Mar 22, 2024
Hello everyone, I am Dr. Amir Karam, board certified facial

plastic

surgeon

. I specialize in facial rejuvenation, which basically means that I help people look as young as they feel and today we're going to talk about a very interesting and really very important topic, and that is. Healing After a Facelift I recently received an article highlighting Sharon Osborne's

facelift

experience. Her surgery was done in October and her immediate response to the surgery says I got a full face done in October and I look like one of those damn mummies. They wrapped him in bandages later she was worried about the fact that his eyes didn't look the same you've got to be kidding me she told the

surgeon

he looked like a fucking cyclops all I need is a hunchback

sharon

osborne she's 69 I mean At the time the story was written it was also noted that most of the quotes she was expressing were during the healing process, the first week or two after the healing process and the article goes on to say that she felt better with the changes as things calmed down, etc., so that's good news.

Now let's break things down a bit here, so there is definitely a difference between a good outcome and a bad outcome, so let's not underestimate the importance of alignment. for success and what that basically means, I mean you want to be in the hands of a very experienced

facelift

surgeon and we've had videos where I talk to you about how to choose a good surgeon, what to look for in a good surgeon face, so there's that aspect and we're also going to talk about what the normal healing is and what to expect. Now let's talk about the bad results. 100.

More Interesting Facts About,

There are bad results in

plastic

surgery just like there are bad results in any other type of surgical field. Even in dentistry there are bad results, the bottom line is that no two surgeons are the same, no two techniques are the same and there are times when the results are not correct and sometimes that is related to the surgeon, sometimes that is actually related just with the healing process, but at the end of the day there are bad results, when those bad results happen, it is considered the need for revision, you know, touch-ups, etc., etc., and we are not going to go into that aspect, although That would be a good topic for a future video, but let's talk about normal healing assuming the person will have a good outcome.

What it seems to me in Sharon Osborne's experience was that she was not adequately prepared, perhaps for the immediate post-operative period. that she is going to have now, I do my best to prepare everyone and my patience for what it will look like. We have published many travel videos. We take people through every step of the way. You can watch them on my channel if you haven't already so you can see intimately what you know one day two days three days four days five days up to a couple of months even a couple of years after a facelift or in our practice we do restoration vertical it seems and that is very, very important to mentally prepare and be ready for what is to come, because if you are not ready for what is to come, what you see immediately after surgery can be extremely discouraging, scary and overwhelming, and that being said, as much as we try, our practice because we know how people feel, we get tons of patients, at least probably 60 to 70 percent of our patients in the first three or four days, something crazy, a little worried, if this is going to continue like this, is it that normal?

Be one of the bad guys. Am I going to be the exception? So there's a big emotional roller coaster during the immediate post-op because at the end of the day it's your face and we can understand that and we can certainly empathize. and understanding what

