Right now it's only available on test vehicles here in the US, but I'll show you how it works.

I'm here in Virginia at Audi. US headquarters to show you what the future of night driving will look like Audi head of product management Philip Robek What did these lights do right instead of thinking of a static light as a low beam and a high beam, consider it as a spotlight? 1.3 million micromirrors in each headlight that create this image and do not blind other people. I get behind the wheel to see for myself. Wow, I can see, yes, everything. This night driving experience is completely different and very different. I better feel like a safer driver. Notice these arrows on the pavement.
They help you stay within the lanes. When I enter the highway, the lights highlight my lane without affecting other drivers. Okay, so this car now pulled in front of me and noticed. how it has a shadow now yeah, oh interesting, but the real light show takes place on this dark and windy road, it almost feels like magic because of the amount of light being cast everywhere. I'm not used to seeing that as a Driver change car so I can see what it's like to drive towards the test car with adaptive headlights, its high beams are on, yes, but they're not a problem for me, yes, while this car behind of it with the LEDs is quite bright, yes, it is notable.
To see the difference, do you think this technology saves lives? Fully adaptive headlights have been used in Europe and several other countries for about a decade, but automakers and safety experts here say bureaucracy in the United States means it could be years before. We see that this technology is allowed in cars here, so in the meantime you want to drive slowly at night, look towards the right edge of the road to avoid dazzling lights and if you suspect your headlights are misaligned, you can check if there are any. light is higher than the other when you pull into your garage or point your car at a wall, even an inch or two can mean major misalignment 100 feet from the road and don't forget to check with your mechanic, they should be able to fix it easily .
Realign your headlights, it's not just road safety that has become a hot topic. Retailers have also begun to tighten their refund policies and charge additional fees. All this, according to the National Retail Federation. Americans will return $816 billion worth of goods in 2022. So how can we avoid it? Those extra fees that's how you can make your returns easier and cheaper, so Vick used to be when you bought something online and you didn't like it, it was an easy and painless return, but that's not the case anymore. Things are definitely changing Hoda. Once upon a time when we were nervous about going online to buy something, what was this?
Internet shopping retailers were what they were. Look, we're going to make it very easy for you. We will send it to you for free. You can return it. For us, having a coffee will be like going to a physical store, in 15 or 20 years, and now we are doing great, but it is not free for the retailer when processing a return, the cost is between 15 and 20 at least and we talked. about 16 and a half percent of all online purchases return and there is a real cost and now retailers are trying to recoup it. A recent survey by go TRG shows that 60 of the retailers are reconfiguring their return policies in one way or another, it almost seemed as if they wanted you to try it on at home, send it back, no problem, well, these are times of change, so what are some of the new rules and pitfalls we should work out?
Okay, for PBP. Okay, I admit I'm making a mistake. this pause before buying, yes, buy, the less you will return. However, this is a good time to check the return policies of your favorite retailers because something may have changed and then when you get that item if you're not sure what you want. Make sure you keep it in its original packaging, try it without makeup or perfume because if you return it it has to be in a salable condition so a lot of these returns end up in a landfill so it's a waste even if you get your money back .
It's wasteful and there's a cost to the environment, all that shipping, that carbon footprint of shipping something to you that you package it up and send it back, so those are things that you need to keep in mind and if you're going to go back to the store , always bring your ID and your original form of payment which just helps speed up someone said wait one someone said wait a week if you're buying something online that's not urgent yes if you look back at your little basket and it's a week later and it's still there and you need it, so get it, yeah, so let's look at the policies of some of the biggest stores in the country.
Okay, let's start with Target. Target allows you 90 days to return almost anything except electronics, so it's 30 days, but if you have a Target red card. You have up to 120 days to make the return now. Amazon is the interesting thing. There have always been 30-day free returns as easy as possible, but you need to pay attention because there are many third-party sellers on Amazon and sometimes their return policies are different. They are also reportedly starting to implement a one dollar return fee, so if you go to UPS to return something to Amazon but there is a Kohl's or Whole Foods closer to you, they will charge you a dollar for that item to return. and finally Walmart is 90 days in person in store saying they have a shorter return window for electronics but those are the big companies and their policies as of now what about Nordstrom always had the best returns?
Back, just the retailers definitely have their own thing, for example, Zara 395 to return an item, um, JCPenney, eight dollars, but if you go to the physical store, as with most retailers, it's usually free if You don't give it back to them, uh. Another thing is loyalty programs, so DSW, which is a designer shoe warehouse, and HM, if you return an item online by mail, there is a fee, but if you are a member of the loyalty program it is free, so it's really worth looking at the fine print to see if you should sign up, but again pause PBP before connecting to the following

tips

to help you save on your energy bill this summer and later how to protect your online privacy and avoiding looming consumer confidentiality pitfalls thank you, thank you, confidential abroad summer is here and that means higher energy bills are also on the way.
The good news is that there are easy ways to save big on your bills. Let's talk about some ways to maximize efficiency. I mean, I was talking about some of these places in the western country. The coast came in the '90s, so yeah, when was the last time you checked your air conditioning unit to see if it was clean or not clogged? We just let that thing run and go, it needs to be inspected, it needs to be cleaned, now is the time before. It gets very crowded and summer begins. The next thing that happens is to think about the thermostat.
What do you have next to the thermostat? Is there a TV next to it? A lamp. That thing emits heat and activates the thermostat to keep the air conditioning running. longer, so be sure to move anything hot away from your thermostat and then we'll talk about strategic plantings. Think about your landscaping. If now is the time to put in some new trees and shrubs, what can you do to shade your air conditioning unit? units, yeah, the unit itself, right, you don't want a messy bush, although that will drop things on it and the other thing is to think about the hottest part of your house, the part that faces south and west, yeah you can plant some trees. that will provide shade that will reduce your air conditioning bill by at least 10, really yes, it is a big difference in the strategic picture, so let's jump in now, let's talk about some ways, some

tips

to maintain the inside of your house a little bit more cool for less fans.
If you're your friend, a fan uses 160th the amount of energy as an air conditioning unit, so use it in conjunction with your air conditioner and for every degree you can keep your air conditioner above 75 degrees, you'll save another 15 degrees. on your electric ceiling fans. fans or even floor or table fans, any type of fan that can help move air, will not cool the air, but will move body heat away from your skin and make you feel cooler. The other thing that is very simple is to buy some caulk or weatherstripping to seal any cracks in your walls and then if you have gaps under your door or around your windows, get the weatherstripping;
Finally, it is a very economical solution at the hardware store if you can keep your blinds closed during the hottest hours of the day you will reduce the heat gain by 45 33 if you keep the curtains closed so it is simple if you want the sunlight to come out outside these things add up I'm in the middle you know anyway Well I didn't realize this, many electric companies charge different rates for peak hours, they really do and it depends where you live at the end of the season, so you should look it up on your energy company's website or call them.
Generally between two and six is when you want to avoid using your large appliances your dishwasher your washer and dryer use it after 6 PM or on weekends the other thing we don't think about unplugging those small appliances the chargers anything you have plugged into Vampire devices, they are slowly sucking the juice out of the electrical system and causing your electrical consumption to increase those incandescent light bulbs, think about how many light bulbs you have in your house, light fixtures in the ceiling, change everything to LED, noIt only makes a LED bulb lasts 25,000 hours compared to just 1,200 hours for an incandescent bulb, but those older bulbs only emit heat which also makes your house warmer, yes, and costs three times as much to run.
I didn't realize this is ours. Water heaters and our homes are responsible for about a fifth of our bill. Yes, 18 of your annual energy bill comes from your water heater. This is what I was going to ask you, Craig, last time, if you remember what grade you're supposed to set. I looked at him and didn't know he hadn't even looked down now 120 degrees. I was going to say 120 degrees perfect. Right on the money, you learned something from the last segment, which is why the consumer product safety commission says this is not only safer. It will save someone from being scolded for hot water, but it is more energy efficient.
The other thing is only washing a full load. I'm sure we already know this and use cold water unless you have very dirty clothes. The last part is. use the sun, at least start drying some of your clothes outside and maybe if you don't like how crispy they are, throw them in the dryer for the last five or ten minutes to fluff them up again, okay, but use the sun, use the outdoors. I know with credit cards, for example, you'll say just call, just ask for a discount. Apparently, with this maybe you can try it. It's that true.always ask for a discount no matter where the situation hangs up and this is what your energy provider has programs to help you with your income and the best people with disabilities may qualify for some of these programs the other thing is a lot Companies want to encourage you to air condition your home.
Install Energy Star Appliances. We bought some light bulbs through Con Ed, which is here in New York, and the light bulbs were like 25 cents each, so there are programs that can save you up to 500 or more. on your energy bill Be great tips, save almost 30 percent. Targeting your preem customers says some of this data collection helps consumers by giving them a better online experience. What is the benefit to the consumer? The benefit to the consumer is actually receiving ads that enrich or create a better digital experience. There is no way to remove all advertising. our digital ecosystem, but the framework also advocates for consumer privacy and enforcement of privacy laws, so the balance for brands is making sure they don't violate our privacy and don't appear to be harassers.
Do you think there is a world where you can have both a consumer protect their data and have their privacy and still have ads and an online experience that is relevant to them. I hope so. While it's not perfect, I think the goal of many smart advertising brands is to continue to enrich that experience, not to hijack you and it's not just your email but also your phone number that allows companies to text you and target you. to you for ads and the more your phone number is available, the greater the chance that you could be part of a data breach that would make you a bigger target for robocalls and spam messages and, like mailing lists, mail, it can also be difficult to keep track of monthly subscriptions that can easily add up, but there are some simple steps you can take to reduce your expenses.

Fortune everyone's a stage that includes their home when it comes time to sell, with existing home sales down nearly 23 percent from last year, some homeowners are now choosing to set the stage for potential buyers by giving give their spaces a small makeover before putting them on the market. In the main living areas we also repainted many walls but more importantly, we massively tidied up the house, from a fresh coat of paint and unobstructed windows to updated furniture and floor coverings. A recent survey found that 81 percent of buyer agents said staging made it easier for the buyer.
