What are you going to do in 2023? Tops 5 skills to get!

May 01, 2024
- Make sure you spend time on things that give you many benefits. Don't spend time on things that give you little return. Acquiring a new skill can change your life completely. If you try to improve your life by 1% every day, the effect over many years is extreme, enormous. Every day, try to learn something new. That you are neither too young nor too old to do something. (soft, upbeat music) Before we begin, I want to emphasize that you must believe in yourself. You must believe that you can change your life in

2023

. You must believe that you have the ability and capacity to do so.

You have to ignore the haters. You should ignore people who have told you, at school or at other times in your life, that you can't do it. You need to put your mind in the right place and believe in yourself. And I'm telling you, you can. If I can do it, you can do it. I can't tell you how many people have told me in my life, or over the years of my life, that "David, you're an idiot." "David, you can't do it." "David, I'm putting you in this box. "This is the kind of person you are. "You can't be this person. "You can't be a YouTuber because you're too old. "You can't be an instructor" because you are not smart enough. "You don't speak with the right accent, "you don't have the right education," etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

you should acquire in 2023 if you haven't already. I've said this many, many times and I've done it many, many times in my life. most popular, get on those waves and ride them. So I want to talk about five areas that I really think you should look at if you haven't already in 2023, and then look at the

I love technology or technology in general. You don't need a fancy degree. You don't need to be part of an old boys' club, for example, to get somewhere in technology. If you try hard, in a few years you will be able to change your life because technology changes all the time. Look at me. I got my CCIE maybe 20 years ago. What was really important 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or five years ago, won't necessarily be important in 2023. The hot technologies of those days may have disappeared. Things are constantly evolving and changing, which can make it more difficult, if you've been in the tech sector for a long time, to stay up to date.

But the good news for someone like you who may be just starting out is that if you start today, within two years you could be an expert in a specific sphere or niche, if you want. Think blockchain. It didn't exist a few years ago. (screen clicks) Think about machine learning and AI. That is changing the world in recent years. 10 years ago, 20 years ago, that wasn't really important compared to how important it will be in the next few years. Jump over the waves, ride them and change your life. Now, I'm

going

to continue to talk a little bit about mindset and give you some tips from my experience, but if you don't want to hear that, that's okay.
Use the timestamps below to advance the video. It is important to remember that Rome was not built in a day. When you're starting out, it can be overwhelming because there's a lot of information, a lot to learn, but I'm telling you, you don't have to try to learn everything that way. First of all, that's impossible. And secondly, there is too much to learn very, very quickly. The more you learn, the easier you will find that it is easier to learn additional skills or acquire additional skills, learn new technologies, because many of them are interrelated. For example, I have a solid foundation in networking.
For me, moving to another area is not that difficult because I have a solid foundation in networks, programming, etc. It is much easier to acquire new technologies. But I want you to remember that life is a journey and your path can change over time. You may be doing this today, but tomorrow you will do something totally different and there is nothing stopping you from reinventing yourself. You could be the expert in this area and tomorrow or in a few years, you will be the expert in another area because technologies change and you have to change with the technologies.
If people tell you, "You should stay where you are," either they haven't been in tech long enough or they've stagnated because stagnation is a terrible thing. You have to keep reinventing yourself. You have to keep learning and changing

what

you are doing. If you had told me five years ago that I would have a million subscribers on YouTube (audience applause), I probably wouldn't have believed you. You have to keep improving

