The MCA sounds good. I have long maintained that NAFTA was perhaps the worst trade agreement ever made since its adoption. The United States accumulated trade deficits totaling more than two trillion dollars and that is a figure much greater than that of Canada and Mexico in we lost large amounts of money and we lost 4.1 million jobs in the manufacturing sector and one in four jobs in the auto sector we lost about 25% of our jobs in the auto sector, even more than that during the entire campaign. I promise to renegotiate NAFTA and today we have kept that promise, but for 25 years as As a civilian, as a businessman, I used to say how could anyone have signed an agreement like NAFTA and I looked at New England and so many other places where I was, the factories They were leaving jobs, people were being laid off and we can't allow that.

So we have negotiated this new agreement based on the principle of justice and reciprocity. For me it is the most important word and trade because we have been treated so unfairly by so many nations around the world that we are changing that we just signed a much better agreement with South Korea. We had a horrible, horrible agreement and we just signed it at the United Nations and it worked well and they are happy, we are happy that it was good for employment, good for many things when that agreement was signed. They said that 250,000 jobs would be created by signing this transaction and they were right.

I said it before. They were right. 250,000 jobs for South Korea, not the United States, so that has changed and it is much for the better. This is a brand. new agreement the agreement will govern nearly 1.2 trillion in trade, making it the largest trade agreement in US history. I want to congratulate US Trade Representative Bob Light Heiser, who has worked, no one understands how hard he is, no matter when you call him. in the office or was in someone else's office doing the same thing hey Bob Light, Heiser is great. I've heard it for years. I said if I ever do this, I want Ally to go to Hauser to represent us because he felt the same way I did. and the entire USTR team standing behind me and some here in the audience.
I want to thank you all, Peter Navarro, all of you, a fantastic group of people who love our country. I also want to thank Secretary Minuchin, Secretary Ross, Secretary Neilson, Secretary Perdue, Jared Kushner, Peter. Navarro and the United States ambassador to Canada, Kelly craft, thank you, thank you Kelly. I also want to thank President Peña Nieto of Mexico, with whom we had some disagreements, but I really like him a lot. I think they can like me. I'm not sure, but I think he's a great person and he'll be leaving soon, but he's really done a good job and he's a wonderful, wonderful person, and the

-elect of Mexico, López Obrador, who has given his support to this agreement and We are developing a really good relationship that I think is very important for our country frankly and for Mexico and so they worked together on this this they both did I said look I don't want to sign an agreement and then a new

president

comes in they don't like it and we have difficulties , they worked a lot together on it and I thank them both.
I must certainly give my sincerest regards to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. Many stories emerged about Justin and I having a difficult time getting the business deal done. but I will tell you that it turned out to be a very, very good agreement for both of us and a very, very good agreement for all three of us. It puts us in a position we've never been in before. It's very good if we look at the world. and what the world is doing and what, if you look at the unfair trade practices that countries are using against the United States, this is a fantastic agreement for all of us, once passed by Congress, this new agreement will be the more modern and updated. and balanced trade deal in the history of our country with the most advanced worker protections ever developed, if you look at the reviews, people who normally under no circumstances would say good things because they automatically have to say bad things, even some Democrats say that it's surprising that I had some there, they haven't been given the sound bites yet, I guess Mike, but actually some Democrats said this is really surprising if you really understood all that, but tomorrow I suspect they'll change their tune, but that's okay because people know how good it is, it's an incredible deal for a lot of people, and it will also be the most advanced trade agreement in the world, with ambitious provisions on the digital economy, patents, very important financial services and other areas in which the United States It has strong competitiveness. advantage Mexico and Canada have agreed to strong new labor protections environmental protections and new protections for intellectual property so important that this new agreement is an especially big victory for our farmers our farmers have been through a lot over the last 15 years and have taken advantage of For everyone, prices have gone down a lot and we are working on other agreements that will also make them very happy, but this is a very, very important agreement for our farmers.
New Mexico and Canada will open up much more than they are now and I think there will be a better spirit between the three countries, which is important for our farmers. The agreement will give our farmers and ranchers much greater access to sell U.S.-grown products in Mexico and Canada. The agreement includes a substantial increase in opportunities for our farmers to export American wheat, poultry eggs and dairy products, including milk, butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream, to name a few. I want to be very specific, I want to be very specific, right? and many other products, but those products were not actually being treated fairly.
As for those who work so hard to produce them and will now be treated fairly, these measures will support many hundreds of thousands of American jobs. This is also a historic victory for American manufacturers and American auto workers who have been treated so poorly. I have lost so many jobs over the years under NAFTA under the current New Deal and if you look at the current NAFTA agreement, the new agreement takes care of all of these problems because foreign NAFTA companies have been allowed to manufacture many of its parts abroad. send them to Mexico and Canada for assembly and ship their foreign made cars to the United States without taxes, so we let all our people go, we fire everyone, they make cars, they make products that make everything in another country, they ship them to the United States.
States don't have taxes and the cost is very little different sometimes it's more for those people who like to talk about costs with this deal we are closing all these terrible loopholes they are closed they are gone they were a disaster for example we are requiring A large portion of each car will be made by high-wage workers, which will greatly reduce foreign outsourcing, which was a tremendous problem and means that more auto parts and automobiles will be made within the United States, we will make many more cars and our companies not to leave the United States by laying off their workers and building their cars elsewhere that incentive no longer exists under the NAFTA agreement they had that incentive they have the opposite incentive now we are not going to lose our companies that was the most important thing to me I don't want to that our companies will leave and lay off our workers and that our workers will never get jobs to replace those chips.
Those days are over. This agreement will also impose new standards that will require that at least 75% of each car be manufactured in North America in order to qualify for the privilege of free access to our markets and that is what it is it is a privilege we do not take it as a privilege We do not take it as a privilege, it is a privilege for them to do business with us and I am not talking about Mexico, I am talking about everyone, everyone, it is a privilege for China to do business with us, it is a privilege for the European Union, which has been treated very badly, but they are coming to do business with us, Japan, all countries are privileged for them to come in and attack the piggy bank in this we will result in many more things happening here in the United States, it means more than anything else , many more American jobs and these are high quality jobs, there are also strong provisions to enforce what are called rules of origin requirements, this will incentivize billions of dollars and new purchases of cars made by us, once approved, It will be a new dawn for the American auto industry and for American auto workers you will see that they understand that they voted for us in a large number of them, even though their leadership is always Democratic, a couple of them told me: I don't know how I can Do it again, a lot of them the leaders would back the Democrats and tell me they're going to get the majority of the union worker votes and we got the majority of the union worker votes, but the American auto worker was way behind what we were doing. as a major aspect - it will transform North America back into a manufacturing powerhouse, if you remember the previous administration said we will no longer have manufacturing jobs.
Basically, we are no longer going to have, we are no longer going to manufacture things. No, quite the opposite, we will be a manufacturing powerhouse and they will allow us to recover a supply chain that has been offshored to the world due to unfair trade issues. We also provided new intellectual property protections for biologic medicines that will make North America a haven for medical innovation and development. We want our medications to be made here when you took prescription medications. We don't like receiving them from foreign countries that we don't know. What is happening with those medications?
How they are becoming important. This historic agreement will send money and jobs to the United States and North America. Good for Canada. Good for Mexico. Instead of jobs going abroad, they will come home to us. We have already had it, we have many car companies. I was with Prime Minister Abbey of Japan, she said that we have sent many car companies to the United States over the last year and a half, that's right, big expansions and, very importantly, she said many more. They come because they now have an incentive to be here. People want to return to the United States.