sharon

was going through because even as I said in the most deliberate way, you can prepare someone sometimes it's overwhelming so take these next words and these next messages to heart because if you're going to have surgery, this will help To be in the back of your mind, I think there's a certain assumption that having facial work or plastic surgery work, you know, is a lighter realm than other types of surgery, meaning when someone You have an ACL repair or back surgery, they know they're going to be out for a while, they know they're going to undergo physical therapy and rehab and all that other stuff before they can function again, but for some reason people underestimate the healing process of facial surgery. and specifically facelifts, so it's not like going through a time warp or a fountain of youth, kind of like something where you just come out the other side looking amazing, you have to go through a process because surgery is, by definition , traumatic for the tissues.
This means that we have altered things and as a result the body needs time to heal, so this is what happens. Surgery is usually performed in the first three or four days after surgery. There is a phenomenon called third space. The third space is basically where the capillaries and blood meet. the vessels and tissues leak and let fluid build up in the tissues so the face swells the more it swells the weirder it looks especially in the cheekbone areas where most people have cheekbones relatively high and any swelling over this area makes the face look very wide and that is normal, it is completely normal because your body is shedding fluid, which causes some people to bruise, bruises always accentuate the appearance of having things If they have done things to your eyes, everything is your eyes will look smaller everything will look congested things will look drawn they will look strange now that gets worse during the first three or four days so you wake up after surgery you look at yourself yourself and you're like, hey, okay, this isn't that bad and then they get worse for the first few days, so that's something to keep in mind now, when does that all start to change?
Normally around the fifth or sixth day there's a turn and again we're talking from our practical experience so you know you may need to extrapolate based on how other people do things but usually around the fifth or sixth day we talk about it almost as if it were the first day of truly healing the swelling. It's starting to absorb the tissues are starting to absorb some of that swelling and then you wake up day after day looking better and better now, by two weeks, typically in our practice, patients have turned the corner, they're They look reasonably good.
They don't look perfect by any means, but overall they look good enough to go to a grocery store and not scare small children and one of our patients raised in this trimester said the restaurant was ready after two weeks and that's where I would say maybe 80 90 of our patients fit in, so for people who want to get back to work, etc., it's usually a good amount of time to take a break and get back to work so you don't lose too much time away from productivity and work, etc., but when do you really look good? Honestly, that healing process continues to get better and better up to a year after surgery, in many cases, sometimes even longer, now it doesn't mean you look like you're recovering many times over.
I mean, after a month or two, you look at the person you are and wonder how she could improve, but then you look at her six months later and she actually looks better in a soft, subtle way, not in a major way, it's just getting better. Recovering in general, there are some basics. things that we know are going to take a long time, for example, numbness of the tissues, which requires a recovery process of three or four months, sometimes six months, a tightening of the tissues that requires a little time to recover. What happens to the incisions now?
That's another story, no one comes out of surgery looking perfect from an incision standpoint. The incisions have two phases, they have the inflammatory phase of healing, in which a large amount of blood supply, a large amount of collagen enters the tissues and healing begins. The process basically repairs that fence that was caused by the scalpel cut into the skin and then there is the reorganization phase of wound healing that lasts up to a year and a half or so after surgery, so you can count on it Your incisions look red and look different. A little angry A little bright for at least two to three months after surgery and then slowly improves over time.
What are people doing in the meantime? Well, they use some tinted sunscreen. A little mineral makeup on the incisions. just to get rid of some of that redness and give the tissues time to heal, so you have to be prepared for all of this when it comes to the eyes, generally speaking, at least in our practice, we don't do anything that would alter the shape. of the eye on purpose we don't do anything to do that now there are some techniques like cantopexies and things like that that can really change the shape of the eye I personally don't do them, I don't find them very necessary but the bottom line is that it doesn't matter what you do, if you have surgery around your eyes or on your eyelids etc, your eyes will temporarily change shape until things are fixed now of course, again, back to the technique, everyone has a slightly different shape. approach in our practice I always say that the eyes are never going to change shape and you can see that in our before and after they always look the same, but minus the agent changes, so those are some of the things to keep in mind, I think .
The most important takeaway here is that you should trust your surgeon if you chose wisely, if you have taken the time to do your research and you are comfortable with the surgeon, trust him, trust him, trust the healing process. They introduce you to you, trust the feedback they give you about your healing process, and ultimately, if you take a very relaxed and emotionally free role during the healing process, I promise you that you will heal twice as fast as if you were very emotionally gentle. . of worried, constrained and anxious about the healing process, those patients in our practice that we can count on are going to take longer than those who are just oh, everything is fine, I trust you, doctor Karen, we are going to be fine. this is like a phase etc those patients heal like a charm and we never have to deal with some of the lengthy healing measures that go along with the healing process so keep all that in mind it sounds like Sharon Osborne is starting to change.
In the corner, at least things at the time this article was published, she is starting to feel better as things calm down, which is great news. I don't know anything specifically about her outcome or the surgeon she chose, etc., but just to say that giving her and her experience the benefit of the doubt she will most likely be fine, I hope she is fine guys, thank you very much for your attention , this is really very good important information for any of you who are considering having facial surgery, take this message seriously save this share this with friends and family who are also interested in this process because this information can really help make the whole process much easier emotionally and mentally.
