8 Man:Spread Passing Attack in 8 Man Football - Ben Justus - Velma-Alma HS (OK)

Apr 04, 2024
Hi, I'm Ben Justice. I'm the offensive coordinator at Dell, my high school. I coached the quarterbacks and receivers. I'm going to talk about our

spread

air

attack

and eight b... and go over our offense as a whole. a little bit about our offense, we're all two-for-two and three-for-one, we make someone back and two back at the goal line, but it's more situational things, a lot of our things, we're an open field, we're going to be kind of extended agreement we do a lot of empty or fast pace we try to go as fast as we can I can control the tempo and slow it down if I want every time we will try to go as fast as possible we can, our offense averaged over 50 points per game, our quarterback starter, but with a 75 percent completion percentage across twenty-three rushing touchdowns for much more, he only had three interceptions in the air, but none of them were on the play I'm going to make.

Throughout today, those three interceptions, one of them and a kid tried to double break instead of just running his route and then another one, a kid messed up and our quarterback is confused by the concept, so It was quite efficient there. He didn't make a lot of mistakes on his part, a lot of them when something happened to the receiver's head, so our

spread

passing

philosophy we're going to take what the defense gives us if you're going to give us five free yards. We'll try to take it, if you're going to give us a chance, we'll take a shot and try to get a touchdown.

More Interesting Facts About,

8 man spread passing attack in 8 man football ben justus velma alma hs ok...

We are not going to give in, complicated with our schemes that we use. To do that in the past, I dropped all these paintings that we saw on Saturday and Sunday, when we finally boiled it down to that and just looked at the easiest way to

attack

, is the best way to do it, and if that was a problem and we needed to do it. Throw a problem in there, we don't need to do anything fancy, anything else if we're going to try to create mismatches, we try, they're good kids and you're bad kids and we give our kids a chance to win at the same time.

We will be complex for the defense and we will be simple for ourselves, that way we can play fast and it will be much more difficult for your kids and when you see it, it will look like a lot of things. for the defense, but for us it's very simple, we will try to develop explosive plays and create opportunities for explosive plays and then we will also get the ball to our playmakers in space and give them some one-on-one opportunities. -one, eight man, Wes, you're a coach, Snow, if you go one on one, there's a good chance that if you make that guy miss, you can go to the house, it's six points, our

passing

game, we basically have three different sections we have. we have our screens, our fast and then our back concepts, we launched the bubble screen, the arrow screen, we consider it to be more or less the same as the down screen, it's just one step, we will launch it right now, especially if someone is playing too far away.