As I say, the United States is respected again, but it is also respected as two Trade and Industry. This is a truly extraordinary agreement for the United States. Canada. and pain of the president of Mexico, but oh, it is so important that the president and I have developed this type of bond, bond or trade, sorrow grandson, a man who has done a very good job for Mexico in terms of trade and the first Minister Trudeau, who I just spoke to. I just spoke to both of them a moment ago, they love their countries, they want to do the right thing for their countries and that's what they've done and we've really formed if you look at this agreement, we've formed a great partnership with Mexico and Canada, and I plan sign the agreement at the end of November.
Then I'll present it for approval to Congress, where in theory there should be no problems, but anything you present to Congress is a problem, no matter what it is, it's the biggest deal ever made. sign, they'll say, well, you know Trump likes it, so we're not going to pass it because that would be good for Republicans, so we can't pass it, but it will be sent to Congress under the Authority Act. of Commercial Promotion. This agreement follows our successful completion of a new, balanced trade agreement with South Korea. The tremendous difference between that agreement and what it wasIt was a disaster, as I said, to improve the old agreement that had eliminated so many jobs, also continues on our announcement last week of a new trade negotiation with Japan Japan would never negotiate with the United States they say we are not going to negotiate they told the administration previous that we are not going to negotiate I said you don't have to negotiate but we are going to put a very, very substantial tax on your car if you don't, by the way, without tariffs we wouldn't be talking about a deal just for those babies who keep talking about tariffs that include Congress, oh please no.
We don't charge tariffs without tariffs, we wouldn't be, we wouldn't be here. I can tell you that Bob and all these people would not be here right now and we are

full

y prepared to do so if they do not negotiate. but Japan wants to negotiate, in fact, they called about three weeks ago and he's a fantastic guy, he just had a tremendous victory and they said we'd like to start negotiations right away. India, which is the king of tariffs, called us and said what do we want. start negotiations immediately when Bob Light Iser said what happened, he would never do this, they said no, we want to keep your president happy, he's that cute, not nice.
It's true that they have to keep us happy because they understand that we are aware of what has been happening. India charges one hundred percent tariffs and then if we want to put a twenty-five percent tariff, people will call from Congress, but that's not the case. free trade and I would look at people and say where these people come from, where they come from, so because of the power of tariffs and the power we have with tariffs, in many cases we won't even have to use them. That's how powerful they are and that's how good they are, but in many cases we're not going to have to use them and many, in many cases, the countries that are charging massive tariffs are eliminating those tariffs, as you know, we have two hundred and fifty billion dollars. at twenty-five percent interest with China right now and we could go to two hundred and sixty-seven billion dollars more and China really wants to talk and I said, frankly, it's too early to talk, I can't talk now because they're not ready. because they have been tearing us apart for so many years, it doesn't happen that fast and if politically people force it too fast, the right deal will not be achieved for our workers and for our country, but China wants to talk and we want to talk to them and we want them to. help us with North Korea, we want you to continue helping us with North Korea, that is very important, the European Union has been very hard on the United States last year and for many years they have lost around one hundred and fifty billion dollars a year they have huge trade barriers and they didn't want to come, they didn't want to talk jean-claude great businessman a head of the European Union jean-claude my friend I would say jean-claude we want to make a deal he says no no we are not very happy I said you can be happy but I'm not happy because we have one of the worst deals of any group we have one of the worst deals with the European Union and they just didn't want to come because they were happy with the deal.
I said, but we're not happy with the deal and finally, after going through a whole process, I said, look, we're just going to put a 20% tax on all the millions of Mercedes and BMWs, all the millions and millions of cars. They are not allowed to sell to our farmers, they are not allowed to sell there many of their products, a large part of their products, most of them, which is why I announced that we are going to impose a 20 percent tariff, it could be 25 percent on their cars. I walked in and they immediately called and said we would like to start negotiations and we are having a successful negotiation, we will see what happens, who knows, I always say who knows, but we will see, I have a feeling we will be successful.
A pillar of national security is economic security and trade. National security is not what we lose hundreds of billions of dollars a year for the last five years. We have had an average loss of eight hundred billion dollars a year in trade. What nonsense those eight hundred billion dollars are! This group doesn't know about those numbers, I don't even want them to hear those numbers, but the United States and its trade agreements have lost on average almost $800 billion a year relative to China, relative to the European Union, Europe, with everyone, Japan. Mexico, Canada, all of them and we are not going to allow that to happen.
Its additional base and manufacturing sector are truly essential ingredients for national security. We cannot allow what has been happening for the last 25 years to happen. We are building our military like never before it will be the strongest it has ever been and all those planes being made and rockets and missiles and ships are being made in the United States jobs our economy is booming like never before unemployment claims are in a 50-year low, the stock market is at an all-time high, think about that, more than 50 percent since my election, 50 percent of people have 401k and they have 401k and they were dying with them for years and now they are so happy that I was telling the story.
I often talk about a policeman in New York. His wife was always very angry with him as an investor because she was not doing well with the 401k plan. Now she thinks he's a genius because the numbers are so crazy, but we're on top. 50% since the election and you have heard me say this many times, but African American unemployment Asian unemployment Hispanic unemployment is at historic lows in history, they do not know the history of our country for the last two years Young African American Asian Hispanics without high school diplomas secondary school everything in historic is a very important sector everything in historic lows the lowest in history is really something great this is helping a lot to get people out of prison we have a tremendous problem people get out of prison if they can' they don't get a job employers don't want to hire them the economy is so good they are hiring them and they are turning out to be amazing workers they gave them a chance they really give them a second chance in some cases a third chance but many employers have told me: "I'll tell you what I've "We've taken people who were in prison, we've hired them, he wouldn't have done this in a normal economy or a bad economy, just in this type of situation." an economy and now he's like the biggest fan, one man in particular has chosen numerous people, he said, most of them have been incredible, you could ask most of us, but most of them have been incredible, that's a great thing, It's a really great thing, it gives you a chance, so before answering questions, I want to express our deepest condolences to the country of Indonesia, my friend, let's call the leader, who is a great leader, but he was hit by a giant tsunami like people haven't seen. this part of the world hasn't seen it as much fortunately they say it's the worst of all you look at the tornadoes the hurricanes you look at all the different natural disasters my friend who studies natural disasters I don't know why he does that, but he does it, this suit says that The tsunami is the worst of all and they were hit very hard and probably thousands of people died.
We have already sent many first responders, military and others to help, but it is a really bad situation. And finally, before I close, I want to send our thoughts and prayers to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting, which was a horrible moment in the life of our country and which took place exactly one year ago. Today, all of America is mourning the lives lost and the families they left behind, so to all those families and the people of Las Vegas, we love you, we are with you, we are working very hard with you. It was a terrible, terrible event, so thank you very much for that.
I want to ask. bobwhite Howser who is just a great person and a man who knows too much about the subject to come up and say a word about the US MCA the new agreement and if you have any questions we will answer some questions later please ask them before starting. I'd just like to give a bullet point because I think he says something about working for the president, so on August 16 of last year we started. In this process, I will go to the hotel in Washington and there will be hundreds and hundreds of people waiting to introduce me and my two counterparts, one from Canada, one from the United States, and they are lining up for me and I get a call saying that the president wants to talk to you, so I walk into the little room, I pick up the cell phone, the president starts talking and everyone is like waiting and he talks and he's going over what he wants done in NAFTA and all of us are quite familiar with his problems with that and then he finally says two things that I thought they were saying: one he said Bob, I'll back you up like no other USTR has ever been backed up in history and then the second he did that.
