Unsung 🎵 Con Funk Shun Straight From The Heart 🎵 Unsung Episodes 2022
the story of confunction in 1978 confunction took over the charts and the dance floor with a party anthem called fun boom it dropped and it hit so hard fun fun we do fun and tear the house down and we knew we had a hit indeed confunction was a hit making machine they churned out four gold albums and turned live shows into house parties with a sound that ranged from soulful ballads they need the fire departments from all over all the counties to come put the stage out it was on fire boogaloos would get loose confusion had the sound that a dancer could just hit the dance floor and turn it loose on seven members strong confunction was also a tight-knit brotherhood that lived for their music and for each other the terminology we used to use was the brotherhood it was you know one for all and all for one confunction was a family what was my last name my name was devin paul herrera confunction but at the height of their success disputes over money and music would crack that family foundation leaving the band and the brotherhood to rule what might have been we just had no respect for each other just too much disagreement too much bickering things come things go and if you're not able to bend then you break and they weren't able to bend vallejo california the birthplace of confunction lies east of san francisco and north of oakland in the late 1960s the region became a hotbed of social and political action while sparking a musical movement that took its cues from the passion in the streets if you historically look at the r b soul artists that have come out of the bay area we some

lives here in the bay area any band that came out of the bay area grew out of the sly stone school of heavy thump big groove and real inclusive sound at vallejo high school michael cooper and louis mccall vowed to put together a band of their own they recruited friends and classmates including carl fuller danny thomas zebulon herrell dennis johnson and cedric martin and call themselves project soul right now we're out in the country club crest district of vallejo california and this is the birthplace really of project soul right behind us is the mccall house where we put together the band lewis mccall and i kicked it off right here they played at high school that some of the nightclubs in the bay area and a lot of the military bases but a near-tragic accident involving danny thomas and louis mccall in 1968 threatened to end their musical journey almost as soon as it began about a quarter mile from my house a car pulled in front of me and stopped and at the last minute and i ended up rear-ending him louis he ended up going through the windshield got the car to check on him and when i saw him his whole face is split open danny thomas walked away with minor injuries but louis mccall suffered a fractured skull along with physical problems that would resurface in years to come he was so determined to be in project soul that he didn't let that stop him at all he got out of the hospital maybe two days later he was right on them drunk to round out their sound the group reached out to felton pilate a singer from the affluent east side of vallejo after his band broke up i remember seeing him play with his band he played the trumpet he played guitar he played keyboards he sung i said we gotta have this guy on the outside i'm sorry okay hold on i'll give that some thought let me assign in 1971 a singing group on memphis stax record label called the soul children came to oakland to play at a rally for political activist angela davis the group fired their own van before the show and hired project soul to take their place we're talking about one day of rehearsal we hadn't met the soul children we just show up and play the music that was the scariest scariest time of my career a year later the soul children asked project seoul to bank them on tour and move to memphis memphis you know whoa you know that's 2 000 miles away they rented a station wagon and a u-haul trailer we piled our equipment in there and we hit the road once in memphis the band moved into two three-bedroom apartments staking their fortunes together whatever the cost we didn't want to go back to valeo less than how we left the idea was to stay there and make it happen moving to memphis also got them in the door at stacks where they got a musical master class with artists like isaac hayes johnny taylor and the bar caves when our first major gift was opened up for the broadcast it was like the opening of our eyes we had some uniforms made at that point we stopped getting into a little choreography which really put our group at a different level the bar case was sort of the big brothers they looked to us for advice and they were sponges they soaked that stuff up and they got into them and gave them something that they didn't bring from california they also found themselves on center stage backing singer rufus thomas at the los angeles coliseum in 1972 for a landmark event what's that i've was just unbelievable 102 000 people in the los angeles coliseum backing up a guy in pink hot pants break down to the left break it down to the right break it down to the wall gonna love the knife we were so nervous and we did such a great job with all those nerves going that we knew what we want to do for rest of our lives to do that the band began to build a sound and a reputation the old-fashioned way performing at a local club called the rosewood night after night we created a thursday night we called it college night and that thursday night became the number one night as word started to spread the group began touring the south where they got another kind of education some of the areas were the deep south if you know what i mean so we're in the areas where people of my color should not even walk through but we're getting hired by these folks right they would say we can't stand you guys but we love your music with their reputation on the rise project soul decided to change their name we did the california state fair back in 69 we learned a song by the night