How to Fall Decor from Thrift finds

Mar 23, 2024
Hi guys, I'm Lisa and welcome to my channel. Today we are going to make some items for

fall

or a makeover. This board is one I bought from a wholesale place that makes things look old, so this one isn't. It's not usable, it almost has a waxy feel to it, um not so much that this paint didn't stick because it did, but I don't think it was food safe at all and they are so thin so if I won't hang them on the wall, really They're not very useful, so I'm going to make a pumpkin out of this one and I'm going to start by putting a layer of crunchy medium on it and that's a Dixie Bell product, but you definitely don't have to use that product.

You can use Elmer's glue. I have used it many times and it works very well. You just paint the glue with a thick layer and then you let it dry and then you put your paint on it now when you're doing these crackle finishes you need to put a lot of paint on your brush because you're not going to apply a second coat so you just want to do a single layer and keep the strokes in the same direction. and don't go over a stroke again if it doesn't, if it doesn't need anything, or if it skips too much, then you can very carefully add a little more, but you don't want to go over the stroke any further. than necessary and here I have a little bit on the stem part but it cleans up easily because of the wax finish on this but anyway you give this one coat and I'm deliberately not painting the sides of this at all . because my plan here is to make as much of this

decor

ation as possible where it can be used all year round after

fall

, so I

decor

ate some for fall at home, but I don't like to have a lot. of decoration that may only be available during the holidays, so this one because I haven't painted the sides.

More Interesting Facts About,

I'm spraying alcohol on it because it still had a little bit of film on it, but after fall you'll be able to turn it around and hang it on the wall like a washboard, I mean, not a washboard like a test board yet and you won't see this white from the sides, so that's why I leave the sides, it will look good. I don't have them painted and now as you can see it can be used for the other side because the sides are not painted, so now that we have our pumpkin painted, obviously I'm going to leave this stem brown, and I mentioned that when I painted that, uh , not only will it have that nice crackle finish, but since it wasn't completely covered, some of that brown will show through, so now I'm just tying some raffia and some jute twine around the neck and that dresses it up quite a bit and now I'm going to add some little leaves that I removed from some fall picks and I know they probably aren't shaped like pumpkin leaves, but most people don't know their leaves when it comes to items like this and just getting some leaves to work to scale, I feel like it makes it look more like a pumpkin, so I'm just hot gluing them into place, but I'm not hot gluing them on purpose. to the washboard so this will all be completely removable so you can use it after fall and then I feel like fall decor or a lot of fog decor looks better with a rustic hang tag so my friend brought me this paper scrapbooking and I'm finding a print that I like and I just cut a hang tag so I start with just a rectangular shape and then I fold it lengthwise in half and then I cut a V out of that and that makes your hang tag, I hope.

I've got it on the frame here, which you can see, yeah, I just cut that little V shape at the top and then that makes your little hang tag and you can do this with any stiff paper, but now I'm stamping the word fall, but I'm using a small blade like my a and I have the blade upside down so it's pointing up and it looks like uh, well, it mimics and obviously it doesn't look like an a, but as long as it mimics the a. and I feel like that just adds a little touch that adds more interest and this is a really quick little makeover and I know most of you have bread boards of some kind and whether they're long and narrow or not at all. as wide as this I still feel like you have the look you need for a pumpkin and I think they would be really pretty if they were grouped in different sizes and shapes now on this hang tag I'm taking my brown ink pad and just rubbing around those edges just to give them a more aged look and that just adds a lot to your hang tag and I didn't mention that this is a two part video because I had put a vignette of elements together and completed them all but I couldn't finish the editing in time so I'll add the rest hopefully tomorrow and now for the second item, my sister picked up this big vase at a garage sale and she thought she could paint it and maybe put a stamp or stencil on it and I thought about that but I felt like I needed some serious texture, so I'm painting it here with the plan of just adding a lot of texture and letting the main color be white and that's what I'm doing here, just putting a layer of the gravel road color, which is a dixie bell color and then I started with this painting and here I still haven't added texture to the painting.