To envision a property as their future home, we have to distance the seller a bit to help the buyer feel like they can move in. Stacy Esser, a real estate agent in New Jersey who runs her own staging company, says most homes don't need a complete renovation to attract buyers. Small changes can generate a big return. Sellers spend an average of 400 to 600 on staging. She has seen it time and time again that when you make a small initial investment, it increases the sales price. of the house, yes, you will actually sell your house for more money every time SRS Ready Homes also sell faster this listing under contract in a weekend for one hundred and twenty-six thousand dollars above the asking price and when the houses On average they are on the market for 160 days.

Esser says wherever your eye lands the sale begins, you really want to help the buyer. Visualize in that space the most important rooms to organize the living room, the master bedroom and the kitchen, so this is a house that goes on the market.
In fact, this weekend Esser took us on a tour of the dramatic before and after of this home. One of the things we start with is always removing the heavy curtains from the windows and letting the sunlight into what would be a newly painted formal living room. neutral color before its transformation into a more casual flex space, tell me what you did here, so first of all, I think what we did was make the room look much larger and created multiple seating areas in this really large space . you do in the kitchen to tidy it up and make it more attractive to buyers, so one of the easiest things we can do is basically help a seller tidy up a kitchen.
Esther's recipe for a market-ready kitchen, cleaning the counters, changing out bulky furniture and accessorizing with pops of color using items you already have in your refrigerator or pantry, you really livened up the kitchen, yes we totally did, it's expensive and anyone could do this, it's really just vegetables, so we like to use this cookbook to make it look like someone was just cooking and just changing the table made a big difference, you combine the round table with the touch of white and really brightens the space, and Esser's upstairs team, which turns this den into a kids' bedroom, helps sell homes when it comes to Staging it's not just what's on the inside that counts.

Thank you so much for staying tuned to all of us at NBC News. I am Vicki Nguyen foreigner. I love the city of Baltimore. I've been coming here for years and if there's one thing I know it's that the city of Baltimore takes its trash seriously. I love Baltimore crabs, this is the Stop and Vine of crabs and I've been eating crabs since I could. sit at a table, it's a little spicy, salty and tasty all in one. Mmm, crab cakes have been enjoyed by many for centuries throughout the Chesapeake region, but here in Baltimore they are a way of life. and one of the city's most popular spots is hidden inside the world-famous Lexington Market. Today we returned to Houston and wanted to eat the best crab cake in town. We are from Orlando. I'm glad to be here. I saw it and when I came here in the '90s you'll still see it today. I'm really a fan. Oh, that's okay and it's funny because I often tell people that mom and dad don't treat employees any different than how they treat me and that's why you end up having so many multi-generational families staying here. That's true, Faidley's is not just a family business, it is family run.

In fact, it is a grueling job that is passed down from generation to generation, including blackjacks.
These were the black boatmen who worked these waters since the 19th century and are a vital part of this community. The Chesapeake Bay is home to a wide variety of seafood, but none as valuable or well-known as the blue crab. The catch here represents more than a third of the country's supply and, on average, more than 50 million pounds of blue crabs are caught from the bay. Eastern Shore, by the mid-to-late 19th century, Kent Narrows had also become one of the bay's many unlikely havens for free and enslaved African Americans. There were more black boatmen anywhere on the entire east coast, probably in the United States, those boatmen also known as the blackjacks forged their path to liberation on the water, their expertise essential to the burgeoning fishing industry, to the point of that the government granted some black sailors Siemens protection certificates that give sailors American citizenship and a path to economic freedom. Hi Lewis, I'm coming to you now. Okay, I got you, you had a bite to eat in the day, the well-being that awaits you is your own boss and you get what you want to do and no one tells you to go find me this or that Lewis Carter, 75, still finds the same sense. of freedom on the water today is also one of the last generations of black sailors alive every morning before the sun rises he goes out to fish for crabs in the bay.
I started in 1961. I'm 15 now. And I've been at it ever since. Now I'm going down the line and when I get to the other end I'm going to throw it out, the clams are going to come up on that bait and the water pressure is going to push them back into this pot, okay, these are the big males, you put them in. in a basket that is a woman with red claws, she put them in a basket that he wanted. The last Mohicans remained. There are not many people who still work, they make a living from water.
Most of them moved away. They got all the jobs and it's changing because it's harder to win. making a living on the bank crabbing season runs from spring to late fall changes in climate and labor costs have made each successive year more challenging as younger generations take up new trades There are fewer people working on the waters and ultimately fewer black boatmen when I started. It was a black water planet, but they died out and the younger ones never feel bad, you know? And I don't think it's a coincidence. I think Captain Meredith estimates there are less than a dozen black sailors in the bay, as many of them are. his companions had to take up another job when I was crabbing, a teenager, I caught up to 50 bushels a day at this time, crabbing is catching two or three bushels a day, now I started organizing fishing trips because crabbing began to decrease and as fishing. was more lucrative in terms of money and education, its Charters are an opportunity to keep the stories of blackjacks alive for generations to come, although the tradition in these waters is changing.
One thing remains the same, nothing tastes like Chesapeake Bay Maryland crayon, it has that certain flavor to it. the only place like it in the world is the Chesapeake Bay bluegrass foreigner next door an up-and-coming Baltimore chef inspired by his family's love of cooking thank you thank you foreigner Baltimore a new generation is putting a spin on crab cake I'm Alex Perez, I am the owner of Poppy Cuisine. I'm an artist at heart, so cooking the culinary arts, you know, that's something I'm very passionate about, not necessarily having a recipe to start with and just getting. in the kitchen freestyling and creating a huge piece, it's that freestyling approach that gets people walking through these doors clamoring for a taste.
Crab is king in Baltimore, so you'll see crab cakes, crab cakes, French fries, crab cakes, egg rolls, everyone's been going crazy. Also this is the ball so I just come back for that and I enjoyed every time I come here, we actually live in DC so we did the whole beer hour right now. I'm drizzling our Warhead and our aioli sauces. I have a family from the Dominican Republic I'm Afro-Latino I'm black on my mother's side and pretty much, like always, I've loved food and, uh, cooking food, eating food, so I learned to cook from my father, so my father taught me.
He taught me how to cook at the age of 10. I grew up

ing my grandmother cook a lot too, so I started combining the foods I learned to cook for my grandmother with the foods I learned to cook for myself.Check that the headlights are aligned correctly, pointing outward and downward. an LED headlight misaligned just a few degrees to show me what can happen on the road. Wow, the LEDs are already pretty bright, but when they're tilted up you can't see anything else. This would be very dangerous if it were. driving, says another contributing factor is large trucks and SUVs, which accounted for 75 percent of all vehicle sales last year.
Those taller vehicles mean the headlights are higher and more likely to shine directly into the eyes of a driver in a smaller, lower vehicle that I couldn't see. For five to ten seconds, Aaron Madrid totaled his Chevy Sonic in November when he says he was blinded by an oncoming pickup truck when I could see that I had swerved into oncoming traffic and then ended up in a tree, fortunately he was not hurt. He just felt like the lights went out, but Ashanti Collins wasn't so lucky. He says that in May 2021 the lights of an oncoming vehicle caused his accident.
He was totally blinding. Yes, I couldn't see anything. It was the only thing I saw before. I woke up on the side of the road in my car. She had to be airlifted to a hospital to treat a broken arm and dislocated wrist. When you looked at the photos of your car, did you think it was a miracle that you survived that accident? Yes, definitely. Looking at the car, it was crazy, experts and automakers agreed that the main solution to this glaring problem is something called adaptive headlight technology. Right now it's only available on test vehicles here in the US, but I'll show you how it works.
I'm here in Virginia at Audi's US headquarters to show you what the future of night driving will look like. Philip Robek, head of product management at Audi, what did these lights do right instead of thinking of a static light as a low beam and a high beam? Think of it like a projector, there are 1.3 million micromirrors in each headlight that create this image and do not blind other people. I get behind the wheel to see for myself. Wow, I can see, yeah, this whole driving experience. The night is completely different and much better. I feel like a safer driver.
Notice these arrows on the pavement. They help you stay within the lanes when entering the highway. The lights highlight my lane without affecting other drivers. Okay, so this car now came in. He stood in front of me and I noticed that he now has a shadow. Yeah, oh, interesting, but the real light show takes place on this dark and windy road. It almost feels like magic because of the amount of light that is cast over everything. I'm not used to seeing that, as a driver, I change cars so I can see what it's like to drive towards the test car with adaptive lights, its high beams are on, yes, but they are not a problem for me, while this car behind him with LED lights.
It's quite brilliant yes, it's noticeable to see the difference. Do you think this technology saves lives? Fully adaptive headlights have been used in Europe and several other countries for about a decade, but automakers and safety experts here say there is red tape in the United States. This means it could be years before we see this technology allowed in cars here, so in the meantime you want to drive slowly at night, look to the right edge of the road to avoid dazzling lights, and if you suspect your headlights are misaligned, you can do it. In fact, check to see if one light is higher than the other when you pull into your garage or point your car at a wall—even an inch or two can mean major misalignment 100 feet off the road, and don't forget to check with your mechanic.
They should be able to easily realign their headlights, it's not just road safety that has become a hot topic, retailers have also started tightening their refund policies and charging additional fees, all according to the National Retail Federation. Americans will return $816 billion worth of goods in 2022. So how do we avoid those extra tariffs? Here's how you can make your returns easier and cheaper. So for Vick it used to be that when he bought something online and he didn't like it, it was a simple, easy return, but that's not the case anymore. Things are definitely changing Hoda Once upon a time we were nervous about going online to buy something.
What is this? Online shopping retailers said Look, we're going to make it really easy for you. We will send it to you. free, you can return it to us, it will be like going to a physical store, fast forward 15 to 20 years and now we are doing spectacularly, but it is not free for the retailer when they process a return, it is a 15 to 20 minimum and we talk about 16 and a half percent of all online purchases come back and there is a real cost and now retailers are trying to recoup that. A recent survey by go TRG shows that 60 of the retailers are reconfiguring their return policies in one way or another.
I almost felt like they wanted you to try it on at home. Return it. No problem. Well, these are times of change. So what are some of the new rules and pitfalls we should work out? Good for PBP. Okay, I admit it. you, I'm doing this, pause before you buy, yes, buy, the less you will return, this is a good time to check the return policies of your favorite retailers because something has probably changed and then when you get that item, If I'm not sure you want it, make sure you keep it in its original packaging, try it without makeup or perfume because if you return it, it must be in a salable condition, so a lot of these returns end up in a landfill, so which is a waste even if you get it.