Since an eight man doesn't have ledges like an 11 man, we figured we can just stop and hit that guy immediately and then let him do something in space, our slipstream, which is our outside screen for the number one receiver and do jailbreak, our slow praise. or setbacks, it has been a great play for us, we always have great numbers and we think that if we can get at least half of the box, we will have something good. I know that many times I am a lineman running down the field. They don't always find someone, but at least they can get their way and you know, our students can make something happen.
We like our earthquakes. Our favorite is the hitch. We really like launching it. We'll give it a little tilt. backside of Jed and I'll score my play action pitch for us. I'll throw the arrows as part of our quick play speed and then in fades and cutscenes, they've been a big part of our quick play, we don't like to take too long to throw them. those who want to get them out quickly and try to attack the space and then a lot of our recoil concepts, we broke our sail, which is kind of a flood, which is also another shallow flood, shallow is more of a compliment and helps us.
In our sails and things like that, we kind of check down, run some mesh, we like it more in the red zone, especially against the man, and then we'll read some hookups, some three-man hookups. I was a group of outfits that we really like. of groups in our offense would find that defenses have a hard time lining up and that puts more guys in conflict whether they're a wren defender, a pass defender, so when we plan our passing game, the first thing we're going to look at is how many defenders? deep do they have? How deep are your secondary players?
More than 70 yards? or they are closer than seven yards. Seven yards is kind of our power in the rushing market. How far are we looking to see if they are above seven yards? or less than seven yards and then we'll see how many linebackers or what the box is. Many times we will see a box of three and one. It was only one time this year that we didn't see a three-one box. we saw it too so we had to take into account how those two linebackers were going to play under coverage a lot of times when there's only one linebacker it's a much easier game plan but every once in a while you'll have teams that will jump to a 2 1 or a 2 2 so they can get more guys out of coverage.
How well do they close the route to break on routes with a lot of force? If they do, we'll see some double moves and we'll see some more exposed ones. To set it up, we're not going to try to get away from those guys, we're still going to try to attack those guys and then if they don't close out very well, obviously we can attack those guys in multiple ways, are they a man shift team or a zone team? Although sometimes the boys are on the man, sometimes they're going to take a zone turn, let's take advantage of that or if their man turned us, we can be more aggressive with our throats, we can take advantage of some opportunities, you know, every once in a while when you say. man, in turn, you throw it, it may not be a completion, but you can get a pass interference call, so we're going to take advantage of that and then the last thing we talk about in game planning is what limitations we're going to have. run what complementary spot we have if we know we're probably going to throw a lot of trouble we're going to get itchy if you're ready to go if we're going to throw the slant group we're going to have slant and get ready, if we know we're going to throw outs in the corners, we'll have a corner post, we'll find all the praise we can for our point guard or point guard passing game, so this is our 49er concept, it's what Call it in our system, our kids four are a problem, then nine like a fading or a seen, so the first thing we will do is our children will go up and try to have a prior idea of how to do it.
How safe these secondary players are and if they are over seven yards like we talked about before we anticipate that there will be a problem, but this can change after the snap, but from time to time we have people who try to take down the safety or a corner and we can take that vertical space so you don't decide that this is going to be a problem or it's going to be a seam or a fade most of the time. Now there are times when we do have a child and we don't deeply trust him. we'll tell them listen, we're learning 49er, you're going to hitch, we're not going to let you do a seam and the better they get as a route runner, we'll start giving them more options, for example, our F right here.
A lot of times we would let him come and run like a doubler and almost like a skinny post, especially if we knew we had this guy on the hook because we knew we had more vertical space here so he could attack this kid, he's a big talk guy to us, we really liked him a lot and then our H was a really good route runner under the kid to do a really good job, he's more of a running back for us, we ran a lot with him and we really did. I don't want to run it vertically with someone very tall, you'll see some of that in the film and then we let our L&R's basically choose what they're going to do, sometimes they go up to about ten and break it instead of breaking it.
The five of us really like that decision better, but the more they can do, the more you trust them, they can get away with a lot more things and the important thing is that I just need to be on the same page as a quarterback that we do not. throw interceptions at this point. I don't have our stats for this play, but it was a big play for us, we ran it a lot after big plays and that's how we would do it, it's a one word decision. I would yell 49er we' We would go up there and our kids were going to make us write.
I didn't want to have to review the coverage and say, "Okay, we have to run outside hitches and inside seams or outside fades and inside hitches." I want us to be able to just go and be right and have a good positive play to keep that pace going, that's why we work on this play all the time and our kids have gotten really good at it, it's probably their favorite game, our quarterback has a extremely high percentage. Throwing this out, obviously, you know, 75 percent of the year, a lot of that is good because of this play and our kids think they're going to be open all the time and it's answered the horse man, it's got answers in the first zone, it's a very versatile concept.