By the way, and then the second thing he said was he said, now go out and have fun. I thought it probably won't be as fun since my size that I'll be living next to you, but I'm proud to be next to you. Team and I really look forward to encouraging you to follow it through this and other business changes, as you have said, Mr. President, this agreement is historic in many ways. The MCA will easily cover $1.2 trillion, making it the largest deal in history. We have done this in 14 months and believe me, the terms of trade negotiations are like breakneck speed.
When we began these negotiations last year, the instructions the president gave me were precise and direct to protect the United States. Workers fight for our farmers and ranchers to preserve America's competitive advantage in innovation, ensure greater access for our companies and, above all, bring jobs back to the United States. I think we have been successful with this agreement. The MCA will accelerate the manufacturing renaissance our country has enjoyed under President Trump, bring our trade relationship with Mexico and Canada into the 21st century, and protect America's competitive advantage in digital and innovation across the economy. The new agreement will also serve as a model. for our trade agreements under the Trump business the Trump administration in the future this paradigm shift model is based on three pillars the first pillar is fairness we have negotiated stricter rules of origin for cars that will bring in billions of dollars of manufacturing Back in the United States we have ensured greater market access for our farmers and ranchers.
We have agreed to unprecedented labor standards that will help level the playing field for our workers. We have also agreed to a first-of-its-kind review and severance provision that will ensure that the US MCA, unlike NAFTA, will not become unbalanced or obsolete. The second pillar will consist of a series of ambitious provisions on digital trade. Intellectual property services, including financial services designed to protect our competitive advantage. The third pillar will consist of new provisions designed to eliminate unfair practices. business practices including strong new disciplines on state-owned enterprises, currency manipulation relationships with non-market economies, and much more, we would not be here today if it were not for several people who contributed so much to this effort, first the key advisor to the president and My good friend Jared Kushner was my partner in the leadership of the United States. negotiating team.
I have said it before and I will say it again. This deal wouldn't have happened if it weren't for. I would like to thank my counterparts, Secretary Guardo and Minister Freeland, as well as other officials from the governments of Mexico and Canada, including Secretary Vida. Gray and CIA Ambassador Gerry Butts and Katie Telford of Canada and many more. I would also like to thank the wonderful staff at USTR, many of whom are here. I like to think of us a little bit like we're the Marine Corps and so on. I especially like the name of this agreement.
The USTR has about 250 people and they are all dedicated and exceptional and work 24 hours a day. Many of the people you're seeing have spent more than one night in office over the course of the last few weeks and they have tremendous capabilities and this president has finally unleashed them. I would like to thank President Trump that his leadership vision and determination made this agreement possible. No other person could have done it. The benefit for millions of Americans. years to come because of this vision and probably even more importantly this courage thank you sir thank you very much thank you very much thank you some questions yes Steve asks thank you sir have you had tensions with Prime Minister Trudeau yes how did that affect your ability to close this deal No I think it was like that he is a professional I am a professional we had very strong tensions it was simply unfair treatment whether it was Mexico or Canada and now it is fair treatment for everyone it is very different Heagreement is a completely new agreement, it is not a renewal of NAFTA, it is a completely new agreement.
I just spoke with them, we have an excellent relationship, but we are going to work as partners, do not forget that the rest of the world is looking to take advantage of us and as a region you could say and we are going to work very closely with Canada and with Mexico because we will be able to compete with anyone we have we have things that no one else says we have energy that no one else has We have wood that no one else has, we have things that no other part of the world has to the extent that we have them, so we will do very well together.
I think there was a lot of tension, I'll say, between him and I think more specifically and everything turned out well, you know what ended last night around 12 o'clock and you mentioned me, but he's a good man, he's done a good job, he loves people from Canada, you mentioned the impossible 267 billion more. tariffs on China, what does China need to do to avoid that? Well, we'll see what happens with China. We have lost $375 billion in trade deficit. They have a surplus of 375 billion dollars with a problem with the United States and that is how it has been.
For years and years and years I always say we rebuilt China, they took that money and they built fighter planes and they built bridges, they built more bridges than we've built in the last hundred years, probably big ones like the George Washington Bridge, like big bridges. and I'm not going to accept you, don't look, I don't blame China, I blame our leaders, they should have never allowed that to happen and I told President Xi that. I told him, you know, he was giving a speech in China and he was really hitting China hard and I'm in China.
I don't know if that's a good thing, but I looked at him. I said, but you know, I don't really blame you. I blame our leadership for allowing this to happen. He knew exactly. What he meant was that we did not have any agreement with China. I asked one of the most important people in China. A top-level representative came to the Oval Office. I said, "leave me." I ask you how this happened. He's a professional, so he understands enough to be cute. He said no one ever did anything from the United States when we put a 25% tariff on every car that comes from the United States to China, we thought we would. to be reprimanded we would be terrible, no one ever called, no one did anything, that was years ago, and we didn't charge them anything two and a half, but we don't charge it, we do it now, by the way, but we don't charge both. and a half so they charge twenty-five we charge essentially nothing but I said how it happened he said no one ever called we don't have an agreement with China there is no agreement they do what they want so we have a tremendous problem with the theft of intellectual property with China, we have many others problems with China, we mainly have trade problems and, as you know, they are going through much more difficult times now.
I don't want them to go through hard times and we're We're doing better than ever, everyone was talking about the tariffs, so the tariffs, the tariffs, you know, the tariffs ended in 1913 and then they went to a different system in 1918, without any relationship and then in 1928 we had the Great Depression for many different reasons. It's not necessarily our countries fault, but our countries kind of fall and then in the 1930s they said we better start charging some tariffs, we need money to go back to our country, okay, so I'm not defending the duty. I'll tell you this, our steel industry.
Wilbur is stronger than he has been in 25 years, this took six months because he got paid for the dump trucks that were dumping steel and aluminum into our country. He charged 25 percent, that's a lot, it could be more, but that's a lot, and if you look at us. Steel and Nucor just announced a billion-dollar plant. The new construction has already begun. US Steel is building eight or nine plants. They are expanding plants. I don't think there is any industry like what happened to steel in the last nine months. Ten months ago. I really started doing what I'm doing.
Aluminum has been really amazing too, and we still need steel for defense. What are we going to do? Let's go and say, "Oh, we'll get our steel like it's from another country that we can't get from." That? Sorry, we can't do that, so we need steel and we need it badly for defense. I am very proud of what happened to the steel industry. Okay, ask. Yeah, go ahead, I'm sure she's surprised that I chose her. No, it's like in a. state of shock I'm not thanking you, okay, I know you're not thanking me, you never do, sorry, no, go ahead, go ahead, a tweet this weekend, mr.
President, you said that it is incorrect to say that you are limiting the scope of the FBI investigation, what does that have to do with it? Well, I don't mind answering the question, but you know I'd like to exchange it with the other one. headline in the news that it's Kendall, but I know, but how about we talk about trade and then we'll get to that. We'll do it a little later. You believe that anyone who has a trade agreement, their trade agreement will go through Congress, sir. I think so, but you know, if not, we have many other alternatives, but I think so.
I think if they're fair, which is a big question, but if it's fair on both sides, the Republicans love it, the industry loves it, our country loves it. If it is fair, it will be approved. I think it will pass easily, very easily because it is a great agreement. I mean, NAFTA passed. It's one of the worst deals I've ever seen. Inconceivable. It became fair. Ask. Any other question. Excellent. I will do that. I will contact you on the other page. I would like to continue with my question about Cavanaugh. Let's do it later and we'll call you a second time.