Getting your money back is a waste and there's a cost to the environment, all that shipping, that carbon footprint of shipping something to you that you package it up and ship it back, so those are things you have to take into account and, If you are going back to the store, always. bring your ID and your original form of payment that only helps speed up someone said wait one someone said wait a week if you are going to buy something online that is not urgent yes if you look back in your little basket and it's a week later and still It's there and you need it, so get it, yeah, so let's look at the policies of some of the biggest stores in the country.
Well, let's start with Target. Target allows you 90 days to return almost anything except electronics so it's 30 days but if you have a Target red card you have up to 120 days to return now Amazon is the interesting one there has always been 30 days of free returns the most easy possible, but you should pay attention because there are many third party sellers on Amazon and sometimes their return policies are different and they are also starting to implement, according to the information, a one dollar return fee, so if you are going to UPS to return something to Amazon but there is a Kohl's or Whole Foods that is closer to you, they will charge you a dollar. on that item to return and finally Walmart is 90 days in person in store.
They have a shorter return window for electronics but those are the big companies and their policies as of now what about Nordstrom always had the best returns? I don't like it, you take it back, it's just that retailers have their own thing, definitely, for example, Zara 395 to return an item, um, JCPenney, eight dollars, but if you go to the physical store, as with most retailers, it's usually free if you don't ship it. Getting back to them, the other thing is loyalty programs, so DSW, which is a designer shoe warehouse, and HM, if you return an item online by mail, there is a fee, but if you are a member of the loyalty program loyalty, it's free, so it's really worth looking at. the fine print to see if you need to sign up, but again, PBP pauses before connecting to the person, the following tips will help you save on your energy bill this summer, and later, how to protect your online privacy and avoid the looming dangers of consumer confidentiality, thank you, foreigner, we.
We are back with confidential information for the consumer. Summer is here and that means higher energy bills are coming too. The good news is that there are easy ways to save big on your bills. Let's talk about some ways to maximize efficiency. I mean, I was talking about some of These places in the country on the west coast hit the 90s, so yeah, when was the last time you checked your air conditioning unit to see if it was clean or clogged? We just let that thing go and go, it needs to be inspected. You have to clean now is the time before there is a lot of activity and summer begins.
The next thing is to think about the thermostat. What do you have next to the thermostat? Is there a TV next to it? A lamp. That thing is giving off heat. activating your thermostat to keep the air conditioning running longer, so make sure you move anything that's hot away from your door and then we'll talk about strategic planting, think about your landscaping, if now is the time to put in some new trees and shrubs , what can you do to shade your air conditioning unit, just make all the units, yes the unit itself correct, you don't want a messy bush, although that will drop things on it and the other thing is to think about the hottest part of your house, the part that faces south and west, if you can plant some trees that provide shade, that will reduce your air conditioning bill by at least 10, really yes, it is a big difference in the strategic landscape, so let's jump in now, let's talk about some ways, some tips to maintain the interior. of your house a little cooler Fewer fans are your friends a fan uses 160 part the amount of energy than an air conditioning unit, so use it in conjunction with your air conditioner and every degree you can keep your air conditioner above 75 degrees you are saving another 15 on your electric ceiling fans, ceiling fans or even floor or table fans, any type of fan that can help move the air, will not cool you down, but will move your body heat away from your skin and keep you cool. will make you feel. cooler, the other thing that is very simple is to buy some caulk or weather stripping to seal any cracks in the walls and then if you have gaps under the door or around the windows, have the weather shipped, it is a very inexpensive solution at the hardware store finally if you can keep the blinds closed during the hottest hours of the day you will reduce the heat gain by 45 33 if you keep the curtains closed so it's simple if you want the sunlight out Outside, these things add up.
I'm in the middle of what you know okay I didn't realize this a lot of electric companies charge different rates for peak hours they really do and it depends on where you live at the end of the season so you should look for that on Your power company's website or call them usually between two and six is when you want to avoid using your large appliances, your dishwasher, your washer and dryer, use them after 6 p.m. m. or on weekends. The other thing we don't think about is unplugging those little ones. appliances chargers everything you have plugged in vampire devices are slowly sucking the juice out of the electrical system and causing your electric bill to increase those incandescent light bulbs think about how many light bulbs you have in your house ceiling lights change everything to LED not just one LED bulb lasts 25,000 hours compared to 1,200 hours for an incandescent bulb, but those older bulbs only emit heat which also makes your house warmer, yes, and they cost three times as much to run. true, I didn't realize that our water heaters and our homes are responsible for about a fifth of our bill, yes, 18 of your annual energy bill comes from your water heater.
This is what I was going to ask you, Craig, the last time you remember. what degree are you supposed to set it to and I didn't know I hadn't even looked here now 120 degrees was going to say 120 degrees perfect right on the money did you learn something from the last segment so the consumer The product safety commission says this is not Not only is it safer but it will prevent someone from getting burned by hot water, but it is also more energy efficient. The other thing is just doing a full load of laundry. I'm sure we already know this and we use cold water unless If you have very dirty clothes, the last part is to use this sun, at least start taking some of your clothes outside and maybe if you don't like how crunchy it gets, throw it in the dryer for the last five or ten minutes to fluff it up again. okay, use the sun, use the outdoors, you know, with credit cards for example, you'll say just call, just ask for a discount, apparently with this maybe you could try it, that's right, always ask for a discount, no matter what. no matter where you go.Hang on, no, and this is what your energy provider has, programs to help you with your income, and that is that people with disabilities can qualify for some of these programs.
The other thing is that many companies want to encourage you to weatherize. install Energy Star appliances in your house, we bought some light bulbs through Con Ed, which is here in New York, and the light bulbs were like 25 cents each, so there are programs that can save you up to 500 or more on your energy bill Okay, I know. great tips, save almost 30 percent, it's like an encyclopedic town, thank you, we present what you need to know to make it harder for advertisers to track you online, plus how to reduce subscriptions and save more money, we'll be right back after this, thank you, thank you. thank you, thank you foreigner, welcome back to Consumer Confidential, hand in your email and get a discount.
It sounds simple, but did you know that your email is a valuable key to unlocking a lot of personal information? Here's what you should consider before sharing that email. It's a common site on most websites with pop-ups asking you to enter your email address for a discount, but it may not be worth it. Your email connects businesses to a treasure trove of information that can go back decades. What you read where you buy. your age marital status sexual orientation medical history income including where you have traveled and lived all the information that comes together to reveal your personal profile I have had my email address longer than my phone number and that is a reality for many people Patrick Jackson is a cybersecurity expert with an online privacy and offline company your email address is much more valuable than people probably think they can get your first and last name your birthday who you work for what school you go to He says that while Apple and Google block apps apps for cookies, not those cookies, these cookies, advertisers and brands are now directly asking you for your email, it's something that consumers don't really understand, they don't understand that this is really the glue that connect all these. pieces of information together and when you open an email that can give advertisers even more information about you, Jackson showed me how it works in real time, okay, I got an email that says Shoe Sale, that for me, yeah, That's for you, okay?
I'm going to open it, hit a tracker on this mailer and the moment I open it it learns a lot about me just by opening this email. I can get your location, which is New York, New York, you're connecting from an iPhone. you're using the Outlook app on your device the moment you open it and if you opened it again, why should I care that you know all that about me? It's not clear what happened, it creates this Beast that we no longer have control over once. This date is collected and where does all that data go?
Patrick says he often ends up with so-called data brokers who might collect it and sell it to people like Michael Preme, the CEO of Modern Impact, an advertising agency that helps brands target their customers. Some of this data collection helps consumers by providing them with a better online experience. What is the benefit for the consumer? The benefit to the consumer is actually receiving ads that enrich or create a better digital experience. There is no way to eliminate all advertising from our digital ecosystem, but cream. also advocates for consumer privacy and enforcement of privacy laws. The balance then for brands is to make sure they don't reach into our privacy and don't look like harassers.
Do you think there is a world where you can have both so that a consumer can protect? their data and have their privacy and still have ads and an online experience that is relevant to them. I hope so. While it's not perfect, I think the goal of many smart advertising brands is to continue to enrich that experience, not hijack it, and it's not just your email, but also your phone number, which allows companies to text you and target you for ads, and the more your phone number is available, the greater the chances that you could be part of a data breach that would make you a bigger target for robocalls. and spam messages, and like mailing lists, it can also be difficult to keep track of monthly subscriptions, which can easily add up, but there are some simple steps you can take to reduce your expenses.
We all have that list of subscriptions we are paying for. From TV and music streaming to meal plans and fitness apps, it's HBO Max Netflix and Hulu Spotify. I believe gym memberships are automatically charged each month whether we remember them or not, and as the Wall Street Journal recently reported, they add up to a 2022 survey that respondents estimated. I spent $86 a month on subscriptions, the actual average amount was $219 and it was a lot more for Lakeisha Mosley, the pandemic really put us all on edge financially until I was trying to set a budget, she found a lot of forgotten subscriptions and I I'm like, Oh my God, I'm paying for this and I'm paying for that, including a recurring class pass membership that was costing him about a thousand dollars a year.
I could count on one hand by the time I signed up, maybe once or twice Mosley ran up over 700 a month in subscription charges and ended up canceling more than half as many subscribers as she says that's enough cancellations for Netflix Hulu HBO Max and others Increased around fifty percent in 2022 compared to the previous year our subscriptions are one of those easy things to forget about because they are absolutely automatic, their subscriptions are very often small amounts, so a Sometimes we forget about them five dollars six dollars twelve dollars a month and a rule proposed by the Federal Trade Commission would crack down on companies that request them to make canceling as easy as it was to sign up, they must tell you how long the period is test.
Clearly, they must tell you when you need to cancel. The FTC's plan is now available for public comment, in the meantime, there is a variety. of apps that can help you track spending and flag subscriptions you may have forgotten I realized I was paying for two Netflix accounts and two Spotify accounts Dustin Hensley used the Rocket Money app to identify duplicate payments and a mysterious 300 annual fee that you received refunded, what advice would you give to other consumers after going through your experience? Pay attention, you'll get nickels and dimes, it's Death By A Thousand Cuts. If you don't want to use another app to track your subscriptions, you can streamline your payments to make them easier.
