Why Batman Vs Superman Sucked

Apr 08, 2024
Hey guys Henry, here from a closer look in this week's video, we'll take a look at Batman vs. Superman while wondering why it failed as a movie. All materials used in this video are for non-profit educational purposes and fall within the Fair Use guidelines Now, before I start this video, I would just like to say that I really enjoyed this movie, but I completely understand why the vast majority of the viewers do not share my opinion, since this movie has many flaws and I must also give them two warnings. Before we start, first of all, spoilers for Batman versus Superman and also I might geek out at some point because in my spare time I'm a bit of a DC fan, anyway, a fellow YouTuber who makes similar content to mine, called nerdy writer, made a video about this.
why batman vs superman sucked
A couple of months ago, in this video, he concluded that the movie failed because it kept focusing on individual moments instead of the overall story. You are right, but I can safely say that you only scratched the surface, there is so much more. Here is what we need to address before answering the question of why it failed. um, also nerdy writer, if you're watching, I just thanked you and sent at least two, maybe even three, of my viewers your way, so I'm just. Saying maybe you could yell at me. Sorry, I'm desperate for more exposure. Still, it's easy to get caught up in small moments and criticize the movie solely for them, for example, the infamous Martha scene.

More Interesting Facts About,

why batman vs superman sucked...

However, in my first draft of this. video I tried to analyze some of these specific moments, but it never really answered the essay question and I ended up right where I started, so in this video I'm going to focus on the overall picture of the movie, so reason number one. why this movie failed none of the characters had good motivation, we know Batman's motivation, he wanted to kill Superman to protect the innocence of his city, but throughout the story what was Superman's motivation to stop Batman and also what was Lex Luther's motivation, pause the video now. and ask yourself those questions, have you thought about it?
why batman vs superman sucked
Okay, so what was Superman's motivation? If you have an answer, then you're clearly a better man than me because I've seen the movie three times and I still have no idea you can say it. Superman's motivation was extremely weak because the writer had to force the idea that his mother's life was at stake, so he had to fight Batman, so we have established that Superman's motivation was very weak, although It was just that, but now let's look at Lex. Luther, what was his motivation? That's the ridiculous part. He really doesn't have any motivation. PS Superman and Batman face each other in a fight and it puts millions of lives at risk so I can only assume it is purely their own entertainment in this issue. motivation underlines one of the key flaws in this movie: it has no soul, civil war came out 6 months before

