How I wish HARMONY was explained to me as a student

Mar 29, 2024
Hello, my name is Nari Sol, I am a composer pianist and in this video I will do my best to explain musical

harmony

in the simplest way possible. I think that many textbooks and music schools tend to complicate this topic a bit. So I was thinking to myself that if I kept this to less than 10 minutes, one of the most important points I would include to help make sense of all of this, this may not be the most complete guide, but that's not the point that I would rather give. I'll give you the context in which you can use this knowledge to help you create music and, more importantly, free you from thinking that there are all these details you have to take into account and all these rules you have to follow.

I also have a It's a very special announcement, so stay tuned for that in this video. Harmony is about how sounds vibrate together. There are and are no rules that make these sounds vibrate well together. It really depends on cultural context and preference. How these five notes vibrate together. quite different from how these seven notes vibrate together in strange sets of notes in Western music, to the point that if you go to a piano and simply play the white notes, you are already connecting to the seven-note scale which is called the scale. elderly. There are many ways to break the distance between an octave.

A major scale is just one of the options and what gives it its identity is the unique spacing between the notes. If you play individual notes and move them, there is already a sense of

harmony

, so if a single note is like a rose, a chord is like a bouquet of roses. Now we are operating with a larger unit, we can use the same scale as before, but now we build the notes into chords, now each of the notes. they are supported with additional sound if you have a melody, chords can support the notes of the melody, the strongest note of a chord is very appropriately called the root and is like the base of a bouquet of flowers, it holds everything together, so The root of this C major chord is C when these fundamental notes change with the chords, this is what we call a chord progression, it basically consists of having groups of notes one after another, many times in school they teach us to memorize these chords and I'm thinking of them as a straight line, but I like to think of them in a more three-dimensional way, like these chords are orbiting each other.

Some chords have more gravity than others and that is also the reason why some chords are used more often than others, like Breathing in and out having chords like one and five is like having an anticipation and then releasing this tension and the Liberation is what shapes music. It's no different than how a good story has ups and downs and this is what keeps you engaged. It's something amazing. is that you can make these chords as big or as small as you want, by the way, if at any point you feel lost or feel like you need to brush up on some music theory.

I just published my book called Musical Elements of Narisol. I have done my best to compile much of my knowledge when it comes to music and digested it in a way that I hope will be very practical for both beginners and experienced musicians. I put so much heart and soul into this that it would mean a lot. If you check out the link, I put it in the description below so definitely give it a try. Let's go back to how I moved around a note to create Harmony. What if I told you that there is already Harmony in that one note?
Kind of like when you see a color like purple, it contains red and blue, even though you can't see those colors. The tones vibrate together to create a single sound. The science of this has to do with something called the harmonic series many times. When Harmony is

explained

, this is mentioned early on, but to be honest, I think this complicates things a bit. All you have to know is that when you hear a C, all these other notes vibrate too, it's hard to hear them. unless you have a year of training, but trust me, they are all there.
Fortunately, mathematicians and musicians throughout history did the legwork and created tools and systems to help us use harmony. One of those tools is called the circle of fifths. There are many ways to use this. As if there are many ways to use a color wheel, these symbols come from a musical notation system that allows us to label all of these notes. It also shows us how the different key centers relate to each other. Really, it's all about how the different groups of notes vibrate. together, this is what composers have in mind to play with contrast, let's think again about the color wheel, sometimes we want to choose colors that combine well with each other and other times we want to choose colors that contrast with each other so that they stand out in a way similar. sometimes we use key centers that match well with each other foreign ERS that don't and this is a form of contrast now color is a very subjective thing, it really depends on the context, it's the same with music, what sounds harmonious and stable is what we call consonant and what does not sound harmonious or subtle is what we call dissonant.
The reason something like this sounds more dissonant is because of the frame of reference we're in now, let's listen to a similar moment, say. that this is our sound world maybe it felt different maybe less distant although in the previous example it felt a little more dissonant the beautiful thing about using Harmony is that these rules only exist as guidelines that we can really follow or we can free ourselves from them, by Just like fashion for example, we can follow the traditional formats of dressing, but we can also break free from that and experiment as artists, we can use some or all of the rules, it's really up to us, hopefully that gave you some additional ideas. in harmony if you want to go deeper, take a look at my book The Musical Elements of Nariso.