To keep track, for example, use your most used credit or debit card and set alerts on your phone for when those charges arrive, then you'll find that you'll be reminded that you're still paying for subscriptions and it will still become a preparation that your household can pay. Get it off the market faster and at the price you're asking or even more Below, the tricks to make your home a desirable property when confidential consumer returns thanks foreigner welcome back it's a tough market for home buyers and sellers in Right now with high mortgage rates causing a drop in sales, but staging your home can make a difference and the right changes can even cause your home to sell for above asking price.
The best part is that you don't have to spend a fortune. All the world is a stage, including your house. When it comes time to sell, with sales of existing homes down nearly 23 percent from last year, some homeowners are now opting to set the stage for potential buyers by giving their spaces a small makeover before putting them on the market. , we organized the main living areas and also did a lot of repainting. of walls but, more importantly, Mass massively tidied up the home, from a fresh coat of paint and unobstructed windows to updated furniture and floor coverings, a recent survey found that 81 percent of buyer agents said staging made it easier for the buyer to visualize a property as their future home.
In a way, we have to move the seller a little to help the buyer feel like he can move. Stacy Esser, a real estate agent in New Jersey who runs her own staging company, says that most homes don't need a complete renovation to attract buyers; small changes can generate a big return; sellers spend an average of 400 to 600 in staging, you've seen it time and time again that when you put in a little initial investment it increases the selling price of the house, but you will actually sell your house for more money each time. Homes staged by Essers also sell faster this listing under contract in one weekend for one hundred twenty-six thousand dollars over the asking price and when the average home spent 160 days on the market in your neighborhood the owner of this home staged by Esser says he accepted an offer in less than a month what today's buyer is looking for so today's buyer is looking for more flexible spaces open floor plans lots of storage places to work from home where they can exercise and more casual spaces to spend time in family.
Esther says that wherever the eye lands the sale begins, you really want to help the buyer. Visualize yourself in that space, the most important rooms to organize the living room, the master bedroom and the kitchen. So this is a house that will go on the market this weekend. Esser will take us on a tour of the spectacular before and after of this house. One of the things we start with is to always remove the heavy curtains from the windows and let in the sunlight. This would be a formal living room recently painted a neutral color before its transformation into a more informal flex space.
Tell me what you did here. First of all, I think what we did was make the room look much larger and created multiple spaces. seating areas in this really large space, what can be done in the kitchen to tidy it up and make it more attractive to buyers? So one of the easiest things we can do is basically help a seller order a kitchen. Esther's recipe for a kitchen ready for the market. counters replace bulky furniture and dress it up with pops of color using items you already have in your refrigerator or pantry, you really livened up the kitchen, yes we totally did it, it's very expensive and anyone could do this, it's really just vegetables, so we like to use them. this cookbook to make it look like someone was here cooking and just changing the table made a big difference.
You pair the round table with a pop of white and it really brightens the space and the team above at Esser turned this den into a kid's room. Bedrooms Bedrooms help sell homes When it comes to staging it's not just what's on the inside that counts. First impressions matter too. Don't forget the outside. Make sure your home has curb appeal. Flowers should be planted outside. People should trim their hedges. The people should. Make sure your lawn is well maintained. Simple touches to help prepare your home for Showtime. Esser says the best time to sell is when interest rates drop.
She recommends that, if she is thinking of selling, start your decluttering process now, i.e. withdraw. Family photos like this look at how clean and clear it looks below, you'll want to remove the curtains to allow more natural light in those windows, it makes a big difference and if you have busy wallpaper you'll want to change it to a neutral color, maybe paint it to liven it up and clean up your home. All of this will help interested buyers imagine themselves living in your space. That's our moment for now. Thank you so much for staying tuned to all of us at NBC News. m Vicki Nguyen foreign I've been coming here for years and if there's one thing I know it's that the city of Baltimore takes its trash seriously.
I love Baltimore crabs this is the starting line of crabs and I've been eating crabs since the time you could sit at a table it's kind of spicy salty and savory all in one if I could describe the taste you can , you just have to try it, you just have to try it, it's time to get out of Studio 1A and hit the road for a new kind of culinary adventure follow me as I try some of the country's most iconic foods and meet the families behind them . Together we will learn how good food has the power to connect us with our past, our future and each other.
When you think of Maryland, you have to think that blue crab is an essential part of the state's culture and cuisine, and no place knows how to cook it like Baltimore. I mean, as many ways as you can count, you can find ways to eat crab, of course there is your basic is your steamed crab with beautiful spices and you just start hitting that bad boy, you can get all that beautiful meat out, you can get canned crab if you want, of course, there's also the fabulous crab macaroni and cheese with a hot dog, there's the crab dip, there's the crab soup, and of course, the king of crab, the crab cake, yes, but This is a cake that doesn't need frosting.
Crab cakes have been enjoyed by many for centuries throughout the Chesapeake region, but here in Baltimore they are a way of life and one of the city's most popular spots is hidden inside the world-famous Lexington Market. Today we returned to Houston and wanted to eat the best crab cake in town. We are from Orlando, we are happy to be here. people have chosen their favorites for years, yes, since I was little and I'm 25 years old. People from all over the world come to Baltimore just to get a bite of the famous fataly crab cake, which is made with fresh Maryland crab and family. love, they all look the same, how are you, dear?
Hello, hello, how are you sir, you look good, is that something for you, there you go, there you go, you need one of those, there you are, I'm feeling very grumpy now. Sorry, I have to get a lawyer because there is a clause that I must have checked. I've known the folks at Fatly Seafood for years, but they've been serving fresh crab cakes longer by purchasing Feedly. My own family. Seafood has been in my family for four generations with the fifth coming up, so we've been around a long time. I think people are surprised to see my parents, ages 84 and 89, still working to make a second batch if necessary. with them people ask him for an autograph, they ask him for a photo, they ask him about all his babies, it's so much fun, I mean, here's this company that's been a part of Baltimore for over 130 years, right?
And because? What is it about your place that keeps people coming back? right, I think it's just that people walk in here and they leave immediately there's a warmth there it's like walking into someone's house and they're happy to have you, you know, you come and you feel, oh my gosh, I feel at home. and I understand people, we were here 20 years, it's exactly the same, in fact Faidley is still in its original location founded here by John W. Faidley Sr. in 1886. It started as a seafood stand, but as generations passed became a Baltimore tradition led by Bill and Nancy Devine.
Together with her daughter Damihan and I we are the fourth generation of families, so I do everything: go here, fillet a fish here, buy an oyster there, steam a crab, come back here, fry here, make a cake of crab. the phone working in the shipping department, but a tray like that is about uh, let me see one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight bushels of crafts to get that tray, which is a lot of work and I don't think Let people realize how. It takes a lot of work to get a giant bulge when you grow up.
Did you think you were going to end up here? You were going to do this no, no, but it was hard to get away from him and I couldn't see him disappear. I couldn't see it ending with my parents, so the pandemic hit. Yes, you really had to step up. My father called me and I told him: Dad, you guys can't come here. They know we don't know anything about this virus. the effects especially on older people and I know you want to be here but you can't and he said, Jamie do everything you can to make payroll.
He makes me cry when I think about it. um he said just make sure we don't have to fire anyone I don't want to fire anyone I don't want anyone to lose their job and we did I saw it and I came here in the '90s and I still

it today I'm really a fan oh , okay, I did and it's funny because I often tell people that mom and dad don't treat employees any different than how they treat me and that's why you end up having so many multi-generation families staying here, that's right, Faidley's is It's not just a family business, it's run by a family and also several generations of employees, father and daughter, father and son, mother and daughter, they all build a house here.
I've been here since I was a junior in high school so I've been doing the thing for a while a week before my son was born I started at 14 and I'll be 42 and December it's always a challenge working with a family with many personalities but they love each other and it always works, they know it. always works well what's really bad is when your kids are grandmas well we were in the middle of the day oh you just barged in you have to start over yeah you were saying about the challenges of working with family in some levels, you know?
While the family spirit makes customers feel at home, it's Bailey's crab cakes that keep them coming back. What type of oil do you cook your soy crab cakes with? Thank you and I see people for the first time put it in their mouth and they say Oh my God! God, and they are standing at a table in a market, they are not sitting in front of a white tablecloth and having someone serve them on a silver tray and therefore on a paper plate, but it belongs on a tray of silver. Nancy created the recipe for her in 1987.
She says she has never changed it, so besides you, how many other people know the recipe for Crab Cake of Destiny? He doesn't even know how to make a cup of coffee, why would I tell him? Some people use breadcrumbs, you use crunchy, salty, yes and no. It's not good because you have to use more, yeah, and then this is the magic song, this is the secret sauce, yeah, so just mix the ingredients well, nothing more, that's right and a big crab ball right there, boom, hey, look at this, oh. boy, it was like I remember reading it 26 years ago, what they told me that all the time, when people come here, the best part of this is that you haven't changed anything now, this is a legacy, well, we know what the crabs. they finish, but how do they get them?
Let's discover the next generations of black boatmen who have made a living fishing Maryland's most famous fishery. Thank you, foreigner. The men and women of the Chesapeake Bay who work these waters are probably as famous as the legendary catch they make, and in fact, it is backbreaking work that is passed down from generation to generation, including the blackjacks, those were the black boatmen who have worked in these waters since the 19th century and are a vital part of this community. The Chesapeake Bay is home to a wide variety of seafood, but none as valuable or well-known as the blue crab.
The catch here represents more than a third of the national supply and, on average, more than 50 million pounds of blue crabs are caught in the bay. I'm Captain Tyrone Meredith, I'm trying to oust the captain, owner and operator of the island, Queen as well. Captain Meredith knows these waters well, he grew up in them. I'm the fourth generation, uh, Waterman and my great-grandfather, he worked on the water, my grandfather and my father, we've been here since the 1860s, making a living working on the Chesapeake Bay, this has been the way of life Generations of fishermen here in Kent Narrows, a town just 50 miles south of Baltimore, have for hundreds of years caught processed fish. and sold blue crabs to East Coast markets in the mid- to late 19th century.