Go ahead, thank you very much. Thank you Mr. President, you have described India right now as a father, if King can explain it a little later, all the charges from India are tremendous tariffs when we ship Harley Davidson motorcycles, other things to India, they charge very, very high tariffs and I have spoken to Prime Minister Modi and he is going to reduce them very substantially nobody ever spoke to these people said nobody ever spoke to me in other words we have had leaders here I'm not, you know, trying to be overly dramatic We have had Presidents of the United States and Trade Representatives with whom they never spoke with India, Brazil, another one that is a beauty, they charge us whatever they want if you ask some of the companies, they say that Brazil is among the toughest in the world , maybe the toughest in the world, we don't call them and say, "Hey, you're treating our companies unfairly, you're treating our companies unfairly, so India is a very tall tree, they really charged tremendously high tariffs on motorcycles, "It was 100 percent, so you send a motorcycle to India, now there's a 100 percent tariff." so high that it is like a barrier in other words, who is going to buy it, of course, so high now that they have already reduced it substantially, but it is still too high.
My relationship with India is excellent, with Prime Minister Modi it is excellent and they are going to start doing a lot they have already done it they called us to make a deal we didn't even call them they called us to make a deal which is kind of shocking for people yeah sir go ahead yes well I don't know, here we go I have a second question about the Kavanagh matter, if when you come back to it, if you do it, will you do it now no, no, okay, well, the question I have to try about the trade, the question I have about trade, does this mean an end to tariffs, if you could explain it, you know Canada, you know, you know steel stays where aluminum is, but does it mean that probably for the most part we won't have We have to use tariffs unless we can't reach an agreement with the country, for example, if we cannot reach an agreement with the European Union, we will respectfully impose tariffs so that the cars that the United States receives billions and billions of dollars in their coffers may not be so nice because you can't hear it, that doesn't happen the second, okay, yes, the second, but it will cost billions of dollars, but in reality what is going to happen is that they will manufacture the cars in the United States of America.
This way, they won't have to pay 25 or 20 percent taxes and could you spell I don't think you'll have to use terrorists too often, but there will be cases where there will be countries that just aren't willing at all. to do what is fair and reciprocal and in that case will they do it? pay tariffs and you know what the United States will do very well either way we are doing very well, so do you think it will be approved in Canada, Mexico and more importantly, I don't know here in the United States? Very respected presidents and in the case of Canada the Prime Minister is satisfied with the agreement it is good for Canada good for Mexico it is good for the three of us this is an agreement they do not promote me this is good for the three of them that is good and that fact alone makes it It's good for us but This is good for all three of us, but it's a very different agreement than NAFTA and it's much more of a reciprocal agreement for the United States, which is really good, yeah, go ahead, Peter, no, why don't we Do you ask Cavanaugh's questions?
You talk about being treated harshly, we'll do it in a couple of minutes because there are a lot of people who want to run to the Wall Street Journal and start writing, go ahead, please, I can't hear you, I'm Mexican. journalist, go ahead, I'm sure that's the case, you are going to keep the tariffs on steel and aluminum in Mexico and Canada until we can do something that is different, like quotas, maybe so that our industry is protected, we are not going to allow that our steel industry disappeared, it had almost disappeared. I will tell you that if our country had continued as it was in two years, you would not have had a steel industry, we have to have a steel industry, we have to have an aluminum industry.
I know there are certain major industries, so we're working on that now, that wasn't part of this, but we will do something indeed, Bob, if you want, you can say a couple of words about that because we're literally talking about it. An hour ago Thank you sir. President, I guess I would say, first of all, that there are two separate things as far as we are concerned, we know that there is great interest in both countries and we are engaging in conversations now with an effort to try to preserve the effect of our program and continue taking care of their needs and hopefully we can resolve it, but we are in communication with them and we really take care of the needs of our steel companies.
I don't want them to close plants, they are hiring thousands of people. workers from all over the country, I am not going to give up on that, but you have your students as president-elect López Obrador who will keep his word and destroy, we have a very good understanding, yes, very good, yes, sir, go ahead, please favor. I am mr. President I just hope you can reiterate on the tariffs what it would take specifically for Canada or Mexico to be exempt from these tariffs and secondly, did you consider dairy to be the deciding factor? Yes, I came to buy dairy it was a decisive factor and now for our farmers it is as you know, substantially it opened much more and I know that they cannot open it completely, their farmers also you know that they cannot be invaded and I tell them completely and I tell them Look, I understand they have limits, but they could do a lot. better and we have opened it up to our farmers, so the people of Wisconsin I will tell you what I went to Wisconsin.
I went to Iowa. Joni knows this better than anyone and Scott Walker, who I think is a fantastic governor, talks about it. all the time that Canada did not treat our farmers properly, now they will be treated with respect, they will be treated fairly or as I say, in that reciprocal way, very important, yes sir, go ahead, thank you sir. President Seba sir was a give and take for both sides in this deal. I wonder what would be, in his opinion, his greatest concession to Canada and why he decided to make concession number two if I could delve a little deeper into his thoughts.
About Justin Trudeau you talked about tensions. I'm wondering what you've learned through this process about him and what the status of your relationship is with him today, and going forward, I think my biggest concession would be to make the deal because we're the one that people come to and want to take advantage of. . I'm talking about all countries and it gives us a tremendous advantage in negotiation that we never used before with the previous administration, we never used it. Every deal we have is a loser every day. Almost every country in the world, almost every country, we have trade deficits, we lose to everyone, so I think my biggest concession was making the deal because we could have done it differently, but it would have been unpleasant and it wouldn't have been pleasant. and I don't want us to have a great relationship with Canada.
I think now it will be better than ever. The only problem with Justin is that he loves his people and fights hard for his people. I think we do too. I know we've always had a very good relationship, he got a little testy in the last few months, but that was because of this agreement and I understand that, but no, I think Justin is a good person who is doing a good job. he worked he felt very committed to his people and that is what he did and again this is good for everyone this is good for Canada good for Mexico also yes yes forPlease keep going Thank you sir.
President, as you mentioned, you will sign this agreement and your counterparts will sign this agreement starting in the next 60 days, then it is up to Congress, right? You are very confident. I understand that you are not sure of anything. I'm sure I'm not welcome. Why do you think they tell me that? If you are calm, you decide to tell me. I think they will. Congress is controlled by Democrats. It could happen. It could happen. Then they are ready to pay their respects. Yes, they could. be willing to make one of the big deals for the people and the workers, they might be willing to do it for political people, you know people or for political purposes because, frankly, you know they're going to have 20/20 in mind so far.
I dream of 20/20 when I look at what is happening, they have 20/20 in mind, they want to do the best they can and therefore trying to reject even big deals like this is a great deal for our country, great for other countries, but it is a It is a great thing for our country and excellent for our worker. I cannot tell you whether they will obstruct or not, whether they will resist or not. I mean, their whole campaign is to resist. I see their signs, they all resist, they don't even know what they are doing. You're resisting if you ask them what you're resisting, let me think they can't ask, they had someone this weekend, they said what are you resisting and they couldn't answer the question, so you know, I can't tell you. about delay obstruct resist because you know right after this election and I think we'll do well even though history is not on our side.
I guess in history, in general, whoever has the White House doesn't do well in the midterm elections, but hey, the only difference is we have the largest economy in the history of our country. I think that's a big difference and that's also one of our problems because the people who came out and voted for me would vote for me if I was on the list, but I'm not. on the ballot but Congress is on the ballot and I try to tell my people that it's the same as me in a sense it's the same think it's the same as me but I think we'll do well, actually I think I mean, we have Senate races that weren't even in play six months ago, when I started taking a closer look at them.