lighters that was called confunction it's big a lot of letters it's got funk in it go with it confunctions soon recorded a couple of records on a local label they went nowhere but in 1976 they got signed to a major mercury records their self-titled debut from mercury featured a club hit called sure feels good to me but the record failed to crack the top 50. the whole confunction original album was just a lot of hurry up and let's get something recorded because we're assigned to mercury unfortunately you don't get a hit like that and we didn't get a hit but confunction wasted no time getting back in the studio this time with a proven hand earth wind and fire producer skip scarborough before skip scarborough confunction was a well-cooked meal so to say skip added all the spices he just took consumption from here to there the collaboration clicked their 1977 album secrets quickly took off thanks to the song that soon became their calling card confunction eyes yeah we're young and kind of crazy let's write something that talks about ourselves our middle name is funk and with funk that means it's a heavy groove we're dancing partying we are confusionizing confunction was finding their group in more ways than one ooh we knocked off bird winning five who does that you know by the late 1970s confunction had established a unique musical identity a powerhouse blend of bay area funk and memphis seoul and the seven friends who helped conjure that sound each brought something special to the mix carl didn't speak a lot but when he needed to speak he spoke what was on his mind michael very talented very smart very creative paul was a joker he's always been a joker still is a joker cedric loves to fly that was his passion you would find cedric flying a cessna and a

beat danny sweet man he was just very easygoing and still is today felton proud he's like brains for the family musical james i used to call him okay she is lewis was the leader lewis was the glue without him things didn't happen and the group had one other secret weapon former stax employee linda lou bolden now married to lewis mccall one of the most intelligent brilliant women of the music industry she was a great influence within the group i ran their lighting took their pictures wrote their bios so the crotch of their pants when they ripped them on stage i went to law school so i could read the contract anything that they needed i became that now all the band needed was a hit and as they toured behind their secrets album they discovered that they had just that everybody knows how many songs can you listen to on the radio and just take a horn line and know what it is one knock that's winning fire serpentine fire from number one ooh we knocked off bird winning five who does that you know fun went to number one with a bullet on the r b singles chart and helped the secrets album go gold confunction became a band in demand we're being seen by 10 to 15 000 people each night like three four times a week now we get to stay at real hotels and eat real food and go to designers like bill whitton and get those sparkly skin tight costumes that were costing three thousand dollars a piece riding high off the success of secrets confunction moved back home to vallejo and settled into the melody lounge a former nightclub they converted into a rehearsal hall and studio we're on sonoma boulevard vallejo california in front of the world famous melody lounge the melody lounge had a neon sign across here we just turn it on every night as if the place will open guys were stumbling off the street drunk looking for a drink you know like oh man this is a rehearsal hall but you're welcome to stay and listen to us play within months of setting up shop in vallejo confunction released their third mercury album love shine and spun out another danceable hit shake and dance it's self-explanatory get up and report that booty to duty you're gonna shake that rump and dance to the beat because we're gonna let you out shake and dance with me shot to number five on the r b charts as love shine became confunction's second gold record meanwhile michael cooper and feldman pilot were becoming firmly established as the band's primary songwriters and singers felton actually was the lead singer and i was the guy that did all the yelling and holland you know i was a stylist belton was a crooner one part of the chemistry was that their voices are so different from each other they're really polar opposites and i think that's what made it work for confunctions next album candy michael and felton turned out another jet propelled dance hit appropriately titled chase when chase me dropped that was some serious business when they rip that we're like okay the gloves are off this song is just infectious it's a lot of energy it's that bay area funky that strong rhythm track and then when the flute solo came in it's got like shifting gears they just floor them every time me rose to number four on the r b charts and became another signature song if you ever want to pick a song that says confunction and they talk about the funky horn sounds the type arrangements that's it function could do no wrong unless they did it to themselves we had disagreements we had women too many women they started making camps with each other they became separate by the turn of the 80s decade confunction was at the top of their game with three

straight