Kent Narrows had also become one of many unlikely refuges in the bay for free and enslaved African Americans. There were more black sailors anywhere on the entire East Coast. Probably in the United States, those boatmen also known as blackjacks forged their way to Liberation on the water; Their expertise is essential to the burgeoning fishing industry, to the point that the government granted some black boatmen Siemens protection certificates that grant sailors American citizenship and a path to economic freedom. Hi Lewis, I'm coming to you now, okay, you had a bike back in the day, this is wellness ahead, you're your own boss and you get what you want to do and don't let anyone tell you, go get me this and that.
Lewis Carter, 75, still finds that same sense of freedom in the water today. He is also one of the last generations of black sailors who live every morning before the sun rises. He sets out to fish for crabs in the bay. I started in 1961. Now for 15. and I've been at it ever since. Now I'm going down the line and when I get to the other end I'll throw it. All the clams will come up to that bait and the water pressure will push them in. this Dipper is fine, these are the big males, you put them in a basket, that is a female with red claws, put them in a basket, he wanted, the last Mohicans left, there are not many people left who still work, Mega lives off the water , most moved away. all jobs and it's changing because it's harder to make a living on the bank crabbing season runs from spring to late fall changes in climate and labor costs have made each successive year more challenging as younger generations take up new trades there are fewer people working the waters and ultimately fewer black boatmen when I started it was a black water planet but they died out and the younger ones never took the place where it has been .
It makes me feel bad somehow, you know, and I don't believe it. There won't be any chance. I truly believe that Captain Meredith estimates that there are less than a dozen black sailors in the bay, like many of his shipmates. I had to take another job when I was crabbing as a teenager. I caught up to 50 bushels a day at this time, the crab catches two or three bushels a day. Now I started going on fishing charters because crabbing started to decline and fishing in the US was more lucrative. His wise and educational Letters are an opportunity to keep the stories of blackjack alive for generations to come, although the tradition in these waters is changing.
One thing remains the same. Nothing tastes like Maryland crab from the Chesapeake Bay. It has a certain flavor to it in the unique place of it. so in the world it's Chesapeake Bay bluegrass next foreigner an up-and-coming Baltimore chef inspired by his family's love of cooking thank you foreigner thank you foreigner Baltimore a new generation is putting a spin on crab cake I'm Alex Perez I'm the owner of Poppy Cuisine. I'm an artist at heart, so cooking the culinary arts, you know, that's something I'm very passionate about, not necessarily having a recipe to follow and just getting into the kitchen with style and creating a huge piece is that freestyle approach that It draws people through these doors clamoring for a taste.
Crab is king in Baltimore, so you'll see crab cakes, crab cakes, French fries, crab cakes, egg rolls, so everyone's gone crazy for it too. the ball so I just come back for that and I enjoy it every time I come here, we actually live in DC so we traveled here an hour just to come here right now. I'm drizzling our Warhead and our aioli sauces. I have a family from the Dominican Republic. I am Afro-Latino. I'm black on my mother's side and I pretty much, like always, love food and, uh, cooking food, eating food, so I learn to cook from my dad.
Dad taught me how to cook at the age of 10. I grew up, you know, I also watched my grandmother cook a lot, so I started combining the foods that I learned to cook for my grandmother with the foods that I learned to cook for my father and that's how all the poppy cuisine that you know was born in her kitchen, essentially, that was eight years ago, while working full-time, Alex began building a new business in addition to serving food in his grandmother's kitchen in In February 2020, he was finally able to open a restaurant and then the pandemic hit, of course, you know, a month later we got the news that we have to close and only do takeout, so the floodgates essentially opened and you have people standing. lined up hundreds of people on the Block in that mass, you know, cars double parked up and down the streets and it was just done it was chaos during a global crisis the city that Alex was born and raised in they rallied around She now poppies The kitchen is packed with locals and tourists alike, but the chef stays true to his roots and runs it with family and close friends.
My little sister Natasha, my older brother Alex. I can employ family, friends, etc., you know the people I grew up with. I am close and it is very rewarding. You know, I'm going to grab my apron and join Alex and Grandma Gloria for a lesson in cooking crab. Foreigner Foreigner Foreigner I wanted to meet Alex and his grandmother Gloria, the inspiration behind their cooking, so I stopped by their kitchen to say hello, well, I know I took it from my grandmother, my mother-in-law and, um, just to put my own spin on it to certain dishes, I did not follow the recipe to the letter, were you able to add levels?
Yes, but he always asked me when I fixed the plate what did you put in this, how did you do it, how did you do this and I told him you don't have to follow by the letter, you know, put your own spin on it and Alex has done just that, turning the classic crab cake into egg roll genius. The ingredients are simple, a pound of jumbo crab, Panko breadcrumbs, egg roll wrappers with aged cheddar cheese and a couple of sauces and microgreens to top it off, there's the star of the sampler the crab meat, put on an apron, I got rubber gloves, all right, patience, done, so how do we start?
Alex, okay, so the first thing you want to do is say we have Maryland giant crab here, so for the most part it's It's going to have a lot of shelves, but I usually like to look through them, I just have to see if there are shells and if so , you can put the shells back into that container. Yes, Gloria, did you know you were helping raise a culinary genius? Well, no. I know you'd like to eat this sauce, particularly like our crab sauce mix, so we're going to drizzle on a little at a time because I don't want to put too much on, just enough to come together, yeah, I like this lady.
That's why I'm so particular about, you know, when I'm doing things in the kitchen trying to start rolling these things. Why do you think this recipe is so popular at the restaurant? The most popular. Well, I think because. It pretty much gives you the ability to take a lot more favors than you think, make it portable and while you're traveling, you know it was pulling your hands, yeah exactly, so I think that's one of the main reasons why it's very popular, plus test too, you know, yeah, exactly, come back for it, yeah, so what we're gonna do is, uh, we're gonna take like a pinch of shit, it's like a quarter cup or so, they're gonna sit too in the middle. a lot, yeah, you want to take out a little bit, careful, I actually want to put a little bit more in, yeah, which is okay, so that's perfect, that's perfect, perfect and we want to literally fold them into envelope styles.
What is it about? cooking and family are very important, yeah, that's what it is for me, you know, living a busy life as a business owner, father, husband and things like that. I feel like food is an opportunity for family to come together, you know? Things especially if they haven't seen each other in a long time. You know it's a way to connect. So is it true that you've never done this before? No, I haven't. It's true, I could have been fooled if you had never done this. before, look at that bam done faster than me oh, that's a natural thing for grandma, I love it, so now let's bring the deep fryer in here and fry these bad boys, yeah, we absolutely had to describe the heart of your kitchen.
Is it and how is it that Baltimore, uh, it's kind of part of my story. I think that connects really well to our Baltimore, you know, because you know I grew up here, you know my whole life and I think everything that I faced during that time. which you know, I started this company until now. I've been transparent about the pain, it resonated really well with the people of Baltimore and if you saw my journey over the years and I feel like that's really the heart of what I made sure to impress the edges and stuff like that, that's why I keep giving you the flip, you know, so that it doesn't apply too much on one particular side and just want to fry, oh, nice golden brown, so you want. cut them on a diagonal, so I'm going to drizzle this is our homemade aioli sauce and this is our Warhead sauce right here, so the sauce is a little bit sweet, it's got a hint of heat, like Gloria, that's right, yeah, there's a thing to do Yeah, yeah, crab cake roll, here we go, wow, Chef, how could you have done that?
Baltimore pride, thank you all. Our time here in Baltimore is coming to an end. We tried the traditional crab cake. We tried a modern twist with crab cake egg rolls and even went straight on. to the source in the Chesapeake Bay at the center of it all one thing that keeps ringing real food tastes better when you eat it as a family alright guys welcome to Boost where we start your morning with some positive vibes feel good stories that They will leave you. you with a smile, so let's start with one that is out of this world.
Read about the astronauts who will embark on a historic journey to the Moon early this week. NASA announced the four astronauts who will participate in that historic Artemis 2 mission. And for the first time in more than 50 years, NASA will send a crew to orbit the Moon. It's a 250,000-mile journey that will set up future missions deeper in space. Here's what Commander Reed Wiseman told our Tom Costello about carrying on an important legacy. None of us were born when Gene Cernan and Jack Schmidt left lunar service in 1972 and our agency talks a lot now about the Artemis generation and we are proud to be part of the Artemis generation, we are the Artemis generation and we are going back to the Moon and we feel very honored to have with us this morning Commander Reed Weissman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist, Christina hammock cook and mission specialist, Jeremy Hansen, guys, good morning, congratulations, thank you, this is great, this background and having them here, commander.
Do you realize when you think about this, you are going to inspire an entire generation again? I remember sitting here with my family when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon around 11pm. You'll be going around in circles. This is really a real moment for us, we call it The Artemis Generation that we are going to go for the kids right now that are in school promoting that, motivating them in stem, no matter what direction they choose to go. nation, our world needs teachers, it needs doctors, it needs nurses, it needs engineers, it needs veterinarians and all of that is really important to us.
Al, it's a complete honor to be able to do this and hopefully inspire the world right now. I mean part of the mission is as we understand it, it's going to help establish this long-term presence on the Moon and then on Mars as well, how will we know if the mission is going well? What are the indicators we are looking for? for that, the spaceship comes back, that's number one, yeah, on top of that, yeah, so along the way you'll get updates from Mission Control, which they'll actually be broadcasting and we'll have some people making announcements about how the mission is going. and they will provide you with updates. and they can even get live shots of the crew and the outside from cameras around the spacecraft.
That is incredible. It's great. This is the closest I'll ever get to true greatness, but I heard a rumor that you guys might. not being so good at being on time is at least fair to me, so tell me the story about when you found out you were going to be on this mission and how we were late for the meeting, well, you both had a different excuse. of our calendars for this meeting and then yeah, uh, two of us three who showed a sword, one for nothing, yeah, we had no idea what was coming, so when you came in, I mean, was it clear that you were late for immediately?
