First Demo Day on Our Dream Homestead!

Apr 08, 2024
Hello friends, welcome back to Inger Homestead, we are in the new house and this is the

first

day of real work in the new house. I was here the day after we toured, so if you want to see a tour of the new home, I'll do that. I linked that in the description box, but we went in and painted some paint samples on the walls because we are going to paint the entire house before we move in, we are going to paint ceilings, walls and trim that I picked up at Sherwin-Williams. A couple of paint samples yesterday the other day and I thought we need to put these paint samples on the wall to dry because the goal is to try to paint this house before we move it, that's not the goal that's happening so which I had four different colors when Josh and I remodeled our

first

house, we painted the whole house, it was called functional gray and there was a required gray that was like the lightest and alpaca gray, which was lighter than that because we want a warm gray . tone josh and I prefer cooler tones like grays, blacks and whites but these floors are warm and we want to make sure we choose a gray that is warm because gray is one of those fun colors and it's actually the hardest color to find because I can go purple, blue, green, brown, all the colors, so I know Sherwin-Williams functional grays are a pretty warm brown, but I thought I'd try something new too because we're going to paint the whole house, let's go ahead and let's get a A couple of samples and try a couple of things on the wall and we're going to do green in the bathroom so I got a couple of different green samples but I got one green sample.

These are the four colors we're working with when I look. If so, they look pretty similar. This is a requirement and functional. These were colors that we had in our first house, so I know we like these colors, but I wanted to try these mega grays and a new gray because they almost look like, yeah, you can't even. See it in this light, but it almost looked a little more brown, which I thought might go a little better with our floor, so let's put these swatches up on the wall and see if we can tell the difference between these colors.

More Interesting Facts About,

first demo day on our dream homestead...

I just picked up these paint samples yesterday, so they should be nice and ready to go on the walls. I have a cheap brush here that doesn't even fit in my container. I didn't really think about that. Put this on the wall. I should have bought it. Some of them really like the 50 cent foam brushes because this brush I brought I don't know where it came from but it's losing bristles so I'm going to make sure I get all the bristles out before the paint dries. I have my four. swatches and I didn't just do it in this room, I went ahead and painted in four different areas, so we got here.

I wanted to do different highlights so we could really pick a color. I think I'm going to go. I'll go back and get the clearest of each of these. Clearly it still needs to dry completely before choosing a color. I personally lean towards this one, which is uh, I don't remember the name, but it's not the one we had in our last house, these are the ones we had in our last house, but they probably should. I'm showing you the color of the floor with that so you can see, I think it's more brown with that versus that. a little more blue, I'm not sure Josh is here and he's measuring the trim because there is quite a bit of trim in this house that is damaged or trim was never put in or there is trim that doesn't match so this piece of trim here doesn't match . the rest of the trim surrounds the rest of the doors, so before we paint anything, we clearly want to fix all the trim and Josh isn't very good at finishing the work on our first house, we completely redid all the trim we had custom made.

