Ken Block FINALLY HOONS The New FORD MUSTANG MACH-E!

May 29, 2021
I'm jared deanda and you know these guys ken

block

vaughn gittin jr welcome to my state for social distancing here, but we're at the Ford Proving Ground, these are some hallowed grounds when you say your state, even though it's Arizona, yeah. I'm from Arizona, we're in Arizona. I had to drive here, just like you. They drove from Maryland. Yes, we did and I drove 10 hours to Park City with a stop at Lake Powell along the way. That's all. I know you gotta have these hallowed grounds man, coming here there are some amazing features, have you been here before?

Yeah, the last time I was here we were doing some testing on one of our race cars and there were four GT mules testing. which was super cool, have you been to these? Yeah, yeah, before we're lucky to be the Ford Performance family that we have access to and it's amazing to have the full operation of the facilities that we have today. I mean, there's a 20-acre concrete pad. behind us, you know, and for Ken and I it's a great place to do things. This is a playground. Speaking of gameplay, you can do something you've never done before.

More Interesting Facts About,

ken block finally hoons the new ford mustang mach e...

There are images of you driving a very special vehicle that has a pony in it. It's part of the Ford family, it's new technology, why are you here today? Well, the last time, I think it was like November. I was part of the maki release program and I just wanted to slide it. I can have it? own, I can hold it, you can

finally

get home, not yet, Emma was very nice and kept saying no, I think there were only three units at the time and they hadn't launched the car yet so they would, they just weren't absolutely. he let me drive it very aggressively and it was raining so I had a lot of fun but today Vaughn has a new toy the performance that you and Ford built it yeah we built it you know the rtr team built it a similar team to the who built the unicorn.

We dreamed about this project and we collaborated to achieve performance and we built a very powerful battery electric Ford Mustang, yes you need it, you are going to drive this thing too, I will

finally

be able to drive this camera if we have time. I don't know if we have time, look, we have to go, he helped this thing come to life and he's never driven it, but let's get back to your thing, I can drive your thing and eventually you can too, let's show him this thing. This is surely the Ford Mustang Machi 1400, something my RTR team and I are very proud of.