what

you are doing and keep learning. To help you with that, I want to talk about some principles. The first thing I really believe in is the circle of control.
You may not be able to control what governments do or what certain people do in the world. I don't watch a lot of news because it can be very depressing. You can't change what people on the other side of the world do. For example, I live in the UK. I can't change what the president of the United States is doing, so I don't focus on that. I focus on the things I can control. I can control my time. If you have a job and have to work a certain number of hours, your boss could control it.
But you may have some flexibility in deciding what you do with your time. And after work, what do you do with your time? What do you do with your time on weekends? - Work hard. (relaxing and happy music) There is no magic pill. It drives me crazy to go to the gym. You read one hour a day. I went and trained five hours a day and was working in construction 24 hours a day. Organize your day. Work hard. - For me, as an example, and I'm not telling you that this is what you have to do, I don't watch television because it can be a huge waste of time, as if it takes up an enormous amount of time.
I prefer to use my time for other things. You must decide what is important to you and prioritize what is important to you. But the point is that you can control your time. You can decide where you spend your time. So don't waste time on things that don't give you a return. Rather, spend time on things that will give you a long return. For example, I learned about networking many, many years ago and that has helped me for over 20 years as an example. What I learned 20 years ago still helps me today because it is a foundation that I build on.
Rather, spend your time learning something that can help you in the future. Another important principle is the 80-20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle, 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the causes. For example, in business, 20% of your customers give you 80% of your income. If you make sure to focus your time on the 20%, you will get a much better return than if you focus your time on less important things. For example, if you watch a TV show, just some kind of entertainment, that might relax you now, but what's the benefit of that? What's the long-term return on that versus, say, reading a book that changes the way you think or watching a video that teaches you something that could give you a return throughout your life?
You could learn something about investing. You could learn something about technology. And that could give you return after return after return after return for your entire life. Make sure you spend time on things that bring you a lot of benefits. Don't spend time on things that give you little return. Acquiring a new skill can change your life completely. For example, learning a programming language like Python can be used for years and years and years and years. Once you learn to code, you can use Python for a while or for many years, or you can move on to another programming language, but you've already overcome the hurdle of learning a programming language.
The return on that investment can be enormous. Learning Linux, for example, can provide you with great benefits throughout your life. Spend time on things that give you great performance. Don't spend time on things that give you little return. A book I often recommend is "Atomic Habits." James Clear in the book talks about the 1% principle, if you will, or the 1% rule, that if you simply try to improve your life by 1% each day, the effect over many years is extreme, enormous. Every day, spend a little time learning. Try to learn something new every day. And it's amazing how that exponentially increases your knowledge and opens up opportunities.
I have acquired many skills over the years. Some of them would be technical skills like networking and programming. Some of them would be business skills or just other types of skills, like how to use YouTube. So I have YouTube skills, I have social media skills. I keep learning, I keep trying to develop myself in multiple areas and that knowledge becomes exponential and can really change things. Another good book is "Deep Work." It is very difficult for some people, but it is often necessary to let go of distractions. Get rid of your phone, turn off your notifications, things like that.
Save it and make sure you spend time every day doing deep work. In other words, study hard. A term that could be used for me is creator. I am a content creator. I don't create the content by checking emails or looking at notifications on my phone. I often turn off all notifications, block myself from the rest of the world, and try to spend time creating content where I won't be distracted. I need to turn off notifications because can you imagine trying to create a YouTube video like this and then receiving constant messages? I need to disable notifications and messages so I can create content.
Now, you may not be a content creator, but how do you think you're going to study something difficult if you don't turn off notifications and spend time learning? You have to do deep work. Some books I recommend you read are "The 4-Hour Workweek." Some people don't like the title, but there are a lot of good principles in that book. Think of principles like the 80-20 principle, the circle of control. Think “1%”, “Deep Work”, fantastic books that you can read that can really change things in your life. However, in 2023 you should make the effort to do things differently than you did in the past.
As the saying goes, "It's crazy to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result." Make sure you do something different today, tomorrow, and this year if you're not getting the results you want. Now This year, I will do it slightly differently than previous years. I want to talk about five basic skills you should learn in 2023, if you don't already have them. And, as always, write the comments below. If you don't agree with what I'm saying, before I talk about the five main skills, I want to talk about five paths. There is a lot of overlap with the skills you would need for these different paths.
I think it's very trendy right now and something I would probably start considering if I was just starting my journey today is data science, machine learning or artificial intelligence. Recently ChatGPT has really exploded, there is a lot of interest in this AI. If you really want to ride the next wave, if you want to change your life, I would seriously consider data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. It doesn't matter what other field you are interested in. Maybe you are interested in cybersecurity. That's been a very popular niche in recent years. AI can put you in a different league than everyone else.
If you understand machine learning, if you understand data science, it can change your entire life. I highly suggest you focus on that in 2023. And what I plan to do this year is create a lot of videos on this topic. This will change many, many industries. It really has and will continue to do so more and more. ChatGPT software is just one example of what is possible. It's amazing what that AI can do. In my previous video I put it to the test in cybersecurity, in programming, in networks and it was surprising what it can do. Check out the video below if you're interested.
But AI is going to change things. Now, if that's not your interest, take a look at development or programming. There will always be a demand for developers in the world. Now, think about the devices that most people carry with them. It could be an iPhone, it could be an Android phone. These devices run on software. People don't necessarily use their phones to make phone calls, they use them for apps. So if you're interested in programming, I'd be very interested in app development, specifically on iOS, specifically on Android. Fantastic place to have a good race. But maybe you want to write apps for Windows or Mac or other platforms, but look at the development.
