Let's go ahead and move on to today's makeover. This is my piece that I'm going to work on today. I'm going to give it a little fall makeover, you might recognize it from the top coat battle and you might also recognize it from my Beyond Paint video because it goes with this piece, but I don't use it so I wanted to do something really fun with and wanted to give you a little tour of my festool rotex 90. You guys have seen this in other videos and wanted more details on it so today I'm going to talk a little about it and use it to strip. painting the top of this nightstand, so this top box is actually where the sander comes in and this bottom part is a dust extractor, so the hose folds up nice and easy here when you're not working with it and this is what Aspire and the vacuum bag looks like the dust extractor also has wheels and the sander clips on the top so it's very easy to move around my project that I'm working on.
I'm going to use a 60 grit pad in Rotex mode to remove This paint also has a speed variation on the side, which is nice because you can control the pace of your sander while I'm removing the finish. I want to stay around a four, five or six, while the dust extractor turns on every time I turn on my sander, it turns on and sucks up all the dust. It's very close to dust-free sanding, which is surprising because I've used just a regular, cheap Dewalt orbital sander for so long and it kicks up so much dust and makes a huge mess in my garage and it definitely doesn't come off as quickly.
You can see how quickly this is eating up three coats of paint and three coats of top coat and leading me to bare wood, well here's the Bad news: the sander is 475 and the dust extractor is 640 so this is not a DIY tool, it's a tool for furniture painters who do this as a business, it's a big investment, I paid for this with my own money and it was very difficult. to do but it's saving me a lot of time and the specific reason I chose this model is because of that accessory there, it can also go into delta mode and you can get a very detailed sanding so those are my thoughts on the festool 90.
I had some paint in the cracks but I tried to get this paint out of these cracks just using sandpaper and it didn't work so I had to go to my dreaded remover guys I shouldn't have pushed this paint into the seams when I knew it. which I was just going to remove it in the future, but I wanted the top coat video to be very authentic, so here I'm just applying a little bit of citrus strip. I'm going to let this sit for 30 minutes and then I'll go back and remove the remaining paint from the cracks on this top and during those 30 minutes I decided to remove these little decorative pieces just like I did on the larger dresser for the Beyond video Paint.
I'm also removing the hardware and saving it for later. So I'm just using a painter's tool on the pointed end to remove this paint and I also took a small brass brush to get the little bits stuck in there after I finished removing the paint. I'm just taking this. low odor

mineral

spirits and some coarse steel wool and I'm cleaning off all that stripper, then I take my sander and I put it on orbital mode and I think I have like a 220 here and I'm sanding my wood filler, my next step for the Preparation is that I'm going to clean this entire piece with a little bit of Dixie Bell White Lightning, which is a teaspoon of cleaner.
Just mix this with hot water and scrub really well with the scouring sponge and then I always come back. with some clean, clear water and I'll rinse everything. I'm also going to add a little primer in these places where I added my wood filler. The last thing I'm going to do on the first day of this project is paint all of this hardware and get it ready to go so it's cured and hard on the last day of the project, so I'm just going to clean it with a degreaser and rinse it with a little bit of water, dry them and then I'm going to sand them with 220 sandpaper and then I'm going to use my favorite spray paint that you see me use on my channel all the time.
I love this Rust-oleum primer and paint on one with a metallic finish, it gives a real metal finish and I like to reuse the hardware. when I can because it saves money when I work with spray paint, I think it's best to apply several thin coats and you don't have to wait long between coats, only about five minutes, so I left my top. it dried overnight and my primer is dry too so I'm just sanding this with a fine sandpaper and then I go over it again with a 150 sandpaper to start and then I bumped it up to 220 just to make it nice and soft and I'm removing all the dust before I start painting.
I'm going to try a new paint today. You guys have recommended this to me over and over again and I'm finally trying it. This is mineral