gold albums and a live show that pulled out all the stops their show was high energy we had smoke machines we had power technique things that flash and make your eyes go white and then when you get a chance to look back the man was there playing everybody just came on board it was a show to behold it was always something to look at the outfits were cleverly put together one of my favorites just a plain white with mirrors all over it and the lights hit that oh we were like walking mirror balls all over the place and the band kept the party going off stage as well number one problem with confunction was their high testosterone level there were lots of women all the time that tour bus had a sign on it that said no head no backstage pass so um walk off stage the first thing where's the women it was almost like a competition without the band who's going to end up with the finest moments that i use when the tour bus is pulled into the hotel parking lot the drug dealers would already be out there because bands got paid in cash and they knew that i had like a lot of parties it was the thing to do just you know casual indulgence the function never missed a rehearsal never missed a gig never came home and didn't play with their kids it was something you did on the road i mean they're young even me i know what i was getting into when i married him in 1980 confunction got back to the studio to record their fifth mercury album spirit of love but the song which became its lead single nearly missed the cut got to be enough was presented by michael and right off the bat everybody hated it skip says guys put this one aside for a minute didn't know that the song was going to los angeles to have arrangement put on it skip put the song on he just turned from the most hated song to the most loved song the second you put it on you know the song you know it from the guitar line you know from the horn line you know from the groove got to be enough jump to number eight on the r b charts as spirit of love became confunction's fourth gold record the same year they released a new album touch that also reached the top ten propelled by a smooth groove called too tight too tight with my jam when you get about halfway through they get into those funky breakdowns and boom boom boom and i was like oh they can drop some bombs on you just so you know yeah we're i love the song it was a great mixture of pop and r b with funk but while the music flowed easily tensions were brewing within the group with no designated leader every decision the band made required to vote from what they played to what they wore everything was a damn vote should we dress in orange today is your dressing green just vote vote they would have some long and heated meetings you didn't ever want to go to a confunction meeting without your lunch packed because you're going to be there for a while they started making camps with each other as opposed to making a fortified unit where they were one family and those family ties would soon be ripped apart one for all all for one that changed one of the group members hit me by the early 1980s confunctions transformation from musical journeymen to superstars was complete to celebrate their seventh major label release in 1981 they titled the album confunction seven it included a message of group solidarity on the back of the album written by linda lou mccall renaissance comes by the name seven the rebirth of love life liberty and the legacy of hope we rejoice is seven bringing you the music of our

s seven times but it is as one that we give you our love peace and unity confunction that's the group that i started working with that's the group that i gave up my own career to get behind my husband but as they set to work on their follow-up album to the max the band was dividing itself into two camps the two the max lp was basically me and mike recording in one studio and the other five guys recording the other studio at the same time michael and felton were having their own issues they became involved in a real life love triangle a romantic plight that michael cooper put to music on a ballad titled love string the track was written by felton and the lyrics were written by me after he had given me this track come to find out that a girl that i thought i was exclusively dating was also seeing him at the same time michael was caught on the wrong side of a love triangle i happen to be there and then he's calling and she's like i can't the pain was so deep that i thought well i need to write about this and what better way to write about this experience than to write it on his track no one heard the lyrics until we voted on the song they put the votes in and my version won out felton stood up and said i want to withdraw my music the original lyrics for love strain was something else entirely i thought that my lyrics were better danny thomas said that he said are you out of your mind and thumb said okay okay though never released as a single love's train became a fan favorite and confunction's most enduring ballot michael's pouring his heart out like he did that just made that magic in the song and made it what it is yeah this cat wrote this on top of my track but it's true and it is a hit but despite the popularity of love streams album cells were on the decline so confunction turned over the production duties for their next lp fever to amir diodato hot off a run of recent hits for cool in the game and the two the max lp was an eye-opener we needed someone in charge it needed to be not me and michael just for the case of group harmony sure enough the new album got momentum from a surprising source a ballad co-written by bassist cedric martin titled baby i'm hooked there's a very romantic sign of confunction they can take you just into that real baby i'm hooked hit number five on the r b charts in order to be a full artist you got to have both sides and confunction was equally strong and to me the ballot made them last longer on the surface confunctions seem to be on cruise control their next album electric lady did well on the r b and dance charts but fights within the band over business matters became more frequent particularly when it came to songwriting and the money that came with it when we first started we had a publishing company called vallejo music then we had our individual publishing company we started off splitting 50 percent with valley joe after years that can narrow down to 25 percent all right foreign okay um one of the ideas was that whoever wrote a song that it should be equally split seven ways and of course i'm gonna no i get to sit over here and put in all my time effort that certainly seems unfair to me you have to give a portion back so that the group can maintain if one person getting rich the group is not going to laugh it all came to a