We did Wayne's siding, it was awesome and he's very, very good at this, so that's something he can do, so tonight he's going to measure and find out all the places where things are missing. I can show you a couple of places, so that's an example of that door where he is. randomly different moldings, not sure why maybe it was all they had left in the store or something, these moldings here are different than the ones on this wall, so you'll want to match this molding to that molding, this one too It's a different color. a very very dark green the name of this color is that color oh wow it looks darker in the video it's called secret garden i want a really rich green here we're going to paint the bead board down here bright white by sherwin-williams i I had a couple more paint chips, but I think they might be too dark, although the one I have is quite dark.
This is the one I chose and then I got these other green ones that are almost black and may be a little too dark. I'm going to see how it dries and then we'll go from there, but I think this green will look good with this dresser here and it's going to be kind of farmhouse with a very bright white bead board, I think those look great, let's go too We're going to replace all of these, they're all beige and we're going to have all the light switches and outlet covers white, for that we'll probably bring in an electrician to do it because there's a lot of light. switches Josh could do it, but it would just take him weeks and weeks and weeks to do it.
I made one more swatch here with the gray. This is the kitchen, which has completely different lighting to the other rooms, which is a requirement, it is functional grey. a new gray and I don't remember what the name of that one is, but we'll have to see how they dry and then we'll go from there and that concludes what I'm doing here tonight, that was my only goal. put those paint samples on the wall and we'll come back when we're here working on the house while I was at the beach because I just got back from a girls' trip, Josh moved all the stuff from the store to the store here. so we can start working on some of the projects we want to work on before we move.
One of the main projects he was going to do was replace the molding and put it where it was missing if I come in here. In the sunroom you can see areas like here where there is no trim around this window and there are a couple of places in the house where the project system is completely finished which was nice we knew we moved and we have done trim work . The problem was easy, but there are about four different styles of trim in this house and Josh over the weekend went to a trim place in our town and went to Home Depot, Lowe's, all the big box stores and couldn't find the combination. trim, which is a problem because we don't need more than four styles of trim in this house, we have a very specific style of trim that we prefer and before we moved in we thought about whether we were going to paint the entire house and the trim we could also go ahead with removing the molding, although unfortunately it is a very good quality molding and we are going to put the style of molding that we prefer in the house.
We have a pretty simple style and it won't really be much more. work to remove the trim and put what we want in place if we fix all the pieces of trim around the house that need to be repaired, there are areas where there is no caulking around the trim and this is going to be very, very easy to remove because you just take a crowbar and pull it off the wall, but there are areas in the house where it's cold, so what we're going to have to do first is take a razor blade, run it along that cut line, and then we can take a crowbar and remove this piece of trim that we brought on the truck, so while we're removing the trim we can go ahead and load it up here.
Josh is taking next week off, so all we're focusing on this week is getting This House

demo

ed so we can start putting it back together. We can't actually put the decorations away until Monday because today is Sunday, so today's goal is to remove all the decorations from around the house, see if we can do it, measure everything and so on. On Monday morning we can order the decoration. A little background on Josh and me. When we first got married, we bought our first house in the suburbs and we wanted to have a garden and Josh wanted to have a store, but those two things weren't really realistic.
In our first house I was able to have a container garden in the back, I could grow lettuce, kale, and herbs, and at one point I grew some potatoes and carrots on my porch because they got a little more sun. My biggest problem was the sun in our first house, but what we did in those four and a half years was remodel the entire house, we spent four years transforming it and we touched every surface and those are very valuable skills that we learned. When we were there at our current house, we learned gardening skills. Josh built me a beautiful irrigation system.
I've spent two years and now I'm in my third year gardening and I feel like both houses have been a combination of this house. where we have the skills to transform the inside and we're going to have the skills to transform the outside and build a