I'm just trying to give it some dimension and color, but I started painting this and I don't know at what point you see it, you'll probably see it before I do. I did, because I'm telling you, but I started seeing a pumpkin, so I'm painting this and just painting randomly, but keeping my line or my strokes in the same direction, uh, but I'm careful to make sure. some of the grays are showing now if I had known this was going to be a pumpkin, I probably wouldn't have even had to put that gray on it, but I did and it still worked, so I got my buttercream color layer and and now I decide, I actually decided I wanted texture on this anyway, but I'm adding some texture here and I'm adding a little bit of texture and using quite a bit of paint because I really want to load up my brush and just slap that texture back on.
I still keep my strokes in the same direction, but it really loads up your brush and it's okay if you get drips, that's actually a plus because the drips just give it more texture and make it look even more. like a pumpkin so like I said I just added a lot of baking soda so I mix my paint when I really want texture I mix my paint half paint and half baking soda and when you first start stirring it it seems like it's too much thick, but just Finish stirring it first before adding more paint because chances are it won't be too thick, that's just the process of stirring it, but I'm really putting a little bit of texture here and just adding a little bit more all the way. time until you are happy with the look.
Now I have to be careful that when I put that texture on it I don't take away all the shading, it almost looks like I'm here, but it was still there. I was left with a lot, I wanted this pumpkin to be white, but I just wanted some dimension and white and what I did here after I made my buttercream color is I added a little bit of white and I'm just using an apple barrel. I paint here because I already put that chalk paint on the base so it's going to stay on well and I'm just mixing regular white apple barrel paint with baking soda and that gives the buttercream another dimension of color so you've got that gray underneath and then you have your buttercream and now this is just a bright white and it keeps adding more dimension so you want dimension in color as well as dimension and texture so I decided here to just Just like I did with the plate For testing, I'm just making this vase so that it can still be used as a vase after fall, so you could remove what I'm going to add to this because it will also be removable. and this will just be a textured white vase that you'll be able to put maybe some twigs in so I guess it'll be more of a bohemian style and I think even in more modern decor these textured bases are popular right now so I'm not doing anything to limit it at all and what I'm doing and adding the stem here is I've stuffed some moths into the top and I think this is just Spanish moss and I filled it in enough. where when I put this stem in, this stem will be snug, but now I don't have to glue it in, I could just stick it in there and like I said, it's completely removable if someone doesn't want it to look like that. a pumpkin now um this is just a little twig and one of those little wired twigs and I didn't buy this I was giving up this and some leftover fall decor so this is just one of those that's like wired so I'm curling it because I want that curly twig hanging look so you don't have to do this.
You could use any type of leaves or whatever you want to put on it. I could just tie some raffia or whatever, but I just wanted this to add something to this, so I'm just wrapping it again as well, I'm not going to permanently attach it and now I'm just going to glue it on a little bit. leaves and I know I said glue, but what I'm doing is gluing them around the stem there so it hasn't stuck to the vase yet, I'm just gluing the things that I'm putting around the top so it looks good for your file decoration, but again, it's not limited to just being a pumpkin and again, I just cut these leaves out of a fall decoration and then I don't display them, but I do put a I hung a tag around the top of this one as well and I decide to add a little of raffia because this is a pretty big pumpkin and I felt like it needed something hanging so I tied it up and stored it under the other one. decoration around the top and you would never know by looking at this that it is a vase, only when you look at it it really looks like a pumpkin and obviously you don't have to stick with this white, you can use oranges or any pumpkin. color you want, I really like my neutrals and I'm zooming in on that texture there and I think that little hang tag made a big difference and all I did was just stamp a sheet and then my last item.
I looked up this little bottle and it's shaped like a leaf and I tried to read what was on the bottom uh and all it said was something about patent pending and I thought maybe it was an Avon bottle, but I couldn't find the name on it. nowhere, but I'm cleaning this with alcohol so I can paint it and I'm also cleaning my hands with alcohol because a viewer said that your hair, hair oils on your skin can also retain paint. so it doesn't stick, so I thought I'd be careful, I just can't make gloves, so I had to wipe my hands with it and now I'm putting a layer of Kohler buttercream on this and a layer, a generous layer, I covers well. and I didn't use um I didn't use anything to help this bar because I want to really mess it up so once I apply this buttercream and let it dry well, it's ready for the next layer or the next one. step, so I let it dry and then I'm going to use a brown glaze on this and that brown glaze will not only give more depth to the color, but it will also remove some of this paint so it's omitted.
I have to use sandpaper or even do a wet wash because once I put this on and you'll see as I wipe it off, it starts to take off some of that paint enough that I actually have enough on the sides, but Now on the front I had to scrub a little more but it didn't take long and I was able to get the look I wanted now, as I mentioned before there are a few other items I'm going to do. I'll finish and do the editing and I hope to get it done in time to post it tomorrow night, but at the end you'll see my little vignette and there are some other elements that I haven't or won't be in this. video but they will be in the next one so when I post that video tomorrow and you see the same thumbnail it's not the same video it's a different one it's just the remaining elements that are in that thumbnail and then once I get this little bottle uh cleaned up so I'm going to embellish the top by adding some raffia and torn fabric and I'm just going to tie it around the top and add a hang tag and then it's done and I know I'm not really showing off these hang tags but I hope tomorrow I have a chance to do a close up and show off some different hang tags.
If I get a chance, I'll add them to the video tomorrow because I think they just add a For any holiday or any seasonal decorations, I'll go ahead and add the little vignette at the end of this video, although some of those elements I haven't done on video yet , but those will be the items I'll add tomorrow, so here's the bullet point I've been working on and, like I said, there are some items in there that I'll put in tomorrow, so, like I said, I may not have decided. I'm sure it could be the same miniature, but don't confuse it with this one again because I'll be finishing this one and there's one of the bottles that I'll be making tomorrow night and actually will be making. a couple and then I'm going to decorate a clipboard and you guys can do a lot of things with clipboards.
I hope you enjoyed this video and I hope to see you in the next one. Thank you very much for watching. Have a great night. God bless you and your family