fusion

paint and I'm using the color Bay Berry, which is a really beautiful olive green. This is a self-leveling acrylic paint, so today I'm going to use some zebra brushes because they are synthetic and will help alleviate those brush marks even more. I want to clarify that this is not a chalk paint very different from many of the paints you see me use on my channel, this is 100 acrylic and all its pigments are natural, so they do not use synthetic pigments and it will cure after 21 days and it will be very hard and no need to apply a top coat as I mentioned.
This is my first time using this paint so I went to the Fusion website and it is very helpful. It has a lot of information on how. their paint is made and they have tons of youtube videos showing how to use it so I watched a lot of those demos and they were really helpful. Some of the tips I found helpful are that you should use a lot more paint than you do. We are used to the fact that the best way to use this paint is to apply a lot of it on the brush and push it throughout the piece.
I found the open time to be a little longer than a chalk style paint. It is not like this. dry as quickly as possible so you have some time to go back and smooth out the brush strokes. You don't want to brush too much on the back and you don't want to stop mid-stroke, and if you do. you want to do one of those long strokes from the top down, as I mentioned earlier, this paint is 100% acrylic, it's water based, but you may have noticed that I didn't take out my spray bottle, I didn't dilute it with water.
With my brush, this paint doesn't need to be thinned with water, it just works straight out of the can, which is really nice. This is a VOC-free paint, so you can definitely work with it indoors and it doesn't actually contain many chemicals that you can use. We will find in other paints such as ammonia and formaldehyde another difference from chalk paint is that it is not porous at all because it is acrylic. Those chalk paints really absorb the wax and top coats and this will actually harden and you don't need to coat it, but for durability they have a clear coat that you can use that doesn't yellow and they have a finishing oil if you want to apply it in colors darker and have many different colors. crayons if you just want to make ornaments, but I wanted to make it nice and easy today, so I'm not going to make ornaments today.
I'm just doing a smooth finish and I'm not going to top coat the pint today. I'm working with retail sales today for about 20. You can find your nearest retailer by going to their website and seeing who sells it in your area. Some of those retailers sell online and I found some on Amazon, but shipping was quite expensive. I'm going to apply two coats over this, so I'll let this first coat dry for about two hours before I go back and re-coat. I'm cleaning the lid before closing this so it doesn't get stuck. there and I'm also going to wrap my brushes in plastic wrap so I can go back and use them.
Here is what my paint looks like after drying, it really evens out as it dries and just needed a little more coverage. so I'm going to put a second coat on it, ah, I really love that this paint comes in pints because that's really all you need to do like a dresser, it's one pint, as you can see, I probably only use a quarter of this. on this side table, so while that's drying, I'm going to seal my top and I'm going to use my flat Dixie Bell clear coat and today I'm going to try the zebra fan brush.
I have many friends who are furniture painters. I love this brush for applying top coat, so I'm going to check it out today. You've seen this a lot on my channel, but in case you're new here, I love this top coat, it's super flat and really applies. Easily self-levels, works on paint, stain or wood. I recently used this on my son's desk and I have used it before on his dresser and I really like the finish it gives to bare wood so my hardware is all dry and ready to apply so who's ready for the big reveal?
Just to remind you, this is what we started with and here is my fall nightstand makeover. I love this color. I love the gold accent and how it really feels like a fall piece. I really enjoyed working with this mineral fusion paint. I think I'll definitely try it on another project in the future. I love this piece so much that I put it in the family room so I can enjoy it during the fall season, thank you all. for joining me on today's project I hope you enjoyed it I hope it prepares you for the fall don't forget to check out my course launching with the international open academy and get that great deal before it ends on October 5th.
I'll be back next week with another project and I'll be 40 when I see you next time thanks for being here guys and I'll see you next time oh hello what do you need oh sure that would be great I love chipotle your wallet is in that drawer I saved it you can Get through it, it's okay, keep walking, I'm going to put that swag on my mistakes to get me more views, bye, I love you.