I have interviewed Dr. Chuck several times. Check out the videos below. He gives you a free path to become a developer. He'll teach you Python, he'll teach you C, he'll teach you SQL. He teaches you a lot of skills that you would need if you want to become a developer. Maybe you can't afford an expensive school, you don't want to studycomputer science, watch their free videos that will help you become a developer. Once again, it's been very, very hot lately.cyber security. There is a great need for security professionals. Many, many more jobs on the blue team than on the red team.
Companies need to be safe. There will always be a need for people interested in cybersecurity, so that's a great place to look. The cloud is huge. Amazon, we have Google, we have Microsoft. I would specifically look at Amazon if you're not sure which of the three to look at. But the cloud is big and continues to grow. More and more companies are moving their on-premises servers to the cloud, so take a look at the cloud. Another interesting topic to consider is blockchain. And I'm not talking about Bitcoin, I'm not talking about cryptocurrencies. Take a look at blockchain for smart contracts.
Now, you don't need to focus on just one of them. You might, for example, be interested in cybersecurity. So maybe you're thinking about hacking the blockchain or helping companies secure it. Very good areas, but I wanted to give you some extra areas. Take a look at the APIs. They have become very hot lately. Some people will say, "Well, APIs are part of programming, "so if you're a programmer, you have to learn about APIs." But I wanted to put this as an added benefit because APIs are also very important with respect to cybersecurity. If you want to become an ethical hacker, hacking APIs is a great place to start.
APIs are also used a lot in networks today, so APIs are really important. And let me talk about networks. but I don't think networking will be a high growth industry in the next few years. Oh, it's become very mature. It's a great stable place to get a job, but it's not a big growth one, so if you want to get on. to the next wave. or in the future, get into the trendy things, then networking is essential, it is very important, used by many of these other trends, but it is not the best place to get a job If you want. bet on a fashion trend, do it.
Take a look at data science, machine learning or artificial intelligence. Take a look at some of the other types of networks. I would say it is a stable industry but not high growth. Another advantage is IoT, Internet of Things. I mean, will you become a developer who writes code for IoT? Maybe you get into cybersecurity and hack IoT devices. These devices are proliferating everywhere. We have smart homes. The lights I'm using here are so-called smart lights. Smart devices are taking over the world. More and more devices, washing machines, toasters, etc., etc., are becoming smart. If you like hacking, again, it's a fantastic area to look at, or maybe code.
So there are five paths that I suggest you consider. Now, let's talk about the five basic skills you need to acquire. Let's say you are interested in machine learning or cybersecurity, in any of these spheres, one of the fundamental skills you need is Linux. Now, I've been saying this for years. Learn Linux. Learn Linux. Learn Linux. And I'll still be saying it in 2023. Learn Linux if you haven't learned it already. The world runs on Linux. If you're into hacking or cybersecurity, think Kali Linux, think Parrot OS. Just think about the tools you need. They run on Linux.
If you like machine learning, AI, Linux, once again. If you're into networking, network devices often run or have a base on Linux. The cloud runs on Linux. I mean, I can repeat myself over and over again. You need to learn Linux. This is a paradigm shift for many people. Don't be a consumer, be a creator. When you learn to code, everything changes because you can create your own tools. You are not limited by the available tools that others have created. Probably the best programming language to start with is Python. If you don't have coding experience, look into Python.
But very soon after, look at Golang, look at Rust. Rust is the language I suggest you consider if you really want to become a developer or coder. If you're in cybersecurity, if you're into machine learning, Python is a great place to start. Great place to, you know, learn. It will really help you in your career. But also take a look at Golang, take a look at Rust soon after you've learned Python. Now, another critical skill is networking. Basically, the world runs on a network, the Internet. Internet of things means networking. Cybersecurity means that you have to understand networks.
You don't need to become a CCIE like me. You don't even have to become a CCNP if you're not interested in networking per se. Maybe you're interested in something else, but you need to appreciate networking. You need to understand an IP address. You need to understand port numbers. Having an understanding of networking as a fundamental skill. It is important in cybersecurity to understand what a port number is, for example, or what an IP address is. Fundamental cloud skill, once again, is one of the hottest areas of training in recent years and is becoming increasingly mature. You need to learn about the cloud.
In the past we installed applications on physical hardware, now we place them on virtual machines. And that brings me to the next topic, virtualization. And that has changed now with Docker containers, so containers have become very popular. So take a look at virtualization. Make sure you appreciate or understand virtualization. If you work in cybersecurity, you'll want to run Kali Linux, for example, in a virtual machine. You need to understand what a virtual machine is. But you may want to go a step further and put it in a container that is much lighter. Be sure to learn about virtual machines, Docker, and Kubernetes.
Great foundational skills to learn in 2023 if you haven't learned them already. There are a lot of repetitions of previous years here, but this is fundamental, it is important. Right up there, Linux. Make sure you learn Linux. Make sure you learn a programming language, even if it's just Python. Make sure you understand the basics of networking. Make sure you understand the cloud. Make sure you understand virtualization. As a suggestion, obtain CompTIA certifications in these areas. For example, get Linux Plus from CompTIA. Get Network Plus for networking. Get Cloud Plus for the cloud, etc. There are plenty of introductory certifications you can earn.
For networking, if you want to focus on becoming a network engineer, CCNA is still my recommendation. But if you want to get into cybersecurity, you may not be as focused on networking, so Network Plus is fine for that. Moral of the story is: read books, go on YouTube. There are tons of places where you can get free content to learn these skills. You don't have to pay a lot of money to learn these things. Okay, but what are you going to do in 2023? Are you going to make an effort? Are you going to spend time learning these things and changing your life in technology?
The responsibility is yours. You need to decide what you are going to do. I'm going to continue learning. I'm not going to stop learning. You can't stop learning if you want to be in technology. You have to keep learning. And for me personally, the areas that I'm really going to focus on in 2023 are artificial intelligence and development. I want to go back to the old days when I was involved in development. I also want to expand the cybersecurity content, but specifically AI. (soft and happy music) I want to put AI in different spheres. AI in cybersecurity, AI in programming, AI in many places.
Big focus for me this year. As always, I want to wish you all the best in 2023. Go out and make your life a success. (soft, happy music continues)
