TNC:28 (excerpt) JFK Response to Truman Criticism

Mar 15, 2024
Last Saturday one of our most dedicated and courageous presidents gave the nation his opinion on the upcoming democratic convention, to the extent that Mr. Truman's comments were directed at me. I take this opportunity to first respond to his statement. Mr. Truman suggested that he take a step. stepped aside as a candidate in 1960 in

response

let me say that I have no intention of stepping aside at anyone's request. I was the only candidate who risked my chances in every primary the only one who visited every state I have ever known and survived all kinds of Hazard and the opposition and I have no intention of withdrawing my name now on the eve of the convention.

Second, Mr. Truman stated that the convention would be controlled or pre-established. In

response

, let me say to the extent that I have anything to do with it. It will be an open convention, as all of our broad-based party conventions are open even though our candidate has been selected on the first ballot in all but one convention since 1932, including the 1948 convention that nominated Mr. Truman to me, an open convention means one. reflects the free will of freely chosen delegates in contested primaries and state conventions, but based on my observations of him in 1952, 1956 and last Saturday, Mr. Truman considers an open convention to be one that studies all candidates, reviews his records and then takes his advice, however, I share his hope that our convention will consider all potential nominees, including all those he named and some he did not name, and I hope and expect that Mr.

Truman will attend the convention and, in case I am the nominee, I hope you will support me. In the third fall, Mr. Truman accused my followers of putting undue pressure on the delegates. Not a single concrete example has ever been mentioned. I don't want any votes that have been pressured and the facts of the matter are that my votes come from the primaries that Ed was in, all the open ones and the rank and file Democrats who voted for me at the state conventions, the prospective candidates that Mr. Truman appointed could have finished those primaries, some of them traveled a lot throughout the year and supported my opponent in the primaries, but none of them finished a primary.

On their own, the other candidates also had the same opportunity as me to present their background and views to individual delegates and state conventions, many of whom have already been adequately prepared to use Mr. Truman's words and have their own sponsors who are not me. They told me without influence and without the opportunity to pressure the delegates. Fourth and finally, the heart of Mr. Truman's objection seems to be his question about whether I am ready for the country or whether the country is ready for me in terms of maturity and experience. Let me say this. As objectively as I could, I did not lightly set out to seek the presidency, it is not a prize or a normal object of ambition, it is the most important office in the world and I came to the conclusion that I could best serve the United States in that office. .

After 18 years of service to this country, first as a naval officer in World War II and for the last 14 years as a member of Congress, in the last 20 years I have traveled to almost every continent and country and in recent years in every state in the union more than any other active candidate more than any active contender now or in history, as far as I know, my writings, addresses and activities in domestic and foreign affairs speak for themselves and I am willing to let our party and Nation be the judges of my experience and ability, but this should be understood if we want to establish a test for the presidency according to which 14 years in important elected office is insufficient experience, then all but three of the 10 possibilities mentioned by Mr.
Truman last time Saturday all but a handful of our presidents since the very founding of this nation should have been ruled out and every president elevated to that office in the 20th century should have been ruled out, including the three great democratic presidents woodro Wilson Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman himself