boil one day as the band meant to vote on a song written by felton he made a deal with the group said okay you guys allow the song to be on the album you could have the publishing we had a month off and then we reconvene to start recording and then said oh no wait i didn't say that the group had already known that that was my position i said gentlemen me having to give you part of my money for nothing it's got to stop and they said well we're going to vote on it i said i don't care what the vote is the answer is no lewis said what are you sitting here telling six grown men that we're liars and don't say and boom that was just too much for louis yeah he hit felton he knocked me out of the chair and was hitting me multiple times michael pulled him off and i quit in my mind not worth it it was just one hit just one solid hit i remember felt just grabbed the strength and walked out the door and that was it just like that felt and pilate was gone you just took out the cat who we need to make this work we needed those balance we needed that falsetto we needed that different opinion we needed that louis was always professional so he felt bad about that he said well pmj i just made a mistake i shouldn't have did that but it was done i knew at that point when that happened that the group wasn't going to laugh after the startling departure of singer and songwriter felton pilot in 1986 confunction vowed to move ahead they set to work on a new album at their studio in vallejo with singer melvin carter on board to take felton's place i was brought into it abruptly it was an opportunity for me to step up and and show what i had but the band's foundation was cracking after finishing work on the album lewis and linda mccall moved across the country to washington dc shortly after that lewis missed two concert dates and the band voted him out it was a few dates that he couldn't make that was getting pretty serious it got to the point where finally we decided to let him go we got another drummer to sit in and fill in and of course this drummer was young flamboyant everything we needed lewis flies back to vallejo cooper tells him this lewis just got back on the plane when i picked him up from the from the airport he was in tears linda lou maintains that lewis missed the concerts to deal with debilitating headaches he'd been suffering from for years the lingering effects of his teenage auto accident he never had the time before to go to the doctor really and they were doing an mri and found bits of debris left over from when he and danny were in a car accident when they were 16. lewis had been suffering for years confunction's final album featuring louis mccall burning love was released in the summer of 86 searching for a fresh sound to fit the times it was their first lp in which all the songs were composed by outside writers and their first with a music video holly graham began to say you guys need a producer that's going to pretty much uniform you and put you in that vein like everybody else but it didn't sound much like confunction we hooked up with producers and billy osborne saying guys these guys did their best but they were under orders and under pressure to make us sound like something that we were not nothing about confunction was on that album fans agreed the burning love album fell to make the r b top 20. confunctions were showing since their debut for mercury 10 years before and as the band's contract with polygram mercury came to an end michael cooper felt ready for a change nothing felt good anymore with confunction warner brothers came along and i basically had a solo record offer that sat for months because i kept trying to insist that they taken function not just me and they no you go solo the last moment he said adios amigos uh you know i'm not gonna record with you guys anymore there were six record companies at the table that were interested in can function found out michael wasn't there anymore with the group and it all ended so after 17 years and 11 albums confunction was defunct we could record we could do songs but without mike on the phone singing it it's not confusing michael cooper signed a deal with warner brothers records and released his first solo lp love is such a funny game in 1987. meanwhile filth and pilot got busy with an up-and-coming rapper from the bay area m.c hammer feldman pilot he worked on let's get it started please hammer don't hurt him and contribute to quit so felton was a tremendous part of you know the soul and the music of of hammer time i didn't even like rap music you know my whole thing was trying to turn what he brought me into something i felt so comfortable listening to but after three solo albums warner brothers released michael cooper from his contract so in 1993 he decided to reform confunction felton pilot came aboard along with carl fuller and zebulun herrell but danny thomas cedric martin and louis mccall were not invited back i call up cooper and i asked him how could you come back after leaving the band and didn't sit down with each band member and say look guys who's on board who's not i could never go back to the voting and the arguing and all the things that i had just left five six years prior i'm going to pick the people that i know give the greatest show and the greatest sound and that's what i did they should have been handled much better michael can have the glitches they just come to me like a man i said this is what i want to do confunction would carry on but for one former member life without the band would prove too much to bear if you could understand the band itself was actually a person to lewis that he loved it just absolutely killed him that he was not part of confunction 2012 three decades after they first got together confunction tours and records with the lineup that includes original vallejo homeboys michael cooper felton pilot and carl fuller with a stage show that can still tear it up it is just magical to get back together hopefully we can make some people laugh make some people cry put some smiles on some faces and some rumps out on the floor like we used to