dream

garden out there and it seems like both of those things were meant to be and there were times when we were supposed to do it. Be patient and learn those skills because we didn't remodel the current house we're in because we never felt like it was something we were supposed to do and we took that time to work on the outside, which Josh is doing here.
We've already talked about the trim, how we're redoing the trim, but we're also going to remove and replace all the hardware. One really cool thing is that I can donate this hardware, both the knobs and the hinges, to be refurbished. I'll would love to do that. Donate the trim to refinish as well, but they don't accept trim that has been used and I understand because that would be a lot of work, but I can donate the hinges and hardware because they can be reused absolutely no problem, so all trim excuses. To me, all the hinges and hardware in this house are a little different and Josh and I have a style that we will be looking for in the coming days.
You see we're going to go hardware shopping and we're going to have matching hardware and I'm really excited about that so we're going to take the doors off because we're also going to paint them to match the trim so we thought it would be easier to go ahead and remove. all the doors, hinges and knobs at the same time here I'm just showing you that the hinges were gold and the handles were silver. Now let's get ready to be able to cut some of these really big pieces of molding so we can put them on the truck because I'm going to take this molding to the landfill.
I want to be able to fit as much as possible on the truck. Security First. I'll take off my gloves before I start cutting this trim, but not that trim. Fitting in here and I want to try to fix the truck up as much as we can before we take it to the dump so come on I have to say this is so exciting that this is happening in the first house we bought and we never knew it. that we wanted more and it was simply a time and place to learn the skills of remodeling that house.
We didn't really know what that house was meant to be for us, but that's what we were motivated to update it so that it would look nice and aesthetically pleasing, but we only lived in it for about six months until the opportunity to buy the house arose. where we are now with the garden and the shop, and that was something we couldn't let go because those were two things we had always wanted and it was very sad to leave the house that, as we know, made our home and made it look exactly as we wanted, but we knew that step had to be taken in order to continue moving forward for Josh and I and we wanted to remodel it.
You know, if you've been here a while, we replaced the roof, but that's something that had to be done and we painted it, but we never got there and totally transformed it to be ours. because we took that time to learn how to garden and there was a lot of time and resources available to us and the garden became the priority and I think we made the right decision because we met and created this. beautiful online community through the garden and it's been a really beautiful thing, so I just have to say that now that we have this house, it's very exciting to be able to create the interior to make it look as beautiful as we were able to make.
Exterior view of our last house, so Josh is now removing these doors because they have mirrors and I want to match these closet doors with the doors that are on all the little ways and I really don't want mirrors in this room. in particular, so I went ahead and asked him if he could go ahead and remove that and I can donate those doors, in fact, they are something I can send to be restored. We are making great progress. We have a completely finished room and the hallway is 99. What I'm doing now is scraping off the coke residue that's there, that's like the residual putty.
I have found that this tool works very well. Just find some putty and I was remembering when we started this day working together for the first time in our new house and we were remembering how good it felt to be back together working on transforming a space and making this space our home and it felt Well, it brought us back to the beginning of whereWe arrived when we got married and what we did for the first four and a half years and one really interesting thing about this property that I mentioned when we toured, but I'm sure we're further out in the country because that's where you can get the most land, but in We are actually closer to some family members and as I was driving to the new house to get ready for this day of work I realized that I forgot some really important things and two of those items were brooms. and we just called our family and they brought them well it's over so it's going to be really nice to be even closer to family than we are now it's 7:20 and we're both really hungry so I'm going to run and go to get some food and then Josh is really going to get started. measuring all the trimming because we have to get up at seven, well, we have to be at the trimming place tomorrow at 7:30 to place our order for the trimming so it can be delivered on Wednesday because they are first come, first served and the Deliveries go out on Wednesday and we want to be one of those first deliveries so you need to measure it because it will take you quite a while to measure the entire house for the finish and I'm going to go pick up We had some dinner so we can enjoy dinner now because it was out of the city.
I had nothing planned or prepared for dinner while I was away. Josh had lunch and breakfast because we did those frozen meal breakfasts and I already had dinner ready for him, but I didn't really think about it until today, sometimes that happens and sometimes you have to take it out and that's what we're going to do, but now I'm home, Josh is taking next week off and we'll be I'll be here working all week. I'll see what I can find in my freezer for frozen meals. I'm running out of them, but we might be doing some things with crock pots and I might start bringing you, you know, which I probably will.
I'll probably start a crock pot meal for this. I digress, but we'll probably start a crock pot meal tomorrow and then I'll bring it here and bring all the sides and everything we can eat here. Dinner because we're going to be here a long time so Josh and I are going to share a Caesar salad and then we went to our new local pizza place and had pizza so that's going to be our dinner and we don't have room oh yeah. We have plates, I think we have plates, don't we, we had paper plates, oh yeah, and we have a fork, which is nice.
The first night we had the house, my sister came over and my mom and dad surprised us with dinner. My brother. His father-in-law is grilling in his truck, he has a grill that attaches to his truck so we can follow him closely and they left us a couple of paper plates. We just finished a wonderful dinner and have been talking and regrouping. Josh will finish measuring the moldings and I will. I'm going to take care of the hallway mess because this is what we were able to do tonight, we finished the whole walkthrough and the laundry room is almost finished, we also finished one of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms so let's do this.
I swept it and cleaned it and then early tomorrow morning we will go to the trim store if you have any recommendations for warm gray colors, the ones I put on the walls, if you liked it or didn't like it or if you have a different gray color that you would recommend. I would really appreciate it because we decided to do this whole project. It's definitely going to delay the painting a bit, so I have a little time to decide and any feedback would be appreciated. I just want to thank you for taking the time out of your day.
More videos will appear here. You can enjoy them from now until my next upload. I hope you are having a fantastic day and I can't wait to see you. next time goodbye friends