I won't mention names, but there were senators who weren't in the game, they weren't even there and you know exactly what I'm doing. speaking of a lot of them, they weren't in play, in other words let's not go here, novaya to this state, four or five states now there are close races in one case, they are up two points now, who knows what that means and you You know, as you know, that there are many of them, are we surveys of repression or surveys that are not? It's not very accurate because I see polls where I know that our failures have to do with certain races, but we had areas and seats in Congress where I know it will be a positive result, but if you look at what's happening, it doesn't seem to happen. convey that way, but I certainly had that with my election, I was told I was in trouble in certain states and I ended up winning in a big prize.
I would like it in a landslide and I knew I was going to win them in a landslide, but they wouldn't report it that way, you know why the fake news is well behind you, if you think the trade deal will be a big issue in the US election midterm, it shouldn't be, it's a good deal. People you know when I first did it said, oh, why don't you just extend NAFTA? They have no idea about business. Simply extending it after that would have been a disaster. We're losing a hundred billion dollars a year in deficits, at least at least. to Mexico under NAFTA, but just look at the results and a substantial amount to tell, although a lot of people try and say it's practically even, we don't even lose a substantial amount, so I think it's a very difficult thing to defend, but it's okay Look, I understand the world, politics, I think as well as anyone.
I haven't been doing it for a long time, but I've actually done it because I've been doing it on the other side and I understand it and you know they can take. It's the best thing ever done and I try to make it sound as bad as possible, but this is what people are coming out for this and saying it's amazing what we've been able to do, yes, behind you please. Thank my Lord. President, now that you have answered several questions about trade, I would like to turn it over to you, do you have a question about trade?
Well, one or two more questions. Okay, don't do that. It's not nice, plus someone is before you. Sorry, don't do that, do you have any questions about trading? answered several questions about the trade. my question is about he, please, yes, he said that the FBI should interview whoever they think is appropriate. Does that include Julie Sweat, Nick, the third accuser and Can you promise to release the full finding? Give me your question. Make sure they finish their report. Mr. President, give me a question, please give him the microphone, thank you very much, what is border security, our financing there, so while we discuss the negotiation and who will pay, yes, what we are going to receive, 1.6 billion for the wall this year, we got 1.6 1.6.
We have about 3.2 billion on the wall, we are doing a lot of work, people don't realize. I don't really want to talk because I can build it quickly in one go, which is what I want, but we've been building it. for the last year and a half with 3.2 billion one six one six, now we have another one six and I have to make a big decision after the election whether we will do it or not because you know what border security The people of our country are very important. The wall is an important factor in border security and I truly believe that the people of our country want the wall and they want border security.
He doesn't want open borders like the ones the Democrats want to have. They don't want crime to come to our country, they don't want MS-13 to come to our country, they don't want that and I really think I have to make a very important decision at some point right after the election, very quickly, because you know what's coming again after the election, I want to do it before the election personally, yes, but I don't want to do it for a different reason because I have some very good people who are running in close races and it may or may not affect them.
It might be good for them. I think it would be good for them, but border security for our country. Our people want security. The women of our country want security. They don't want to have thousands of people cross the border. I'll tell you what they want to have ice because ice comes into MS-13 and these gangs and they treat them like it's just another day at the office, they're tough and they love our country and they love me. I'm treating the ice right and I'm treating our law enforcement right and the Democrats don't want to take care of our law enforcement and the Democrats don't want to take care of our military, so we're going to have to make a decision. at some point right after, very close to the end of the elections and that will be about border security and the wall, but border security, the wall is an important factor, okay, part of the conversation and negotiation, yes, It was yes, we talked about it with Mexico, we talked about it, it was an important part and certain things and certain understandings are had at the same time, we don't want to mix it up too much, this is a very important issue and a very good agreement for everyone, except the border security and security in general is a very important factor, sometimes we also have drugs and some people would say that it is something very similar, but we talk about drugs with Mexico, that is a very, very important factor, very, very important, we have very good understandings and we will be discussing that with them, thank you, okay, but it was absolutely a factor and in the deal, okay, come on, will you?
I guess quit trading. I don't know, people are falling asleep with the trade. I think that for me is the most exciting thing. What you can talk about, right, Joni, right, okay, it's correct to say that you are limiting the scope of the FBI investigation into Judge Cavanaugh, but your own statement on Friday made it very clear that you said that this investigation must have a limited scope, so what is it? Well, no, I didn't say anything on Friday, what I said is let the Senate decide what they want to do, that's fine with me and fine with the FBI.
I think the FBI should do what they have to do to get to the answer at the same time. time for us all to understand that this is our seventh investigation of a man who really knows, look at his life until this happened, what change has happened, what his family has gone through, the trauma for a man who has never had no accusation. he's never had a bad statement about him, he's led him, I mean, I think he was number one in his class at Yale, he was number one in his law school at Yale and then what happened over the last three weeks is incredible, so I want the FBI this is now their seventh investigation, so it's not like, you know, just getting started.
I want them to do a very thorough investigation, whatever that means according to the senators, the Republicans and the Republican majority. I want you to do that. Be thorough. In fact, I think it's a good thing for Judge Kevin or I think it's actually a good thing, not a bad thing. I think it's a good thing now, that being said, I would like it to be fast and the reason why I would like it. to go fast very simple it is so simple because it is unfair to him right now what his wife is going through what his beautiful children are going through is not describable it is not describable it is not fair I think it is fair to do it to me because you I know that I have Been going since day one.
I've been hurt a lot before I got to the office. You've been doing it. It has almost become. I think for me it's like part of my job description to handle this shit, but to the extent possible. To the extent that this is a man, this is not of his world and you know what happens if he is not wanted and I think it would be a shame if he is with him all the time, I mean a charge made or said. They happened 36 years ago and nothing has happened since then and look, I feel bad for all the parties, I feel bad for everyone, I feel bad for our country, this is so bad for our country, but I will tell you that I saw those senators on the Democratic side and I thought it was a shame and partly because I know them, I know them too well and you know what they are not angels.
Are you saying your White House has put no limitations on no? My White House is doing what the senators want. No, I'm not interviewing you. You don't understand what I'm saying, you understand, you just don't want to report it that way, just so you understand, my white house will do whatever the senators want, open to whatever they want, the only thing I want to speed up now. It started, I think Friday might have even been a little bit earlier, but they started, they worked 24 hours a day on Saturday, Sunday, they're working right now, I mean, they're covering a lot of territory, this is the judge's seventh investigation.
Cavanaugh number seven, this is not number one, they started on Friday, they worked all weekend, they went late into the night, the FBI is working very hard and they are putting in a lot of hours, so I hope they can find what that we are all looking for but no, the Senate guides me. I want to make the Senate happy because, ultimately, they are making the judgment. I'm not passing judgment. I've already made my judgment. The Senate is passing judgment on Judge Cavanaugh. something very important to do, yes, go ahead, Peter, okay, but I'm instructing you based on what I think the Senate wants the Senate to make this decision and I'm instructing you based on what the Senate is looking for for clarity.
The House lawyer, Don Magán, gives the FBI free rein to interview whoever he deems necessary. That's what I ordered and I did it again over the weekend because I see that the press said that I don't want to use the misleading word in this case. It's a much more complex issue than anyone would understand and then most people understand, but essentially I've done it, but I also said that within the limits of what the Senate wants, we don't want to continue using an expression that is used frequently. I for one don't want to go on a witch hunt, so just to be clear, if the FBI interviews all three of Brett Cavanaugh's accusers, I wouldn't mind at all now it depends.
I don't know the three. occasional three, I'm sure they're going to interview two of the third, I don't know much, but it wouldn't bother me at all, I mean, they've heard me say that the third has I have no idea if this is true, it has very little credibility, if there is any credible interview, the third, but I want to interview I wanted it to be done quickly because it is unfair for the family and for the judge it is unfair it is very unfair for his children and his wife what about the accusers, has this process been fair for them?
