In northern Kosovo, inhabited predominantly by ethnic Serbs, many people were injured in the unrest, including soldiers from the NATO-led KV mission. More than 30 Italian and Hungarian soldiers suffered injuries, some of them seriously, when they were among them. Kosovo police and Serbian protesters tried to do so. According to the Serbian government in Belgrade, more than 50 Serbs were injured, several of them seriously. Kosovo, predominantly inhabited by ethnic Albanians, declared independence from Serbia in 2018, but is still considered the youngest Serbian province by its government. The reason for the violence is the mayors appointed by the Kosovo government in the region.

Kosovo authorities had recently ordered local elections in several places, but the Serbs boycotted the elections. As a result, the region's Albanian minorities took control of local councils despite a voter turnout of less than 3.5%.