superman

and has a somewhat similar story, so it's a natural check to test why bvs wasn't good and the number One reason is that we really cared about the Civil War characters as an audience, we completely understood why everyone was doing what they were doing and more than that, we felt a genuine and real connection and emotion for both Iron Man and Captain America .
why batman vs superman sucked
All of this culminated in the soul-destroying final fight between them when two want close friends to become worse enemies, the emotion and empathy we have as an audience spills across the screen in Civil War, but with Batman versus Superman we don't feel any of that, there's no moment of sympathy or love or any emotion at all when Superman was killed at the end it was supposed to be the emotional climax of the movie At this moment Not only was I not sad in any way but I actually I was bored. I even remember yawning at the cinema. during his funeral scene and not only does Superman's death carry no real weight since we all know they would never kill Superman off that early because he's too big of a cash cow, but Snider has the audacity to do the sequence in the one everyone is mourning. his death lasts 10 minutes and throughout this sequence Snider is doing his best to tell us to do one thing: be sad, be sad, be sad, are you sad?
Snider as a director is brilliant at creating good images, but what he is not so good at is being a good storyteller, he does not know how to establish a relationship between a character and his audience and, by extension, he does not know how to make the audience worry. Snider knew he didn't create enough emotion in the movie, so I made the morning sequence 10 minutes long to really force the sadness down the audience's throat, it's like my grandpa used to say, you can polish that shit as much as you can. you want, but at the end of the day it's still a part of now, let's move on to The second reason why this movie failed is that the creators did not respect the source material.
Batman has always had one rule: never take a life, even when you're looking the devil in the eyes, never give in, never back down, there's always another way Batman never kills. and if the real Batman we all know were in the shoes of the Batman of this movie, he would never sentence any man to death, even if that man had committed the most horrible crimes. This is one of Batman's most admirable traits, it's essentially what makes Batman. Batman, but in this movie they prostituted the character of Batman, ignored his history, ignored what made him the iconic hero that he is, and fundamentally changed his character so they could have a glorified three-minute hit, but the change in Batman's character It is not like this.
What bothered me the most were the inexcusable and truly pointless changes they made to Lex Luther. I warned you at the beginning that he could drive me crazy, well here he comes in the comics and animated shows. Lex Luther has always been the best villain. In DC history, with the exception of perhaps the Joker, Luther is cunning, he is a genuine genius and will ignore all ethical boundaries until his goals are met. When Luther is in the room he owns everything, every word that comes out of his mouth is meticulously planned and he is a master manipulator, the reason he is such a brilliant Superman villain is because, although he has no physical powers, He can always defeat the man of steel with intellect alone, do you know how much power he would have to give up? to be president, that is, conspiracy buff, I spent 75 million dollars on a fake presidential campaign, all just to annoy Superman, but instead of this dark and brooding intimidation for Luther, we have this next category, circles going around and around, they're going to find Superman, wrong category, boy, no. no, no, triangles, yes, blood, Tri, the reason why I think this change is a bad move is very simple, if the animated version of Luther was in this movie, it would have been better in every way, a lot of people He complained about Luther's absence. of motivation, but here's another nail in the coffin of this movie, if Snyder had added a 50c scene to the movie, it would have dramatically improved Luther as a character if he had made Batman versus Superman, that's how he would have done it.
Luther is sitting in his chair. Looking through the window of her skyscraper directly at the people of the metropolis, the senator burst into the room with anger in her eyes. I am blocking your import license. I will not be complicit in your manipulative schemes. The senator said with some fear in her voice. camera focuses only on Luther's mouth at no point in the film have we had a full view of Luther's face Luther lets out a sly smile still looking down the window you have a wonderful daughter Senator Finch Rachel is one of the most High Achievers in their class for your sake, will let this bill pass.
She told him in an uncomfortably friendly tone. The senator's eyes widened in fear. Luther still didn't turn his chair to acknowledge his presence. You are a monster. The senator said with her. body shaking as she did it no, I'm not the monster Superman it's just that the world needs to be protected I'm the only one who can provide such protection Luther said with a great degree of confidence this isn't about doing the right thing, you don't You don't care What happens to those people down there. This isn't about right and wrong, it's about you. You have such an ego that you can't stand the thought of someone having more power than you.
Luther slowly turns his chair to face the other side. senator directly in the eyes the camera is on the bottom of his face as he lets out a sinister and sly smile now I hope we all agree but that version of Luther there would have been completely superior to Eisenberg's interpretation in every way now Snider didn't 100% like his character, there was a scene on the helipad where he calls Superman by his real name and confesses that he knows his secret identity. He also has photos of his kidnapped and gagged mother that he throws at his feet.
All this in a manipulative way. movement to bend Superman to his will, this was the only moment in the entire film that really evoked an emotional response from me, as not only did it match what the real Luther would have done, but it was also a very unexpected twist. And pleasant. I also need to ask everyone a favor, don't blame Jesse Eisenberg for ruining this character. Snider and the others behind the scenes were the ones who made the decision to take this character in this direction. Jesse even says this in an interview. I was really surprised because I guess I imagined Lex Luther as older and I guess just because of the fact that he was bald I assumed he wouldn't do it.
I never thought of myself as that kind of character, but then when I read the script, it hit me. On set I realized I could do a good job with that. Now this brings me to my final point. There is an element to storytelling that every good writer and director understands, however, it seems like Zack Snider has failed to grasp this idea like Batman vs. Superman completely ignores the invisible rule of storytelling. The rule is that on this show you don't say what this saying means. If you want to tell the audience a fact, show it organically and let the audience come to their own conclusions.
Never tell the audience. For them, this is why most filmmakers boycott storytelling because storytelling is telling the story to the audience instead of letting the audience experience it for themselves. Well, let me give you an example in another movie, so I'm going to talk about Harry Potter for the next 30 seconds, so skip ahead if you don't want spoilers. Harry Potter was a brilliant franchise with expert direction and an interesting story. Experiencing that story organically was very entertaining, but if instead of watching the movies I came to you and told you that Harry's parents died, then he turned out to be a Haw Crux, then he died, then he decided he didn't want to, then He killed the villain and lived happily ever after.
It simply doesn't carry any emotional weight to tell the audience a story that happened, it never will under any circumstances. beat the audience by experiencing that story for themselves, an example of the many times Snyder told us but didn't tell us it was with Batman, he told us that Batman is old and has lost his moral code, we understand it as much as anyone understands it who reads the story. but understanding is not what the art of cinema is about, cinema is about making the audience feel emotion, in whatever form it may be, if you fail to make your film an emotional journey, you have failed as a director, The reason why Batman is a broken character is not explained at all, we are just told that is the case, if I was directing the movie I would have done that scene where Batman visits his parents.
Graves a little more. Batman walks towards the two coffins. C shows two plates with his names. Thomas and Martha Wayne take out a bouquet of roses and place all but one in a pot between the two of them slowly turn to their right to see another coffin the name is blocked by Bruce's body and we can't see what he says he places The Last Rose in a nearby pot and then lovingly places his hand on the top of the stone. Bruce walks away from the grave and back into the light. The camera slowly pans from the entrance to the lone coffin to see two words carved into Dick's side.
Grayson, this would have been such a powerful, beautiful and most of all emotional moment because he would actually answer the question of why Batman is broken and give hints towards a larger story. This is how the universe is built, without one of your characters watching. a couple of YouTube videos maybe Bruce was responsible for Dick's death when he let a villain live and then that villain murdered Robin. This broke Batman as it not only filled his heart with guilt but also showed that his never kill philosophy doesn't work on some criminals as some criminals are better off dead or maybe not, that question would never be answered and the public would never I would know for sure, but onegreat movie isn't about knowing, it's about feeling, about teaching the audience the complexities of The Human Condition and when a movie like Batman versus Superman doesn't offer genuine emotion, it fails as a movie because it has no soul and I don't want to be a complete pessimistic, so I'll give this movie an award: it's not the worst Batman. movie out there, but that doesn't mean much, thanks for watching this week's video.