Well, we certainly gave the doctor a tremendous amount of time, which is great, she spoke well, but you know there are some questions that haven't been answered, like what year was it, what day was it, where did she go. you know the location you know the house a lot of different things that people say well you know what's going on with all that you can't say we've done anything but berespectful and I and I do and I respect your position I think I very much respect your position and again these are the Republican senators and this is the Senate.
I think they have been very respectful to Dr. Dr. Ford, isn't that why the FBI should interview all of them to exonerate Peter? I think the FBI should interview anyone they want within reason, but it has to be said that, within reason, they should interview, but they should also be guided and I am being guided. so the senators are looking because they have to make the decision going forward, now you can go if Brett Kavanaugh is interviewed by the FBI oh, I think so. I think it's fine if they do it. I don't know, that's up to them, I guess. that he spoke very conclusively and very well.
I think it has been a very difficult period. I guarantee you he has never had a period like this when he was elected. Everyone was like, “Oh, this is going to happen so fast.” Look, people thought ten years ago that Brett Kavanaugh was going to be a Supreme Court justice because of his intellect, because of his career, because of the fact that there are no games, you know, now they talk about alcohol, they talk about all the things that you listen and, frankly, you take a look at it. when they brought it up, we would know about this for the last twenty years, thirty years of his career, you know what happened with him coming back to high school and they say he drank too much one night in high school, you know, I tell you what it turns out I know some United States senators, one who is on the other side and who is quite aggressive.
I have seen that person in very bad situations. Well, I have seen that person in very, very bad situations, somewhat compromising and you know, I think he is very unfair. to bring up things like this, however, whatever the senators want is fine with me, they are going to make a decision, whatever they want is fine with me, go ahead, enough is enough, please say it. I think the press has treated me incredibly. unfairly in fact when I won I said the good thing is that now the press finally understands now they will finally treat me fairly they got worse they are worse than ever they are crazy but it's okay I put up with it, go ahead I use that word because of the fact that we made a deal with Mexico, so no, no, please, sit down, you'll be next, go ahead, first with Judge Cavanaugh.
Now there is concern that he lied or mischaracterized his drinking while he was testifying, if I found out that he did, do you think that prevents him from being your Supreme Court nominee? Well, I've seen it, I looked at it. He surprised me how vocally he talked about the fact that he likes beer and he's had a little difficulty, I mean, he talked. about the things that happened when he drank I mean this is not a man who said there was no alcohol he was perfect about alcohol no I thought he actually went back so many years I thought he was excellent The interesting thing is that although no one asked him what happened in the last 2530 years during his professional career, because there were no bad reports, I mean, there are bad reports on everyone who is here, most of the people sitting there bet, except for Mike Pence, by the way and if we find one about him, then I think that will be the biggest shock, revolta, I know there are bad reports about everyone.
I'm looking at people. I'm looking at some of these people. asking the questions okay, look at Blumenthal, he lied about Vietnam, he didn't just say, hey, I went to Vienna, no, for fifteen years, he said he was a war hero, he fought in Da Nang province, we call him Da Nang Richard Da Nang, that's his Nickname Da Nang, never went to Vietnam and he's up there saying we need honesty and integrity. This guy lied when he was Attorney General of Connecticut, he lied, I don't mean a little bit, and then when he got out, he actually went down. he got out of the race and won anyway because Democrats always win in Connecticut.
He won very close, probably the closest of all time, but here's a guy who lied and now he's up there talking like he's holier than thou. You know, he looks at his history and when. He came out and when he apologized he was crying, tears were everywhere and now he acts like how dare you look at the judge who has led an exemplary life? I mean you went back to high school because he drank beer, I think. The judge has been quite surprising in describing his situation with alcohol and beer. I mean, take a look at Cory Booker.
He brought down Newark, New Jersey, he was a horrible mayor and he made statements that when he was in high school or college, what was he doing, he actually made the statements and now he's talking about the Judge Cavanaugh. I could go through a whole list of them. Well, look at Diane Feinstein, you're telling me it's about time Diane Feinstein knew about this two months early if she wanted a really thorough explanation. investigation we had all the time in the world she didn't have to wait until the hearing was closed essentially she should have said listen I have a problem I have this report I would like the FBI to review it while we are making the earrings we had two months no she didn't That, she waited until we closed and then she probably leaked it, but you know, who am I to say, but she probably leaked it based on some really bad body language the other day, but in a sense, the most important thing is that she have waited that period of time and now for you Democrats, and I guess I'm including you in the media.
I consider you part of the Democratic Party, but for you, Democrats must speak. we want more time for the FBI if you wanted more time for the FBI why didn't Diane Feinstein mention this? Now you know she showed this to other Democrats. She's not the only one who showed this to other Democrats who were more than just. she who knew about this big confidential thing was confidential until the hearing was over after the hearing was over they made it public why didn't they do it during the hearing and we could have had all the time in the world you know why because they Re dishonest people Okay, yes, please, my question, Mr.
President, so if he lied about his drinking, does that mean you're going to get him out? I don't think she did it. Look, yeah, this is what I'm just saying. I'm not a drinker. I can honestly say I've never had a beer in my life okay, right, it's one of my only good traits. I don't drink anything. They're looking for something I said. I never had a glass of alcohol. I have never drunk alcohol. Just, you know, for whatever reason, can you imagine? If I had what a disaster it would be, it would be the worst in the world, but I never drank, I never drank, okay, but I can tell you that I

watch

ed that hearing and I saw a man say that he had difficulties when he was young. man with drink the only question I didn't ask is how about in the last 20 years have you had a hard time in the last 20 years because no one said anything bad about him in many years they went back to high school?
You know, I graduated from high school? and while I wasn't drinking I saw a lot of people drinking, they drink beer and they go crazy and you know they were in high school they were 16 17 years old and I saw a lot of that, does that mean they can? They don't do something they want to do with their life, so it's a very difficult thing. I really think he was very strong in the fact that he drank a lot, so I don't know where there would be a big discrepancy. Yes, go ahead. Please can you promise me that he knows he's really had enough, he's had enough?
Go ahead please, thank you mr. Chief Justice Cavanaugh said Democrats were attacking him. Has it made the process too political? How can you assure the American people that they will be able to make impartial decisions? Well, he'll have to ask you that question, but I can tell him. He has been treated horribly. He is a good man. He is a good man with a great family. I think he's been treated horribly. Who is going to want to run for office? Being in office. Taking an appointment to have not only the Supreme Court, but you know, many positions that I have right now. 360 people who are not being approved.
They are very qualified. No one is saying they are not qualified. but Senator Schumer doesn't approve them because of a tough filibuster, it's much longer than ever in the history of our country, I think twice as long, almost, it's a lot more people than anyone in the history of our country, the majority Of those people are routine approvals, these are people. who gave up their jobs, they gave up their lives to come serve our country and Schumer and his group want to show them that they are slow, everything goes to 30 hours, which means that they take them out for 30 hours, person who is going to be approved, it is a shame.
So when the judge mentions whether it's politics or not, I don't know, you'd have to ask him, but I can tell he's been treated very, very horrible, but can you continue, please, I'm not worried, no, no. I know what I'm worried about, that we have great people on the US Supreme Court, that's what I'm worried about and I want to have great people and I don't want to have to call people into any courtroom and have them say, sir, that en It's a great honor, but no, thank you, I just can't do it, I just can't do it.
