I started during covid because I want to be a source of light, inspiration and education for all of us who have type one, maybe you are just finding me, if so, welcome, I am so glad that maybe you are one of my thousands of followers now . they've been doing well, they've been watching my videos, I'm so glad I've had type 1 diabetes for 40 years and I'm very passionate about making sure we all get the education and support we need to get an A1c below 6.5 and feel that we have this to feel empowered to feel positive to feel educated my big complaint is that most of us with type 1 diabetes have never received the full toolbox of education we need to truly thrive with type 1 diabetes, which is why Burnout can be so intense because many of you have said that I have tried everything you told me to do and I am still failing.

If you don't give them the full toolbox to get where they need to be, they're going to feel like they're failing, but in my opinion it's like we just need a better education and that's what it's all about. Now I'm human. I don't always do it. I have a perfect flat line at 98. I definitely have my ups and downs. I always say that you are not controlling diabetes, we are navigating it, okay, sailing is like we are the captain of a ship and we have to assimilate it. All of these variables we have to take into account what the tide is doing and you know how far we are from the coast and where the wind is blowing and with diabetes it's like how much insulin do I have on board. Do I still have food digesting?

I will be active today. Am I a woman and am I in my cycle? Am I stressed today? Didn't I sleep well today? All these tools, all these non-tools, all these variables, we have to use our tools to get our blood sugar in range and that's why it's beautiful that they gave us these good formulas like eating 15 grams of carbohydrates after a low and your insulin to carb ratio is 1 to 15 and this is your basal rate, but the big problem with those things is that it's us. If we have a dynamic disease, we have to do things differently every day, so you won't always need 15 grams after a low.

Your basal rate will not always be the same. Your insulin to carb ratio won't always work. Let me get to the point today. My point today is: have you ever eaten, say, 20 grams of protein and not dosed any other food, just a protein and seeing what your blood sugar level is would be an interesting experiment to try? Protein, especially when eaten without carbs and especially if you are already a typical low carb, can increase blood sugar, so the other day I had a patient who told me that he only had eggs and bacon for breakfast, so no.
I took the dose and got high. No one was ever taught that protein and fat affect blood sugar, so protein can slowly raise blood sugar over five hours and you have to experiment yourself to figure out how to dose. So, there are some formulas available on how to dose. For grams of protein, you can Google them, but I also have a whole course called Why Carb Counting Doesn't Work, How to Properly Dose Meals, but today I'm just putting that seed in your mind that you actually have. To start thinking beyond carbs, the more protein you eat at a meal, the more likely you are to notice this, so protein is often pure or requires an extended bolus if you have a pump or multiple injections if you have a single it does. injections like the ones I do because they won't spike your blood sugar and then make you crash, but they will slowly raise your blood sugar potentially over five hours, so you may only need one or two units when you sit down and eat and you may need another unit.
An hour or two later, every protein meal will be different unless you eat very militantly, but I just want you to know from today's video that you think about protein and start to see if you have elevated levels after the meal. Is it because you haven't thought about dosing protein correctly: one dose per meal usually doesn't work for many people if you eat low carb if you eat high fat if you eat high protein these types of meals require a lower amount of insulin , but over a long period of time, so think about that, if you want to learn more, you can definitely check out my course, it's on my website, listed up there, so that's the end of my point today, okay, but now I know many of you are wondering about my membership program.