As if they were about to tell you, wait, congratulations, you're going to space, you're good. Yes, they were about to give us the news about the crew announcement and who had been chosen. We had no idea what was coming. I'm not sure, of course, until that we heard the words, but when we walked into that room and saw our boss and our boss's boss, we knew we were connected to the wrong meeting, something as important as video chat and I see my boss. boss I see Victor I see Christina I was like Oh, so Christina, we showed this photo of you earlier on the show This is when you were just a little girl look at this photo You were at Space Camp I was How old were you?
I remember probably high school and look at you now, what do you think that little girl would think of the woman here on this couch? Memory. I loved wearing that blue suit at space camp. It was the coolest thing for me and I never thought about. that would really happen. I took a very unconventional path to get here, but it was important to me to follow my passions. That is incredible. That is the message I would share. What trip! Yes, and Víctor talked about Travel the last time we chatted in the third. time you just completed this historic six month time in space you celebrated your birthday in space this one is going to be a little shorter 10 days huh how are the two going to compare?
Do you think well as you said this will be? much shorter but we're going to go much faster, you know, when we get the go-ahead for translunar injection, uh, we'll go about seven miles per second, the speed that will take us to the moon, but it's really interesting because that's the same fire that will take us back to Earth and the Pacific Ocean safely, we will not have a space station that we will go to, the spaceship in which we will travel to the Moon is where we will be all the time testing. life support systems, room, exercise, food, bathing and so on, Paramount Jeremy, what are you most excited about about the mission?
I think we're all very excited about international collaboration and, as Reid said, just inspiring the world and trying to bring people together. together is an amazing example of great American leadership to help other countries create space for others to shine and contribute and that is we have global problems on this planet right now and we need global solutions and this will be a shining example. of how we can do better as a human race here and Jeremy, you are the pride of Canada. So yeah, thanks, yeah, I know, I mean, it really highlights the work of the reed space agency, but to show Canadians what the whole country can achieve, it's a great photo that's very good for you guys , congratulations, yes, congratulations, what were you about to say?
I was going to say that he is the pride of our team, he looks a little like Buzz Lightyear. I said before that you couldn't have chosen a more beautiful box straight from central I was about to say Central Casting I can't wait to see the Artemis action figures too thank you very much you are very proud of you thank you congratulations on a mission to the Moon to an astronaut reaching for the stars Peggy Whitson coming out of retirement to fly into space again Kate Snow has her story, this is actually what the interior model of astronaut Peggy Whitson is showing me what no news team has seen before inside the engineering building Axiom Space.
A mockup of a module for the first commercial space station in 63 Whitson has spent more time in space than anyone else in the United States We orbit the Earth approximately once every 90 minutes The first female commander of the International Space Station completed 10 spacewalks nic-3217 when we met four years ago he had retired from NASA what you have left, hopefully, space again I remember you clearly he said I would really like to come back but I'm not quite sure how and now here you are, yes, fortunately there is a way, with the development of commercial space, there are many opportunities available now that she has leveraged her years of experience at NASA for Axiom space as director of human spaceflight, she will now be the first female commander of a space mission private Axiom Mission 2.
You never really wanted to retire, not really not. I love going to space. Actually, it's where I've always been. I felt at home in terms of knowing what job to do and I'm actually pretty good at it, so it works in coordination with NASA. She will lead a four-person team for the 10-day, privately funded mission to the International Space Station. Her in-orbit research will help Axiom build a more modern commercial space station that would replace the current one. It's very exciting to be a part of that liftoff scheduled for Sunday on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Whitson's advice continues to push your limits.
You're still absolutely challenging yourself a little bit outside of your comfort zone. Yes, definitely. I think one of the most important messages for success is to challenge yourself and not just do what you know you can do because you are capable of doing more than you know, Kate. Snow NBC News Houston Coming up to introduce you to The Man Behind a Mindfulness Movement right after the foreign break Welcome back to Boost Meet mindfulness author and podcast host Kenny. He is helping people lead more intentional and purposeful lives through simple things. steps we can all learn from Chanel Jones has that story.
I joke that I'm a man who shares feelings for a living, that's the title I prescribe to myself for everything, so how does one become a mindfulness author? It was just one of those moments in life where I thought I'd be really unfortunate if I looked back in 10, 20, 30 years and realized I was doing things, hanging out with people who were working in a career that I really wasn't. true to me in a way, so K started The New Mindset featuring the podcast in 2018, a place where you could challenge yourself to solvetheir daily problems. I realized what he was doing, which was practicing mindfulness.
You know, he intimidated me a little bit, but it's basically just the art. of being present and free to judge himself to be able to find Clarity in some way as he continued to post, case's listeners grew and with the podcast now totaling over 30 million downloads, since then, case has used his platform to challenge others to speak out and express their opinion. own mental health at the top of the list I love the focus on mental health conversations around mental health, it has our culture and our existence and I like to see more men approaching this so I'm excited inside a couple of years of seeing how many people are practicing their own form of mindfulness, so the fact that it's been so successful, did you expect that the fact that it's resonated with so many people and continues to resonate with so many people is really Surprising, but I think it speaks to the broader picture? need, culture and society that I think a lot of people really want to do these things, but they don't necessarily know how to start and they need a First Step that they can relate to and want to give people that first step, guided journals with titles created with cases . like no hassles but first inner peace and even single is your superpower keeping a journal is so powerful because it brings a thought from your mind to your hand in a pen on paper it's called your latest book that's bold of you to let go of what you You're not came out of a lot of comments from people who listen to my podcast and they basically have something to the extent that I feel like I'm too much or too difficult, so I called the book that's bold of you because it's a Bold thing to do is reject labels. that they gave us a few years ago.
She also began posting his words of wisdom on Instagram. I've become known as a quote, so I realized there's power in writing these silly little ones. quotes that put them in Chicago or Miami or New York and just remind people of these things that we intuitively know, but maybe hearing them in a different way, maybe hearing them said in a slightly different version, that's what makes them fast. and have clicked with over 480,000 followers, including the likes of Lucy Hale, Haley Bieber and Viola Davis. I'm also impressed with how creative you are. I think, oh, a cup of coffee, that's a good place, right there, I thought, what are the things that we touch and feel, so I started writing on coffee cups and then I said, well, yeah, a couple. of more things to say, so I need a little more surface area, so I started writing on paper, but just in case, the reward is making a difference in the lives of others.
People have said that my words changed their lives or helped them get out of an unhealthy relationship or find their soulmate or just be happier, which of course I can't take credit for, you know they're the ones. They do, but hearing things like that is It's so powerful. I think it's an incredible thing to witness next. Former NFL athlete Ryan Mundy talks about his own mental health journey and how he inspired him to help others take a look. I fulfilled my dream in my hometown and I won a Super Bowl there, and I've made money and I have insurance and I have all these things at my disposal and I'm still not okay.
Ryan Monday, an eight-year NFL veteran, knows something about playing with heart that he didn't know. What he knew was how to deal with everything that was going on inside his head. How did you get into football? I started playing soccer at the age of seven after being an All-American at his high school in Pittsburgh. Ryan played Four Seasons at the University of Michigan and then one season. in West Virginia before the NFL came calling in 2008. It's pretty rare for someone to be drafted by their hometown team. It was quite surreal. I used to go to Three Rivers Stadium and get donations for my Pop Warner football team and watch the players.
Arriving in their luxurious cars I thought that one day that would be me. Ryan became a Super Bowl champion with the Steelers in 2009 and went on to play six more seasons in the game, including one with the New York Giants and two as a Chicago Bear. Being a professional athlete, we all know the discipline it takes, yeah, and then of course there's the physical aspect, there's also the mental aspect, yeah, what kind of toll did the game take on that part of Ryan? On Monday I developed a really high level. pain tolerance and being in uncomfortable situations and that's great, but then we have to recognize that I'm not well or that I don't feel like myself and in that sport hypermasculinity is sometimes a difficult conversation to have.
I've heard that. Many times NFL players face a bit of an identity crisis when they decide to hang up their cleats. What was your experience pretty much the same, but the NFL offers these Executive Education programs that I was taking advantage of? I even got an MBA at the University of Miami, Florida, while I was an active athlete, I was dealing with anxiety, I was dealing with depression, I was dealing with identity issues and I was smiling on the outside, but I was struggling on the inside and also during this time my family was going through a list of chronic conditions.
So I reflected on my exposure to the venture capital space, where a lot of money is flowing to solve big problems, and I didn't see any money flowing to solve my problem or the problem my family was going through in October 2020, Ryan. launched Alchemy, a mental health platform designed to meet the needs of the Black community, why is there such a glaring gap in the mental health care space for the Black community? Finding culturally intelligent care people who can understand your experience is a really challenging proposition, less than four per cent of psychologists or black, less than two per cent of psychiatrists or black, but also supporting mental health and wellbeing is very expensive.
Alchemy aims to level the playing field of mental health practices by offering content from meditations to relationship courses and more from seeking clinical experts. Like him, I think we've reached a point where we talk about the need for therapy and the reality is that many people who need to do it, don't have insurance or don't have a job, first of all, can do it. Go out for an hour in the middle of the day or can they afford it on a normal day on their luxury visa, how do you fix that? We think about innovative approaches like, well, what do we call therapy?
There are things that can be therapeutic but are not necessarily therapy. Changing deeply held ideas about mental health may be harder than playing professional football, but Ryan is hopeful you'll have two children. I have two sons. One of the things that always worries me is that I look good on the outside, but I don't know what's going on here, how do you make sure your kids are mentally healthy? Yes, talking to them, they didn't get a chance to see me as an active NFL athlete, but now they again have a front row seat to see what happens.
It seems to be a black entrepreneur in America, right, and I particularly have to walk the walk and like I meditate with my kids, I talk openly about my kids, we make sure they have the things they need to be the best. and the highest version of themselves is still ahead, we are traveling to Long Island in New York to visit a very special summer camp, stay with us abroad, thank you, thank you, welcome back to Boost. Our next story comes from New Jersey, Buddy's home. Baseball is an inspiring league that welcomes players with special needs and adds a whole new meaning to the word team.
Joe Fryer has the story. Baseball has always been considered a team sport, but in Bayonne, New Jersey, it takes on a whole new flesh. What is the best part? baseball hits the ball, let's go this way, okay, Pete Amadeo was the city recreation superintendent, the guy who made this league for special needs kids, a success, you got this step in the third step in the third. That's cool, they call it buddy baseball because the players are along with volunteers who help them round the bases when they come here. I was surprised by the number of people there were on the field, which really makes the community feel good, friend Basil is 100.