It would be a sad day for our country and we will get closer to that because now I know people who say no. I don't know how he does it. I don't know why he would have taken it, no one knew that something like this could have happened when when Justice, now Justice Gorsuch, was approved, it was tough, but none of that is what they are doing to him. man and what they are inventing and in many cases inventing because, as you know, many stories were withdrawn and certain stories were withdrawn that were horrible, what they are doing to this man and his family is very, very sad and very bad . for our nation yes mr.
President, you just said that some senators are not angels and you have seen some of them and I would say that some of them are, a compromising situation yes, could you tell us who and exactly what situation? No, no, I think I'll save it for a book like everyone else and write, okay, I won't give it to you, yes, please go ahead, mr. President, if the FBI finds other witnesses who can corroborate the account of any of the accusers, that would be enough for you. I would. I would definitely check to see if I'm open. I am open.
I think he is a good man. I think he's great. scholar I believed him a lot when he said what he did, he focused on being number one at Yale, on being number one in high school, on being number one in Law, he focused. I can understand it, I mean, it was like that. Importantly the way he said it had an impact on me, I was so focused on being number one at Yale and I think he was number one of you, but I understood it very well and wanted to ask about something else he mentioned. today, the shooting in Las Vegas, yes, there is some frustration that more has not been done in the last year not more has been done about the bagel stock or there is Louie, no, no, what you are wrong about, like this that to eliminate the booster stocks we have to go through a procedure, we are now in the final stages of that procedure, in fact the lawyers had just told me that and over the next few weeks I will be able to write it down, but you can't just write it down because the Rules and regulations in this country are really strict even for something like that, so we're eliminating talk about punches.
I told the NRA. I told him that what is a coup stinks of a weapon, but to do it you have to go to public hearings. We've had to go through all kinds of regulatory control systems and we're in the last few weeks and I'll be somewhere with our lawyer, please, he said we're in the final, we're in the last two or two. Three weeks and I will be able to write the strokes, but it is a process that is required by law, it takes about a year to do it and do it correctly. The other actions you are planning to help prevent, yes, and we are working on them as well.
With Congress on both sides, we are working on a lot of different things and that was a horrible thing, but we are working on both sides of that issue and the reinforcement stock is almost depleted, but again to do it, so it is significant, the lawyer just To say it, yes, we have gone through a whole procedure. If you look, you could actually call Derek, who you know very well, and he went through the whole procedure. We have done it absolutely by the rules and in a very short period of time it will be ruled out.
Okay, yes, he's had one. Yes ma'am. Come in, please, please, sit down. President, one last trade question, given that the steel and aluminum tariffs will not be reduced from Canada and Mexico, can you talk about whether there was any discussion about ending those retaliatory tariffs against you? Well, it's not retaliation, they're actually trying to get some Really bad things happened, they were dumping in our country, it was China and several others were dumping massive amounts of dead steel. It's called dead steel. It is also imperfect steel. Inside that steel there were a lot of bad things that make the steel weaker when we.
We're building bridges and you have steel clay or you have other amounts of other material in that steel, that's a very bad thing, it's very unsafe, so it's not just economic, you know, the miners have been very grateful for what I've given you. made. I saw that the other night in West Virginia and we have metallurgical coal andother materials, we have mines that are opening now to get those incredible things, this is not used for heating or cooling, it is used electrical, it is used to make steel and those. Now mines are opening and we are making steel and the price is not going to end up being lower because we don't have shipping problems when you send it from such far away places, you will see that we will have hundreds.
Many new plants were opened in our country and they will compete with each other and those outside will not be able to compete just so you understand what was going to happen, they were going to destroy all the steel plants that we had and then we are going to double and triple the price and We couldn't have done anything about it, it's a very dangerous thing and we've employed a lot of people and now billions of dollars are flowing into our treasury, okay, yes, in the back place, please stay here. As for trading, the stock market liked today's announcement when we came in here, the Dow Jones was up about 250 points, there are some who are worried that because of the threat of future tariffs it could potentially stifle an economy that is in boom in the stock market. that's hot, but today you said "hello" again, when it comes to China, more tariffs could come in the future.
Are you concerned that you're potentially preventing this economy from continuing to function? No, I'm using them to negotiate and hopefully we can make a great deal with China, a fair and reciprocal deal, but a great deal and a fair deal, we have a lot of catching up to do with China, you know, when They drain us of 500 billion dollars a year, which is probably the true number and that's not including the theft of intellectual property and other things and a lot of people say let's talk about value but a lot of people say it could be 300 billion dollars a year No, we are using tariffs very successfully to negotiate and if we cannot reach a fair agreement then we will use tariffs, but Mexico and if you look at Mexico and Canada are much more Beyond that, we have an agreement that really works and the good thing about the deal we make with them is that it is not a specific product, it is a product of the entire line, whether it is dairy or, you know, a lot of prices, you see the list of products, there are many, many. products and they are all included, so it is generalized, mr.
President with China one more on trade if you don't mind, good sir. president and if the FBI finds something and Brett Kavanaugh falls for it, is there a plan B? I don't want to talk about plan B because I think I hope they approve it. I hope the report comes out as it should. I really believe it. I should think it will be, I hope, I hope, but look, I'm waiting like you, certainly, if they find something, I will absolutely take it into consideration. I have a very open mind, the person who takes that position will be there.
For a long time I have had a very open mind. I just think he is an exceptional person. I think they treated him horribly. Even if you were to mention some of the issues that were brought up, they didn't have to treat it with as much cruelty and violence as they have treated it in trade matters. Thank you all very much, thank you all very much. Okay, you've been

ing President Donald Trump deliver his comments about the trade deal that was reached at the last minute between the United States. United States, Canada and Mexico, the president spent the better part of nearly an hour talking about the trade deal and making some comments.
He also praised his business representatives, as well as the ambassador to Canada, who he said helped make the deal happen, as well as his son. his brother-in-law Jared Kushner, special counsel to the president, but he received a lot of questions toward the end of this impromptu press conference about Brett Kavanaugh and the path forward for Supreme Court nominees, say, as the FBI begins an investigation. on allegations that he sexually assaulted Dr. Christine Glossy Ford in the early 1980s Paula Reid joins us now was there during this press conference, so Paula certainly had a lot of questions about trade, but the president wanted to stick to the topic at hand, but then, of course, the questions about Brett Cavanaugh.
There are a couple of things that I found striking and interesting that, you know, that I wrote. It struck me that the president seemed to indicate that he was surprised by how much Brett Cavanaugh drank and said that he had never touched it. a drop of alcohol in his life and that he continued to say that or seemed to indicate that it caught his attention that Brett Kavanaugh had some kind of drinking problem. The other thing he said is that he thinks the FBI should interview Brett Kavanaugh. but I was going to leave it up to you.
I want to know your opinion, that's right, well, the big question of the day is whether the White House is putting any limitations on the extent to which the FBI can perform what is basically a supplemental background check. . and the president did not directly respond to the question of whether the White House had set any specific parameters in this regard, but what he said publicly was that he has no problem if they want to interview the three accusers. He has no problem if they want to interview Judge Cavanaugh. He just wants everything done to be done quickly, but Fionna has said that the White House is limiting them, that they have restrictions dictated by the White House, but here the president today in the Rose Garden says that he is not imposing no restrictions on whether it will do what the Senate wants, so ultimately the question now is: where does the FBI get its marching orders from?
Are you taking them from this podium in the Rose Garden or are you taking them from Don Magán, who we believe is the person who has been instructing you on how far you can go with this supplemental background check. It's an interesting question. Paula, wait. I want to bring Major Garrett, who will also be joining me from the Rose Garden. So older again. I'm surprised by the president who, as you know, like most Americans, he doesn't like to drink. Oh, he doesn't drink at all and in general he doesn't like people who drink, and I'm quoting the president here, he said, I can honestly say.