You can still run this with one back, you could probably run two back if you wanted to, basically it's just a pick concept, you know our quarterback will make us ride, we generally like to progress from inside to outside, so F to R or H to L and basically that way we make sure the safety isn't running over the top and trying to cover something that we can hold on to right here, that makes these guys on the outside really a scene that you see here, I actually have nine guys on the field right now, this guy is trying to escape and you tell him how his pace is affecting these guys right now.
This L is thinking he's going to go over the top with this guy being pressured, nor is he thinking the same thing with him being pressured, he's going to go over the top of our H and our F are looking and they're seeing these locks and right now they're thinking they're probably going to be running some kind of route underneath, so the moment the safety is activated it starts spinning downwards. My son notices and climbs to the top. We were able to make a 20-yard play against these guys just because we were going fast and we can read this route on the fly.
Our age sits. I would like it for him. To prepare vertically a little harder, he didn't run that route very hard, but he knew he was going to be open underneath right away. We still want him to push at least five just to try to maintain that confidence that you see our outside guys are taking. They got the top was open as well and I think our guy on the bottom was open to see if we had a mixed clip here so here it is later in the game so against the zone this team wanted to play a lot of coverage .
For us and trying to get these corners on the flats, our quarterback figured it out and basically this safety once we started figuring out a zone that we knew if we sent both guys vertically it would be two on one, now he still we'll say if you're open underneath, sit down, we're not going to take you on a bad route, but a vertical press really keeps you safe by opening up this outside guy. You can see that the safety basically remains on the hash, the corner ducked and it's the incomplete easy throw. and touchdown for us this time, we flip the set a lot of times, we'll have our RF, our looming player, to the right and our H to the lab, but if you want to flip it, even running however you want. a lot of times in our rush because we're going to put our wing here sometimes it's good sometimes it's bad it creates a lot of space these are better route runners and then what time you need to get on the field you have more options and you get the attacking grass so who right now are obviously still in the same coverage to see, they have their safeties squatting in the corners.
We like outside receivers to release to the outside, but if they're playing this outside and the easier release inside it's going to take that, but then we're going to try to come back outside, so right now this kid should be doing the hitch in addition to running a fade and then we have our hit this year that holds the lock long enough to allow us to release it. that window up here we are again it's a blur they have this corner that's squat they have the corner that's squat over here and then a safety sitting about twenty feet away so this kid I'll be thinking right now I'm under this The kid should to think I'm over and then under and then over because they're pressed corners.
Our quarterback obviously looks like we have room outside to throw to him and he takes advantage of it if this guy ran a little bit. the tighter you can hold that safety andkeep them out of that release now there are also answers to force pressure on this. I go back to the beginning. Now they are starting to try to do some corner loading. Many times teams will try to do it. stop us with pressure, they can change their alignments and coverage or they can take guys off the edge or bring the microphone and you will see a lot of clips where people try to draw their people, but because of the adjustments in the route we can get this ball out quickly and a lot of times when people throw a sticker and try to play over it, even the whole space underneath is open and we can hit that very quickly, so both kids should have been making throws up here if our quarterback would have noticed they were bringing that guy in, we should have thrown it there, but here he makes a good play and you get this mistake, he sits in the hole and we were able to hand it to him and get a 15 yard gain and we really didn't have to do much, it still allows us to play fast , a high percentage of completions or just being able to go and our kids are making this trip, this is next week right here, this team in tennis throws a little deep to the guys on the outside so they played a little more cushion , so obviously we're going to charter more routes underneath this week.
I think now the safety is sitting deep, this guy is sitting about five or six yards away, but he's bailing the same thing up top and then this Safety is playing and in the middle, I'm sorry, this guy is really going to have to read this route and decide. Yes, it's me. I'm going to sit or I'm going to sit out and this team also tried to put a lot of pressure with four men when we first went in with eight men, a lot of people said we can't run this offense because I'll only bring my three to your block , they will bring four and you will not have time to take them out, obviously, if your children know what they are doing, the pressure should not be a problem, we want to record again to take. that three step drop and you're going to reach the last step and take it out now if you know if you're going to throw it in the hitch you can probably just take a one step drop and just take it out you see it gets shorter here.
He picks it up because he knows he's going to get pressure, he takes it out quickly and then another great thing is that we teach our kids when you get the ball, go up, don't dance, this kid almost breaks, it's a tackle if our elbow does it. would have thrown a block, this kid breaks his tackle, he's going to score, your supers have to make sure they're doing a good job getting up the field, they'll even run this play in the red zone and you see me up, up here, this corner takes. a man turns, we are going to be very aggressive every time we see a man turn, even if it is an incomplete play, many times we are going to cause a pass interference, they can't see the ball every time they take that man's turn , so Let's take a chance, so down here, starting from the Elbe, these kids pressured me to try to go.