Community, everyone comes out, the entire camp knows what friends baseball is and the support we provide. It's amazing Marcon, you got it, man, good job, university, Colin Girvis and his father, Chris, is a game changer. It's a wonderful way to bring these kids together and build lasting friendships. How many successes do you have? Do you have many successes? Two successes. today what it feels like to take all those hits since the friends of this day come from the town's high school teams and the fire department is when one of my favorite days of the year so far just the enthusiasm that these people bring just to Look at the smiles on their faces as they meet you all over the place and then they will finally hit home.
Oh, that's a great spot and that's what every player gets hit with every time and eventually comes home. Good job Mariah, I didn't see it. no one ever gets out no one ever makes it out we're all safe that's an important word sure we're all safe and when you come to the field you know we feel safe with each other here we go one two three that inclusion means a lot to Maddie Klein and her mom: you want the best for your kids and you want them to be happy and you want people to see them the way you see them, to have an environment where they are celebrated for exactly who they are, that's probably the goal of most of us celebrating a sport where in place of the score is the community that counts two three with Summer Upon Us Joelle Gargulo is taking us to a very special summer camp on Long Island, it is called Camp Anchor and it is for children with special needs.
Run by an amazing staff and passionate volunteers, take a look if you've ever spent a day at Camp Anchor describing it as easy, the best place on Earth. I love it. Camp Baker is happy if you don't already realize there's energy in the air. Contagious spirit the moment the children and adults get off the bus it is pure joy they can let their guard down they can just be themselves they have different disabilities but the skills that shine Camp Anchor staff and its 275 volunteers spend their six weeks of summer leading and teaching over 750 campers, all with special needs, this is my 30 second summer, what do you like most?
They are the children. Just coming here and seeing their smiles is what really changes your perspective on things and makes you realize what's important. a range of ages of campers um six two when you can stay as long as you want give me an idea of what's going on day to day here you can dance you have sports drama fitness homec host has been serving this Long Island, New York community for more 50 years old. There is a special bond here and it really is and in the words of this campus, it is a magical place to be and its heart goes out to its campers like 11-year-old Gavin Sands, who was born with Down syndrome.
Gavin is truly our greatest joy, it is our fourth children's camp. Anchor is a place where I know he is safe, he has been given so many opportunities to shine and develop his confidence, we feel happy, we feel blessed and grateful, thank you, the things he does here allow him to see what he can, can do. anything and for camp sandsAnchor is a family affair I have been working here for six years this is my second summer here this is my first summer What is it like when you see your brother at camp? I love seeing Gavin at camp.
I always run up to him and give him a hug, it's so nice to be in a place where we're all together and Gavin is so accepting and he's so inclusive. This camp inspires so many people, so I would pursue the field of special education as my profession. In fact, I'm getting so I want to literally be here for the rest of my life when Gavin gets home and you say, "Okay, tell me about your day at Camp Anchor today." What is a typical response? I had the best day ever and that's how it is every day that Gavin and his volunteer partner Katya, enjoy, can I hang out with you?
Yes, let's go full of music, some yoga with animals and the main event of surfing, how do you feel when you are in this airport? I'm glad to know your son has a place like this to go to what? That means for you two, it's like he's family to him from the very day he got here, it's like he's home. I mean, this is home for them. The anchor is my second family. You come here and you have that feeling that I'm accepted. Know? I'm allowed to be here, there's a quote when you walk in that says to the world you can be one person but to one person you can be the world and I think that captures the essence of this beautiful camp that allows these campers to form amazing friendships not only with other campers but also with the staff, volunteers, administration and form these friendships and memories that they will treasure foreverthat's right after the break foreign foreign welcome back to Boost we have one more video and we promise I'll put a smile on your face.

This is shopping all day. buzzing on social media Hello, I'm a chassis post and we're back today with a new episode of shopping all day about those products we've seen on social media and wondering whether to add to cart. Well, we complete our favorite trend items. from lip gloss, yes it's making a comeback to flared leggings which are also popular again, and remember, see that QR code in the corner of your screen, you can use your smartphone camera to scan it and get instant access to products from today's show or you can tap buy on the number below to buy all the products that we will share with you today, so let's get started.
Watermelon has been a mega trend when it comes to beauty products and we have seen everything related to watermelon taking social media by storm, now watermelon sleeping masks are on the top of the social media heap and few masks to sleep have received as much hype as the glow recipe, the watermelon glow sleeping mask, is a Tick-Tock star in its own right with over 2.2 million views and fans say it's worth it, but I have to do it . I'm telling you, this sleeping mask got me hooked on the word sleep. I mean, who doesn't love a product that works when you go to bed and the brand says that this product is not only designed to help your skin feel softer but it also helps? to refine pores and they also say it helps brighten the skin and also exfoliate, plus it has an impressive list of ingredients including real watermelon extract and even hyaluronic acid and ahas which is actually glycolic acid and I have to tell you it smells so well it's like fresh watermelons and this product is not just a social media star, it's a star in real life, yes it has 73,000 likes on sephora.com.
Well, now get ready for another Tick Tock star to obsess beauty lovers. with Dior Addict lip gloss oil and this cult and

celebrity

favorite has a hashtag with over 73 million views and climbing and lip gloss are making a huge comeback and this ultra-shiny gloss has been selling out everywhere and this is what excites everyone. It's a multitasker, it's like a lip gloss and a lip care product all in one, and the brand says that the lip oil is infused with cherry oil, so it nourishes, protects and softens the lips. lips while adding a natural color finish.
In fact, the brand also says that the lip oil is formulated to suit all lip colors to bring out the unique, rosy shine of each one and, in my opinion, one of the reasons why the lip gloss is having such a big comeback is that we are seeing so much loss, I mean in the face. that's been a really big trend, that kind of bright trend, so it makes sense that it would transfer to the lips as well, so now let's talk about hair love, there's a lot of love for this next product, as well as its founder, these are the nourishing shine. jvn drops, brought to you by hair guru and television personality Jonathan Van Ness, and the brand is so popular that this brand's hashtag alone has over 10.8 million views and I love the positivity of Jonathan and his enthusiasm and the inclusive environment of the brand.
I also love what the brand has to say about the product, which makes your hair look like it's lit from within. I mean, buyers really love how these drops really add intense shine and if you have a minute, you'll have it. I have to watch the instructional videos on the site. Jonathan shows you exactly how to use this product and it's very easy. I mean, you just take a few drops and then you put it in your hands, you rub it together and he says take it. with your hands and just rub it in from the mid shaft to the ends and work your way through and Jonathan also says this can be used on all hair types and the brand says the product also helps smooth frizz and moisturize now.
Next, we have another affordable and trendy accessory that, in my humble opinion, has the ability to transform any outfit in an instant. Yes, the fitted pattern is having a big moment and we are seeing great traction not only from social media but also from the upper echelons. -end designers and what I like most about this trend is that you can participate in this designer runway style without the designer price tag. In fact, I've seen types of patterns from high-end designers from two hundred dollars to even twenty-five. hundred dollars, so forgive me if I get too excited because we have such affordable options here, so we have a selection of stockings here with really cool patterns, from a herringbone to a beautiful lace to a heart motif, and we're seeing a lot of the motifs.
Hearts are a big trend even on their own and my favorite way to wear them is to pair them with, say, last year's little black dress, and suddenly the look is transformed, updated. I love wearing them with pants especially shorts so I can see the kind of pattern peeking out and you know another really cool way to wear them you actually wear them with jeans and distressed jeans oh my gosh they look so cool you could see the tight pattern through some of the holes, it really is a Next, a little fashion trick that I love.
We have an OTS favorite who is making a big comeback. I call them yoga pants, but Gen Z has called them flared leggings, but one thing's for sure, whatever you call them, they're huge. Social media stars so let me introduce you to the Airy real me High Waist Criss-Cross Flare Leggings and this style is a double winner so not only does it have that great flared silhouette check it out but it has that crossover waistband that is has become so incredibly popular, that's why the brand says that these leggings are made from a fabric that they really need and they say that it has light support and that this fabric feels very buttery, so they are a really versatile leggings, you can wear them for hang, you can wear them in the gym. definitely wear it while doing yoga so i totally understand why they are so popular so now to take a look at spring let's talk about an incredibly popular shoe that encompasses four big viral trends in one.
This edit has been on the scene for a while now and thanks to its popularity both on social media and among celebrities, we don't see it going anywhere, so let me tell you what those four trends are. First of all, we have that mule style, the mule silhouette, which is really slip on and easy to wear, also check out these braided straps, the double strap they are also somewhat padded, so that's another big trend we're seeing Plus, the block heel is much easier to wear than the Stiletto, especially if we're transitioning from sneakers to another big trend we're seeing everywhere is this square toe sole and I really like all of these neutrals. sophisticated and are essentially a designer trap and lastly, I really think they look expensive, so this is a huge viral.
The trend to try soon this spring and the next must-have item is one of the coolest fashion items I've come across in a long time - it's the Nori Press and it's changed the game in both design and innovation, and it's no wonder which has over 1.4 million views on Tick Tock and is a wrinkle removal tool and is like a cross between an iron and a steamer and boy, I wish I had one of these when I started my career in fashion as an assistant a famous stylist. I can tell you that I have spent about 90 percent of my time steaming so I became well acquainted with conventional Steamers and I must tell you that almost all of them were leaked so I was excited to try the Nori and I think the design is Es so cool, I mean, look it almost looks like a straightening iron and it works like one too and one of the things I liked the most when I use it is that it is very easy and irons both sides of the fabric. at a time so you just clip it to the fabric and pull it down and oh my gosh it really is a game changer in the world of ironing and steaming.
You don't even need an ironing board, so I love that ease, plus it weighs 1.4 pounds. So it's great for traveling, you can throw it in your bag and go. Let's go over these products one more time and you can use the QR code to get instant access to these items. Food from all over the country and we will meet the families behind them together, we will learn how good food has the power to connect us with our past, our future and each other. Ah, we call this the Avocado Tunnel of Love here for the last 20 years. Believe it or not, avocado consumption has tripled in the United States today, the average American eats eight pounds of these babies every year. . I am in Rancho Vásquez, one of the oldest avocado orchards in the country, here the Vásquez family grows several different varieties, let's go to avocado. check it out oh welcome to Rancho Vásquez okay yeah nice to meet you Mr.