I've never had a beer in my life, but he said this too. I was surprised by Brett Cavanaugh's vocal significance, how vocal he spoke about the fact that he likes beer. He said he had been promoting the president. Had difficulty as a young man was drinking Brett Kavanaugh seemed to be trying to indicate otherwise or convey otherwise when he was sitting in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee and what the president was trying to do is say he was speaking, meaning he was willing to discuss it. . therefore, he did not contradict himself or say something that under oath could later be refuted, meaning he was lying under oath, which would be in most White Houses an important issue to consider for someone nominated for a lifetime appointment in the Supreme Court of the United States, the president also got into a rather rambling discussion about other people in the Senate, perhaps here in the Rose Garden, who might be in trouble, who might be in trouble, of course, none of those individuals nominated for a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court of the United States, and this really is kind.
An underlying question is that during the campaign and during the nomination of President Neo Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, Trump and Canada, Trump said that the Supreme Court is a very special place, the highest standards apply well if the highest standards apply. high and there are things that you said. under sworn testimony that other people who say that there are eyewitnesses to his behavior, for example, excessive drinking, say that he is lying or that those things are not true, is that by itself disqualifying the president never reached that answer and this creates a possible uncomfortable nexus for the White House because if the president says well that yes, he seemed to have a problem with alcohol and there are witnesses who say that Brett Kavanaugh could become aggressive and sometimes disoriented from drinking too much alcohol, that undermines his general denial of any of these allegations of sexual misconduct or sexual assault, this is very sensitive ground both as a matter of law and of process and possibly as a matter of policy, but I would say that these are the two most important messages sent by this House White Today and President Trump was quickly and Cavanaugh has been treated horribly and brutally, which means the process has been unfair to him and he wants the FBI to act as quickly as possible; those things still indicate that this White House hopes and believes in an FBI report in the not too distant future and the Senate Republicans also moved forward with the Kavanagh nomination sooner rather than later and two other important points about that that I What caught their attention is one that was directly asked a question about whether Don began overseeing this and whether he would continue to direct. allowing the FBI the full weight of its powers to investigate all of these allegations, the president answers questions about that and the other important thing that I thought was interesting is, again, the president reflects what's going on in Brett's life Cavanaugh through the prism. from his own experiences in suggesting that he was being treated unfairly that he understands well what Brett Kavanaugh is going through to this last point that you just mentioned Vlad the president used the word trauma the trauma inflicted on Brett Kavanaugh and his wife and his family drawing from the perspective of this White House, if not a moral equivalence, a moral relationship in the pain suffered by all the protagonists in this ongoing drama of nomination and confirmation to the Supreme Court, but to your first question, because it is very important not to not only as a matter of process but as a matter of the executive branch in relation to the legislative branch the president just said United States, everyone in this country.
I'm deferring to Senate Republicans what the FBI should do, essentially handing over its executive powers to Senate Republicans and the president of that Senate. The Judiciary Committee and Senate Majority Leader, Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have made it fundamentally clear that they want Brett Kavanaugh confirmed so that the FBI, according to words of the president of the United States, is taking his directives or his guidelines from the Senate Republicans. whose leaders have already said they want Kavanagh confirmed, suggesting guidance on the scope and timing of this investigation, and for those on the Democratic side who think it is a mere procedural delay before a foregone conclusion, the The president's words would certainly give them evidence of not having confirmed that suspicion, at least pointing it out.
Okay, Major Garrett reporting to us from the Rose Garden, where we just heard President Trump speak. Major, as always, we appreciate you, thank you. Paula Reid is still with us from the The White House once again gives Paula this question about the scope and scale of the investigation that the FBI is conducting over the next few days. The president says he wants it to be concluded quickly, but he also said he wants it to be over. It seems very comprehensive to me, or at least to some, that that might not be possible given the time frame, but there are others who say that the FBI has enormous resources and can deploy many agents to get to the bottom of whatever they are into. doing research.
We're trying to figure out, well, let's remember this is the seventh time the FBI has done one of these background checks. This is not a traditional criminal investigation where they are trying to figure out what happened and if charges should be filed, they were just supplementing their investigation. background check the White House is indeed a client and they are doing some investigations and in this case the questions are quite narrow and specific the big problem is how many witnesses last one hundred 60 minutes it was suggested that there are up to 20 witnesses that could be interviewed how many of those they interview and how many of these claims they delve into right now there are three claims, one that named Julie Sweat Nick, that has come under some scrutiny as to whether or not it is credible enough to warrant an FBI investigation into her . claims, so that's our clarity that people are trying to get to the president is if you authorized the FBI to investigate these three claims, but the idea that this could take a week, I mean, it's a participant who decides how many people you want to interview. how many complaints they are going to investigate and in this press conference it is not clear because although the president was giving them carte blanche from the podium, that is not what has been communicated from the White House to the FBI so far that we have seen.
Some sort of quick leaks from the FBI this weekend made it clear that they wanted to send a signal that they weren't capable of doing everything they wanted, so it will be interesting to see as the day goes on if there are any additional conversations between the Whites. House and the FBI to open this and whether the Senate also plays any role in trying to give the FBIbroader authority to investigate these claims. You know it's going to be interesting, Paula, because the president was asked very specifically about these questions regarding Mr. Kavanagh's drinking habits both as a younger man and in his later years in college, for example, and if it turns out that he basically lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee, that's considered perjury because I'm trying to reconcile the report that was leaked by Rachel Mitchell, the prosecutor who poked a lot of holes in Dr.
Ford's testimony essentially says that there are a couple of key things she couldn't remember and that there are some people who couldn't remember ever being at the party she claims to have been at, but that's just memory, now you're talking. You are testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee if the FBI finds out that you were lying about that that is perjury, am I right? yes, if it is, if you lie under oath, that's perjury and that's why people were trying to pin the president down, if you hear it, it can be very difficult to go after Dr.
Ford's claims or any of these other claims go too far because it sort of boils down to a he-said-she-said unless there is more cooperating information, so it seems like the political issue has shifted to this issue of Judge Kavanagh possibly committing perjury . himself based on his own assessments of his alcohol use in high school and in college, but again I think we need to go back and look at how he characterized it at one point he was very defensive, he was very combative, but I think it's fair To say that many people may not have a very honest or objective assessment of their relationship with alcohol, so I think we're starting to get into some really uncharted territory about whether someone should be excluded from a seat on the Supreme Court because did not provide an honest or accurate evaluation.
Hiset's assessment of his relationship with alcohol in high school or college, I mean, it's fascinating, but it seems like the conversation will move from these claims of sexual assault to this question of whether or not it accurately represented his drinking, yes and and me. I think you know Ron Hosko, the former deputy director of the FBI, had a good point when we talked to him before, where he said you know that's a subjective thing when it comes to alcohol, what you know knocks someone else out, which one is which one. a couple. of beers might not knock someone out, you know what I mean, it's hard to know when you're talking about alcohol, two beers for one person is a big deal and six beers for another person isn't exactly a big deal and a lot of people just and going outside the law is just a life experience.
I think a lot of us know people who maybe have problems with alcohol and they don't really have an objective assessment of their own relationship with drinking and like he said, for some people it's also subjective what maybe you know knock me out can not knocking you out can just give you a buzz, so again it's very unexplored and subdued territory and I think a lot of people would have a lot of sympathy for him on that topic, even more so. that if there was any evidence to corroborate any of these sexual assault allegations, okay, Paula Reid, for us at the White House ball, as always, we appreciate it, okay, we're going to take a real quick break when we get back .