You know we've been working on this in secret for the last year and a half so you know I've been watching bad electrical tech for a while being like v8 you know the unicorn all our rtr stuff is 1200 horsepower drift cars of force man I love gasoline engines you know it's amazing but the capabilities that I understood from battery electric vehicles are next level and for things that I like. and I love doing it and the total control of them is something that has interested me a lot and finally the technology was there to do something.
I felt like we could really demonstrate EV technology and have fun with it. We dream of this result. It was this epic collaboration between our team and Ford Performance and building this, you know, first of its kind, our game-changing demonstrator in perspective, yeah, it makes over 1400 horsepower and around 1500 pound-feet of torque in the engines and then if you take that math, that's before the differentials, so now when you add like a differential, it's a torque multiplier, it could be four to six thousand pound-feet. of torque if we want to put that output on or depending on what we're doing, there's nothing like This is literally like a magnetic roller coaster that you control like it's just unpleasant for us.
It's like, wow, look at this next step of ways we can go out and do the things we love, but in a radical way that takes acting to a higher level. even higher level, so I'm excited to get on this, so tell us a little bit more about it, but I want to, it has a 57 kilowatt hour battery, it's between both wheels as low as possible, so even though it weighs quite a bit , the battery the center of gravity is super low, so it weighs about 5000 pounds, the battery alone weighs 1500 pounds, but that weight down there and that low center of gravity feels like a standalone car, like it just delivered everything, it's so sharp that it doesn't feel like it's heavy, it's got three motors in the front, four in the back and you can change them, you can go 50 50 and we have 20 20 increments right now, but you can go in increments of two percent if you wish, it is infinitely adjustable.
You can make a driveline go in the opposite direction so you can sit there burning each other's donuts super fast. I can't do that with that either. You can completely control it, so you mentioned the arrow, so this car is a Swiss army. knife basically as a demonstrator, it's a testbed for Ford performance, you know, engineer, and you know, learning things for production, but just to clarify that very quickly, it wasn't built to compete in anything, in particular, this It was like a technological experiment. We're going to take a step forward with the maki, so this is the first time the maki has been modified.
It's meant to explore what's possible to potentially do some things in the future, but right now it's basically a demo, sure, exactly, obviously, uh underneath. Here, as far as the engine and transmission, in the front there are three motors stacked, it is effectively like a rotary but electric, so they are axial flux motors, so they are stacked together to multiply the power that we have in a quick winter change. the front and the rear because the gearing with electric cars is very important depending on what you're trying to do obviously cantilever suspension and so you have two cooling systems for each engine assembly so one of the systems is oil this goes through the engines and then obviously we have some water going through the engine so expect a separate radiator for each system and there's another set in the back yeah so there's a giant venturi on top with radiators down at the rear to then have the exactly the same configuration that goes to the rear four motors exactly there are four motors in the rear it has fully electric power steering obviously like all of our cars we are used to have a mechanical pump this is an electric power steering pump which again This is tunable and things like that, where is the flow capacitor so the flow can see?
It's there so the flux capacitor is actually an inverter and there's one inverter per motor so those are the ones that basically take the power from the battery and you know you hit the motor all your gears are controlled by the gear main and you have all that torque and horsepower, so you don't need to split the gears. Obviously we wanted to build a tunnel where you could see all of this. I'm looking at here like cables things that you've never seen, was the first thing you said, look how big your cables are, they're big, they're big and they're shielded, it's very simple, you know, we have a very simple switch. panel there and motec dashboard as you are used to seeing some of your vehicles, the same button controls you will look at, you will see that there are only two pedals, yes, there are not three, yes, but that dashboard is huge, yes, it is beautiful, well, you said You said it could run for 45 minutes, so like a pike, talking, going up a hill, running, how long does it take to charge it?
Know? Do you plug it in overnight? No, 45 minutes of full charge. Wow, yeah, let's put the suit on you and me. I'll give you a little bit about you, you'll finally get the tutorial, this is it, you're ready bro, I'm running, okay, let's do it, let's turn on the rock and roll so it's at full power now at full power, it's like a magnetic roller coaster, so crazy. How there's no sound because I've driven a couple more, but that's really good torque, just turn, pull the handbrake, you know, turn right, it's all there when you want it, what do you want to do this time?
I do not know, may be. just a longer slide ok just get a little more speed just hit the handbrake and that's it this is very strange because your tires don't make any noise it's the ring that's your reference yeah the thing I just want to play with the accelerator. control and really, but it's like my brain calibration is still at zero, yeah, just go around the radius and just stop and then just modulate your throttle around it, so how do you feel good like I want, but that doesn't It was like this. Fair, that wasn't fair.
I was a joker. I know you want to put your hoodie on now. I'd love to. Can I please? Yes, it's happening right now. Oh thanks. I appreciate it, man, that was right, it's fast, for sure. But the experience is like the whole slam of the gear shift, the flames coming out of the room, what is that view like? Oh, it's so unpleasant, so we're done on the first day. In fact, I had to have a lot of fun. Today, Ken had to sit in his hot car. He drove the car straight two or three times, maybe he did, oh, and we did a couple donuts.
Well, one very exciting thing for me was watching Ken drive our creation. Can you give us a little summary? uh awesome yeah I mean I tried to mop the maki came back to detroit before launch and they wouldn't let me so vaughn and they finally let me do it today and Ford approved it yeah yeah thanks for that so it was fun I wanna I mean that's what it's built for although it's an amazing

mach

ine so it was fun to get out and slide it around a bit although now that I've driven it now I just want to drive it more and then you got the controller and then Ken made a dream of mine come true.
I know it was really amazing working with Ken and his team to build this at the RTR lab and, I just don't know, he promised me that he could drive it at some point where we haven't been able to and it's been like five. or six years and now it left me and it worked for me too, so thank you very much, this thing is everything that everyone thinks it is, it's raw, it's crazy and it's very fun to drive and very agile and, uh, when we were building, designing it. that was the goal but I never made it to the field to confirm it and I take my hat off to the team once again and I'm lucky that I get to drive it all the time so I'm stuck you actually have the driver yeah tomorrow boom , we.
I'm going to do a gymkhana day, so I'm full day and I can use unicorn maki 1400. We've driven a little bit together, like rear wheel drive, like a gymkhana rack, um, rear wheel driving, but we've never been able to have something. fun and you know, integrate everything while driving, I'm certainly not at the level that he is, I'm learning and having a lot of fun with you, you know, you'll be able to unlearn your other instincts, yes, because right now in all-wheel drive every time that turn I want to like the counter forever instead of driving straight and going off it, but I'm realizing I'm getting a switch in my brain, let's get some sleep, see you tomorrow