Damien Vásquez. The Army veteran basket art has turned his love of avocados into a true family obsession. Four generations live together on this scenic ranch, many of them working in the garden and helping out. I run the business. I have never been to an avocado farm. Wow, it will be so much fun. Guys, give me a tour. Alright, let's get to the art. Grandfather Refufio Morones moved to the US from Mexico in the 1920s, he picked avocados and citrus on various farms but always dreamed of having his own orchard when Art was seven years old, the family bought their first acre of this ranch and that's when my grandpa fufio started teaching me how to take care of trees, that's when I really started to love harvesting.
My brother and I picked the avocados, took the avocados to town, knocked on doors, sold the avocados, put his passion for produce on hold to pursue a career in the auto parts industry, in 2002 he was able to purchase the entire property, which It was meant to be bred for new homes, we have taken it from 250 trees down to 3753. This is something that is a sustainable legacy that I can leave here and teach my children, grandchildren of the family, how to work the Earth, how to grow things organically . Art had also saved a part of the Golden State's history.
Avocados are native to Mexico, but some of the first avocado trees in the U.S. were planted in Los Angeles County in the mid-1800s. Henry Dalton, a wealthy merchant who owned ranches in California, fell in love. With the fruit during his travels to Central America in 1848, Henry planted the first avocado tree in Azusa, so when he moved to Los Angeles, he took over and bought Rancho Azusa, he knew there was fresh water coming from the Azusa Canyon and, so, because it had the source of fresh water and the wonderful soil, he knew that avocados would be excellent here during a tour of the ranch.
I could see a living part of thathistory, making it a specialist one of the first avocado trees planted in the western United States. This pup is one. of a Kind is just like her and is still producing fruit, still producing between 500 and 6,700 pounds of fruit a year, experts estimate that this tree is over 100 years old and produces a type of avocado known as Fuerte in Spanish. Strong, it was the first variety of avocado to thrive in the United States because it can withstand colder temperatures, but in the 1920s a new variety emerged in Southern California that would eventually dominate the world market.
A guy named Rudolph Haas, he was actually a mailman. but his hobby was growing so he had an orchard at his house about 20 miles from here La Habra Heights the avocado in the house was a total accident a hobby farmer Rudolph had bought some mysterious avocado seeds when the tree ripened he was surprised by the dark, bumpy fruit It was produced and really took off commercially because it has a thicker skin, so for shipping purposes and is an amazing tasting fruit. The Fuerte and many other avocados remain green when ripe, but the skin on a Hass turned black when ripe, hiding any bruising.
It did not immediately disappear among consumers in the US, so it took some marketing campaigns. marketing to get Americans to adopt this creamy variety of the fruit, this quarter put a little green in its red, white and blue today by eighty percent. of the avocados grown worldwide are now here this is one of the first trees planted commercially Hoss had two host trees here until the 1990s most of the avocados consumed in the country were grown in California and were not available throughout the year, but that all changed in 1994. President Clinton made NAFTA the law of today, turning the United States with Canada and Mexico into one large trading bloc when NAFTA was passed, avocados from Mexico became available everywhere, and people could enjoy them anytime nowadays, he even named avocado toast as one of the top trends of the 2010s. avocado toast I'm not sure how this happened, but there came a time in the last 10 years when the People began to realize that their lives were not complete without them thanks to clever campaigns, new dietary trends and abundant supply.
Avocado consumption has skyrocketed in the last two decades and has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Now ninety percent of those avocados come from Mexico. However, this has caused significant environmental impacts such as deforestation. Rancho Vásquez wants to combat the negative effects of monoculture as an organic garden. They follow strict guidelines to help protect the earth. How have you treated the trees and what you grow to reduce the impact on the environment? We picked the weeds by hand. They're weeds because it's all organic, so we never spray any herbicides or anything like that. The deer come and eat all the lower leaves and edge the trees for us and turn it into natural compost.
Now when it comes to picking avocados, a gentle touch is required, so we still do it the same high-tech way we did 100 years ago. Wow and that's my Grandpa stick right here really yeah this is one of the old school ones so you can pick any of these you want so yeah just slide it up until the avocado comes in the basket and then you pull the rope, there you have it. You're almost there, pretty hard, you're doing pretty well, you know, a little further and then pull the rope, there you go, you did it, good job, these are, here's a catcher, there you go first, avocado, It will take a week. week and a half right now to ripen and let it soften, how about we go and try some?
Yes sir we picked some about a week or so so they were perfect for you okay let's do it thank you foreigner foreigner believe it or not there are over 400 varieties of avocados Rancho Vasquez in Azusa California sells six El Fuerte has Hass Reed lamb Pinkerton and Gem each have a different shape, flavor and growing season. I have never seen an avocado so round. Ranch avocados are highly prized by chefs and customers for their high oil content that comes from the nutrient-rich mountainous soil of the region's climate. area and secret agricultural techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation, the higher the oil content, the better the flavor of the fruit and the longer it will stay. green, you can taste and see the difference with their organic hats, it just keeps it really, you literally see the oil coming out of it, yeah, so if you want to try just a little piece, we'll give you a foreign little piece, the next family favorite .
Strong, oh, that's really, really, a different flavor, absolutely, absolutely, there's almost, it's almost like a salty, creamy flavor, apart from his wife's guacamole. Art's favorite way to eat avocados is actually with honey, it's called avocado. Sweet, that's a sweet avocado, oh my God, oh. That's fantastic, isn't it great? I would never have thought of that guys, this is just incredible, what does it mean to you two to own this legacy? This is a legacy that I want to leave to my family, to my grandchildren, Damien. and this will continue to exist because I hope and pray for at least another 100 years you know and what does it mean to you Damien oh it's like you said a place where history can continue because the trees were here before us and they will be here after us so In the meantime we'll be kind of stewards of the land, let's share some of that guacamole, yes sir, but the chips fall where they belong, as long as they have guacamole, okay? thank you foreigner El Ranchito de Ávila is a Southern California staple that has been in business for over half a century.
They have 13 locations and counting of this family-owned chain, but no two restaurants are exactly alike. Each Ávila resident puts their own touch on it. traditional Mexican family recipes, but here at the Sealed Beach Outpost they claim to have the best guacamole, so I've come to learn their secrets, it's time for guacamole and roll, hey, there's a lot of people here, the brothers and cousins of the aunts and uncles behind. Avalas El Ranchito truly treats its guests like family. This place is run by Elise Avila Smith, a third-generation restaurateur. She attributes the family's success to her grandmother.
Margarita's Hospitality. You know, she just focused on what we focus on: good, fresh food. Salvador and Margarita or mom. Ávila emigrated from Mexico to the US in 1958. How did you get into the restaurant business? My father had the opportunity to buy a restaurant and he talked to my mother and decided, "You know, this is a great opportunity." Salvador used his life savings to buy the former restaurant. property in Huntington Park, he turned to his six children, including Elise's father, Victor, for support. We'll go after school and help him do whatever he needs to do and my dad was pretty much during the day taking care of the whole restaurant and my mom was in the kitchen so she was the only one in the kitchen and grandpa was washing the dishes. .
Mom's traditional recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. They have been coming for a long time, in Mexico, when it first opened in 1966. Amila was the only Mexican restaurant in the mostly white neighborhood, many customers had no interest in Mom's traditional dishes, so she developed a strategy to attract people. It seemed natural for my mother to offer people whatever they wanted, so it was more like home if they didn't have it on the menu. that my mother would go into the kitchen and succeed anywhere for the next three decades. The Ávila brothers opened six new restaurants in Southern California.
This expansion was no coincidence. At the same time, Americans were falling in love with Mexican food in the early 80s. There were an estimated 2,500 Mexican restaurants in the US. Today there are over 60 thousand. I was smashing tables here as a kid Elise She witnessed that growth as a child and watched her father expand the family business, so I grew up doing homework in a position above that, I grew up with my grandparents living a block away from me, so I grew up cooking with her for years and years after college. Elise tried to work in other fields, but she was always drawn to the restaurants where she worked during my day.
I know I worked for a magazine and then my brother opened his first restaurant and I ended up waiting tables at night, so no matter what I did, I kept ending up back in this business and I loved it. I realized this was my passion, it's in my blood, how do you qualify to open an obelisk, it's processed, let me tell you, is it really? I had to work all the positions in the restaurant, so I washed the dishes. I worked in the kitchen for a few years, but I did it all after proving it. herself for a decade Elise opened her own novelist in 2015.
When I first opened my restaurant, I worked for several months from six in the morning until midnight and finally I remember that my dad and my brother came for an intervention and told me : "You have to do it". Go home, you have to sleep, you have to sleep, so I went home and they ran my restaurant at night and I knew that with my dad and my brother here there was nothing to worry about. Each Avila's restaurant is unique and reflects the family member who owns it. and the location have different decor and specialty menu items Elise puts her own spin on the brand by offering an extensive menu of tequila cocktails Dad, I'm going to make you a drink right now, let it be strong, greetings mija, but There are several dishes that you are Avocados are crucial to many of the family recipes, including the signature guacamole and your beloved chicken soup.
Tell me about Mama Ávila's soup, that soup that makes me feel at home, but it's a chicken breast and rice soup. We do it. from scratch every morning, including the broth, we put fresh avocado, cilantro, onion and tomato, and people go and the person they do when they get off the plane is go have some chicken soup that you mentioned, the avocado goes in the soup, tell me about the The importance of avocado is part of our culture. The bottom line is that no one wants to eat Mexican food without avocados and guacamole, so first I'm curious.
Victor, what is the secret of a good guacamole? You have to prepare it. You know it almost daily. Almost every hour it has to be fresh, it has to be well seasoned and a little bit of love. I like to think I make good guacamole, but I'm sure I can learn from the best, so how about you show me how you guys do it? Guacamole Before making guacamole I enjoyed a cucumber margarita and tried mom's famous soup, that's great.
