mean, I can imagine his jaw dropping to the floor when he walks into this dinner and then Samuel says, "um to the servant, hey, remember that the part I was telling you about this is for him, go." I understand that I can't imagine what Saul was like. I was out looking for my dad's donkeys and now this guy, Samuel, is telling me that this is all within a planned hour, what is happening, but Samuel brings it up and then simultaneously reminds us of that verse in Proverbs the heart of a man traces their path but the Lord establishes their steps and then at the end of the story in verse 27 it says as they went down to the outskirts of the city said Samuel to Saul tell the servant to pass before us tell him to just have a little head start tell the servant to pass before us and when he passes, stop here for a while so that I can make known to you the word of God and at the end of that story you see the call that God made to Samuel to anoint the king of Israel and then you see the call of God being there also anointing the first king of Israel and all this happened because some donkeys got off and all All this happened because an anonymous servant that we don't know kept Saul focused when he was ready to return home.
All of this happened on a normal day and look what God did in a span of three days of what we would call normal days going back to my neighbor's story that Monday last Monday that random meeting I had with my neighbor that was a conversation of About 45 minutes allowed Stacy and I to stand in his living room and tell him why we are helping him. because we love Jesus and Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves but also to bear each other's burdens and that's what we have to do. I remember when we finished that conversation I called my wife and my first statement was that we can go tell our neighbors about why we love Jesus and I remember hanging my head at night saying I'll tell you what when I started my Monday I would never have thought that That my Monday would have ended in the living room of my neighbor's house, for me it is the most random thing that could have happened but for God it was an appointed hour for my neighbors and that is how God works, the heart of man plans his path but the Lord establishes himself and that's why you and I have so many moments that we can man as we go down the road and we look back in the rearview mirror, we can see the man, God moved, the hand of God was on all of that, that took all of that right now, because that's how God works.
What's funny about our conversation when We were there talking and we were able to help them a little financially. I just made the comment to my neighbor. I told him man, if you ever need someone to talk to, you can talk to me, I'll give you my phone number. number and he looked at me holding back tears saying no one has ever told me how many times have you told someone that it is like our common language? Hey man if you need anything let me know, hey if you need something to talk about. I'm here, you can talk to me, I said that commonly, hey man, look, I just want you to know that if you need someone to talk to, let me know and he just stopped and said no one has ever told me that before and like that we're off.
Monday to Saturday and I'm at the gym and I get a text from my neighbor so long that there are more words in this text than we've ever talked about as humans, but he texts me so long and in that text message he said, of course, thanks for everything. I can't even believe this is happening, but he gave me a long list of things to pray about to pray for his family because he doesn't want to leave his family because of this. a lot of time because he's going to work on a boat on the high seas, you know he's going to work with unbelievers and they don't believe in Jesus, they think praying on the boat is like a superstition, pray for him because you're supposed to be running.
When the weather was bad, he sent me a huge, long text message and I remember when I got home from the gym I just texted him and said, "Well, what time are you leaving?" and he said, "I'll leave at 5 a.m. Monday morning." I said I'll be in your driveway at 4:45 a.m. to pray for you before you leave, so I set my alarm. I came out with one eye open, but I went out and prayed for him when he started his new job providing for his family and there was a word that I read in the scriptures that I thought would encourage him to be the light of the world and to be a city set on a hill and I sent him on his way at 4:50 a.m. m. last Monday morning. and so the challenge here is that to make the gospel credible, you and I have to be different from the world and do different things in the world, it's never about the name, it's never about the title, it's never about the knowledge that you think you have or the knowledge that you think you do not have is about the task that has been assigned to us so I hope this encourages you today to be attentive to those Divine appointments because they are going to arrive at the time you least expected and I simply pray that God Give you your eyes to see those moments as you live and plan your lives every day.
God is in the business of drawing people to himself, as we see here when God draws Saul to Samuel with donkeys that he can use. anything, so let's know that and do our part and complete the task when it is assigned to us. Amen, okay, let's pray, Heavenly Father, we love you, we thank you for your word, we thank you for what, uh, even though this is in the middle of like. a biblical narrative, there are lessons in there that last lifetimes, which is why I love the fact that your word is living and active and it is sharper than any two-edged sword and, furthermore, it will never pass away, your God.
You have given us the model of how to live, but God, I pray most of all that you let the holy spirit guide our lives and that we are surrendered enough that we can see people the way you see them, that is the only way we can carry the necessary burden that we are called to bear for people unless we have surrendered to the Holy Spirit as he directs and guides us to those Divine appointments, so God, thank you for this day and I only ask for a continued blessing for our Wednesdays as we prepare for tonight with Bible studies, men's Bible studies with students since we are in this room here tonight.
God, I just pray that your hand is over everything. God, we love you and it is all these things that we ask of you with all your heart. holy and precious name amen and amen everyone have a fantastic day today very good foreigner foreigner thank you foreigner foreigner thank you foreigner foreigner
