Mar 26, 2024
welcome to P's toolbox, today we're going to cover the paint on your doors and I'm going to show you how to make this paint look like it's been

spray

ed when you're not actually

spray

ing it. I showed him how to prepare the

cabinets

. the last video on how to paint

cabinets

the easy way and after prepping it I went back and primed it with a canned primer. This right here is a car primer and I talk about that in the other video and all I did was spray it on. all this and let it dry so we can go ahead and put on our

finish

ed coats after priming the door.

I came back and hit her with steel wool dble zero uh. This is a good thing and I just came and lightly rubbed it. After that you need to clean it, remove all the small bristles because it breaks there now. I will also use 400 or higher wet sandpaper. I like to call it dry rolling. Okay, what I'm going to do is I'm going to brush everything out here and I'm going to cover all of my creases once I've done that. I'll go with a dry roller and just roll it over it. The reason I'm using a dry roller is because it keeps it thin and you won't have any raised spots, it will be very tight on the door, so you can go back and clean it and put a clear coat on it and it will look like it was sprayed.

I'll take it right on top of the cracks. all very well, you may have to put two coats here and that's fine. I like to put two coats of paint on anything I'm painting. Okay, you'll hold it up to where you can paint all over. you take your roller and you press it down, you want to remove all these little brush strokes, so you want to press it down ideally. I like to spray my doors, but if you don't have a sprayer, this is the way to go now that this door is

finish

ed. I can set it aside and take another door if I want and start rolling and brushing that one.

You don't want it to dry completely, but you can continue using it on every door you don't have to take. and wipe it down every time it gets a little paint in there, you just don't want it to get loaded with paint where the roller marks will show. You want this to be good when you stop by, don't take a lunch. it breaks and then you come back and expect to use it like that CU, it will dry out and really ruin it so it's good to have a couple of these little rollers on hand and put another one on when it starts to get dry put this one in a bucket of water and wipe it off, It only takes a couple of minutes to clean a small roller like this.

I put two coats on here, let it sit overnight. I like to do it myself, I let it cure overnight before coming. Go back and start sanding it, you can read the instructions on the can and, uh, if it tells you it's cured before that, go ahead and do it if you want to personally. I like to leave it overnight now once I do it. Come back with steel wool and that's what I did here. I hit everything with steel wool and don't rub it too hard, just hit it lightly to remove any imperfections and make it smooth once it's nice. and smooth, you can paint it again with your clear coat.
You don't want to use wet sandpaper on this unless it's semi-gloss or glossy. Never use it on satin because that satin paint will come off if you do. Put water in there, everyone has their own preferences when it comes to paints or something, but this here is fantastic, it's a water-based Alid paint and it's pro classic Sherman Williams. Sherman Williams has several pro-classical paintings that are excellent. This is a mix between oil and water base, meaning it can adhere like an oil base. It has oil-based properties, but you can wash it with soap and water. Fantastic product.
I don't know how they came up with this, but PA when I start painting it here you'll see how soft it is let me give you a quick tip about the lip. I don't know if you know about this, but on this lip here you have a channel and what I do is I make holes in there so that when the paint goes on that edge on that edge, I can just push it and it will fall into the holes and it won't clog and It will prevent the paint lid from opening the next time you use it.
We'll take this and I'll put this point right there, we'll put some holes in it, this particular screwdriver has a whole. You could use a small, uh, Phillips bit, but this whole pointy bit here really makes it easy and it was an accessory that can attach to Mega Pro screwdrivers, which I really like. You see how the holes are here, so when this drains, it will go down that channel and it won't stick. Look how soft. This goes on, you'll be surprised how easy it is to apply compared to regular paint. If you want your regular paint to be smooth like this, you'll watch my other video and I show you how to take the paint and cut it.
It's clear to make it work like that, but this is a fantastic paint, it's actually soft on its own, you don't have to add anything to it and it's a little bit more durable than regular latex, of course it is. to make it more durable when you put clear on it and I put Clear on this and it also made it super slick and shiny. If I want a super shine right now, I'm not looking for a super shine. I'm looking for a satin finish one that will basically match the standard cabinets that come from the factory, take my dry roller and I'll just push it over here and it will remove all the brush strokes, although this is really smooth, you'll have little brush strokes, but if you take this and you go over it with a dry roller, it becomes very flat and when it sets like this paint does very well, it will set up like a spray, that's all there is to it normally. it will prime anything I'm going to paint, that's why I take my doors outside to prime them because I don't want the house fumes in, you can take and use just sandpaper and knock this down, take it to where it's a little bit rough and I use 120 grit sandpaper on that vibrating sander and just hit this, you can do it around the house and keep the dust to a minimum, then you can apply this and this paint will stick really well on there like I do.
He said it will stick fine, but it sticks better if you prime it, it just makes it a little bit more durable, don't worry too much about this part because it doesn't get used as much as your doors, your doors. It grips steadily and you can use it faster. I also put a clear coat on it, so what we're going to do is take a satin clear and spray the doors afterwards and you do that on the outside, you can even spray it on the inside if you want, but there's no real need to do that, if you don't want to. the fumes, you don't want to paint this in the sun because you don't want it to stick to you before you can spread it out, so do it in the in the shade somewhere inside, if you want, if this was against the wall you can just cut it out and roll it as close to the wall as possible or put some tape on the wall and take the roller all the way. if you only have one roller, which I don't recommend, I recommend getting a couple of them, at least two or three when you do this, if you have to wash it and reroll it and use that roller, make sure you dry it well.
Well, take it if you have to with a rag, wring it back and forth, just make sure it's dry because if you roll it up again and you have water in there, you're going to have stains on the paint and it could possibly run on this door as well. It's actually very soft, all I'm going to do is take double zero steel wool and rub it lightly just to make sure I get out anything that might have been on a roll or maybe a hair or anything that got in there. so I just tapped it lightly and we'll go ahead and put the clear coat on after we do this.
I'll make sure to remove everything down to the little bristles. You have to make sure it is clean. that's it, this is Mohawk and it's a precatalyzed lacquer and this here is um Deft, which you can buy at Home Depot, you have to get it online or at a paint supply house, not everyone has it, but it's a great product, precatalyzed um lacquer is a little harder than standard lacquer. You spray it, you can touch it five or 10 minutes later at most and then you can come back in half an hour and paint it again, so I put two, two or three coats here, when I'm done, shake it really well and just spray even.
Uniform strokes. I'm almost out of it and I'm out of the other spray, that's why I'm using this one, almost. I'm going to look for another can of this stuff before I put on the other coats, but this will give you a good idea, that's all for now, Don't forget to subscribe, visit Pauls toolbox.com to see all my stock videos. and you'll see my videos in order, so if you want to get into drywall or electrical, you can find them easily.