This guy probably should have gone over since this guy was so close to him, but it was a kid we told him about. him, you'll stay under us, they're basically in your face when they make you, maybe one of those kids I talked about earlier, he's more of a runner, I'm a short kid, not a big deep pass guy, and so that's a lot of times we kept him under 44 right here, he does a good job, he attacks, then he sits back and works away from coverage and then up, obviously, this guy is pressured, so we'll take him off of Hurley to make that a man turn and we're going to take a chance and get six easy points, so we're going to have this family here with the corners pressed up, this guy is sitting about 5 yards away, but we're going to keep him underneath and then let him have the freedom to Work on this guy traveling here and decide if you want to go deep and give him more area to maybe run like a doubler, kind of like that skinny post and then this guy will probably go because he's already seen this guy pressured trying to get in. the face on him, you can obviously see how this guy texts outside and works inside.
It is a great training point for our air. We tell him to attack that outside hip and then work on his face, especially if we know they're going to come out. the middle of the field is open but he runs a great route right here our quarterback throws it on time he throws it at a nice pace 23 yard gain wasn't much that's very complicated a lot of the things that make it work there are just in the details of how you run your routes and the timing of them, all good, next play, they still look the same, we've got that guy up there, we're going to try to take advantage of that, this kid takes that outside, freed up.
On a man's turn, we're going to take a shot. Worst case scenario, we think we're going to get pass interference and then a lot of times, even if we have an incomplete point on this by taking a throw, it's second and 10. We feel like an eighth man, we can still get those 10 yards, so we think it's a good time to shoot, especially if we're going at just the right pace even when the chains aren't even on. I mean, we're moving that fast. his kids are getting more out of it our kids are used to you at this speed since his kids don't bunch up so we ran past this kid we got a nice 35 yard touchdown so this team here wanted to play their corners deeply.
I had seen us the week before throw a lot of stuff to the outside receivers when they were down and then they would take these outside backers who are almost sure and go with them and try to get into our RF and our age. face and so he still has the same kid that we tell to stay under, but since we're doing that, we're letting our f have more deep options and this is a great example whenever he's running that curvature route because it's going. to attack this guy's outside hip and then pass it through him, our quarterback throws it in rhythm in time and we have a nice 32 yard play.
Our two outside receivers should probably be sitting like this, they've forgotten two. five six seven yards from them, the guys are still on top, they need to close it down and find a way to get open, they don't get open here, you can see the corners are still on top of them, but our receiver is on the inside. the filling middle makes a good play or some good route and creates a great opportunity for us, puts us inside the five, so this is later in the game, they are starting to put their guys further back, as far as which we simply work on.
Under our guide we said you're going to hitch no matter what, especially after we took this big number 44 and ran it through the middle, you can see they're really trying to bracket it and keep the guys on it, like this that our quarterback just takes what they give us, just finds this guy underneath and we get seven easy yards out of this, we don't always have to find a touchdown, you know, second and three is a good situation. I think every coach in America would take Second and three, this thing here early they tried to play in some zone.
We really like it when teams try to play in the zone again. This is what many times the owners squat and will leave this outdoor space open, well, if our internal guys. they're doing a good job pressuring vertically, he's going to keep this one safe a lot of times, there's not going to be anyone out there to cover that outside receiver, so you're really making them look dumb, so here's our guy, he's running that curveball route. H is sitting underneath when we hold the safety up and we can throw it, they say this man from the corner plate and ran with it, we didn't like it, we could have worked it again down here under the railing, but like me.
He said that when they play zone there is a lot of vertical space that we can attack and we got a 40 yard touchdown with this and we didn't really have to do much, it really wasn't the best ball, but if they go to zone play, you can take advantage of it, this is another good example, receivers running, that kind of skinny sign, this guy right now is attacking the outside hip of this safety, this guy will sit underneath and try to lure this guy to stay. on top of it and then we're going to work this route right across this guy's face on that skinny pole.
I like the ball to come out a little quicker, but it's a good route, he can hit it and we get a touchdown out of it. This thing here they were basically not going to let us beat them deep, they had seen it how many times on film and stuff, we're just going to take this under and our kids will do a good job trying to get down the field, they're some extra. yards and it's a full yard and then this allows us to play some explosive plays because now we're going to nickel and dime and then we're going to try to get them to react and then we get those pulls and drives. or maybe we can run that guy on the hitch and then outside or see that we're in a post on Neath on him, we can really take advantage of what the defense is going to give us, so this is the last clip here, this team .
They would try to take these corners and basically overrun them and try to eliminate both routes and then they would take this Mike linebacker and really drop him over the middle almost as a deep third player and this is another thing about how well they did it. Kids lock up and break on routes because even though they're trying to get these corners to pull kind of deep thirds, this vertical action of these outside receivers just holds them up and then when we run to our two inside receivers down the seams. and we basically almost played a two-on-one with this Mike linebacker, who you know is usually not the best at closing routes and then we can get a big touchdown out of this, so obviously they have two guys deep inside, outside of these.
The guys inside are ready to go. I thought you should have thrown it to the other guy, but I'm not going to complain every time we get a 45-yard touchdown, so thanks for seeing my contact information up front like he hit a rock. Write to me if you have any questions. I am willing to share anything. I won't have any secrets. I really want to spread the word about an 8-man, especially since there isn't much out there. Thanks for listening.
